MacBook Pro :: 15" - Trackpad / Keyboard Rougher Surface?
Feb 20, 2010So after buying my 15" MBP to replace my 13" Unibody Aluminium MacBook, I noticed that the aluminium arm rest - trackpad/keyboard enclosure section feels much rougher on the 15" than the 13". It's not an issue, I'm just interested to see if anyone knows why this is.

Oct 31, 2010I am trying to decide whether to get the 2010 model or the cheaper 2009 model. These are the differences that I've found so far for the base model. For arguments sake, let's say they both have 4gb ram (most people selling them have upgraded to 4gb)
2010: 2.4ghz, longer battery, nvidia 320m
2009: 2.26ghz, (slightly) shorter battery, nvidia 9400m
Having a slightly slower cpu, less battery life (about 7 hours rather than 9) and a slightly weaker gpu don't bother me so much, as I will be mostly using the macbook pro for internet surfing and writing word documents
My question is, are there any other differences? (that would make me go for the 2010 rather than the 2009 model) - maybe differences in the display? shape? something else?

Nov 2, 2010i am contemplating buying a late 2008 mbp air i found for $800 on CL. it has the 1.86 ghz 2gig ram and an 128 gb ssd. would that be comparable to the new 2010 version? i know the new one will edge it out, but by how much? i do a lot of art using flash, illustrator, and ps but just want to use this machine occasionally when i travel, ill have another machine for the heavy lifting if needed be. is that a good deal? or should i just wait and get the 2010 version which is double that?

MacBook Pro :: 2010 Model Cleaning Sticky Keys?
May 13, 2010I was just wondering if anyone can offer some advice on cleaning macbook pro keys.
I spilt pepsi on my 15' macbook pro about a week ago and somehow managed to save it. I took it to next byte and they took it apart and cleaned it, although they informed me that they couldn't clean the keys for me and that they were sticking from the pepsi residue. They told me the entire top case would need replaced at a cost of $630.
I have looked up how to clean the keyboard on macbook pros, but am having trouble finding the right model, everything i find is from older versions of macbook pros.
I need to know what I should do to stop the keys sticking, and if with the new pros if it really is that hard to remove and clean the keys?
What should i do taking into account that I have never taken a computer apart before and wouldn't really know what to do.
It is the 2.4 GHz 15" macbook pro.

Jun 3, 2010Im thinking of upgrading my MBP hard drive up to around 500GB or 1TB (5400rpm and 8 cache). I know Mac's are funny when upgrading things so is there a limit to hard drive space? Also how much power does the current hard drive use as i dont want to loose much battery life. will it slow down my mac at all, i have heard about people getting problems when upgrading hard drive. Lastly will it void any of my warranty (i know the new hard drive wont be under warranty)

MacBook Air :: Upgrade Hard Drive In Late 2010 Model?
Jun 22, 2012I have a late 2010 Macbook Air, 13 inch, with the 126 gb hard drive. I was curious if there was a way to upgrade the hard drive at all. I know this isn't "officially" suported, but I've seen some compines online that claim to do it.
I haven't priced out the SSD drives or anything, so I'm not even sure if it's cost effective to upgrade.Â

Aug 2, 2010According to Apple's Synthetic Performance Tests, Mac Pro 12-core beats the previous generation Mac Pro 8-core by 1,3 (1,2). Which seems pretty normal.
But by doing quite a simple equation, comparing the power of the new MP 8-cores to the previous generation MP 8-core (based on these ∆ 1,3 / 1,2), the new 8-core system seems to be about 0,87 / 0,8 of the previous one, which is considerably less powerful.

