MacBook Pro :: Keyboard Backlight Not Working After Small Spill
Aug 6, 2010
I was drinking some tea and bumped into the table the mug was sitting on. A couple of drops splashed out and got on my unibody macbook pro's keyboard. I quickly wiped it off and turned off the computer. I let it sit for a while, but I didn't think anything of it because it was only a few drops. I turned it on and it was fine, however the keyboard's backlight is dim on the right side of the keyboard.

I have a mid '09 macbook pro unibody and just managed to spill a coke on the keyboard. I immediately grabbed the closest thing, a throw, and mopped up the coke before grabbing a tshirt and trying to blot the rest. As of the first 5 minutes of the spill, no problems. What should I do? The left control, option, and command key's backlight now has a yellowish tint, I assume from coke.

I spilled coffee patron (which is a syrup-like coffee flavored tequila) on some keys on my macbook 13" last night. I immediately flipped it upside down and wiped it dry. I then wet a cloth to try to save it from stickiness. It was fine but today the space bar, the "b", "command", "option", & "control" keys are very sticky. Also my caps lock, tab and the squiggly dash (that's use to abbreviate the word approximately above the tab key) are not sticky but don't work at all! My caps lock wont even light up! I would like to remove the keys to wipe under it before taking it to apple care. (which will most likely turn me down.)

After a little spill of coke, my keyboard becomes sticky. I bought new one from ebay and replaced it. Everything works fine except keyboard backlit. I tried basic solutions such as SMC reset, check cabling again but not worked.Â
i behaved very politely while disassmbling and assembling but now i start to suspect that kill backlit somehow.Â

Well, after my keyboard backlight going out, and me looking for multiple solutions, I've found multiple solutions on the internet that include deleting the com.apple.iokit.AmbientLightSensor.plist file from the Library file. My issue is, I'm actually missing this file from my Macbook pro, which leads me to believe that this is the main reason that my backlight isn't working. Is there anywhere I can find this file, or any reason why I'm missing this?
Just to add in, I have a corrupt Hard Drive, and plan on fixing it soon. Could that have anything to do with it?

I own a MacBook Pro 5.1 (late 2008) and since a couple of hours my keyboard backlight suddenly turned off and I can't reactivate it anymore. When pressing the corresponding buttons which regulate the intensity of the backlight I get only the backlight icon on screen with a not available button attached to the lower corner. Is anyone familiar with this problem by chance? This happens under both OS X as well as Windows XP.

The backlight for the keyboard on my powerbook G4 isn't working. It worked perfectly a few weeks ago. Now when it is completely dark in the room and I turn the backlight all the way up the keys dont light up. Do the backlights on these keyboards really break?

My Macbook Pro keyboard Backlight is not working properly even in a darkroom.
I need to install a third party software (Lab Tick) to switch on the keyboard light.
I am not able to use F5 and F6 key to adjust the light dimness. I suspect the light sensor is having problem.
However, last night I received an error message, saying that my Mac is having problem, I need to press the Power button to restart the Mac.
After restart, the keyboard backlight is working (without Lab Tick), and I can adjust the light with F5 and F6.
But now, after I made the Macbook sleep and wake up, it's back to abnormal again.

I accidentally spilled some vitamin water on my macbook pro. Lucky, besides the keyboard getting a little bit sticky, there's no problem with my machine. Is there any easy way to clean the keyboard?

I spilled coffee on my macbook about a month ago and put it into a bag of rice for a week to try and get the moisture out.. but it had been turned on for a while after it was spilled, so had already done some damage. Basically, the hard drive seems to be completely in tact: all of my files are still there, unharmed, and the screen works perfectly.Only a few of the keys on the keyboard, however, work... basically just the top row, space bar, and enter keys. Also, the mouse pad stll works to move your finger around on, but every time i click with it it acts as if the CONTROL key is being pressed down, and therefore uses a "right-click" function rather than a normal click! this is ok for opening some things?I sm a broke student and am trying to work out how to fix this with the least money possible.. have seen online that you can buy an entire top case for the mac and replace that (my house mates are fairly computer savvy and would be able to d that for me)... but how do i know if this will fix it? could it be something with the logic board instead? I've notice the bottom arrow on my arrow keys, located on the bottom right corner of the keyboard doesn't have as springy of a bounce as it once did. About 3 days ago I got the impression it kinda felt a bit sticky. Having a baby brother I'm fearing the worst. The performance of my MBP hasn't changed at all, however having only 4 months left allowed to purchase and extend AppleCare I wouldn't want to buy it for no reason. That and I always like to rest assured my Mac is in pristine condition.

