Feb 5, 2012I have been using Lion for many months with few issues. But the Address Book application on my iMac started acting up two days ago and now will not open at all. BTW, I use iCloud extensively to sync the iMac, an iBook, an iPad and and iPhone. The Address Book app still works fine on the other three, just not the iMac.

ICloud :: Not Updating Address Book On MacBook Pro
May 7, 2012I use iCloud for my iphone 4, ipad 2, and MacBook Pro, all synced wirelessly via iTunes. However I can't get Address Book on the MacBook to update via iCloud. I've tried everything I can think of including deleting all entries and starting again, deleting the icloud account in preferences, ticking and unticking the enable box beside it, ticking and unticking the icloud box for contacts in system preferences (removing all entries at the same time).
I've selected the icloud account as the address book but it's still not seeing the contacts entries that I can see with my own eyes on the icloud website. It's never worked but I've turned a blind eye to it, since having got over the multiple entries and lost diaries fiasco when I first started to use it I've chosen to ignore the next problem.

Applications :: Search No Longer Works On Mail App On 10.4.11
Feb 10, 2009I have found that the search function in mail.app no longer works. I can type an email address or name etc that I know for a fact is there but search fails to bring back any results.
The company I work for has a system where whenever an email comes in it is read and then placed in a folder in mail called 'Completed' so we know the email has been seen by someone and acted upon.
I noticed that occasionally the search function would not work and then I found it was getting worse now it simply no longer works. I think the best it manages is 2 characters in the search field then as soon as you type a 3rd it says no results found.
Is there a way to rebuild the database or something? Is this a common fault?
Without the search function I now have to manually search nearly 6000 messages.
Safari :: Google Search No Longer Works?
May 2, 2012I have used Google for years and Safari. I use Google search as my home page. (the same issue occurs if I go to google)
When I enter a search item in the search bar; the search bar shifts to the upper left corner of the screen. Then, my items appears. However, no search occurs. When I hit search, nothing happens. Â
I switch to Firefox and my Google is working fine. I downloaded the most recent Safari. No change.

Jun 25, 2012Frequently when I work and update a lots of addresses in my address book the application hangs and I have to delete everything under /user/user/Library/ApplicationSupport/AddressBook and synchronize it again with ICloud to get it working again.

MacBook :: Password No Longer Works After Migration
Mar 25, 2012During the week my macbook hard drive bit the dust. I had a new hard drive installed today and I migrated my old data over to the new drive from backup when I got it home. So far so good - except when I try to log-in to my migrated user, the password simply doesn't work. I've tried lots of alternatives, even though I'm 100% sure I know what the password is. It's simply inconceivable that it can be anything other than what I think it is!Â
I tried resetting the password of the user account in question through another administrator user account, but even the new password doesn't work when I log out and try to log-in to my old user again. I've tried going in through the master password (honestly, I have no recollection of even setting a master password) but nothing that I type in works for that either. I only have a very limited pool of passwords and I've tried them all.
I was running Lion on the account I'm trying to re-access from my old hard drive, but the new drive is running Snow Leopard. Could it be something to do with this? Failing that, is there any other way to reset the password?

MacBook Air :: External Monitor No Longer Works
Aug 24, 2014I have used an external 23" monitor with my macbook air for almost 2 years, i have had a few issues, mainly just temporary blackouts lasting for just a second or two, but also seen red screen (all colors become red), this was however just a rare issue and usually it was working just fine.i borrowed a friends macbook and connected with the same cable to the same screen, and it worked immediately with no issues.Â
the screen would go completely black or start flickering (haven't seen this flicker before), and i had to fiddle around with reconnecting to get it working. the next day when i turned it on i had no picture, i tried again and still nothing, so i decided to install the updates, including thunderport firmware update. Now i got the old glitches and lots of new ones, at the times when i assume it would have worked before i am just getting static (black and white dots randomly everwhere) i can also get red'ish screen with instense flickering, but mostly just completely black. I thought the problem could be my cable or the monitor itself, but that's not the issue since those worked immediately without any problem on my friends computer, so it must be the macbook air itself!

