I'm having trouble with a couple of SD Cards.I cannot delete files or modify them (they are set to read-only), and when I run a verify scan in disk utility, it sais they require repair, but repair is grayed out.I also cannot reformat.What can I do to just wipe these 2 cards and reformat them?I already have all the necessary data backed up.

I have a Macbook pro 17" (2011) running Mavericks with a Crucial 960Gb SSD and a 750Gb WDC in the optical bay. My ssd is divided into 710 Gb to OS X and 182 Gb to Windows 7 Bootcamp. All was well until the other day when the OS X partition failed to boot. I got the grey screen and the very slow progress bar which after 15Â minutes powered the machine off. The Bootcamp partion continues to work without issues. I booted from an install disk and ran disk utility. The OS X partition appears greyed out on the left panel. I attempt a repair disk and after a 15Â minute delay it says it is unable to repair the last action being "updating boot support partitions for the volume as required". Its all backed up regularly on time machine but when I boot an install usb and attempt to restore from time machine, the OSX disk does not appear as an option. I go back into disk utility and attemp to erase/repartition the disk to start a new install but it refuses to unmount. I appear to be running out of options,
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy MBP recently had a bunch of problems with the logic board and speakers. I brought it into the Apple Store (on Monday) and they gave me the option of them sending it into a repair center, or them repairing it locally in store. I requested that they sent out just because I was curious to see how long it would take. To my surprise, my MBP arrived, fixed and as good as new on my doorstep today. That's amazingly fast for sending it out to a offsite repair center. The repair center is in Philadelphia. I live in Maine. You do the math. When I've had things repaired locally in the Apple Store it's taken weeks to repair instead of days because they need to order the parts.
Anyways, the point of this thread was to suggest to people that they choose the offsite repair option. It's amazingly fast, and it saved me a trip to the Apple Store (they shipped my MBP directly to my house).
What is the best way to ReFormat my MacBook Pro ?
I currently have 60 GB of Apps and other stuff, and want to do a clean install of my entire harddrive....
can i just move all my apps over to an external harddrive and then put them back on after my re install ?
Will i have to re type in all the serials for photoshop and dreamweaver, etc....?
I was let down when I found that I had to reformat my MBP 13" after 6 months of use. I also had Bootcamp installed but I found that my MBP would take a long time to boot into OSX and when I did, I had a lot of spinning beach balls. Even my Bootcamp began giving me errors. After using the utilities to find out what the health issues were, I found that my repairs to the hard drive were unsuccessful and I had to reformat.Mind you I had a time machine back up, but I was frustrated that after just six months of owning the MBP I had to reformat. It brought back memories of dealing with Windows. I mean, if I have to do this again in 6 months, I mine as well use Windows since I basically did the same thing then too. (And it was cheaper!)

What I want.... this computer is about 2 years old. I want to reformat it to square one. Like brand new. I already backed everything up.
When I called apple, I mentioned I just purchased Snow Leapord.. they said.. no biggy, just install that and it will replace everything back to square one. Well, that didn't work. I still have all my old programs.
After reformatting my macbook, it seems to be running considerably slower than the "out of box" condition. For example, before reformatting restarting the system was quick. Now, when i want to restart, i have to wait 30 seconds before it restarts.

My 2012 15" Macbook Pro (updated to Lion, and assume I have the most recent updated version) is running excruciatingly slow. Takes forever to start-up, and to wake up from sleep. It acts as if it is running a billion tasks at once. I updated to Lion with backing up (I know, I know, I screwed up). I then created another Admin profile, which runs MUCH better. I have run "verify disc" and "repair disc" numerous times and have not seen any improvement. I want to erase the drive and reload the system. In PC parlance, I want to reformat.Â