Aug 27, 2010seeing as there's at least 3 threads on this topic, and I've been posting in all of them, I figured I'd create this thread to help consolidate the info we know so far. Please note, this is for *OFFICIAL* Apple Radeon 5770/5870 cards, NOT flashed cards. I'll also try to keep it updated with more info as it comes in. Also, feel free to chime in if something is wrong.
- 5870 and 5770 work with no some issues in 2009 and 2008 Mac Pro's
- UPDATE: Weepul pointed out that Rob-ART from Barefeats had some trouble with a 30" Cinema Display and a MDP --> dual link DVI adapter on 2008/09/10 models, though he thinks this may be due to a bad adapter
- UPDATE 2: Rob-ART says OWC got a 30" working on MDP of 5870. (post)- UPDATE 3: grey17 says the 5770 works in 2009 Mac Pro (link)- 5870 and 5770 work in SOME 2006 Mac Pro's:
- Rob-ART from Barefeats says it works.
- OWC says the 5770 only works with DVI works flawlessly on 2006/2007 (MDP and DVI) (post) (confirmed by netkas), and the 5870 doesn't work at all. (link).......
MacBook Pro :: 2.66GHz New Model Versus Previous Model Conundrum?
Aug 28, 2009PC World (in the UK) are selling the old 2.66GHz 15" model for �1,149 (rather than �1,499 for the new model).
The differences between it and the new model are summarised below (as I understand them)
Battery: Old: 5hr, New:7hr non-swappable
Display: New: Better colour gamut (apparently?)
Processor: Old: 6MB cache, New: 3MB cache
Card bay: Old: Express34, New: SD
Of the above only the battery life is of any relevance to me (unless the display quality is really that different?). The SD card would be marginally more useful than the Express card.
MacBook Pro :: Ditching My A1226 Model MBP For The Newer Model?
Sep 9, 2009I've been contemplating recently (as most mac users do) about switching my 2 year old MBP (2.2 ghz, 2gb ram, 8600m) to the new MBP (15" 2.8, newer gfx, touchpad and a few minor details).
I've been eying the ebay prices for some time and my particular model (with charger, snow leopard, original accessories but w/o box) is valued at about 700gbp. Perhaps people might disagree with me here - how much is it really worth ?
My main point / question is really at what point should I ditch the existing MBP in favor of the new mbp - does it really offer me that much of a benefit at this time to upgrade? I'd sure like the new graphics card in there (is it really that much better?) but I'm not sure there's a significant enough difference there.
On the other hand if I wait much longer the MBP will become pretty devalued and not get me much back for the new and improved MBP - maybe apple's going to improve them soon anyway?

MacBook :: Sticky Surface - Something Like Wax
Nov 16, 2010This may sound silly, but the sticky surface of the new MacBook really bothers me. I'm wondering if anyone else feels this way, and whether using something like wax might make it just slippery enough to be closer to the MacBook Pro. Any suggestions?

Oct 26, 2010I have an iPad 32GB WiFi and a MacBook Pro as well so I was trying very hard to justify myself in getting an 11" MBA but ending up talking myself out of it. The 13" MBP is perfect for my uses. It's already lightweight and portable as it is. After playing with the 11" in the Apple store, I was impressed on how light it was. This no doubt blows away any netbook or any notebook in it's weight class in terms of size and performance. However, the MBP's battery life, hard drive space, and processing power OUTWEIGHS the reasons of dumping my 13" MBP for the Air. Also, I have it hooked up to a 21.5 Inch HP monitor at home and it's good enough to use as a main computer at home, and light enough to take on the road.
If I needed to lookup something quickly in bed or around the house, that's where the iPad comes in. If I needed to send a quick e-mail, my HTC Evo is already great at doing that. If I didn't have a 13" MBP or even the iPad, I would have most likely went ahead and purchased the MBA. Just now at this point, spending another $1000+ or getting rid of my MBP doesn't make much sense... yet.
MacBook Pro :: Clean Surface Of Keys?
Nov 5, 2010A couple days ago I accidentally spilled lemonade all over my room. I didn't think I had gotten any on my keyboard, but apparently I did, as some of my keys are now sticky and really hard to press. Is there any way that I can 'unstick' these myself, or do I have to take it to my nearest tech store? (fyi my keys are most sticky under the keyboard and not on top of them). The computer is a 2010 MacBook Pro. Also, is there a way to clean the surface of your keys? I'm not too thrilled about the way they look right now and I would like to try and get them back to what they looked like when I bought it.

