I recently picked up a 500GB SimpleTech External Drive at a yard sale, assuming it would be empty and ready to go on my Macbook. Yet, the drive is full and says I can only read the drive. Is there a way I can make the drive writable so that I can delete all of the files and start anew?

So I just bought a SimpleTech Simple Drive 60gb to use on my MacBook with Mac OS X 10.4.11. I followed the instructions and plugged the Mini-B part of the USB cable in the hard drive and the other end of the USB plug in my MacBook. The instructions tell me I am supposed to see the drive pop up on my desktop but I see absolutely nothing.

Is there anyway i can make the Time Machine HD writable as i want to delete / move a couple of folders/files from it.
If i can boot from the TM HD also i am ok.

OK so i called tech support and talked to them about my cracked macbookthey helped me out but in the process they asked me for my Password on my macbook. then he told me to make a backup.
the reason is because just like many people out there i am on of those people who got iLife09 by not paying awww!!! what to do?will they go through my hard drive? how can i make a backup on my external drive, so i can delete everything on my macbook then bring everything back?
i have made a bootable lion hard drive before and it worked fine. But after the 10.7.4 update i am unable to make another one. When i follow the usual steps
1- download lion from app store
2- show package contents
3- contents- shared contens- drag and drop them dmg file into disk utility (something along those lines).
4-restore drive (external hard drive) and drag the lion file to the 'source' area and the external hard drive to the 'destination' area.
5- When i hit restore it does everything but at the end it says something like "failed, invalid argument'?

I am thinking about how to add extra storage to my macbook pro, and thinking that the simplest way would be to get a WD 2T and boot from that as a matter of course. I would use the internal drive for back-up. The reason for this is that the 1T internal is getting full. The other option is to replace the Super Drive (DVD/CD Drive) with a 750G, and have the dvd/cd drive external. What is better?

I use one for my wireless mouse, and I use the other for an external hard drive because the amout of space on my Mac is no-where near enough for what I am going to use up.
I am just wondering if there is a way I can either:
1. Get more USB ports (if its possible)
2. Hook up my mouse to a Thunderbolt port (again if that is possible)

When I went to reboot, it would not. All I get is the universal sign for stop (circle with a 45 degree angle line through it). My mother has no backups whatsoever. She needs her information. I am in need of a safe way to retrieve her information.I have tried the basic help from Apple's site--nothing worked. A friend told me that I might be able to boot the computer from a bootable external hard drive and pull the information off that way.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo today, i got a warning message from time machine saying it's past 10 days blah blah, so i plugged it my external harddrive to back up my stuff. At first, it recognized it and i thought it was backing up since i saw that logo turning counterclockwise.
Then when it stopped turning, i just close the lid of my MBP (btw running leopard) to eat dinner. When i came back and opened the lid, it says "improper removal of blah blah" but it was still plugged in. so i unplugged it.
Later, i saw that the exclamation mark is still there inside the time machine logo, so i plugged the hd back in but now nothing shows up.
i have a simpletech hard drive running MBP leopard, the latest.
I've had a lot of problems with my iMac G5 power supply and since I have newer computers I've decided to get rid of this computer.
I want to save the hard drive and put it in a case, then use it as an external drive on my other Macs.
What sort of case do I need to shop for? Should I look for SATA or what exactly is the proper nomenclature.
Is USB 2 the preferred choice, or Firewire, or what? Is there a USB 3? I use a mid-2010 27 inch iMac with the intel processor, and I needed to buy an adapter to use my older Firewire external drive. Is Firewire a dodo?
I'm having a problem with Apple Mail. It won't let me open .doc attachments in a compose window, yet I can open .docx attachments without issue. For example, when I compose a new message and attach a document, I like to double click the attachment within the message to confirm that I'm sending the right file to my client.
With 10.5, this wasn't an issue. Everything opened as expected. But with 10.6, I get an error message that says "Mail was unable to save the attachment "file_name" to disk. Verify that your downloads folder exists and is writable." Again, this is ONLY happening with .doc files and it happens no matter which account in Mail I choose to send from.
How I get OS X on the SSD without a disc? Can I download the installer on a flash drive somehow? Also, If this is really good using my Macbook Pro's HDD for a backup HDD, instead of buying one? I have no use for it anyway, if and when I get a new SSD. BTW, the HDD is the upgraded factory 500gb 7200rpm. Also, do you think it's smarter to have a bigger backup drive than internal drive?
In other words, I would like to get a 1TB Samsung 850 Pro SSD, and my current HDD is only 500GB.... I am a musician and need a lot of storage for musical purposes. Is it possible? I am seeking a solution for my household computing needs. We have a laptop (Mac) and a desktop (Dell). I would like to have one external drive to backup both the laptop and PC and also for storage for both. Is this possible? Would it be a four way partition? View 2 Replies View RelatedProblem exists on MacBook Pro (15", Late 2008) and MacBook Air (11", Late 2010) using a mini-displayport -> VGA adapter. When an external monitor (Dell E177FP) is connected it is recognized but appears as a "VGA Display". No problems with usage, however when the mac is put to sleep the monitor sees it as a no signal situation and displays its built in test instead of going into powersave mode. When I first hooked up the monitor I was using an old cable that was most likely damaged (screen was showing alot of artifacts) but this problem did not occur and the display slept fine. I then bought a new Belkin 6' VGA cable and have had this problem ever since.
I compared the two cables and noticed the new one had the #9 pin, where the old had just a blank. Thinking maybe this old monitor didn't like to have the 5V coming in I modified (Read: ripped out pin #9) my new cable to no avail.

trying to partition the drive (320 gig) to install windows 7 on. after allocating the space and setting the format to FAT32, it quits about half way and tells me partition failure. try lowering the amount of space devoted to the partition. even when shortening it I keep getting the same error.
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy friend gave me his old Apple cube G4 + 15" Cinema display in like 1000 pieces. Its completely teared apart. I tried a lot, but it doesn't work. The original IDE cable wasn't included, so I bought one for 2 cents. It should work or not? Maybe the powersupply. I'm not sure. I don't believe actually that the hardware itself, like the motherboard is broken. When everything is into place and I connect the cube to the powersupply it boots immediately. I don't have to do anything. Harddrive spins and the superdrive makes some noise as well. This repeats itself every 5 seconds. The screen is connected and gets power through DVI, but no display. Both the cube and display have touch enabled buttons to switch it on, but they do not respond (I guess).. Motherboard gives 2 light. DS1 is green, DS2 is red.

It sounds like a fan but isn't... obviously. Right hand side of track pad, and covering it, in fact just touching it dampens it to barely audible. Is that normal or has something gone a bit weird? A constant fan noise, which isn't the fan is now there permanently.
