PowerPC :: IBook 1.0ghz G4 With Leopard

Nov 5, 2007

I was wondering if Leopard would slow down my old iBook. It's a 1ghz G4 with 1.12gb RAM. Would Leopard be okay, or should I just keep Tiger on it?

PowerPC :: Installing Leopard / Tiger On Imac G4 1.0ghz

Nov 4, 2010

ive got a Imac 17inch 1.0ghz with 215mb ddr ram. anyways, as Sheepy suggested, i upgraded her to a nice speedy 500GB 7200 Sata drive and dropped 1.5gb ram into her...... but lets take a step back. when i got her, she was full of dust and had tiger on her.. no dramas, tiger is good. anyways, i wanted to do a reinstall of tiger, and so grabbed my tiger retail disk and started her up, no dramas there either, ran disk util, repartitioned (the old disk) and started to install. the install never finished and then it just rebooted after about 80% through... The reboot came to the disk flashing with the osx face and a question mark. I try a few more times, with the same result, and also with Leopard, also with the same result, but the leopard install actually tells me after about 80% that "Install failed" try again? anyways, so i think its a shagged optical drive. i have a few lying around and i need to get in there anyways to upgrade the hard drive. installing the HD and the new Optical drive went fine, all works well.. and while i was there also installed 500mb ddr400 stick in the main memory non user slot. close her up, checked the heatsink matchup spots and there dry as a nuns nasty.. theres no paste on them, but kinda like a pad.. (which isnt even sticky either) anyways, i stick em back together (without) cleaning the pad stuff nor with applying any paste and boot her up. I insert the leopard disk to istall and it all goes fine, i re-partition the newspeedy 7200rpm sata disk and start the install. and again.... gets to about 90% and reboots. flashing smily face with alternating question mark.

PowerPC :: IMac G4 1.0ghz 17" More Than 1gb Of Memory?

Jan 30, 2007

I am looking to upgrade the current memory in my iMac. It has 512 (2x256) and it says it supports up to 1gb total. However, i have been searching all over this forum seeing if it is possible to have more. Like if I added a 1gb sodimm to get it to 1.2gb. I have seen very little on this as I have searched these threads. Also, is the upgrade in memory really going to help me out? I really notice the slowdown in iMovie. I have been watching the activity monitor and even though the cpu can get up to 100%, the free memory will be down to 4 mb. oh ya, I am running 10.3.9. When i update the os, with a clean install, will i see any improvements without additional memory? Or will i need more memory just to keep tiger or possibly leopard running good?

PowerPC :: Mac-Mini 2.0ghz Vs. Powermac G5 2.5ghz X2

Jun 15, 2008

Our old powermac died recently (G5 2.5ghz x2), the cost to repair was quoted at 850$, which is roughly the same price as a new Mac-Mini 2.0ghz. Just wondering how the performance of new mini compares to the 4 year old powermac? A new powermac is out of the question right now.

PowerPC :: Cannot Install Leopard On An IBook?

Dec 17, 2007

I've bought a iBook from eBay for my mum and grabbed a copy of Leopard, but every time I try and install it I get the following message:"Install Failed - The installer could not validate the contents of the 'BaseSystem' package. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."I know the disc itself is fine as I previously used it to install Leopard on my Macbook. I've also just bought a brand new 1Gb stick of memory from Crucial as I read in a few places that "this message is due to faulty RAM in 99.9% of cases".

PowerPC :: Ibook G4 - Leopard Or Tiger?

Jan 15, 2008

I've got a ibook 1.2 ghz w/ 1.25 gigs of ram. I'm going to be using it for school. Just some word processing, email/internet, and music. It came with panther and it has the latest updates.. Is it worth it to get Tiger for it? Will I notice a huge difference? Things are alright now, but I'm used to my MBP zipping through everything. I know it won't ever be as zippy as the MBP, but will Tiger make a huge difference?

PowerPC :: IBook - Tiger Or Leopard?

Jan 20, 2010

I recently bought an iBook with a 1.33 GHz processor, 1 GB of ram, and a 60 GB hard drive. It's still 3 to 8 days until it gets delivered, but I was doing some thinking, and couldn't decide between Tiger and Leopard. It comes with Tiger and iLife (not sure what version of iLife). My brother has a Leopard install disk that he says he'll lend me if I want to install it. I am leaning toward Leopard, but only because it has a nicer GUI, in my opinion at least. I'll probably use Tiger on it for a week before deciding to whether upgrade or not.

