I currently have a Motorola SBG900 for my all-in-one solution wireless cable modem gateway for my MS XP desktop & laptop home network.
I will be buying a MBP and the TC for my existing home network. I will be connecting the time capsule/WAN point to the the SBG900 Ethernet connection and disabling the SBG900 wireless component to benefit of the 802n/g. The TC will be my router/firewall and the SBG900 firewall will disabled. The SBG900 will still be my dhcp server.

Sep 11, 2014I have an iMac and a macbook pro that I used to be able to share files between but ever since I moved 3 months ago I can't get it to work. Also, now my phone and my wife's phone are inseparably connected. She seems to be getting all of my text messages but I don't get hers. We also bought new computers right before we moved so that might have something to do with it. Both computers are on my account and have my name. It would be nice to get this working again - tired of walking ten feet with a flash drive to share files ....

OS X :: Adding MacBook To Windows7 Network?
Feb 9, 2010I am relatively new mac and networking for that matter! I am having trouble seeing my mac on my Windows 7 PC, I guess the biggining is a good place to start, so here is what iv done. On my Macbook, I've gone to system preferences/network/airport/advanced/WINS and put in the name of my workgroup "WORKGROUP" and put my gateway ip in for the winservers. But not seeing the mac on the PC. I've been struggling all week trying to share a drive out from a mac and mount it remotely onto a windows 7 machine. Also I haven't been able to see any of my macs in the network in windows explorer on the windows 7 machine.
Eventually I found a solution, which I thought others may find useful:
Goto Start Menu
Search for: Local
Hit Enter
Select Local Security Policy
Goto Local Policies> Security Options
Double Click on Network security: LAN Manager Authentication
Change level to: Send LM # LTLM Responses
Then:
Goto Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP
De-select Require 128-bit encryption
Hit OK
But still no luck, all I want to be able to do is move files back and forth from the Mac to pc, and visa-versa.

OS X :: Adding Home Folder To New HDD
Nov 13, 2008I got an HDD from a friend and its pretty faster than the one my Mac Pro has. What I want to do is, put all the system files, apps etc in that new HDD, but have my home folder on my old HDD which is bigger. How can I do that from software side? I am guessing it would cause problems to just move my home folder to another HDD.

May 23, 2012On my Mac Mini, I have set up a new user because of problems with the OS. So far, it is working fine. I also have a G5 running OS 10.4.11. There is an account on both machines with the same name. However, the new account on the Mini is a different name. The G5 does not offer the "login as" (at least that I can see, so my access to the new account on the Mini is limited to a dropbox. To simplify: A is the account on both the Mini and the G5, B is the account only on the Mini. I tried extending the permissions on B's home directory, but that did not work. Using get info, I unlocked the file then tried to add A to the list of users. For some reason, nothing happened.Â
How can I give user A permission to access user B's home directory on the Mini?

MacBook Pro :: How Everyone Using Home Network
Jan 4, 2011I received my new 15" MBP last night and quickly set up a network between my 08 iMac and the new MBP. Nothing fancy - Verizon FIOS router with Airport Express connected by ethernet cable - AE set up in Bridge mode, and both computers connected to the AE wireless network. Still pretty amazing to a first-time home networker. I shared my entire iMac iphoto library and itunes library and was able to view, play, and import on the MBP. I shared some files from the iMac and that worked like a champ on the MBP.
I was even more amazed with the Back to my Mac feature. Instantly able to get screen access and file access. Pretty amazing how easy it was. I had set up a Epson wireless printer on the iMac. Simply hit + on the MBP, selected the Epson, and printed wirelessly seconds later. I would still be flailing with my Windows machine. How does everyone use their home network? Anything to share that I'm missing? Any capability I need to start taking advantage of?

Oct 4, 2010Maybe not the best subforum to post in but I couldn't see where else I could post it.
My brother and I both have MBP's and we'd like to share a hard drive connected to out WiFi router. We'd also like to use the new 'AirPlay' technology that'll be coming out soon.
Since I've never assembled a home network before, I'd like to know what are all of the components that I'd need?
An external hard drive and WiFi router running to an Airport Express Base and then using everything over the wireless network?
How would I connect a printer to this too?
Sorry for the possibly confusing questions, I just don't to go out and buy anything I don't need.
MacBook Air :: Sharing CD / DVD From Win XP Box Over Home Network
Dec 31, 2010This is my first Mac and I haven't purchased the Superdrive yet. I've been searching Google and found a lot of "hits" on the general topic, but either it's using a different OS (slight difference in screens) or glances over the topic. Can anyone recommend a good thread or site that details how to share a CD/DVD from a Windows XP (Home Edition) box over a home network (Linksys 4 port/wireless) to a MBA (new). The MBA successfully connects to the wireless router and I can access the internet. The Desktop (Windows XP box) successfully connects via RJ45.
Secondly if the above is fairly easy, I'd love to know how I can print from the MBA through the network connection to the PC. The printer is a Xerox WorkCentre M15 (it's a office grade machine which I had presumed works well in a shared environment.) The printer is connected to the PC via a USB connection. However I've ordered a Buffalo LinkStation (I think that's the name) which is a NAS box that has print sharing capabilities, so I could hook the printer up that way if necessary to use for both the PC & Mac.
Mac :: MacBook Pro Can't Connect To My Home Network?
Jun 13, 2010Had my MacBook Pro for a little a month now, and I love it. The problem I am faced with now is that I can't connect to my home network. My iMac is able to connect perfectly, but whenever I try to connect with my MBP, it won't connect, or will assign it's own IP and then states "You will not be able to connect to the internet." It's quiet annoying when I can't use my laptop to connect to the internet, what I am faced to do right now is take my iMac and bluetooth tether it to my MBP. This is fine if I'm in the same room, but it won't work when I'm upstairs. Does anyone know what's wrong? Should I contact my Apple store?

