MacBook Pro :: Trackpad Not Working - Moving Around Erratically
Apr 20, 2012
I have a 4 month brand-new macbook pro which is not heavily used at all, one day my trackpad is working fine, today it is moving around extremely erratically, switching from screen to screen, going to mission control with only one finger swipe etc. I cannot use it at all, I have to use a plug-in mouse. I have checked all my rpeferences for trackpad and nothing has changed. How do I fix this?

Just recently my cursor started moving erratically and it's difficult to click where intended. The screen gets big and small without my touching the trackpad. What's wrong - is it a virus or a malfunction in the trackpad? I have an OS X 10.9.5

When my macbook is awoken from standby the trackpad moves the cursor around as normal but will not respond to a tap or a click. A restart won't get it working again, but a little later it will start working once more. At the moment I can't identify what gets it going, possibly by clicking using the magic mouse but can't be certain of that.

I've turned off all tap to select options but my trackpad still selects and drags when I wiggle my thumb on the bottom of the trackpad, where you generally click. I have a 2010 MacBook Air. Is my trackpad broken, or is there a way to turn this off?

I just got a MacBook Pro, and the button being part of the trackpads touch area is cusing me problems. Freuently when I go to click the button it moves the cursor slightly causing the click to be in the wrong place.
Is there a way to turn off the lower area of the trackpad or something? Can I replace it with a trackpad with a seperate button?

I have an iMac that I have a second display hooked up to it. I can move an app (say Safari for example) from one display to another with my Magic Mouse. However, I also have a Magic Trackpad that I would like to do the same thing with, but I cannot figure out for the life of me how to do it. I'd really rather use the trackpad than the mouse because it's more comfortable to me.

I don't remember when this started, but i can't enlarge anymore. I've checked my trackpad's preference and it is ticked. I tried unticking it and ticking it again but the results are still the same. It won't work. The scrolling and dragging are working fine.

The strangest thing just happened to me on my MBP (10.6.3). I was messing around with the desktop, and I moved the dock to the left side of the screen, and I selected to have it hidden. From there, I went about what I was doing, and when I went back to my document (a Bean document) the keyboard was not responsive at all. I logged out, logged in, and things were fine. I activated the dock again, and then the keyboard went out again.
I logged out, logged in, moved the dock to its original position, and now things are fine. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem? I tried searching (not too thoroughly; this is kind of an urgent thing, and I didn't want the keyboard to go out on me again...), but I didn't see anything.

Just got the new 2.0 macbook and installed windows xp in boot camp, I configured the multi touch trackpad to do a secondary click with both two finger tap and lower right corner click. Everything works fine in leopard, but in windows the right click is not working, but it does work if I use a usb mouse.
Anyone have this problem or know a solution to fix this?

I've installed XP sp3 on my macbook, works great....except the trackpad. Most common problem with the trackpad (in other threads) is slugish response or whatever, but not here: the device just does not work at all.
These are the symptoms:
- no life in the touchpad device
- device manager shows an exclamation mark on the touchpad and says it wants me to update the driver (after enabling). This does not help a bit,I tried all the decision paths after right clicking it, include downloading some driver from the internet and pointing the operating system to this driver: no avail.
- accessories->system tools->system information: signed drivers does not even report something looking like a track or touchpad.
- updating to bootcamp 2.2 didn't bring anything.
- often threads (mostly about the trackpad being sluggish) endup pointing to the 1.1 update [URL], but something not available cannot be updated...so doesn't work
-under the apple operating system it works great.
Probably nothing to do with this, but my motherboard was replaced a few months ago (under warrenty), can they have forgot to hook something up there? I never tried XP before that repair on this machine.

I was wondering if anyone with a i7 macbook pro could test to see if the very bottom of your trackpad responds to anything. Right now I can't get it to register a single thing if my finger is at the very bottom and sliding horizontally along. The strange thing is it works just fine in all other parts. I noticed it because as I use the pad I would get up to that point and think hey why is my cursor not moving anymore. Can anyone confirm this is how it is supposed to be or is my trackpad a lemon.

