My Macintosh Hd is 187GB. It says used amount to be 174 GB. However when I add up all the componenets users 124.35GB+Library 8.91 GB+Applications 9.41GB+ System 5.36 GB= 148GB Approx What happened to the other 26 GB.

I have a Mac mini with a 55 G internal hard drive with a 750 G One Touch Maxtor drive (actually just 698 G) attached via firewire. Later this month I'll be upgrading from Tiger to Leopard, and I'm assuming a clean install makes most sense. I'd like to partition the Maxtor drive to provide general storage as well as Time Machine backups. Although it's not vitally important, I could envision having a partition to handle Windows. Should I create three partitions: one for approx 55 G to handle the current contents of my internal drive for the upgrade; one for approx ?? G to handle potential Windows; and the remaining space to handle Time Machine.
- How large should a Windows partition be? There are some apps that would be useful to have, but highly unlikely it will be an important part of my routine. Should I be stingy? Can I get a Windows install in about 10 G? 20 G?
- Can I partition the Maxtor while it has data? Currently there is about 25 G of files. Many are expendable.
- Disk Utility seems to default to PPC settings, though the mini has an Intel processor. I'll want a GUID Partition Table for at least one partition, correct?
- Does it make sense to install Leopard on an external partition in case the internal drive ever fails? Or is that a waste of space for now? (One assumes I'd be able to rescue the machine via the install disks.)
- I suppose everyone's experience with Time Machine is different based on how they use their computers, but is there a rough guideline on how much space to devote to Time Machine?
My home folder shows a file size of 912 GB, yet the consumed space on my 1TB hard drive only shows 798 GB used. How can that be, given that the home folder is stored on the hard drive (HD)? I discovered the discrepancy when Time Machine wouldn't make backups anymore ... it said there wasn't enough space to even make an initial backup. When tracked individually, the home folder along with the other folders on my HD show a combined size that totally fills up my drive, yet when I checked the space on my HD it says there's approximately 200 GB free. I've run checks (Disk Utility) on both the HD and the external backup drive and they both checkout OK. I excluded almost all of my files from the Time Machine preferences, then it was able to make a succesful backup. Does that mean that the file sizes reported by Time Machine are correct (the drives completely full) and that there's something wrong with my internal HD?

why the iphoto library file size in the finder appears to be a certain size, while iphoto itself reports a very different size. Is there any way to recover any disk space or reconcile the numbers here? Please see the attachments below, it may make a bit more sense that way. I would like to recover the disk space and if it really is a 16gb difference somewhere.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI try to put my iMac (Lion) in the sleeping mode. The screen becomes black but the hard disk doesn't stop. I don't see any live process in the activity monitor. This problem was not there before and I have no idea to correct it.

My Tiger volume gets stuck when starting up, it doesn't get further then the grey screen with the Apple logo. The clock with stripes keeps working but it doesn't get me to the blue screen.
For compatibility reasons concerning different softwares i use (Protools, Reason etc...) i keep changing the internal HD's for years now, thus changing the OS's (10.3.9, 10.4.11 etc). Never caused any problem.
When i boot from another 'master' volume (f.e. 10.3.9) OR from the OSX install CD, putting the Tiger volume as 'slave', in order to verify its disk permissions or the disk itself to be able to repair them, it's 'invisible', not 'seen' by the other volume.
So no 'verify disk permissions' nor Combo Update possible, maybe those things could solve my problem.
My cables are working perfectly: making the exact same connections and jumper settings with all my other volumes, is no problem at all: every volume is correctly seen by the others.
Also, there is no USB or external firewire device connected while trying to start up.
Remark: never had any problem with this Tiger volume, starting problem only occured yesterday AFTER installing Toast Titanium (which worked normally), shutting down and trying to start up again.
Nevertheless, some minor problems occured beforehand these last days: some apps didn't work anymore, like Safari, itunes, installer and UnrarX. But i don't know if it's linked.
Odd stufff, I have a 500 gig Lacie ext HD that my user uses on her Vista machine...
I am setting up a replacement for the Vi$ta machine, which is a 24 inch imac.
I plugged in the ext HD and nothing happened after I powered on the ext HD.
I checked disk utility and it showed up but as a 2TB size ext HD...
I unplugged the Lacie and plugged it back in and all the info showed up correctly.
But ALL the buttons under "First Aid" are greyed out so I cant verify permissions, disk, or repair disk or permissions.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy new 2010 hexacore Mac will have 24G memory, an OWC Extreme Pro 120G SSD (positioned in the lower optical bay) and four 2TB WD RE4 drives. I'll use my old Synology 209 NAS (two 1TB WD Green Raid 1 drives) for TM backups over 1000Mbps Ethernet. Yes, I'll need to upgrade to a larger NAS very soon. This will be my first Mac Pro (have MBPs and iMac) and will be used for web design and development (mostly Adobe CS5 products).
The SSD will be used for boot and application files. I plan to use Disk Utility to create a 1+0 Raid array for data files. For a Scratch disk, should I:
1) create a partition on the 1+0 Raid Array for Scratch
2) partition a chunk of the SSD for Scratch
3) attach a spare external 2.5" WD drive via Firewire 800 for Scratch
Based on my reading, it seems that option 1 makes the most sense but I'm not entirely sure if you can partition a 1+0 array with Disk Utility. I'm pretty sure option 3 is quite silly but wanted to toss out the idea. Lastly, are there any generic recommendations on scratch volume sizing?
I'm new to mac, have been using mine for only three months now, but couldn't help noticing a strange thing. When I go to Disk Utility or cmd+i on a selected partition, the size reported by OSX is incorrect. E.g. I have a 250GB disk, so I'm used to seeing 232GB as usable disk space, which is a totally normal thing. However, OSX tells me that my disk is actually 250GB. More advanced partition utilities (currently I'm using iPartition but suggestions are welcome) report the disk size correctly. So I began to doubt whether folder sizes are reported correctly or "scaled up" to match the size of the disk?
E.g. if I was an ignorant consumer and tried to put 250GB worth of data on the disk, it wouldn't fit as there is not enough physical capacity to accommodate it, is that right?
Is it the normal behaviour or I screwed something up in the system?
I'm must be hitting some strange key combination / trackpad gesture (I just got a macbook pro) and my font size in safari keeps randomly increasing. This happens on the desktop with the icons as well.

