Apr 1, 2012
I just had a pop-up tell me my SSD is full. But I have lots of RAM available. Computer does seem slow and delicate tho. What's up? Could my machine be spending SSD space and not RAM? I just had a pop-up tell me my SSD is full. I have tons of RAM available. Computer does seem slow and delicate tho. What's up?

I have downloaded too much stuff from iTunes - mostly movies and tv shows - , and now my macbook pro and iPad are full. i would like to save tv shows etc locally on an external drive but I dont know how to do it and how to ensure that they will be recoverable. I have purchased some 25GB iCloud in the hope that things would be saved anyway

Does anyone experience a LOT of very noisy vibration when using the CD/DVD drive? I'm running a presentation off of it, and every time it spools up to read more info, it's got a lot of extremely loud vibration. Using this support article, I notice a HUGE difference:

I just bought a 13 inch macbook pro about 2 days after the keynote, and it came in on the 15th. I opened it up and it worked pretty good. I noticed I saw the spinning pinwheel a little more than I think I should. My cousin's macbook did it less frequently than my new macbook pro. It was happening when I opened iTunes or Safari. So a few days ago I opened up iTunes and I saw the pinwheel, but then it kept going, and going, and itunes froze up and crashed. After that it has happened several times. The same with safari and iMovie. I am sort of angry because I spent a good amount of money on this and I don't think it should be happening. I can live with it, but I certainly hope this isn't the norm! I switched to mac so things would be easier.

My 100G space came up as full last night so I freed up about 15g. space, but now today I notice it is going way slow, taking forever to open or show data in files - eg if I click on the master application folder - the names of indiv. folders show but file content on right doesn't come up until about 30 secs, and the computer itself is making all sorts of whirring/clicking type sounds which i called "thinking" but it's as if the memory is still full and is operating at half it's speed.
I have a 2.16 GHz intel core duo processor, and memory is 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
Get info shows: Capacity of 99.69GB, avail is 14.11 GB
Any tips on what has happened since last night to today? I thought it would be running faster and accessing files really easily.
I just got a pop up saying: Your iDisk is unavailable. Make sure you are logged in to your MObile ME acct, then try again to access your iDisk.
COuld this be the problem? I've never seen this before. What is my iDisk, and what does it do?

I have a mac book pro...one of the older models...around 5 or 6 years old..the silver one with the silver around the screen part. Running Mac OS X 10.6.8,
2.33 GHz, 2GB ram.
Lately my computer has been rediculously slow with everything, but aside from that my issue is with my start up disc. I would have over 1.5 GB of space left, open up a photoshop file...make some alterations and save...and all of a sudden I have NO SPACE left. These alterations created the photoshop file to be like 50mb more. Its a 200mb file. So how can I go from 1.5 gigs to saving a 200mb .psd file and all of a sudden 0 hd space?
Sometimes I couldnt even save the .psd because when I opened it all of a sudden I have half a gig now. And even if I had half a gig why wouldnt I be able to save? I go to save and sometimes it says "your start up disc us full" - Is this different than my harddrive?
Is photoshop using some sort of weird caching thing?

I've had my black Macbook (early 2008) running Leopard for just over a year now, and I've had a pretty persistent problem (since November or so). A lot of different things that are even somewhat CPU intensive seem to always make my fan go crazy (up to ~6200 RPM), and a look at Activity Monitor shows that they're taking up 100% CPU. Here's a few things that sometimes make it happen:
-Finder, when I'm in a folder with video files (doesn't happen with every video, but with certain videos it always happens - Activity Monitor says Finder is running over 100% CPU and I need to relaunch it to get it to stop!)
-Flash videos in Mozilla/YouTube
-Any kind of game utilizing some amount of graphics
-Running a Windows virtual machine (sometimes)
I really doubt these things are actually that CPU intensive, so something's wrong. Any ideas?

I'm just setting up a Mac Mini for a friend and on power-on/start-up and also on shutdown I'm getting white text on a black screen which is obviously some kind of start-up log. I've had a fair few macs but have never seen this and certainly wouldn't expect it 'out of the box'.
What exactly is it and how do I stop it from happening ever?

Recently my buddy's macbook pro died. When we realized it was on it's way out, we moved his itunes library to an external hard drive. We had to consolidate it a couple times to get everything. We setup his new macbook pro to look at the external drive for his itunes library.
However, the new macbook pro is still storing music files locally (the external drive is always plugged in). I did a consolidation last night and noticed something weird. It's not jsut looking for the files that arent in the itunes library on the external drive and adding them, it is making full copies of the itunes libraries on the external drive. So, that means that my buddy has about 4 of each song in his itunes library folders (only one copy of the song shows up in itunes itself). So his Dave Matthews folder will show the album Crash as it's own folder, but within that folder there will be four copies of each song that is on the album.

I've been experiencing crashes when using iMovie '09, as well as most of the applications I use on a daily basis. My Finder has been crashing a lot as well after I installed iLife. This occurs a couple of times a day, and the error reports give the exception codes "KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at ... " and other variants of that. What is causing this? How can I fix it?
I feel like some crashes are due to the fact that I need more memory but I don't know about all the others.