I took my late 2007 macbook in because the case was cracked. I read that this was a known issue and they would repair for free.(I had no warranty) also my battery was expanding and bloated, so much that it will no longer fit in my comp.
When I took it in, the tech said that my bottom case was cracked and he said that wasn't part of the known issue. He said it was caused by accidental damage (it was cracked clean through, so much so that it could be physically separated from the comp.(I informed him that the comp had never been dropped or damaged in anyway, he apparently didn't believe me but said he would see what he could do.
Anyway, he said he could fix the top case ( but they would not fix the bottom case)and give me a new battery although he had never seen a battery with the problem that mine had. He said it was probably expanded cells. I agreed to that as something is better than nothing but then, I asked him if the battery expanding could have caused the bottom case to crack since it was cracked near the battery compartment but on the side of the comp. After he tinkered around for a bit with the battery and the cracked part, he said he wasn't sure but he would send it in for repairs and I would not be charged.
First he said he would quote me a repair price and I told him that I had no intentions of paying for anything. After several instances of him running to the back to talk to people, he agreed to send it in. On the repair form it is listed as tier 4 accidental damage and I know that the tier 4 comes with a hefty charge for repair. Anyway, I am out of town and my comp is scheduled to be returned to me today. I dropped it off at the apple store on the 30th, it was received by the repair center on the 1st, repaired today( the second) and shipped back to me today and scheduled to be delivered today as well.
I was trying to find out if they actually repaired the bottom case or not as I will not be home to receive my comp until next week sometime. The repair form also said call if additional repairs are needed to quote a price. I have not received any calls at this number and do not know if they left any messages on my home phone. The repair turnaround seems rather quick and I was just wondering if they actually repaired it or sent in back in the same condition.
Apple support has no details of the actual repair just the time it was received, repaired and sent back to me. Also will they just leave it outside because no one is home to receive it?
Every-time I repair permissions using the disk utility it says that the permissions are repaired, but then I click to verify permissions and it is all as it was before... What can I do?

Can I do it with the SL discs that came with my new iMAC because when I bought the MBP, it came with no discs. Or is there a quick way to remove all personal information? Knowing that I bought it as an upgrade, I should install the leopard cd that came with my mbp. This is where i'm getting confused, should i install all the updates before installing snow or can I immediately pop in snow and install it? And what else should I keep in mind when reformatting? Anyway, the other day I was cleaning stuff I didn't need anymore off it and I somehow accidentally moved the "library" folder that's in the "system" folder in to the trash. I tried removing it but it wouldn't let me, then my mac froze and I restarted and it just showed the Apple logo while flashing an anti-logo and a folder with a question mark on it. I took it to the Genius bar and the guy asked me if I had my files backed up and I said no, but he told me a way I could back them up on my girlfriend's mac using a fire cable and then just reformat it myself. So I bought the cable and put the files on my girflriend's mac. However, now when I'm trying to reformat it from the installer disk, it doesn't seem to be working. It shows the Apple logo and the loading gear underneath and then it switches to that anti-logo (circle with slash through it) and the loading gear continues. I let it run like this all night but still no change. I tried resetting the PRAM and other things. I've held C and held D to run a hardware test and it says there are no problems. I've held Alt/Opt and it recognizes the disk but it doesn't seem to load anything from it.

How do you reformat a MacBook Pro (OS X 10.7.3) 2011s Hard drive? I already backed up all the files I wanted to save. But since I have the new Macbook pro 2011 (only a few months since I got it) it didn't come with an installation disc, but instead already came with all the applications. Okay so I don't know what happened but before I reformatted my OS X, I deleted my 50GB Boot Camp partition, but when I reformat I notice that it says I only have "200GB" available on my HD instead of "250GB", I'm not sure what happened to the partition I "deleted"I'm still new to a Mac, is there a way to check how much space is used already and etc? I really don't know what happened to the 50GB.

Last month I removed my super drive from my MBP i7 and replaced it with an SSD using the New Modus caddy. This was done so I could place a 1TB Scorpio Blue in the HDD bay. Last night, I left my computer on, and I must have accidentally pulled out the power cord. When I tried to wake it, nothing happened, so I reattached the magsafe and, low and behold, OSX would not load. I restarted with the same result - the grey and black startup wheel spins continuously (not the rainbow beachball) and the OS wont load. In response I attached my external superdrive and ran disk utilities on the SSD drive, which contains the OS. Apparently, the drive is corrupt and cannot be repaired. Disk utilities displays a "B-tree" error and recommends that I reformat the drive after removing any files that I am able to.
is there anyway that I can repair my SSD without reformatting? I thought about swapping my HDD from my old MBP for the Scorpio Blue drive and selecting it as the start up drive so I could try to transfer files, but its not a S-ATA connection. Would Disk Warrior or something similar be more effective at repairing the drive than Apple Disk Utility?
I simply can't take any of my pictures off of my SD card. I've tried using the USB cable that came with the camera itself, as well as a USB card reader. iPhoto, and the laptop itself does not recognize the card, or that there is any device mounted at all. I've also tried checking "External Disks" in Finder Preferences, didn't seem to work.

I've been trying to install xp pro sp2 using boot camp on a macbook 2.2Ghz. It does the initial setup where i reformat the xp partition in fat32 and then when it goes to boot into the xp installer it says: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows root>system32hal.dll. please re-install a copy of the above file.