PowerPC :: IBook G4 At Leopard - Recover Files

Jan 9, 2009

i've been using Leopard for a few months already. yesterday, i made a great mistake - i installed ShapeShifter (which currently doesn't support Leopard). the problem is that the Login Window doesn't show up anymore. when i boot my ibook, the system normally loads up and then the blue background appears, so does the cursor... but no login window! i can't really do anything. i'm still not sure if it's the only cause of the problem, cause before the great surprise i also performed a full cleaning with Onyx (yay, this time the Leopard version -.-) but i don't really think that it could cause the problem. now i don't know what to do. haven't tried booting from the Leopard DVD neither the Tiger one, but i think that it wouldn't really help. i also can't access my hdd via network because i can't even log-in. what to do? y point is mainly to recover all my files before i entirely reinstall the system. although i would be really happy if i could get the system working again of course.

PowerPC :: Ibook Freezes During Leopard Install

May 4, 2009

I naively tried to install leopard OS on my 5-year old ibook G4 (with very little RAM). It makes a horrible clicking sound from the dvd drive and freezes on the screen that says its looking for OS 10.4(?) (which is not on the computer). When I reboot it immediately starts the install process, because the dvd is still stuck in the drive, and freezes over & over again.

All I want to do is remove the disc and go back to the original OS, so that I can add more RAM and update the OS properly. (The only motive for the update is so that I can have the same version of Garageband 2008 on both my desktop and laptop so I can work with the files interchangably.)

Is there a way to restart the computer that bypasses the install disc and dosen't default into the install porocess?

PowerPC :: Upgrading IBook G4 Running On Tiger To Leopard?

Dec 23, 2010

A friend of mine gave me her old iBook G4 so I can fix it. Something was wrong with it (half the applications are missing, spotlight reindexes every time it restarts etc). So I'm just gonna reinstall everything from the ground up. My question is though, should I install Tiger again or would Leopard be better? The only thing I am afraid of is that Leopard would slow down the iBook since it's an older Laptop. Here are the specs:

iBook G4 (PowerBook6,7)
CPU: 1.33GHz - PowerPC G4 (1.5)
512MB Ram
ATI Mobility Radeon 9550
40GB HDD

PowerPC :: IBook G4 Will Not Install Leopard From Partitioned Drive?

Dec 28, 2010

I have a PPC iBook G4 with 1.3 Ghz and 1 GB SDRAM that I bought new in 2006. I've never had a single problem with the machine, but it doesn't have a superdrive and the OS Tiger capabilities are limiting.

Last year I upgraded to Leopard with a .dmg via FW external drive and loved the interface, but with only a 40GB HD I deleted any app I didn't need. Over the summer I bought a new iMac, but I still need the laptop whenever I'm away from my desk. I tried erasing and reinstalling now that I don't have to keep much data on the drive...interested in getting back those non-essential apps. I've done it before with the exact same resources, but this time it's not working. I'm hoping someone out there can tell me what step I'm forgetting.

Here's what I've done:

1. Connected iBook to iMac in target mode via FW and erased/partitioned HD in Apple Partition Format.

2. Reinstalled Tiger on iBook from original disc.

3. Connected iBook to external drive via FW and restored .dmg to smaller partition on iBook.

4. Opened .cdr on smaller partition, saw the Leopard disc image, set the Leopard install disc as the startup disc in System Preferences. Hit restart button in System Preferences and got the little "not happeneing" noise.

5. Went to desktop and opened the Leopard installer disk image and pressed the install/restart button there. Reboot was slow and dark at first, but ultimately booted Tiger.

6. Went back to System Preferences, selected Leopard install disc as the startup disc again, locked the selection and restarted...booted Tiger again.

7. Tried these tactics again while holding option key and then S key at restart, but the second partition with the installer was never recognized. Tried from Safe Mode, only booted Tiger.

8. Then I tried connecting the external drive again and opened the .dmg, then .cdr from there. Again System Preferences recognized the installer, but it would not boot with the same variables as before.

9. I connected the iBook to the iMac in target disc mode again and ran disc utility, all good. Then I did same with external drive, all good. I made sure both drives and the install disc image were bootable. Tried the boot again from both, all bad.

10. I did a lot of reading on troubleshooting this process and thought it might be a permissions problem, that the installer was not executable. I did a terminal tutorial and managed to make the partitioned drive and disc image both owner enabled. Still the exact same results as when I started.

Obviously it's not the end of the world if I don't include iLife (even if it is iLife 05), but I think it would help me sell the iBook if iLife was included.

PowerPC :: Hard Drive Swapping - IBook G3 And IBook G4

Oct 20, 2006

My brother's iBook G4 (800Mhz, First Rev) has completely splattered itself and we're getting a new Macbook for him under insurance. My iBook G3 (White, 900Mhz G3..the last G3 Rev of the iBook) has a failing hard drive.

Now, could I swap out those two drives, at least to recover stuff? And is there a specific method of opening up the iBook G4 so that I don't break stuff (I've already messed with my G3..and ended up with a dozen extra screws ^_^

Mainly the aim is to salvage the hard drive and swap them out; replacing my faulty iBook G3 one with the iBook G4 one which is perfectly fine.