Sep 3, 2009Did a fresh install of Snow Leopard on my Core Duo MBP, and installed ShhMBP to get rid of the whine. When I restarted, I received an alert stating:
Insecure Startup Item disabled.
"/Library/StartupItems/ShhMBP" has bot been started because it does not have the proper security settings.
Any other MBP users have this problem? How can I apply the appropriate security settings?

Nov 21, 2010Using a G4 IBOOK with OS 10.5.8. Recently converted IBOOK from just my wifes computer to both of us so it is now dual usuage with both of us signing in to our respective files/e-mail, etc. My side has a problem never experienced before. My apple mail system address book has all the names the dock address book does but is missing almost 2/3rd of the actual e-mail addressess. I have tried to redo the dock address book in hopes it would change the "internal" mail book, but to no avail. It id difficult to add a recipient to an outgoing e-mail via the dock address instead of the apple mail address book.

Try as I might, doing various combinations of name or group selections in the address book window, I cannot seem to get the "Edit Distributuion List" item to be un-greyed. Effectively, the program is not allowing me to do the edit function I need to do on this one group member.Â
Am I missing the secret handshake in this process? Why should it be this hard to do this simple function?Â
Which raises the larger question of "What did Apple do to the Address Book application in general?" This issue is only the tip of my iceberg. The whole app seems to be harder to use than before.Â

MacBook :: Cleaning Motherboard In BlackBook / No Longer Works Properly?
Jul 27, 2010So a co-worker has a black MacBook that his family managed to spill some liquid on. It no longer works properly, of course. He just wants to get a new computer, so he's giving it to me. I'll get all of his data off the HDD for him and then I can keep the MacBook. It's definitely a big step up from my PowerBook in terms of speed and performance (I'll miss the dedicated card and FW800, though).
I figure it can't hurt to try to clean the motherboard/logic board in the computer to see if I can get it running. Worse comes to worst, I can buy a new logic board for the computer and put it in and be set. Some questions:- What's the best way to clean a motherboard? I've seen everything from isopropyl alcohol to distilled water to just a gentle detergent and warm tap water.
- What's a good way to tell what model the computer is from the serial number? I will get the actual computer tomorrow, but my co-worker can't remember which model it is.From my research it could be anywhere between the 2 GHz and the 2.4 GHz, though he bought it refurbished from Apple last year so I'm guessing it's the 2.4 GHz model.- If the logic board is shot, and it's not the 2.4 GHz model, does anyone know if the 2.4 GHz board can be put in a non-2.4 GHz machine?
It's not every day one comes across a free Mac, so it's definitely something to put some effort into. Once I max out the RAM and put a new drive in (maybe even an SSD in an optibay) the computer should be quite capable.
MacBook :: External Display Via Mini DisplayPort To DVI No Longer Works
Mar 12, 2012I had not used my external monitor in the last several weeks. I believe there have been a few OSX Lion updates since the last time I used the external monitor. I had installed all the updates prior to connecting my external monitor again. However, a few days ago I tried to connect the external monitor and all I get is a "No Signal" message on my external monitor. The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI works on my LCD TV, so I know the MDP works. I have also replaced the MDP-to-DVI cord and the external display still doesn't work.Â
I connected the external monitor to another computer running Snow Leopard and the external monitor works. So, the external monitor does work.Â
I have seen a few posts aboout this, but nobody seems to have a solution that works or is directly on point to my issue. I have tried to use all the scenarios for plugging in the external monitor and external monitor power. I tried to reboot the laptop with and withoout the external monitor connected. Same thing with the exteernal monitor plugged in and no power, etc. Nothing works. I have tried to repeatedly turn the external monitor on and off while connected to the MacBook. Again, that doesn't work. Here is what I am running:Â
