How do I get the disk drive to stop making the noise when I open my mac? Its like the whirring click sound.
I am a novice Mac user. I think I was using Mountain Lion (i paid for it - about £20) but upgraded to Mavericks last year when prompted by my software update. I now understand from reading various online posts that this means I am now stuck with it. At first I had lots of problems with PDF files crashing but this has been fixed. Today I am not having a nightmare trying to use Finder. Any time I click on a file or folder the colour wheel spins for about 10-20 seconds. This happens for every command I make. I just tried to access my files directly from the desktop and the same thing happened. I am not sure what to do and I dont want to end up deleting something important!

I recently added a NAS with four main partitions (recognizes them as drives). Now, when ever I start up my mac, finder opens four panes, one for each drive. Is there any way I can prevent finder from automatically opening?

I recently upgraded my stock HDD to a SSD and moved the HDD into the optibay. I was hoping that using the command pmset -a disksleep 1 would mean the 5400rpm drive would go to sleep after 1 minute of inactivity and I would get nice SSD silence It usually does but something is making it spin up again all the time. I am hardly running anything on my MBP.
View 5 Replies View Relatedi recently got a 13" mbp, upgraded to a WD scorpio blue 500gb and 4gb crucial RAM. the annoying thing is that the WD HDD seems to always be spinning (randomly at different rates, never silent).
i feel that this is not only draining the battery, but it is also slightly obnoxious. is there any way to get the thing to stop spinning, or is that just what it does. I feel as though my past macbooks havent had this problem.
Any ideas as to why my right fan is spinning at -1? This MacBook Pro is only a month old so hopefully there isn't something wrong with it.

This is the second time I installed a new toshiba 1tb hdd on my macbook pro unibody and after some use I get the spinning rainbow and lots of hanging and do some checks with drive genius and it told me again I had bad blocks on the HDD. When I first installed I tried checking for bad sectors and nothing appeared but now that I used the laptop they appeared.
Now tell me what I am doing wrong because this is the second time it happens with the same brand ,model and capacity of HDD.
1. I format the drive to mac
2. Install mac on the hdd running with an external hdd enclosure
3. Restore my data with carbon copy cloner to the new drive
4. Install on the Macbook physically
5. Run checks for verification of smart disc and permissions fixes.
6. Update OS if needed
I can barely type this post or do anything on my mac book pro without a spinning wheel popping up. Any help would be appreciated. I have cleared Pram, ran disk utility fix permissions.
View 8 Replies View RelatedRight, so i got my 13" MBP yesterday and downloaded Fan Control, when i opened it, it showed me that only the left fan was spinning and that the right fan was spinning at -1RPM (i'm taking that as meaning that its not spinning rather that its spinning backwards). Upon seeing this, i ran the Apple Hardware Test that comes on the OS install disks, i ran the short test and nothing was found, so i ran the more in depth test. Seeing that it was going to take a while i went for a shower, as i came back upstair i was greeted by the smell of burning! I realised it was coming from my Macbook Pro and did a hard shut down to try to prevent any/anymore damage. (It was also very hot). I dont want a broken laptop the day after recieving it!
View 9 Replies View RelatedThe left fan in my 15 inch 2.16Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo died, so I bought a replacement and fitted it myself. Before I put everything back together, I turned it on and checked the fan started spinning, and it did.
Even now, when I turn it on I can hear the replacement fan spinning, so it's definitely working.
Last night, whilst watching a film, the bottom of the macbook got REALLY hot, too hot to even touch, then it kernel panicked and turned off. So I installed iStat and it shows the left fan as running at 0rpm, even though I can hear it running and feel a slight blow. It just doesn't seem to be winding up when the mac gets too hot like the right hand fan does?
I just got my MBP 2.66 i7, 500HD 7200RPM I can hear the HD spinning, is this normal, I didn't have this for my old macbook

I have an 80GB Intel X-25 SSD in the main hard drive slot, and a 500 GB Seagate Momentus XT in the Optibay. The OS and applications are installed on the SSD in the main slot, while my home folder and some Pro Tools session files are located on the Momentus XT connected via Optibay in the optical drive slot.
I have a brand new macbook pro, and whenever I use itunes, iphoto or firefox. I get the spinning "wheel of doom" about every ten minutes. It only lasts about 30 seconds, but happens even when I only have one application open.

