MacBook Pro :: No Audio Output When Connect MBP To My TV
Sep 11, 2010
I just bought a converter cable to be able to put things from my laptop onto the TV. More specifically, I bought this one: [URL]
I've read the reviews and they were all really great. The cable is excellent for images; however, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do the sound.
The reviews said that the audio output option under system preferences should show up with the receiver, but all it has is my computer speakers.

For some reason, I can't get Logic Express 8 to output audio to my Mac's attached speakers. It outputs fine through my M-Audio interface, though, but I'd just like to listen without headphones.

I've had a problem with my MacBook Pro (2008) for a while. If I connect a headset or external speakers, there will be no sound from the Macs audio output. The built in speakers is working perfectly. Do you have any idears what could be the reason? I tryed do reset the Pram but with no luck. If it helps there is no red light coming out of the macs output. The problem occurred when I connected a mini-jack for my speakers. Maybe the output thinks it's a S/PDIF and not a normal audio output?

I own a 2011 Macbook Pro and as stated above I can only hear out of my left ear. I've tried multiple headphones, checked the settings and tried changing the balance and it completely shuts down the music if I move it over to the right ear. I am running OS X Lion as extra information.

Well i'm progressing with my connecting the Mac to the TV... Have the video going fine with the Mini DVI to HDMI but for the life of me I can't get the audio output going. I have the 3.5mm RCA jack cable in the output from the Mac and the computer has recognized that it's plugged in and comes up at headphones. Now the problem is getting the TV recognize the audio input.Â
I've read elsewhere that there should be a way to set the TV to allow a video HDMI input along with an analouge audio signal.Â

I was using my 13" White Macbook (Spring 07) all day today, listening to music on headphones while working. I brought my computer over to a friend's house and attempting to line out some audio from Garage Band to speakers through the headphone jack and suddenly all audio began to have skips & spaces every second or so. I can still the hear songs but they are constantly interrupted. I tried Itunes & audio from the internet, and two different pairs of headphones I know work. Same problem every time. The strange thing is that the audio works perfectly out of the internal speakers. Has anyone had this same problem? I haven't seen anything on the web that was similar. I tried the Q-Tip/Toothpick trick suggested on a bunch of other threads. But I don't think it's an issue of the computer not adjusting to the headphone setting. Also tried to resetting the battery, but that didn't work either.

I have purchased a optical audio cable to hook up my 15" mbp to my LCD.One end is the toslink and the other end is the toslink adapter, when I put both end into its place. The speaker icon turns gray and I cannot adjust the sound level and the music stops from the laptop speaker. Also, the optical digital audio out option is not showing up in audio preference.

I recently had a cracked panel on an old Macbook Pro 15 inch (A1260) and just replaced it with a new one. Ever since i replaced it i have had no sound. Now i consider myself an experienced mac user so i have checked under my sound prefences and it doesnt list anything under sound input or output and things are grayed out. I also had the guy who replaced my panel, who is also my friend, check everything out and he hasn't been able to figure out why there is no sound. he gave me a usb midi device that shows up and works but when unplugged theres nothing.Â
Another thing that has started is, video online will stop every 11 seconds, and thats with me clicking on the bar when it stops playing after the first 11 seconds.

i have an intel macbook running leopard with the most recent update. A problem arose a day before the update was installed wherein my macbook no longer transmits sound through the headphone jack. i have no reason to suspect a hardware failure, there has been no damage to the computer. is there any way this could (please, god) be a software failure? and if so, one that i can fix?

I have dual diaplay's through HDMI, and use this to play dvd's. What I want to do is use the Macbook for other uses and have the sound comming through the macbook, wilst not affecting the sound from the movie being played through the HDMI out put. Currently in the settings for sound outup, all audio will either go through one of the options. How do I split the sound output per program.

I have owned my MacBook Pro since June 2010, and have always used a pair of independently powered (via adapter) external Dell speakers for audio output. Since upgrading to Lion about 1 month ago, I was having intermittent audio issues, which were resolved by re-starting my computer (not ideal but it worked). Today, the speakers just stopped working. The internal speakers work, but when I plug the externals into the headphone port, they don't produce sound. Earbuds in the same port also don't work (I know the earbuds are good). The external speakers are being recognized by the sound panel in system preferences.

I have a (little) problem with my new MacBook Air 2014 (13 inch.) running on 10.9.4 : when I connect it to any HDMI device (Philips monitor or Sony TV through Marantz amplifier) through a mini DP-HDMI adapter, I can't set audio output to HDMI because this option does not exist... However, I have video signal.Â
I've tried lots of "solutions", but nothing is working :
    - Shutting down, restarting, sleeping with and without the cable connected
    - Change HDMI cable
    - Reset PRAMÂ
Finally, I think the problem come from the Macbook because I have an other laptop (a Thinkpad with a mini displayport, with Ubuntu 14.04) and the video and sound are working normally.

