MacBook Pro :: Intermittent Whine / Sound Right Above Power Button

Sep 18, 2008

For a while now, I've been getting a strange whine out of my mbp core duo right above the power button. I don't believe it's the common "whine" others have complained about as I've tried brightening the screen/turning on the camera. Tapping on the case will stop the sound for a bit, but it soon returns. The sound comes and goes, but in incredibly irritating.

I have a sample here. You may need to turn up the volume to hear it. Yesterday I replaced the right side fan, but the sound is back. Now I'm thinking it's the speaker, but don't want to spend more money on parts unless I'm relatively confident of the problem.

Power Mac G5 :: Machine Making Intermittent Clicking Sound

Dec 20, 2007

I have an early 05 PowerMac Dual 2.3 machine that's making some intermittent clicking noises over the last few months. There's no pattern - sometimes it happens every few minutes, sometimes it won't happen for hours. The clicking sound is loud - and is accompanied by, what I can only describe as, a bit of a buzz sound. At first I thought it could be my HDD or superdrive, but I think the click is way too loud. Now the question - is this my power supply getting ready to give? The machine does not fall in the range of the power supply repair program. I'm already in the process of adding a second HDD to clone my main drive just in case.

MacBook :: Hangs With Weird Intermittent Sound

Sep 11, 2009

Ok, this is kind of hard to describe without a recording of it but my MacBook has this frustrating fault where it beachball's without warning and produces a really hard to describe sound every few seconds. The best I can come with to describe it is an "uh-oh" sound from around the keyboard area. It hangs like this for anything from 2-10 mins and will be pretty much unusable in that time.

Power Mac G5 :: Intermittent Racing Fan And Lock-up

Dec 31, 2007

Sometimes when I push the power on button to boot up, the boot is incomplete and fans begin racing. I power off and try again, usually three to five times, each time getting a little further in the boot till finally it is successful. My Apple disk diagnostic detects this logic board error: 2FAN/4/8: Fan for backside. The problem has been around for a year, maybe two, but it is getting worse and worse.

What other things might I do before jumping to the expense of replacing the logic board?

I have run permission repairs, run ONYX maintenance routines, blown out the dust, scanned the surface of my hard drives...

I keep reading and searching for things to try. I'm going to replace the computer battery now. Should I press the SMU reset button?

I've been looking at the long list of read outs in my console and system logs, but don't know how to make sense of it. My system was pretty stable until about a month ago when I tried to update to QT 7.3... at least I think that's what started a host of software problems... including lots of Safari crashes, and problems exporting Final Cut Pro movie files. So I've got what I think are hardware and software issues. But for now I'd like to focus on the hardware problem discribed above with the logic board error. I only mention the other issues in case they might all be related.

Power Mac G5 :: Intermittent System Freezing Around Same Time

Nov 24, 2007

I run a dual 2 GHz G5 PPC (OS 10.4.10) - for the past 4-5 months I've been getting freeze ups for no apparent reason. These nearly always happen around the same time in the evening (around 11 pm) - although not every evening - probably 2/3 times a week. They can happen whether there is any activity on the computer or not. There is never anything on the console log at the time of the freeze up. I'm putting off an archive and install - though I've tried everything else - Disk First aid, Disk Warrior, permissions, fsck, cache cleaning, font checking, Memcheck, re-booting in safe mode, re-applying combo update, resetting the PRAM etc. - I've even tried replacing my secondary hard drive. I've also tried watching the Activity monitor around the problem time - unfortunately this is when it decides not to happen.

The Mac appears to run ok during the day (usually on by 7.30am) One other slightly odd thing is that sometimes at boot up a warning screen will appear and vanish in a 'nanosecond' - I think it could be the device removal warning -though nothing apart from my two internal drives may be connected. I also get this in the start up log 'family specific matching fails' on a number of usb items. Hope someone can help I'm running out of ideas.

PowerPC :: IBook G4 - When I Press Power Button, Power Fan Comes On, But No Picture Shows

Feb 10, 2008

I have a iBook G4 laptop and there seems to be something very wrong with it. It started a few days ago just randomly. I was reading something on the internet and the screen went black on me, but the power was still on (I clicked CAPS LOCK to see if there was power). I then proceeded to push the power button and the power went off. When I pressed the power button again to turn it on, it made that internal noise it always makes and then the fan came on, and wouldn't turn off. There was no picture on the screen at all. Completely dead. But there was power, because when I clicked on the CAPS LOCK, the light came on). I tried pressing on the power button for at least 15 seconds and even went as long as a minute, and the power didn't go off.

Power Mac G5 :: Won't Boot Up Blinking Power Button After Adding Ram

Dec 6, 2007

I added 2 sticks of 512 to my power mac g5 1.6. I had ahard time getting the computer to see the new ram, but finally was able to kinda get it working after zapping the pram. However my computer only saw these 2 sticks as 256, odd. So i attempted to troubleshoot the problem. I tried just installing the new ram, but the computer wouldnt boot. I tried a few different combos with the other 4 sticks i had, but nothing. I put the old memory back in, and still nothing. The power led looks to blink once every five seconds or so. I tried pressing the pmu reset button, but still the same out come. I also tried taking out the battery, nothing.

PowerPC :: Making Power Button Shut Power Mac Off?

Oct 7, 2006

I'm using a B&W Power Mac G3 with 512MB RAM and OS X Tiger for a SMB file server (with 5 users) and a USB printer server. Everything is working good, but I have a problem.

