MacBook Pro :: Fan Not Running Under Bootcamp?
Jul 20, 2009
im on a macbook pro with nvidia 9400 / 9600 gt graphics. i installed windows xp sp2 just to see how games perform under the 9600 gt. at first everything was fine, well, the temps went up to gpu 80C and cpus up to 60C but i think thats ok (right?). but then, all of a sudden, the fans stopped working. it all started that when i booted up windows the screen first was like dimmed and lit up very late. then, when i started a game, the fan wouldnt spin and temps went crazy gpu 100C and cpus 70C so i shut down. since then under windows there is no more fan activity. is this problem known?

Do I have to install a Windows 7/RC build on Bootcamp before I can use it with Parallels? Or if I already have it on bootcamp, I have to install it all over again with Parallels? And I was thinking of only having RC as my secondary OS until my Windows 7 disc comes. When that happens, do I just delete all my RC stuff from bootcamp to make room for Windows 7? I'd also lose all my documents and whatnot right since I can't upgrade to Windows 7 from an RC.

Ok so I've got a MBP bought back in november, with Mac OS X Leopard. My problem is, when running windows, Bootcamp 2.0, no mic will be recognised. Neither the built-in, nor any one you connect will work. Doesn't matter if it's usb or jack, it won't work (even though it's recognised).
I'm working with Realtek HD audio drivers, as I didn't even have sound after installing Bootcamp.

I figured I found the perfect place to talk about my mac book pro. I have a mac Book Pro 15 inch 2 years old. I decided to use boot camp for the first time the other day and run windows vista. I noticed that though it ran perfect on here I felt that something wasn't right with the dual boot OS. I decided to erase and bring my harddrive back to normal. After I did that I feel like my Mac runs slow. I was thinking if it doesn't get better I might have to do a clean install.

I bought my first Mac, a C2D MBP 13". I really love the machine. But I'm experiencing this particular issue of having high cpu load of up to 80% while on W7 Professional bootcamp even though I'm not running any graphic intensive programs.
Specs: 2.4Ghz MBP 13" (The recently refreshed model)
Windows 7 Professional 32bit (MSDNA Edition)
Upon successful installation of W7, I inserted the OS X disc inside and the bootcamp drivers installed successfully. So I'm quite sure the drivers are okay. Being a DotA lover, I installed WC3 on my bootcamp. However, I realise that whenenver I'm on windows mode, the machine is very laggy. I even have problem opening a browser when I alt tab out from WC3. Is this normal? Even when idle, the cpu load on the processor jumps from 1% to 47% randomly. Just fluctuates randomly. I'm quite sure my Windows Security Essentials is not doing any scan btw.

I just installed bootcamp on my machine. I didn't think I would need to run both osx and xp at the same time but parallels is looking good to me right now. Since I already installed xp via boot camp, can I just download parallels from their site and be able to run both OS's at the same time, I could not find this information on their site.

I recently used Boot Camp to create and install a Windows 7 partition on my MacPro. Windows runs fine except that I'm not getting any sound. This must be some kind of driver issue but I don't know where to turn.
I know this must be addressed here somewhere but I did a search and couldn't find a thread on it so I apologize in advance if this is a common question.

So my kids wanted me to set up their computer with boot camp and Windows so that they could play games. We have XP service pack 2 installed. So far, Empire earth - wont run. NAscar Racing 20003 wont run. I want to try Sims 2 but is there something missing that these games are needing?

After booting to windows xp pro(sp2) via bootcamp the resolution setting slide bar on Nvidia control panel lets me adjust to a higher rez, but does not change the resolution physically at all. I do get the windows "keep this setting" pop up..I choose yes to humor it, but nothing changed in the first place.Other than this glitch, windows works fine. I can set the resolution to 1900 x 1200 for gaming inside the game's application but this huge 640 x 480 is hard to deal with on my 2.93GHz 17" unibody macbook pro display.

I download vista or windows 7 when it comes out, and I install it with bootcamp in my new imac 24". Will I be able to install and run non mac games? Like normal pc games and have then run just in bootcamp? Thats really my only motivation for using windows and if so how much hdd space would vista or windows 7 take up on my comp?

After loads of headwork I may have a perfect running Windows 7 on my MacBook Pro. I was running XP but decided for a change, installed 7 but had the issues with sound, keyboard, bluetooth etc etc tried a few things but no joy. So went to Vista instead, things worked fine but didn't partition enough space so another reinstall was needed, then came the brainwave if everything is running smoothly in Vista surely if I upgrade to 7 it should still work, ok I was a little wrong 90% of it did.
I even had sound, bluetooth issue was resolved just needed to uncheck 'allow computer to control sleep thing' just needed to sort out the keyboard backlight, eject and fn keys. So in my wisdom I reinstalled bootcamp 2.1 update, ignore the messages that come up it will install...reboot and voila all Working! I will be rigorously testing this over the next week so will post back any issues, hopefully there wont be any. By the way I am using the x86 version as my MBP doesn't support 64bit. So in short:
Partition > Vista (make sure fully updated) > Upgrade to Windows 7 > reinstall Boot Camp >

Thinking of buying an iMac in the next couple of months and want to know know if anyone has experience of running games on Windows 7 under Bootcamp? Do they run ok? I know it depends what sort of game you are playing so I usually play MMO's & FPS. I will be using OSX for all non gaming stuff but if the gaming under Windows 7 is not that good I may just buy a Macbook for my OSX stuff and buy a seperate PC just for gaming.