I have a macbook air which trackpad and keyboard doesn't work.
I have searched the forums and tried the most. Here is a list SMC-ResetPRAM-resetCompletely Clean install of 10.9.3 (ongoing)Repaired permissionsChecked if trackpad settings were wrongClose-Open lid to see if that did the trick I have maybe forgotten something, but as you can see I have tried a lot.It all began after the computer being on for over 1 day. When in the login area the OS tells me that no keyboard was found after like 2-3 minutes. Other external devices works just fine. The funny thing is however, the keyboard works when starting up. It's possible to do commands, and if I hold option down to select a start disk the keyboard works here (I can use the arrows to select a startdisc), and when the computer is asleep I can wake it up by pressing the trackpad. So..

Basically I was using my Mac and it froze so I closed the lid. When I opened it again the fan was much louder than normal. It was still frozen and wouldn't respond so I switched it off from the power button. Then I turned it back on, but it wouldn't boot past the grey screen and the fan was still loud. I read some threads here and it said to boot it in safe mode using Shift, I did that and now I'm at the log in screen. However now the keyboard and trackpad aren't responding and the fan is still loud. If I get an external usb mouse and keyboard, any advice on what to do from there?

Well just installed XP on my boot camp partition. Here is my issue:1. The trackpad doesn't seem to be working properly. It's showing under device manager fine but the 2 finger right-click option isn't working. 2. Is the keyboard supposed to be backlit in XP?3. The sound buttons on the keyboard are not working (f11-f12)

I have a 2 Gen MBA and today suddenly the keyboard, trackpad and even the USB port stopped working, I tried connect an external mouse but it didn't work, even other USB devices are not working !! I tried the display port it is fine, but I am not sure about the audio port. I tried the SMC reset but it did me no good.
I had bought the MBA from Apple UK but currently I am in INDIA for my winter break from UNI. I don't have my OSX discs at the moment they are back in UK, I tried calling the Applecare but they are closed being a Sunday, and I don't want the local Apple Authorised Service center to touch my air as I don't trust them (The appointment of these repair centers in INDIA is not upto the highest standards !)
The keyboard and the trackpad are working in the Apple hardware test, I was able to move around the cursor and even use the keyboard to select the various options, so I believe the hardware is fine.
So any suggestions what can I do in the meantime, I will call Apple Care in UK tomorrow. I am not back in the UK till the 26th January.

I was just using my Macbook normally and it came up with an error like IP was in use or something with the red exclamation mark. The my internet stopped working so I just restarted it. Now my Macbook is literally not working? I can turn it on but when I get to the login screen, my mouse or keyboard are not working! So all I can do is hold the power button to turn off. It appears OSX is still running fine though because the screen dims after a while and the flashing | in the name input bar is still flashing.

Just bought my MBA about a month ago. Recently it started doing something weird, mostly on the dock icons.
Sometimes when I go to click on an icon, it doesn't do anything, regardless of whether I am clicking, double clicking, or pushing the button below the trackpad. I end up having to move the cursor off of the icon and back on once or twice before it will let me click.

For some reason i purchased this three weeks ago. Everything was working fine. However today i guess i closed the lid and then when i opened it, the computer didn't wake up. So i just held the power button and restarted. It booted into Leopard fine but now the trackpad and keyboard don't work....
The trackpad and keyboard seem to be fine when i hold the option key too choose what volume to boot from. It seems for some reason the keyboard and trackpad lose its function once it boots into leopard.
I looked up forums and tried numerous things like VRAM wipes, SMC reset, tried external keyboard and mouse and they only work up until it actually boots into the leopard OS. Tried going through a hub and same problem.

I am brand new to this site. When i swipe four fingers down on the trackpad to show everything I have open it doesn't work. When I try to swipe four fingers up to get to my desktop it doesn't work. When I try to go back a page in safari by swiping three fingers to the left it wont go back. But when I use two fingers to scroll up and down pages that works just fine. I haven't taken it to an apple store due to I am stuck at college and there isn't one around.