It doesn't have a monitor or keyboard/mouse attached normally (I can configure it via VNC). The problem is that I would like to be able to turn the machine off when it's not needed (like at night sometimes, days when I won't be home, etc.). I would like to just hit the power button and have it turn off, however it puts it to sleep instead.

Normally, sleep would be fine, except on the B&W, the fans still run, just the HDs shut off, so it's still noisy as heck.

Is there a way to make the power button shut it off? If not, any other easy methods of shutting it off you can think of? Via VNC won't cut it, as my dad needs to be able to turn it on (not a problem) or off as well.

Mac Mini :: Restart Message - Hold Power Button / Press Restart Button

Apr 29, 2009

I have just shipped my Mac Mini to its new home and I've had reports that the panic error is appearing on boot up: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart Button." This screen appears on the blue window just after the grey apple screen has disappeared and does not get as far as the desktop at the same point each time. We have tried to reinstall mac OS from the original install disk but holding the "C" Key or the "Option" Key down on restart doesn't boot from disc. Is there a way you can view the Kernel Panic log before you boot into Mac OS so we can try and pin point the source of this problem. I'm wondering if this could have been the result of the shipping that has caused some hardware to come loose.

MacBook :: Turn On It Without Using The Power Button?

Jun 11, 2012

I have a white 2008 model MacBook. Due to some unfortunate tampering with the circuits under the right command key on the built in keyboard, a lot of the keys and the power button are now effectively dead. I'be ordered a replacement top case, but was wondering if I could, in the meanwhile, somehow turn the laptop on. I'd prefer to do this without opening it up, though I could if that's the only way.

I read in another thread, can't find the link now, that disconnecting the battery, connecting mains, then connecting the battery would turn it on, but that doesn't seem to work for me.

MacBook :: Power Button Always Pressed?

Jun 29, 2014

my power button is constantly pressed. While I was using my computer, the screen got black automatically after a few seconds. After I pressed ESC in order to get back to my desktop, after another few seconds, the window asking if I want to shut down / log out / reboot appeared...When I'm trying to boot my Macbook, after a few seconds, it automatically shut down, without warning, as if I was pressing power button for a few seconds to force the shutdown.I can boot if I remain a keyboard's touch pressed during all the booting process, like Maj, or Alt, but as you could imagine, it's not really easy to use a computer with a keyboard's touch constantly pressed....

By the way, I won't go to the Genius bar for a few reasons, first, this Mac is 5 years old, so I'd prefer buy a new laptop instead of paying a few hundred bucks in order to change pieces of this old Macbook, secondly, I don't have an Apple Store near my location.

My 15" early 2008 MacBook Pro won't shut down unless I hold the power button. I have done extensive searches and have done the following and the problem still persists. I have pulled the battery to reset the SMC or whatever it is called. I ran disk utilities and repaired the permissions. I deleted unnecessary files in the preferences folder...... still no go..... in fact it won't load software updates because it gets hung up.... then I have to force quit it by holding the power button..... I am at a loss.

MacBook Pro :: Power Button Not Working After HDD Replacement?

May 22, 2010

Ok. so my MBP was working 2 days ago and I went to Fry's to replace the HD with a 640GB model thinking larger storage - win. Replaced in and the orange ribbon cable got disconnected between the keyboard and the logic board. Went frantic and after a visit to the Apple Genius, they plugged it back and thought i was fine. Nope, and now the unit won't turn on. Plugged it in and got the green light and battery charges, but the MBP won't power on. I made sure the HD was plugged in securely, the orange ribbon connected fine, and the power button cable was secure. The drive worked fine as I did a superduper transfer of the old data to the new drive the night before the crisis and it worked fine.

MacBook Pro :: Will Not Turn On Or Respond To Power Button

Apr 17, 2012

My MacBook pro (15" unibody, non-removable battery) will not turn on. The battery claims to be fully charged. The computer will not respond to the power button in any way. I had turned it on previously by draining the battery completely of any charge (draining power, then pressing and holding down power button for 60 seconds). When this occurred the computer booted up and ran fine. However, when I closed the lid, it turned off immediately, never to return. I'm wondering if this is a problem with the battery, or if it's a problem with the logic board.

MacBook Pro :: Does Not Shutdown Even When Holding Power Button

May 7, 2012

Today I started to watch a video from a news site (probably using flash) and the computer started to slow down very much so I thought firefox had crashed. Then I force quit it and waited about a minute or two hoping the computer would get fast again as usual but it did'nt happen, so I tried to log out and nothing happened and then I tried to shut it down by clicking the power button and clicking in shut down.

Right after that, the computer started to shut down or log off (it was still very slow) and something happened it stopped in the middle of the process and displayed a blue screen (the same colour that appears when you connect another monitor to the mac). Then I thought of using my last resource: holding down the power button until the computer turned off but again, nothing happened.

MacBook Pro :: New SSD Installed - Power Button Not Working

Jun 28, 2012

After 1.5 years of use, my hard drive suddenly failed. This was later confirmed by Apple Genius Bar. So I purchase a new SSD from OWC which was instructed to be compatible with my laptop model (MBP 13" early 2011). It arrived today and I did the installation carefully and successfully. However, after putting the back panel back in place I was unable to power up my laptop.

It was as if the power button is not working. Then I opened up the back panel one more time to realise that every time I click the power button (turn on), the fan started running, this can only be stopped by pressing the power button and held it (turn off). I tried placing my old hard drive and it doesn't work as well. I tried reset the SMC by holding power-shift-option but same result.
