OS X V10.7 Lion :: Update From 10.7.2 To 10.7.3 Blown / Time Machine Restore Blown

Feb 6, 2012

summary of events:Update form 10.7.02 to 10.7.3 went wrongAfter Time Machine Restore no more Recovery PartionLost about what to do On Saturday, I startet to update 10.7.2 to 10.7.3 on my MB Pro 15" (2007) Apples Software Update showed the combo update, and so I started download and installation. Just before that, I had run Time Machine on an external USB drive, so I was relaxed. After about 2 hours, the update was still running with no progress. After another hour, I forced a restart. Not very suprisingly, after the login, the wheel beneath the Apple logo kept on running. So I restarted from the Recovery Partition, selected my Time Machine-Backup from the external USB drive, selected my internal HD as target and clicked on "go".While the progress bar showed progress, I waited. Then it seemed to be complete and the MBP restarted. Now I got a folder with a question mark. My heart rate did not yet accelerate, since I had a back up, right? So I restarted again trying to boot from Recovery Partition - BUT, there was no longer a Recovery Partition. Or at least, nothing I could boot from.

What options do I have? I could get my hands on a DVD that contains an Lion installation from the app store, but that is not the most recent version, as far as I can tell. If I would go that  way:Does the version of the Lion-app matter? Will it create a Recovery Partition? If not, how else could I restore a complete Time-Machine backup?

Naturally, I a am mad as **** at Apple. First, that they abandoned physical media for Mac OS distribution, and secondly that some not so bright lad thought it not necessary to secure the availability of the Recovery Partition under any circumstances short of phyical damage.

MacBook :: Defective Battery Was Swollen Due To Heat?

Mar 9, 2010

I pretty much use my Macbook in desktop mode (closed lid) since I bought it. Few days ago, I needed to do a SMC reset and the lid didn't go back on properly, it had a slight squishy feel O.O - but after a while I noticed the battery was rocking on the table. Seems like the battery has swollen up.

It might be a defective battery but I think it might be heat issues. With the lid open, it runs a lot cooler, almost a 10 degrees difference. Does any one have a similar problem?Oh, tried to get it replaced by Apple but because its more than a year they want me to buy a new battery

MacBook Pro :: Comparing Battery Life And Heat ཅ To ཆ 15" MBP?

May 19, 2010

A truly non scientific test ...

The '09 15" MBP C2D 2.8ghz, 512vram comparing to April/10 15" MBP i7, 512vram both have 4gb ram and 256ssd.

The '09 allows the user to choose the graphic card setting but you have to log out first ...

The new '10 MBP has 'auto switching' and decides what to do for you, (until Apple releases a fix, which many feel they won't do).

In our experience the '09 MBP runs cool, noticeably cooler on your lap for example in integrated mode .... But when you switch to the discrete card then you can feel it's quite a lot warmer.

Battery Meter - On full battery, switching from discrete to integrated mode adds 1 hour 41 minutes.

With the new 2010 models choosing to run in discrete mode, even when seemingly unnecessary it makes the machine feel much warmer on the bottom almost uncomfortable. That was noticed in the '09 MBP too when only when running in discrete mode, but when running in integrated it runs very cool.

Battery life is about the same on both machines, Apple advertises it increased over the '09 models, in our real world experience not the case.

This first step into Intel Graphics and these being first version machines unless you really need to upgrade now I wouldn't ... If you have an '09 or an '08 MBP chances are it's doing it work just fine and you'll notice minimal improvements and perhaps take a step backward going from Nvidia graphics to this new Intel idea .... it's not perfected yet.

Therefore unless you need/want to run in discrete mode often I'd wait until the next revision/update or at least until the graphics switching concerns are addressed by Apple.

MacBook Pro :: Seagate Momentous XT Noise - Heat - Battery Life

ive read many threads on this but havent received any conclusion to the battery life. and mixed opinions on the noise....anyone have both stock 5400rpm along with this one and done a comparison? is the speed worth it? is it still faster than the average 7200rpm once the 4gb SDD flash has been used up? my biggest concern is noise and battery life.

OS X :: Snow Leopard Heat And Battery

Sep 9, 2009

I recently updated my 2009 macbook alu (2.0ghz) to snow leopard. Everything seems to be working fine except the battery life now gets about 3 hours instead of 4 hours with everything being used max brightness etc. suspect as others have posted that this is due to the heat issues. My laptop feels noticablly hotter and istat says the cpu gets to 65 celcius when I'm on safari. Under Leopard, it never broke 60. Are other people having heat and battery issues and if so has anyone found a fix yet for this.

