I recently downloaded the Switch App, after finding that I don't need it anymore I decided to uninstall it but wont uninstall, tried doing what apple tutorial still its there.
The default behaviour of Macs seems to be to wake up from sleep whenever a USB device is disconnected or switched off. This is not very helpful for how I like to operate. I want to keep most of my files on an external USB drive without power-down feature so that I have fast access to them at the click of a mouse button (don't want to wait for the drive to spin up as can happen frequently if your drive has the power-down feature). However, I like to sleep my Mac several times a day, and when doing so would like to switch off the external USB HD until I get back. So you see the annoyance, but perhaps there is a way to disable this wakeup feature of Leopard. I'd be happy to learn it from you!
If I select from the menu bar another available wireless network (one without a password for example) and then switch back to my own wi-fi network, am I still safe?
Did the fact that I connected to another network present any risks?
I did not send any private info during that time, any risks of getting hacked?
Sometimes restarting is not enough: you need to power off your Mac, wait for a little, and power it on again. It could be a script which act like the "schedule" program in system preferences: it would switch off the Mac immediately, the add 1 minute to the current time and switch it on again.
I just removed over 1000 cookies. They were bogging the system down to the point of having some pages freeze. I then closed Safari. I launched Safari again a few minutes later and all the cookies were back, even though the only site I went to was the Apple open page.
I've just noticed that in my Finder window sidebar, under "Shared", I have a character called Thomson listed. I don't know any Thomson and I bought the machine, an MBA, brand new. However, I did have an engineer instal the machine in my apartment and can only assume he's the mysterious Thomson. Anyway, whoever he/she is, I don't want him/her on my machine as Shared & "connected as guest". The point is, I cannot find a way to delete Thomson!! Can anyone help? I've tried System Preferences>Security and Accounts and there's no trace of Thomson there. Right clicking on Thomson in the sidebar of Finder only gives me the option to Open and Get Info. Most annoying, this. There MUST be a way to delete a Sharing but totally unwanted guest....
I just got a new Macbook Pro and f5 and f6 are used for the keyboard backlight. I don't need f6 but I'd like f5 to refresh the browsers. In preferences I can switch the f keys to be the default, but I just want this for f5. Does someone know how to do this?
I currently use an iMac (20" late 2006 model) as my main computer, but for my next I am seriously considering a MacBook Air. I bought my iMac with the intention of using all of it's power (I got the 2.33Ghz with 256mb X1600), but the only time I really tap into the processor is when I encode video, which I do rarely anymore, and when I play games, which I never do anymore since I have a PS3 for that. Now, all I really do is websurf, listen to music, use Garageband, and other basic stuff.
i know you've already tackled this a thousand times, but, having read those thousand threads, i'm still not sure which of these i should go for. you all seem generous with your opinions, so i'll ask again.i need to replace my 4 year old dell 700m (12.1", 1.6ghz, 512mb ram, tiny 24gb HD) as it has become painfully slow and things are beginning to stop working. i've very much enjoyed its portability (it's small and weighs just over 4 pounds) which is why the MBA has caught my eye. my concern, is that i've heard all these things about it being underpowered - but underpowered for what? the lure of the MBP, of course, is that it's a lot more power for its moderate increase in bulk and weight.
I've been following this forum for over 2 months now and I'm proud to say that it helped me to finally make the decision to buy a mac. I've always been an iPod-fanatic but a completely new OS seemed like a very drastic change. I recently moved houses and now I live about 200 metres from an apple store, so I guess it was just a matter of time before I caved in .Now that I've been using my new laptop for about a week I can honestly say that I've never enjoyed using a computer as much as I do now. I'm already getting frustrated when using my PC (a Dell Inspiron 1525) to transfer files because it doesn't function as fluently as my mac, I believe that this is a good sign . What I like the most about my new machine are the multi-touch gestures on the trackpad and the very good battery life (I can easily watch over 3.5 hours of video with Airport turned off and low light conditions. Coming from barely 1h15 of word processing on my Dell, I can say that I'm quite impressed). I'm also a lot more productive on this computer than I ever was on any other laptop, I don't know what it is but i'm guessing it has something to do with the fullscreen option in Pages '09. Also, the backlit keyboard is incredibly useful when instant messaging in my room in the middle of the night without my parents knowing, or typing in dark lecture halls.
I just ordered my new MacBook Pro. I will transfer my current hard disk in my old MacBook Pro (Unibody, 17") to my new MacBook Pro (Unibody, 13"). Will the current OS X installation and the programs "just work" given the change in hardware (17" unibody to 13" unibody), or should I expect any problems?
How do I switch the graphics cards in my 15" MBP? Its the current highest end 15" and is there just a application or what. It has the dual graphics cards.
So, is it not possible to change the resolution of the anti-glare screen to a smaller one? Or why do people complain about the high resolution all the time... "I want the anti-glare design but I can't read text that small..."
I just installed windows on my macbook Pro, but i could only install it on the. Boot camp driver. Cuz thats the only one that would format to NTFS. Now that i installed windows, i cannot switch back to osx. If i didnt delete or completely remove osx, will someone please tell me how i can get back to osx. Yes, i tried to f6 it and see if i can switch back but osx isnt even listed on there. So my question again, did i completely remove osx?
I'm going to buy my friends 17" MBP off him soon. It as an antiglare display, I was wondering if Apple could replace it with a glossy display (I like the way the black border looks with the keys lol)? If they can, does it cost anything (has 3 year AppleCare)?
Since Yosemite I have the following problem with my wi-fi: every time my MacBook Air is not in use i can't connect to my wi-fi and have to switch off and then on again to be able to connect. Never had this problem before and the various iPhones in the household work perfectly well with wi-fi.
Info: MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2013), iOS 8.1.1, upgraded to Yosemite
after starting with power button, I hear apple thud and apple sign comes on, and can hear machine is on, but no display. What has occurred and how do I get display to work as normal?
Has anybody gone from glossy to AG and found anything that irritates them about the AG screen?Does it seem weaker without the glass enforcement?Does dust collect around the edges of the screen since it isnt end to end? What about cleaning it?
Is there any way for me to keep my data without using an external hard drive when switching to a bigger hard drive, I just got a macbook and I wanted to upgrade from the 120gb.
I didn't notice a thread like this and since it seemed like this was one of the only threads that has not popped up yet, i figured i would start one. I have a old Powerbook G4 that I love, but it is dying and I need a replacement. This thread is for the people that, out of necessity and/or practicality, might just make the switch from Apple to another vendor because:1. Why spend money on old technology when there are so many companies offering laptops with way better specs for the same if not a cheaper pricetag.2. There is no set date as to when this update will come out, speculation yes, but nothing is locked in. If you are one of these people, which computers are you considering? This is not a Apple hating thread, it is just a thread to discuss alternatives to people that cannot wait any longer.