I have installed Windows 7 using bootcamp with no problems. I now want to use parallel so I can do some things in windows without restarting. I don't want to get rid of the bootcamp install though since I do gaming through it. Now that I've installed Parallel it's asking if I want to use the bootcamp partition in the virtual machine? Do I? I don't really understand.

My 27" iMac that I purchased on Dec 8 2008 had a HD failure. I was running bootcamp and Win 7 and thought I had a virus but the Apple Store geek said the HD was kaput. This has to be a record for short lived HD's on a Mac. And no, I didn't have extended warranty. Anyone else have such a bad experience? My MBP is chugging along and I'm pretty certain I will NOT partition the HD on the Mac when I get it back tomorrow.

My macbook is the new 2008 series with 2 gb of RAM, the Nvidia Geforce 9400m, and Intel processor with 2.4 ghz. I check on srtest.com and I am supposedly able to run games like Crysis very well. Yet, when I launch the new Warhammer: Dawn of War II game, I am at a loss. I can only run the gme on the very lowest settings at the lowest resolution in order to run without lag. Also, for some reason my bootcamp partition says I have only 1.72 gb of RAM. I have a feeling the partition is just not recognizing the power I have.

Has anyone tried running L4D2 in BootCamp? I was thinking about taking a punt on the original then I noticed that 2 was out. My Macbook runs Bioshock at medium settings, not the highest of frame rates but it's perfectly playable, but I'm not sure if it'll be able to handle L4D2. (Core2Duo 2ghz, 4gb DDR3, Nvidia9400M, XP 32-bit sp3).

I'm gonna be installing Windows 7 on my Mini, and running Boot Camp. It's my plan to download some legacy games from Steam (like Doom II, and Half-Life); but does anyone here have any experience with using Steam? Steam appeals to me because it's gonna be easier than hunting-down some of these games on disc. Then there's all that faff with patches and stuff, which Steam deals with automatically.

I just noticed that the sound of my 21.5" iMac speakers kinda changes notably when I'm using Windows (BootCamp). Compared to the sound while using Snow Leopard, it sound very thin, bass-less and... just strange. More like MacBook speakers, or just small speakers. Another thing is that the headphone input doesn't work on Windows. Could these issues be related to audio drivers? I don't know much about that sort of stuff.

In all of the programs, i right click, and the option bar briefly flashes, but then disappears, without letting me choose any of the options. Does anyone know why this is happening or how I can fix it?

I'm a potential switcher and I'm still going back and forth between a top of the line Thinkpad T410 and MBP 15. A big reason I'm heavily considering the MBP is that I'm interested in using Mac OS, if for nothing better than it being different and new. I'm a long-time Windows guy, and I'm actually pretty impressed with Windows 7, but I have admired Mac OS from a distance. A recent line of thinking has been: I might as well get the MBP because it can run both Windows 7 and Mac OS, whereas the Thinkpad T410 can only run Windows 7. Since I've never really used Mac OS, my fear is that in a month, i'll miss Windows 7 (unlikely, but still a possibility...). In the event that I used MBP as primarily a Windows machine, I've heard that it runs hot and the power management support is poor at the moment. I plan on leaving the MBP plugged in as a desktop about 90% of the time.
So several questions:
1) Do any of you run Windows 7 through bootcamp for a significant amount of time on your Macbook Pro's?
2) Apart from poor battery management, how is Windows 7?
3) Just for reference, is there eventually going to be improved power management support and driver updates? (From what i googled, it seems like they missed their 2009 deadline, but I can't seem to find any word that they intend to eventually release updated drivers)

I have a 15-inch MacBook Pro, the new unibody ones, and I installed Windows XP, using BootCamp.
I made it a 29 or so GB partition, so it used the FAT32 formatting.
The program I tried to install is the eyeQ speed reading program, and the laptop exceeds every single one of the recommended requirements.
The problem comes when I am attempting to install the program, I keep getting an error message in which it says "This program cannot run on a computer with less than 64 megabytes of ram."
Last time I checked my laptop has 4 GB of ram, and it says the same thing when I checked it while running Windows XP.
My only guess, which I made while typing this, was that I should have formatted the Windows partition using NTSF.

So I am trying to open up my bootcamp partition (running windows 7) in VMWare and I get this error message: Cannot open the disk '/Users/brandonquirarte/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/Virtual Machines/Boot Camp/%2Fdev%2Fdisk0/Boot Camp partition.vmwarevm/Boot Camp partition.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on. It was working just fine before the upgrade to Snow Leopard but I am not sure if that has anything to do with it. I had to reinstall Windows 7 after I tried installing the Bootcamp 3.0 drivers so that may be more of the issue. I didn't test to see if would work still when I upgraded to Snow Leopard.