Dec 10, 2010My MacBook, circa 2007, refuses to connect to my home WiFi network, despite having added my MAC address, being WPA encrypted, updated firmware and the like. I haven't had a problem in the last year, until I started taking my laptop to work. It connects to my work wifi network, WPA encryption, and every other network. I have no idea why it wont connect at home. I'm running snow leopard, other macs and PCs at home can connect... It seems I'm missing some odd quirk, I've seen a few threads of similar complaints, but no working resolution. Any ideas? I've wiped out Safari, cleaned all network settings, and it all started once my use shifted predominantly from home to work. Hmpf.

MacBook Pro :: Its Shutting Off The Home Wireless Network?
Mar 31, 2012I've been reading through some of the other MBP wi-fi issues but couldn't find anyone discussing what I'm dealing with so I wanted to put this out there. Â
I got a MBP earlier this week and, it seems like after powering down or shutting the MBP and reopening it, my wi-fi network at home shuts down or isn't recognized. When this happens, I have to unplug my airport extreme and turn the internet on and off on my cable router so the wi-fi signal can be recognized on my wireless devices. It's not just the MBP (running Lion 10.7.3) that can't find the wi-fi when this happens; my MacBook (running OSX 10.5.8), my TV with wi-fi and my wife's iPhone lose their signals also. The airport extreme and my cable router still are showing that they're running when this happens (green light on airport).Â
It only seems to happen when the MBP has been powered down or closed. Not sure if it has something to do with the airport extreme router that's in the MBP. It doesn't seem that anything is actually turning off the airport extreme but none of the devices can recognize the wi-fi signal after this happens. Turning off and on the airport from either of the computers doesn't seem to do anything. It requires a reboot to the airport.Â

When I try to connect to a remote server over SSH from my home network, I get this error:Â

I can't connect to any servers on port 22. Other networking services (like HTTP) are working fine. Also, I can connect to the SSH servers on port 22 from other networks using this same machine.Â
I suspect it's a problem with my Airport configuration. What should I do?

Jan 14, 2008I have a Netgear wireless router that is about 4 years old and has the latest firmware installed. Until now, I have had only Windows computers connected wirelessly and it has worked fine. We just got a new Macbook. When I try to connect to our network, it finds the network name but goes nowhere once I have entered the passphrase. Not being familiar with Macbooks I'm not sure what I'm missing. I did see somewhere that older versions of Airport required either a '$' preceeding the password or that the password should be enclosed with "". None of these things helped. What am I missing?
By the way, according to the Netgear docs, this router should work with Macs.
MacBook Air :: AirPort Does Not Automatically Connect To Home Network
Jun 22, 2009I really like my new MacBook Air, but one thing bothers the crap out of me which is that my airport doesn't automatically connect at home. I did nothing to my network out of the box and connect via WPA2 settings. My wife's late 2008 MacBook always connects to our home network (which is an Apple Extreme N router). Even my Dell Mini with OSX connects perfectly every time. What's causing the MacBook Air not to automatically connect and how do I fix it? BTW, I have tried turning off the Airport and turning back on. Also I used "assist me" to reconnect my DHCP settings and clicked to automatically connect me to my network. The only way I can connect is to click down on the wireless icon and actually choose the network.

HP printer is shared, but is connected via USB to a Dell desktop. I have successfully been able to print from my Dell laptop through our home's wireless network. Both the Dell desktop and laptops are on Vista.

I have 3 Hard drives connected to it and I have no problems accessing the files when I am at home on my personal network but what if I am at school or work and I need those files. Jun 27, 2014I have brought my work mac book pro home with me to do some work over the weekend, but I have the issue of usually it's connected to a network in work and now that I've got it home it says "Network Accounts Unavailable". When I try to log in the log in wheel just spins for about a minute then shakes as if it's the wrong password. I know I'm using the right password as I used it little over an hour ago in work. Do I have to be connected to the internet? And if so is there a work around so I can connect to the Wifi without logging in? It's not the administrator account on the mac, and I don't have those details, but it's a real pain not to have it over the weekend.

MacBook Pro :: Repeated WiFi Timeouts With Home Network Connection
Apr 18, 2012All day, I am able to use the internet (via WiFi connection) at the library. But when I get home, I can't connect to my home WiFi connection. This was never an issue before. I have done all of the obvious things (resetting my router, clearing saved connections from my computer and joining a 'new' network, check and installed all updates, etc etc), but nothing seems to work. All the other devices in our house are connected to the WiFi just fine.
I run the diagnostic and I'm only green on WiFi and WiFi settings, with network settings and ISP fluctuating between yellow and red, and internet and server is always red. I have tried DHCP Lease renewel (which usually does the trick when I am getting an invalid IP address (169.xxx.x.x) until I get a valid one (192.xxx.x.x). But now sometimes I'm not even getting an IP at all! All I wanna do is unwind, check/reply to emails just surf the web to decompress after my long days.
(Running Lion 10.7.3; 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo; 4 GB ram (soon to be 8 )
