MacBook Pro :: Transition From 10.6.8 To 10.9 From External Backup
Aug 28, 2014
My Macbook running 10.6.8 recently died.My backup is on Time Machine and is on an external drive. I do plan on getting a new Mabook Pro with core i5 running 10.9. How do I transition my information from my back up to the new laptop smoothly. I realize I will lose some of my programs that were not 64 bit.

I'm new to these forums because I am considering making the switch from HP to Mac. I am sick and tired of having to buy a new computer every 2 years (if I"m lucky) because mine gets a virus or whatever (and I have a virus scan thing). My desktop computer loses the internet ALL THE TIME, but I admit that if I used my laptop, which is at school, then I probably wouldn't lose the signal. what do you like most about your MacBook? Has anyone else made the transition from Windows to Mac. I use Mac sometimes at school, and I find it kind of confusing, haha. I figure it probably just takes some getting used to.

I have a external HD which has always worked fine under snow leopard. Since upgrading to lion I keep getting the following message The identity of the backup disk has changed since the previous backup. The disk may have been replaced or erased, or someone may be trying to trick your computer into backing up to the wrong disk. And after this the drive disappears from the desktop appearing agian only after restart. What can I do do rectify this? Delete and re-intialise the drive?

I've become really accustomed to the glass trackpad. I went into my local store to try out the Air again, and realised just how much I prefer the glass trackpad and buttonless design. Has anyone else done a similar transition?

Quick question: I'm upgrading from a late 2007 C2D MB (OSX 10.5.8) to the current 17" MBP, and I keep regular back ups on Time Machine. Besides the programs that won't working jumping into 10.6, are there any other issues i might face? And how exactly do I go about restoring from time machine to make a seamless transition to my new machine?

I'm using Yosemite, yet many of my application like Pixelmator, Autodesk inventor, says " this application requires OS X version 10.6.7 or higher". Also when I go on Youtube or other sites, only black box appears, no video loads. While playing a video on my hard disk, I can hear only audio but no video is displayed. Transition effects are slow and can not hear or see and preview of audio or or video files. I tried AHT hardware check but it says no errors found.

I'm going to install Snow Leopard "currently running Leopard 10.5.8" and I was hoping to put it on my 1.5 TB external HD, that way I don't need to burn it to a CD since that seems like a bit more work since I already have a external HD lying around. So that part seems straight forward enough to me, but then I have the problem of where/how do I backup my mac, I was going to back it up to my external "using Carbon Copy Cloner" but I only have one. So would it be safe to backup my mac to this external and also put the new snow leopard OSX. I mean is there any reason this wouldn't be possible or am I putting all my computers information at risk by doing this? Also I already formatted this External Hardrive to Mac OS X extended journaled.

I am thinking about buying a HD for a full system backup and all files. I am worried about getting such a big HD and having it fail, thus loosing years of data. Is there any redundancy in a 1TB drive does partitioning help? What if the entire drive fails or are there multiple drives in those external hd? I need a reliable backup system for music, photos of child, that will last years. I want to be able to use the HD with both formats, pc and mac...what should I format with or is that a good idea?

Is it possible? I am seeking a solution for my household computing needs. We have a laptop (Mac) and a desktop (Dell). I would like to have one external drive to backup both the laptop and PC and also for storage for both. Is this possible? Would it be a four way partition? The only thing I would ever see a need to cross between partitions would be music from our individual itunes libraries.

I have multiple computers that all need to be backed up! The macbook that I bought for my girlfriend last year suffered a major hit, the hard drive crashed and she lost all of her information. Now I am worried!! I have the computers listed in my signature and a Lenovo s10e netbook that I would like to back up on the same external hard drive. I don't plan on doing anything but backing them up once every week or two.
First question is what external hard drive should I get to be able to back-up four macs and a windows machine? (I would like to have a desktop external, not portable)
Second question is when I get the drive should I separate the drive into multiple section or what?

I purchased a LaCie Little Disk to use a storage device for my photos. It comes with a usb hookup. When I plug the LaCie into the MBA nothing happens. There is a short cut button on top of the LaCie and I pressed it too. Again nothing showing up on the MBA (2nd Gen).

I have a MacBook that I'm trying to backup because my husband wants to sell my computer and buy an iPad. I have a WD external hard drive with an iPhoto library currently on it, chronicling the first 28 months of my first child's life; needless to say it's important! The problem is that Time Machine won't back up to the external drive without erasing everything on it! Is there any way around this?
I will probably also need tips on how to put the iPhoto library (28 months to present time, about 2,200 pictures!) on my MacBook onto the hard drive (does that automatically happen upon backup?). Obviously I've done it once, because there is a library currently on the hard drive, but I can't remember how I did it.