I've download a Seagate Diagnostics programme to check whether my external Seagate FreeAgent Desk is working properly or not. However, when I run the programme, it indicates that cannot find the disk.
View -1 Replies View RelatedI have a Seagate 1 TB Backup Plus Drive which was working perfectly fine until I plugged it into a USB hub. It detected it while in the hub and I was able to get files off of it, but when I ejected it from the hub and put it back into the USB slot on the computer it was not detected by finder. It shows up in the disk utility and I clicked verify and repair and it says:
Verify and Repair volume “Seagate Backup Plus Drive”
Checking file system
Volume repair complete.
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
Is there any way to get this to work properly again? Or if not is there a way for me to recover my files on the external hard drive?

Next year when snow leopard will be released I was thinking to upgrade my poor 60gb hard disk to something more probably to a 320 one, but I got one problem I lost my recovery disk and actually I don't really need it as you know Tiger is very stable.

I saw this 500gb barracuda drive at bestbuy for $80 running at 7200 rpm and 16mb cache buffer. so it sounds good. First off, I am very O.C.D when it comes to my electronics and I constantly worry about my stuff. Over the past month, I have been checking SMART status and benchmarking my hard drive at least once a day. I'm a little worried that my hard drive is dying... Yea, I'm crazy...Regardless of the above, I would like some answers to a few questions..First, how durable are the unibody lower case screws? Do they strip easily? If I purchase the correct size screw driver (phillips #00), what are my risks of damaging the screws, or possibly wearing them out prematurely?Second, how difficult is it to realign the lower case and not cause a "wobble." I have read some people incorrectly screwing in the bottom case and basically bending the lower case, causing the machine to wobble on a flat surface.After reading my manual, Apple clearly indicates that users are permitted to service the hard drive. I'm technologically savvy but my only worries are damaging my $2500 machine...

When I visit websites, I constantly have to hit the zoom in button in the Safari menu bar. If I don't do this, there are words that overlap on the page. Is there a way I could make Safari remember my zoom options? I have 18 point selected under the Advanced section of Safari System Preferences. I started having problems with Yosemite and lion (installed in the same hard drive, different partitions) so i erase all and instal mavericks, the macbook is late 2009 stock but i don't have startup disk, when i install mavericks it tells me that wont boot and it went an error trying to install, so i am able to boot with the alt key but my mac doesn't recognize de boot disk, when i try to select the startup disk on preferences it tells me: "You can’t change the startup disk to the selected disk. The bless tool was unable to set the current boot disk.", what i can do, i can boot with the alt key but it doesn't boot automatically.

Although when I go into bootcamp it shows there is still 20gb assigned to windows but I screwed it up as I tried to extend the amount of GB I allowed to windows without reinstalling it. View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter updating to 10.7.3 I have noticed that Disk Utility no longer opens. It pops up into the utility bar for a few seconds, bobs up and down a couple of times, then disappears. The next time I click on Disk Utility I don't even get that much of a response. It just doesn't open. No error report, no pop ups saying that it can't be opened - Nada. I can't use disk utility AT ALL anymore. I've tried Zapping my PRAM, but that's about it.
The other thing I've noticed is that any time I put something into the Trash Bin it automatically tells me that it will delete the item - it doesn't sit in the trash bin like it used to until you manually delete it. The only time I can get it to behave normally is when I am using an external drive and I put something from the external drive into the trash bin.