MacBook Pro :: Blown Speakers - Sound Extremely Static

Jun 16, 2007

I've had my MBP C2D for about 6-7 months now. Just recently both speakers seem to have blown. Any sound that comes out of it is extremely staticy. It happened the first time, but when I turned the sound off and back on again (with F3) it corrected itself. But now it's constant. I'm wondering if it's a hardware or a software issue. When I plug my iPod headphones into the side jack, I hear the same static. If it was just the speakers, wouldn't the headphones sound correct? Should I try to install the sound driver (can you do that in os x?), or do a reinstall of the OS? On a side note, I didn't buy the Apple Care package when I got my laptop.

MacBook Pro :: Screen With Dust Underneath And Sound Blown?

Dec 13, 2009

I've had a few bad experiences with Apple in the past- namely, going to their Sydney Apple Store to get my logic board repaired, but came out with a scratched bottom case that the Genius couldn't replace. Anyway, six months have passed and my screen has dust underneath it. My speakers have 'blown', well, not really, but they sound very cheap now. My graphics card has also gone a bit wonky. Do you think they'll replace my Macbook Pro this time?

I finally got around to replacing the whole screen today. Fired the thing up. Display looked great. It worked for about an hour before I heard a weird noise from the computer and the backlight went out again.

Safari :: Efficiently Delete Excess Favicons?

Mar 17, 2012

Deleting all Safari's favicons often seems to speed up Safari 5.0.6 (in OS X 10.5.8 on a late-2008 Intel MacBook Pro), but it slows me down when I use long Bookmarks lists with generic-looking entries.  I've read that Safari saves a favicon for every site it visits (if it finds one)!  My webpageIcons.db file is 9.8 MB now (versus 156 KB for Bookmarks.plist and 788 KB for HistoryIndex.sk).  Is there an efficient way to save just the favicons my Bookmarks lists use, and delete all the others?  Wouldn't this speed up Safari almost as much as deleting them all?

IMac :: Internal Speakers Blown Out?

Dec 27, 2009

Is there a way to tell if/how my speakers are damaged? I have 24" aluminum imac (bought December 2007, whichever model that is), and I was using the internal speakers (I don't normally do this). I was playing an avi file (xvid / mp3 encoding) on VLC.app, and i struck the space bar to pause it. Instead of stopping, my comp emitted an extremely loud "beep" sound at around 400 Hz, and ever since the audio has been weird. At first it was sorta/really scratchy and broken and a little diminished in loudness, but now it is very quiet, playing sounds at around 1/4 the normal volume. What the hell happened to it?

IMac :: System Running Slow Because Of Blown Capacitors

I was talking to a friend last night and he was saying him mom had a 4 year old iMac that she had barely used. Her windows computer died and the local computer shop moved everything to the iMac and when the mom complained the iMac was slow the computer shop told her it had blown caps. To me blown caps wouldn't cause it to run slow, lock up and be unreliable I would believe but not slow. Has anyone had a Mac just run slow because of blown capacitors?

MacBook :: Getting Heat Up?

Aug 26, 2010

i think my macbook is running rather hot lately as I have the fan set at 6200(max) and it seems to idle at 50C and I had skype running with a few people and it was reaching 80C! It never used to get that high before! It is a Dec31st 06 (lol 1 day from 07) model and I do have the ability to open these models and apply the thermal paste again as I have done plenty times before and also fit Mac Pro serviceable options such as BT and AP

I know how to open it and clean it but theres no dust in it to make it that hot I might have to try max load and see if it overheats

MacBook Pro :: Where Does The Heat Disburse

Jan 13, 2011

I am designing a stand that will allow me to slide my Mac underneath my Dell U2410 basically. It will be made of wood, and the mac portion will be raised ~1" from the desk. The front and back will be open, and I'm also going to make slots for the optical drive as well as a hole in the left side for I/O. However I also want to make sure it doesn't get too hot. So basically I'm wondering if there is a central place where the heat essentially "exits?" I was thinking of putting a few holes into the board so that the heat could leave the stand that way...but any other ideas?

MacBook Air :: New MBA And Heat Fixing?

Oct 14, 2008

Once anyone gets to test the new MBA out (next month?), if you can please post the results on heat issues. Eg the initial MBA in many cases was only usable at 50% CPU/GPU (for more than a few minutes) due to heat issues. Does the new one fix it? If so, it is effectively more than double the speed.. more like 3-4x faster if that makes sense. If GPU is much faster AND heat issues are fixed, this could be a huge performance boost..

I went in to the Apple Store yesterday to buy a MacBook pro 15". I currently have a 2009 13" MacBook Pro. I decided to go top of the line with the i7 even though the Apple Sale Person said I didn't need the speed. I wanted to not look back later and say I should have gotten the best. What I noticed last night was I had it on my lap on battery power doing my normal surfing. On flash sites it got a bit uncomfortable on my lap. About 70 degrees C. I have never noticed it before on my 13". Should I take it back for an i5 and would that make any difference or is all of this just normal for this type of computer?