I just bought a MBP 2010 with the i7, and I'm trying to figure out what to do for external storage and backup since this is my first Mac ever. I have an Icy Dock with a 1TB harddrive in it, but it only has eSATA and USB ports. USB would not be preferable for trying to back up stuff. I was reading these forums about eSATA ExpressCards, but they seem really suspect (kernel panics sound terrifying) and a lot of work to get going. I was thinking about just getting another enclosure with FireWire 800, but can't seem to find any advice on good ones. I was wondering if I should just get a new external harddrive. I would like to get out of this without having to buy too much new stuff. Can somebody give a recommendation regarding whether I should get an expresscard, new enclosure, or new external?

I am currently making the switch from Windows, I can't wait for my MacBook to arrive. My lovely Dell currently has a 320 GB HD that would prove a very nice external backup storage unit. I plan to remove it and find a case to mount and use it as such!
Only problem is, I'm fairly certain that I'll run into some compatibility issues and have never used an external HD. I'm unsure of how the process works. This is the HD in my personal laptop (only PC I own), so it's not like I have it hooked up to play around with as an external at the moment.Â
The Hard Drive is a Toshiba MK3255GSX (SATA): [URL]  Can I connect with FireWire (or Is that dependent on my hard drive, or do I get a cable converter)?When/how do I partition it?Since this is my personal home use PC, it's loaded with a bunch of programs/Win32/cache/temp files/garbage. Can I just access/delete these from the Mac?Â

When Steve Jobs does his presentation he frequently uses a transition whereas a big announcement is being made, say, a price drop or a launch date the announcement is made with a transition that drops down and lands with a 'thud' and there is then smoke rising from the word that dropped down.
Can anyone tell me what transition this is and where I could get it to implement into my presentation?

Can I store some pictures on my External HD that I use for Time machine Backups? It is not partitioned and at the moment all I have on that HD is my backups. I know they would already be on the HD if they are on my computer, I just don't know how I go about pulling one folder of pics off the time machine.

I have a MacBook and will be purchasing an external harddrive to backup all my info from OS X. I also have a partition on the drive in the MacBook for windows and would like to use the external as a backup for that as well. Do I have to format the external and partition to backup each OS? I am new to the whole backup of info with an external harddrive.

Decided to encrypt my external backup drive. Instead, I essentially doubled my memory by duplicating my external hard drive and adding it to my MacBook. Now my startup disk is full and I'm stuck. I also have Time Machine but not sure how to restore (replace?) my Mac storage to what it was two hours ago.

Is iPhoto graphic card intensive? On my Early 2008 MP every time I go to full screen mode (already evident in '09) the graphics card fan spins up and there is a discernible pause in transitioning. I think with Lion's big emphasis on full screen functionality, I will be annoyed to death with the pause and annoying fan's whirl.
Is the 2600xt really that outdated? I don't want to get a card for gaming purposes but something that will remedy this. During the presentation you see how fast the applications respond and they're using a iMac. I thought with 8cores I would be at least on par but it could be the graphics card as well. Such a downer.

I've created an iMovie that's full of transitions, effects, and titles. Now I have a problem that I found a typo in one of the titles, and I want to go back and change it. One problem, it's in a clip that has a transition, and trying to delete the transition crashed iMovie. (A nice generic 'The application iMovieHD quit unexpectedly.') This is with iMovie 5.0.2 on OS X 10.4.3, on two separate computers. (The two in my .sig)
Short description: So, to start from the beginning, I have a 'source' clip. I then added a title to this clip (Music Video style.) Then I used the 'slow' function to slow the clip to 1/3 normal speed. Finally, I transitioned from this clip to the next clip with a 1 second-long dissolve. (The next clip has the same type of title and slow done to it, only with different text.)
Excrutiatingly long description: This clip has no transition leading in (although there is a clip before it,) and the clip following has no transition leading out. (So these two clips could be considered to be a single group that could theoretically be taken separately from the rest of the movie.) Trying to remove a similar transition from similar clips in the movie also fails. (The movie consists of 20 clips from DV, each of the 20 with the same type of title, each with the same 1/3 slowdown, paired up with a dissolve transition between the pairs. The clips are in groups of four, with a black intro text at the beginning of each group, a fade from black into the first clip, followed by two transitioned clips, two more transitioned clips, a third set of transitioned clips, and a clip that fades to black, then a 'postscript' text. Then the cycle starts again, five groups like this in a row.

I've recently started to use iMovies 09 and have found it quite easy. Although on my latest project one transition I'm using (mosaic) doesn't accept the change to the duration. I can change the duration in the inspection box, but then it doesn't accept that change in the actual transition down in project area.
It says 6.0s in the inspection box, but 1.0s on the actual transition.