I bought a new charger and my dad managed to fix it. (after i was told by a tech expert at a dodgy asian store the main processer had to be replaced) The only issue im having are. The spinny wheel apears in almost all tasks, internet , browsing flies , clicking top tab.
It only appears for about 30 seconds then goes away, sometimes freezing completely, It seems to happen less when the computer is stationary but still will happen quite often even just typing text. Logic Pro after reinstalling refuses to Open. Music sometimes freezes skips for 5-10 seconds.
I did some research and try a few things its not the CPU usage cause i been checking using that program that checks. Is there a way i can check what part is failing through software or maybe do a general clean up? since it was reformated.
Do i need to get a new computer or just a replacement part if i eliminate all other issues? Or could it be the start up drive?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI want to keep the optical drive constantly spinning. I am running music for a dance recital, and all their music is on CDs and I would prefer not to rip it in. My problem is that for the rehearsals, every time they rehearse a new song, I have to wait minimum 10 seconds for the drive to spin up and load the song. Is there any way I can keep the drive spinning until im done with it? Or a way to temporarily load the CD into RAM?

I just bought a 13 inch macbook pro about 2 days after the keynote, and it came in on the 15th. I opened it up and it worked pretty good. I noticed I saw the spinning pinwheel a little more than I think I should. My cousin's macbook did it less frequently than my new macbook pro. It was happening when I opened iTunes or Safari. So a few days ago I opened up iTunes and I saw the pinwheel, but then it kept going, and going, and itunes froze up and crashed. After that it has happened several times. The same with safari and iMovie. I am sort of angry because I spent a good amount of money on this and I don't think it should be happening. I can live with it, but I certainly hope this isn't the norm! I switched to mac so things would be easier.
View 7 Replies View RelatedFor the last couple of days my fans have been going crazy, spinning at 6200RPM non stop. I installed fan control last month but the issues just started. When I open up fan control it says my fan should be spinning at 4000RPM. I had smcFanControl installed before and its still installed. My bluetooth module over heated yesterday so I used SMC to rev up the fans. I don't know if that is the issue because it isn't running now. I'll try uninstalling that now.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI got my Macbook Air about 3 weeks ago and love it. However after the first 2 weeks, one day I turned it on and it was making a loud grating, spinning noise. The noise could be equated to if you try to play a CD but it hasn't been secured in the CD player fully so its banging around. But of course I have no disc drive...
So I stopped using it, tried turning it off and on again a couple of times over the next few days to no avail. I'm about to go back and demand a new one, but yesterday I turn it on and it's suddenly stopped making the noise.
My question is, is this problem likely to return, and is it due to a defective laptop? Should I see about exchanging it while it's still brand new or just wait and see if it happens again?
All of a sudden I was restarting my Air and now, it just has the spinning wheel for a few seconds and then goes blank and shuts down. I have tried everything the 'guide trouble shoots' but nothing has worked. Even was able to test the hard drive and it came back with no trouble. I tried to 'return to factory setting' but no luck and also tried resetting the Parameter RAM.

I can actually dampen the sound from the outside by covering the palm rest with my palm and pressing down. But I would like to get rid of the sound without doing this.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI put in a samsung 500gb drive, and since yesterday this one is also doing strange. I was browsing the internet and it started launching itunes and going really slow although i wasn't doing anything, then it showed a force quit window telling me there was not enough memory on the startup disk for applications, althoug i still have roughly 340gb of free space. I just thought of restarting it maybe that solved the problem. But no, since then it doesn't startup in mac os x, bootcamp works fine with windows 7 installed. But starting snow leopard just gives me a grey screen like the safe boot screen with the progress bar and the spinning wheel. the progress bar dissapears after a while and the wheel etternaly spins.
Tried single user mode and fsck -fy but it only gives me some dislocations, it gets till the repairing Tree and then says that the volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired. Also tried to reset Pram but that neither. starting up with a bootable usb with the mac os x install dvd on it gives me the prohibitory sign after 2 minutes. I still have to try with my original disc, but that one is at home and I'm not gonna be there till next month.
I'm prepping my Macbook Pro for daily usage now and moving around all my documents, etc.What's the normal fan speed that you guys usually use during your normal daily usages and what temperature do you expect when you are using it everyday?Would the fan wear out if I set it to 3500RPM indefinitely when I use it using SMC Fan Control?