I recently spilled a little bit of coffee on the corner of my MacBook. It didn't get past the F key and only was about three rows of keys. Less than 1/8 cup.
I immediately pulled the power plug and turned it off.
I left it to dry for a day upside down and turned it on. Everything seemed fine, except that after a little while the mouse started to right click on its own and when I typed, it was a combination of letters and numbers.

I spilled a bit of milk on my computer this morning and managed to move fast enough to drain most of it. I turned the computer off, and on again, just to make sure that it was running. (I know now I shouldn't have...) I was able to log in, etc. My trackpad was going a bit wonkers, but it's done that before, so I wasn't worried. Turned it off, flipped it over, set it aside.Â
A number of hours later, I turned it on again, and now the keys from A-L (ASDFGHJKL) and T-O (TYUIO) aren't working. I require a password, so now I can't log in. I noticed also that some key types non-stop (in the password box) until I press delete, which stops the typing. I've taken off a number of keys and cleaned them, but even if I press the squishy thing underneath, the keys aforementioned don't type.Â
Can someone tell me what I can do, if anything, manually before I get an external keyboard? (I won't be going into Apple -- not interested in spending a few hundred+ for cleaning/fixing; my warranty's run itself out.)Â
And, as a side question: I'm not sure if my Bluetooth is on. What do I have to do to be able to connect a wireless keyboard? Or do I need to get one with a USB? Or, because I'm logged out, am I completely screwed?

So I spilled a small amount of tea on the left hand side of my MacBook Pro a few weeks ago. I immediately disconnected the power adaptor, forced shut down and placed the laptop level in a warm, dry area for several days to dry out. On boot up everything performed normally, and has done since, except that when I tried to connect my laptop to my TV last week, nothing happened. I use a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adaptor and normal VGA cable to connect to my tv, and have done this many times before with no issues. The laptop normally automatically recognises that an external display is connected and outputs a video signal - an extended display under OSX Snow Lion, or a mirrored display under Windows 7 Ultimate x64 running in Boot Camp - now literally nothing happens, the laptop does not seem to recognise or react to the fact that the display is connected, and no video signal is output.Â
My laptop is covered under AppleCare, but I realise that, as this is almost certainly liquid damage, there is probably little that can be done to have this fixed on my AppleCare. What are my options? I don't wish to pay out of pocket for what could potentially be a costly repair, but if there is a possibility to get the Mini DisplayPort working again I would like to explore it.

I have tried a few thinsgs to try and get it to work including reseating the cables and that has not helped. As the title says, the back light works as i can see the screen getting blacker/greyer. Also the external output works as well. I'm not sure what to do at this point because I can't find information on an inverter board for the LCD, only the LED backlight think this could be an issue with the video card 8600M or is my LCD dead and I need a new one?
On a side note I have taken very good care of this computer, no drops, making sure the HDD is parked before moving, having it in a protective case, etc. The only difference is that I gave this to my sister to use and after a few days it died. (seems everything she gets that's electronic dies these days, meaning I probably shouldn't give her anything that has a circuit board in it....)

I have a Macbook Pro (Newest gen.) and sometimes the keyboard backlight wont turn on. I suspect it to happen when I have had the Macbook on standby, but I don't know for sure if that is what does it.
Then i press the backlight-adjust buttons on the keyboard, this OSD-symbol turns up: http://peecee.dk/uploads/122010/Scre..._big_thumb.png

In regards to a 2010 13" macbook pro's illuminated keyboard.
1.) Is there a way you can make the keyboard's backlight become brighter in low light situations?
2.) Is there a way for the backlit keyboard to turn off in lit rooms and turn on in dark rooms?
For some reason the backlit keyboard becomes dimmer in low light situations. I'm finding it really irritating. I have a feeling this is the way it is suppose to be so that the keyboard doesn't blind you. Any programs to hack the light sensor?

I have tried a SMC reset 3 times, I have tried deleted the plist file and I have tried the finger over the isight lens and nothing is working. Â
The buttons work fine and it increases and decreases on the screen, it is just there is NO LIGHT whatsoever! Â
I don't know what else to do and don't want to send my laptop off to get fixed if it is just a simple thing I can do.Â

I was surfing the web when my keyboard backlight started to fade on and offat somewhat regular intervals. After about a mintue or two of this, the backlight just went off all together. Now, when I press the F5 or F6 key to brighten or dim the keyboard, the keyboard backlight does not respond. The usual screen pop-up that shows how bright or dim the keys are no longer increases or decreases but shows the symbol of O with a slash through (like the no smoking symbol).

My keyboard backlight isn't working... whenever I try to turn it up it gives a circle with a line through it. I have read that there is an ambient light sensor that turns off the keyboard backlight when it is too bright, however that has NEVER happened before and I have used it in direct sunlight and the backlight still obviously works. It's not even bright right now but it won't work. This is very frustrating, there should be no sensor that turns it off it should be the brightness I tell it to be.