Feb 18, 2008I showed no emotion and people were asking me why lol. I really had it bottled up. The guy smacked his soft drink with his hand and it spilled onto my closed MBA. Thankfully it only made a puddle on top (like 30% of the surface of the top) of the MBA near the apple logo. Couple drops spilled off to the front right of the MBA, so just along the edges did the coke touch. Nothing inside on the screen, keys, or trackpad.
I went straight to the closest bathroom and found this foam soap and paper towel. I wanted to get any remnants of the coke off, so it wouldn't get sticky or do something to the aluminum.

Apr 28, 2008Today I discovered that my MBA wobbles while on a perfectly flat surface. Has anyone had this problem? I bought it in early March. It is driving me nutz while typing! I keep it in pristine condition. It doesn't even have a scratch on it and is always in it's WaterField sleeve in my messenger bag.

Jun 30, 2009I just noticed after a few weeks of using it it has these perfectly evened scratchings over the top casing even though i primarily use a wireless keyboard. im not sure if its from anything specific. i dont wear sweaters, have any bracelets, or wipe it with wool. i just had n iKlear cloth on it thats about it. i doubt im going to complain about it to apple but i was wondering since it looks like it was ingrained into the actual aluminum perhaps its in the design or fabrication of it? i just noticed it in bright natural light but otherwise cant even tell its there. this is the only other discrepancy with the umbp17 i have aside form the oily key wearing.

Sep 13, 2009I got my 13" macbook pro about a month ago and have some concerns. Because my palms perspire excessively sometimes, my keyboard gets too sticky for comfort and the trackpad loses its smoothness and traction. To get around this problem, I have been using wet wipes/wet tissues to clean the surface of my macbook, particularly the keyboard and the touchpad. I sometimes use a damp cloth too. I never thought about this until I realize that there are crevices beneath every key on the keyboard and water can theoretically seep through. I have been wiping my macbook about once every day. 1. Will this have any adverse effect on the keyboard or the touchpad? 2. Even if water does seep into the thin crevices, would this corrode the interior or create rust? Will the water reach the other parts of the macbook interior, like the processor, graphics processing, DVD, RAM, etc.? 3. Yesterday I ran out of the standard wet wipes that I usually use and in place of those, I used a Dettol wipe. To my horror, it produced quite a substantial amount of foam, and I quickly wiped the blotches of foam away using tissue paper. Will my keyboard and the interior be affected in any way? I am typing this new thread on the same macbook and there are no noticeable problems, yet. I may be paranoid, but I wish to be sure. 4. Will accidental wet wipe contact with any of the periphery sockets, like the USB and firewire, lead them to malfunction in any way?

Apr 15, 2010I've been lurking MacRumors ever since 'the wait for Arrandale' began and finally decided to sign up now so I could post this thread. I've been a Windows user for a long time now and I have a Win7 rig at home. However, I'll be going to uni later this year so I need a good portable notebook that's suitable for the common mailing 'n surfing, but also for doing some programming in Eclipse (Java) and PHP work etc. I still have my Win7 box at home for gaming and things that require larger screensize, but for the notebook... I feel really attracted to OSX with a MBP.
It will be my first Mac, but my desktop dualboots with OSX and I love it. So that's why I have decided that my school notebook will be a Mac. This is why I have been closely watching the rumors for the new MBPs and ofcourse I was pretty disappointed when I saw that the 13" model still had a C2D cpu... It's not that I need a beefed up CPU in my notebook (... I have a 3.6 GHz quad at home ), but it feels 'wrong' to buy a MBP 13": even the 2009 MacBook has a C2D, so what will the MB 2010 update bring? Is it really worth the extra money? Anyone with a similar situation?
MacBook Pro :: Overheating While Playing On A Soft Surface
Sep 10, 2010As you can probably guess, it happens while playing a game (Starcraft 2). It's only happened when playing on a soft surface (in bed, on a pillow, etc.). The simple answer would be to simply not use it on these surfaces, but it seems illogical that you WOULDN'T be able to use a laptop. . . . on your lap.