I bought a Penryn Mac 13" last year, messed up logic board this summer with liquid damage but the HD with leopard 10.5.7 is still good. So I made the HD external by putting in an enclosure with all my music/software (I DJ). I bought a used MAc yesterday with Snow Leopard installed 10.6.1. This Mac recognizes my old external drive when plugged as a USB. BUt when I try and put that old HD in this computer, it does not recognize that HD. It displays a folder icon with a question in the centre of it. I don't want to DJ using my external drive all the time, I would like to use it internally so not worrying if the plug accidentally comes out.

I have about 2,000 still frames, all PNG files, that I wish to compile into a movie. They are a bit of a weird size (1049x870px) so iStopMotion doesn't work.
iMovie 8 is beyond useless for this since it downsizes them, works in a different frame rate (25fps as opposed to the 15fps that I need the final movie in), there seems to be no clear way to set the number of frames each still should last (unlike in iMovie 5), and above all, it cannot seem to import them in the correct order, and I don't have the time to manually import 2,400 files in order.

My friend was thinking of getting a new iMac, the only thing he does not like about them is the slot loading drive. He burns around 5 cd's/DVD's a day, a stack of 100 cd's does not last long with him. He does a lot of movie burning to watch it on his tv and wonders if after a year of tons of burning will the slot loading drive die out. He does not want to buy an external DVD burner as well which is what i use.

A couple weeks back, we switched from exchange 2007 to exchange 2010.The only change required on the OSX mail client was to change the server address.I have two macbook pros, one is a 2GB early vintage intel, and the other a more recent 4GB model. Both of them are configured for access to the exchange server. Both are running 10.6.Once the change was made, both clients started using huge amounts of memory. This isn't a leak, as is reported in some Lion threads, because it eventually comes back down again. When you start the client, it might use about 150MB of RAM.After a while I have seen as much as 1.6GB of RAM usage on the 4GB machine. If you take the exchange account out of the mix (disable it in preferences) the client consistently stays at about 75MB of RAM.The peak isn't limited by the client as far as I can tell -- it basically uses up all free memory and drives the system completly nuts. Many of the applications no longer perform well once they are subjected to memory starvation, and this includes the mail client itself.
I am now running the activity window with Mail to see if I can spot a pattern, but in one case I watched Mail's memory usage grow in Activity Monitor with nothing in the Activity screen.I aso tried creating a new account instance on the 4GB machine, but without any cached data the behavior was far worse. It very quickly consumes the entire machine and doesn't seem to return to normal.I am firmly convinced this is a side effect of changing the exchange service or one of the exchange settings, if for no other reason than the behavior is new on two systems. It's still unforgivable for the Mail client to do this -- if it can consume all available memory then it needs to monitor itself and defer or break up what it is trying to do.I am a great fan of this mail client but this is so unusable that it might force me back to outlook running in a VM.

this isn't a big deal but I've found that when I shutdown or restart with a few applications (even longer if there are a lot open), it sort of just waits (showing me the spinning wheel of eternity - SWOE lolz) after every application is closed (which is almost instant) at the desktop, I can only see my background picture, sometimes it does this at the blue screen occasionally, does anyone know why.
It can wait for up to 20 or 30 seconds, this is on my sig rig w/ the SSD - so I find it a bit odd.

Our visitor's laptop has received 80+ messages all of which don't look like email at all - they look just like notes, yellow background, lines, margin.
...and the contents are complete nonsense. I went online to her mail server and these messages were not there.
why she should be apparently downloading a bunch of notes with garbage in them? I didn't even know you /could/ download notes!

Don't know how to file a possible bug report. I checked my OS-X version and it is 10.5.8, maybe more recent versions have been fixed: Here is a cut & paste from the gfortran bugzilla site [reply] [-]2012-06-04 02:38:12 UTC Calls to fortran subroutines that use large temporary arrays fill up 'idle memory' on the MAC-OSX, as can be seen with 'top' or the Mac 'activity monitor'. I found that I can get around this by using: call system('purge') in the code to evoke the command line 'purge' from within the program before the 'return' statement for such subroutines to free the idle memory; but I was wondering whether something could be done more fundamentally at the compiler level to avoid this problem. Without such clearing of idle memory I used to hear lots of disk access being done to get around the small amount of free 'core' memory. Massive arrays would eat up many Gb of core memory by turning it to 'idle memory'. Maybe there is a compile time option that I do not know about. [reply] [-]Comment 12012-06-04 02:47:43 UTC This sounds more like a bug in the Mac OS X kernel/libc and how it handles memory allocation.

I am upgrading my mid 2012 MBP with an internal SSD. I have16 RAM. OS is Mavericks.
I edit videos using a mix of photos (imported layers via photoshop), short animations, short video clips. I do some very basic stop animation also. So each media file is not heavy (photos, pics, short videos), but I do a lot of layering and compositing in FCPX. I had a lot of delays and freezes with 5400 rpm HDD… so I decided to upgrade to SSD.
Some people have told me to edit it all on my internal SSD as the media files are not big..
Everywhere else on the web I read that all media / libraries should be on an external while I edit them. But most of these contributors are using huge video files, HD, which is not my case.
So – with small media files but lots of editing and effects / animation, should I spend the extra money on a good external 7200 rpm USB3 to edit from ? Or just use external drive for storage and not editing.
Not going for TB as I read there would not be a difference between USB3 and TB on a 7200 rpm external drive (difference is felt when using RAID, r SSD external) ...