My friend is looking into buying the new 27" iMac Core i7 to replace his PC desktop. The only thing holding him back is that he has an analog surround sound system he uses for his speakers. I am having a hard time myself finding a converter that can make his speakers work in the iMac's optical digital output port. Any products out there that will do that?

The speakers on my Macbook have suddenly stopped working. If you plug headphones in, fine. In the system preferences, 'built in speakers' are no longer an option for audio output. Just 'digital out'. When I try and change the volume of the speakers, the symbol is greyed out, and there's a little "you can't do this" symbol.

I would like to connect my Macbook Pro to my hometheatre via HDMI. Normally no problem with the mini display port and an HDMI adapter, but the port is already used for the 27" cinema display... Is there another adapter available that let`s me connect both, an HDMI device and the cinema display to my Macbook? I only care about the sound - I want to get digital sound to my receiver. (I am not interested in the solution via airport express and then connect via analogue audio cable - I am looking to get a digital sound signal all the way through...) about Macobook Pro: mid 2010, 17", Processor 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5, Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB) Â

So while at a gig last night with my band, we ran a video from my computer to screens on stage. The chain looked like so:Â
MBP -> Mini-DisplayPort -> MDP/HDMI converter -> 4-way HDMI Splitter -> LCD MonitorsÂ
Now sometime during takedown, someone just decided to unplug something from my computer without consulting me or taking any proper precautions. Now my audio is stuck on Digital Output (type digital optical out). Here's what I know, and what I've tried.I have reset the PRAM/NVRAM?I have killed coreaudio a few times with no luck?I have deleted without progress:
1) com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist
2) com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
3) com.apple.systemsound.plist
I have restarted my computer?I have attempted to use Audio MIDI Setup?I have googled:
1) com.apple.systemsound
2) macbook pro stuck on digital out audio no red light
3) force resetting to internal audio osx
4) force reset coreaudio osx
[code]....

I recently downloaded the lastest OS update (Lion X 10.7.4) on my MBP that I purchased in November of 2011, and since downloading it my MBP has been making a constant "humming" noise from the right speaker/disc drive area. I also don't have any audio output for FaceTime or Skype. I attempted to use Photo Booth to record a video and it doesn't record any audio. I attempted to reset SMC and reinstall Lion with no resolution of the problems.

My sound card seems to be meesing up. It switches back an forth from "Internal Speakers" or "Headpohones" to "Digital Output". For some reason the optical source keeps getting flipped on and is really annoying. I tried blowing out dust to see if that was causeing the comptuer's confusion, but that didn't work. Until I can make time to go to the apple store, is there anyway for me to turn off that certain connection through terminal commands or something?

I have a 13" mid 2011 MacBook Air and a new ViewSonic VX2453 monitor. I used the Monoprice mini display port to HDMI converter with audio and connected the monitor to my computer's thunderbolt port. The video works perfectly, but the sound isn't working at all. I set my computer's sound output in settings to VX2453 series (type: HDMI), and I set my monitor's audio input to HDMI. Nothing. I also tried changing the frequency in Audio MIDI Setup, which someone recommended on amazon for the monoprice adapter, but that didn't work either.Â
I tested the monitor's sound by switching audio input instead to "audio in" and connected to my headphone jack, and that worked so the monitor's sound is fine.Â

When I start my Macbook Pro (mid 2009 15") I get the familiar audio chime. However, when it finishes startup and I get to my desktop, I have no audio, and the audio icon up top is grayed out. The audio output jack works fine. I can use speakers and headphones. I've tried the solution of wiggling around a headphone plug in the jack, as well as doing the same with a toothpick. I've also reset the PRAM. For some reason, the problem persists. When I open sound settings in preferences, the only device listed is "Digital Out" and there is a message under it saying "The Selected Device has No Output Controls." This just happened to me the other day, I plugged a pair of apple headphones in used them and then unplugged them. The next day I noticed that I was not getting any sound from my macbook air, no startup sound, no OS sounds, and even the headphones are not detected when plugged in. I've tried all the tricks and so far nothing.
Of course my mac is just out of warranty at the end of March and I'm going to imagine this is a small fortune to get fixed. Since last time I took it in while it was in warranty they wanted 900 bucks to replace my HDD
Anyone else run across this, I'm thinking of just throwing it on craiglist or ebay for like 900 bucks as is and buying a normal laptop
