MacBook Pro :: How To Get Rid Of Malware Causing Popups On Chrome
Aug 22, 2014
I think I got infected when downloading a torrent ap--now deleted, but the problem persists. Basically every time I click on anything (even on reputable sites, I get ridiculous popups and ads that should not be there. The internet tells me that my MacBook pro has been infected with malware.

I don't know if anyone can help me with this, but for the past week or so, I've been getting weird popups when going to sites like nytimes.com, macrumors.com, cnet.com, google.com, and other perfectly safe sites that say something along the lines of "This site may harm your computer." And then when I click "Ignore" I get another popup that says are you sure, and I can't get out of the popup, and then I have to quit Safari.
I'm wondering if I have some kind of trojan or something like that. I'll get a screenshot next time it happens.

Lately, every time I open Safari the computer heats up and the fan blows continuously. This doesn't happen for Chrome, so I've had to use Chrome exclusively lately.Â
In Activity Monitor, Safari Networking has an energy impact of 100 and Average Energy Impact of 77, which Safari has an Average Energy Impact of 162. Chrome is at 11.

I'm having trouble with Browsers. I rotate between Safari, Aurora, and Chrome. But all three of them eventually choke of resources and hog the cpu. Sometimes quitting the broswer works but most of the time, I reboot of OS X is needed to clean up the resource logjam. My practice of using a lot of windows and tabs is at least part of it. But if varys on different days.  Thist week began a new bothersome and worrisome behavior that has malware fingerprints. Sometimes when I click on a link on a window that is "normal" size (say 60% height and 60% width of screen), a full screen pops up over everything and something I didn't ask for shows up. There are several cases of what shows up.Â
1. Some times it is a window that advises me to clean up my Mac offering a tool to do that (I've seen this offer all the time but I cannot recall which one it is but it is very common--I think the thing that was offered was Mac Keeper about which I have heard bad things so I avoid it. It appears to have a foot hold on my system). clock the red close button on the window (or Cmd-W) and it disappears and the window it came from reappears and is functional. I can no click the same link I had used before and now it works. Sometimes, but not always, later windows as I navigate do the same thing.Â
2. Today, when I went to URL.../support and clicked on discussions, a full scren window popped up with the URL.....or some other thing - I've only captured the two URLs. If I close that popped up window

I have a macbook air that I just bought last year and I think I have malware. I have popups whenever I click on ANYTHING in any browser that I have tried. The most common popup is this mackeeper page. I've tried to follow to uninstall instructions but I can't even find that I have ever installed it in my applications or downloads or anywhere. I have tried to delete almost everything on my laptop and everything I have ever downloaded.

I seem to have a bit of an issue on my MacBook Pro with pop-ups. I use Google Chrome and I thought this was a Chrome issue. I uninstalled the program and re-installed it, but when I used Safari to re-install, I had pop-ups come up on Safari, so it isn't a Chrome issue.Â
I am unsure if this is a Java plug-in issue or what, but I'm getting pop-ups everywhere and I do work quite a lot on my MacBook. I keep getting pop-ups such as MacKeeper, Purifier, EuroMillionaire, etc. I noticed I had MacKeeper and removed it. I will admit, I was working rapidly on Friday afternoon and I think I may have disabled Java or something. I am not sure how to go to the settings and adjust this. Â
How I can erase this. I've had this MacBook since late 2008 and haven't had this issue. I am on OS X 10.9.5 if that matters.

I have owned and worked on Apple computers for many years and never had any issues with any type of viruses or pop-ups and now I do. I cannot think of anything I did but now anytime I open a new Tab or do something on a web page new tabs immediately open.URL....Also, when I open other sites like Snapfish I get these pop-ups on the top and bottom of the website.Â

My cursor is poping up with inappropriate dialog boxes containing things like Facebook, Groupon, Apple computer, Google and other company names, even some in chinese characters. Behaves the same as other popups when you linger over over an active point on a page - eg. 'insert table' and dissappears after a few seconds. Doesn't seem malicious but is extremely annoying and perplexing.
Thought I had a virus and installed Norton which found and removed a Trojon.Sasfis virus which I thought had fixed the problem but it has returned.

I have recently discovered that on safari, on certain websites such as bbc.co.uk, there are words that are highlighted in green and underlined. Everytime i click on a 'green word' it takes me to some kind of pop-up style website that looks pretty dodgy. Also it happens on google chrome. My computer is running a tad slower, but nothing out of the ordinary. I fear something may have downloaded by accident via the internet.

When I plug an externally powered device (printer, external HD etc.) into my MBP via USB, there are small sparks around the plug and the plugged in speaker makes sounds. I think that this also caused my external HD to die.

Twice recently, when I empty the Trash on my mid-2010 MacBook Pro with OS X Lion (current update), the Trash empties but the CPU goes to 100% utilization, the fans come on high, the CPU temperature as measured by an app exceeds 200 degrees Fahrenheit, and of course any commands produce a long beachball. The computer will only shut down by force via the power button.
Is it harmful for the CPU to max-out like this? The power-on self-test on startup reported "passed" so there doesn't appear to be any damage but I am not sure how much these tests really test. The Apple Hardware Test will not run in Lion. I ran one with my old Snow Leopard startup disk and it reported pass but recorded the test date as in the year 4012.

I accidentally clicked on a link in an email from a friend and was taken to a website which is obviously a scam. "Work from Home..." I have tried lots of things to get rid of it but it won't go away and won't let me do anything else with Safari. Do I have malware? How do I get rid of it?

Recently I purchased 8GB of G Skill ram from newegg for $90. After installing it in my computer, i thought everything was working fine until I noticed apps crashing more frequently. Is it possible that the ram is causing this to happen? Also, my computer kernel panicked once since installation.

I had been moving files back and forth between my WD mybook USB External HD when I pulled it from the imac without ejecting and plugged it into my air. The Air's screen dimmed and this popup came up. Now everytime I plug something in to my USB port, i.e. USB jump drive, External HD, even my External Air DVD drive, the same thing happens, screen dims and this message pops up. THe only item that it has not frozen up on is my Iphone, that connected fine without crashing.
