So I started up my macbook this morning and have been using it for awhile when I went to go play some music and can't get any sound. When I hit the volume buttons it shows a shadow of the speaker logo and a circle with a line through it under the volume bar. I have tried a restart and also went into sound controls, where it says "The device has no output devices" . What can I do/what's going on?
View 11 RepliesA few weeks ago my MacBook Air suddenly would not play any audio. It would happne off and on. Usually the sound would come back after restarting. Now, though, I can't seem to get my audio to come back at all, no matter what I do. Here are a few screenshots to give you an idea of what's going on: I've restarted. I cleared permissions with Onyx. I verified and repaired disk permissions with Disk Utitlity. Still no audio.

This just happened to me the other day, I plugged a pair of apple headphones in used them and then unplugged them. The next day I noticed that I was not getting any sound from my macbook air, no startup sound, no OS sounds, and even the headphones are not detected when plugged in. I've tried all the tricks and so far nothing.
Of course my mac is just out of warranty at the end of March and I'm going to imagine this is a small fortune to get fixed. Since last time I took it in while it was in warranty they wanted 900 bucks to replace my HDD
Anyone else run across this, I'm thinking of just throwing it on craiglist or ebay for like 900 bucks as is and buying a normal laptop
Hey, my macbook was getting rather slow so I decided to do a clean install of Leopard, but now I have absolutely no sound whatsoever apart from the startup chime! The volume keys now don't control volume and instead do expose and dashboard.
I did however install it with a Leopard disk that was from a shop and not one of the grey ones that came with the computer, is that the problem? If so how can I fix it?
My MacbookPro sound suddenly stopped working. It was working fine yesterday, but rght after I unplugged the headset, I don't have any sound anymore. I do not have any red light on the audio jack. I do not have any internal and output devices found under the System Preferences. I already tried resetting the PRAM and NVRAM, SMC and nothing works! I have the latest verion 10.7.4, Core i7.

My sound has completely quit working. In the sound system prefs I get a massage saying "No output devices found". If I press the volums button keys the onscreen display comes up but has a 'no access' icon on it (a circle with a line through it). The icon in the toolbar has also vanished and there's just a blank space in its place.
Oddly whatever happened also seems to have effected my ability to view Flash movies -*the will play for a few seconds an then pause *they don't stutter they just pause. I think that whatever the issue is it was caused by a force shut down. All my applications were hanging so I had to press down the power button for a few seconds. Since then nothing!
This also effects the start-up sound which I don't get and all users of the machine are the same so it's not a case of deleting users prefs. So far I reinstalled the latest system using combo updater, run disk utility to repair disk/privileges (from start up disk) and zapped the PRAM.
All of the sudden the sound on my MacBook is no longer working. When I look at System Preferences>Sound>Output it says there are no devices found, even when I plug in external speakers.

I lost my macbook speakers sound after instalation, there is grey icon and I can't control volume. Please let me know all possible ways to resolve problem. Btw,after reboot I heard sound when mac loads, and its working when I using headphones. When I start iTunes, and plug out head phones there is a red light. When I close iTunes red light disapears. But no sound at all.

I had a first gen aluminum 13" Macbook that I spilled beer on. It was basically a write-off, but fortunately the HD was not damaged.I just got my 13" Macbook Pro today, and replaced the new HD with my old one. Everything is working fine, except that there is no sound.When I go to System->Sound I see "No Output devices found", and when I press the sound buttons on the keyboard, the speaker is grayed out.I know this is not a Hardware issue for a couple reasons. First, it properly 'chimes' on startup. Second, I did try running the computer with the new hard drive, and during the sound was working properly, volume adjustment buttons working, etc.

What's the best (read cheapest) device for decoding the optical output to analog?
If this won't work, I'm probably willing to shell out a bit more cash (Z-5500 perhaps). If you have a digital 5.1 system recommendation ($350 or less), let me know.

The Sound Settings show no output device. When trying to adjust the sound a circle with a line through it appears. Cannot run the volume adjusted up or down either. Was running fine yesterday - feels like it may be hardware problem?
When I start my Macbook Pro (mid 2009 15") I get the familiar audio chime. However, when it finishes startup and I get to my desktop, I have no audio, and the audio icon up top is grayed out. The audio output jack works fine. I can use speakers and headphones. I've tried the solution of wiggling around a headphone plug in the jack, as well as doing the same with a toothpick. I've also reset the PRAM. For some reason, the problem persists. When I open sound settings in preferences, the only device listed is "Digital Out" and there is a message under it saying "The Selected Device has No Output Controls."

I picked up a really cool wireless USB speaker set and want to use it with my current gen iMac running Snow Leopard. Problem is that as far as I can tell, and I've done some searching, that it's either the USB audio, or my internal iMac speakers, one or the other - not both.
could use both outputs at the same time? Internal speakers and the wireless USB ones?
Occasionally after booting back into OS X from bootcamp (windows 7 home premium), I will not have any audio output devices. If I restart OS X again they return, anyone have what maybe happening here? This is on a 09 MP...
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was with sounds problems using OS 10.2 and I decided to format my disk and make a clean install. After installing 10.2, my sound was working well. I upgraded to 10.2.1 and in the following restart when I tried to use iTunes, no sound at all. When I hit play not even the cursor moves; nothing happens. I opened the Sound control panel, and in the Outpu tab there's a message saying:
" no output devices were found"
I cannot figure out what's happening. My computer sound is OK; everything works fine when I restart using OS 9.2.2.
I frequently have to switch my sound output device from Line Out to Headphones. I know all about the Option-Click of the menubar icon, but what I really want is to assign a hotkey to cycle through them (similar to the alt tab program scroll) when I can't easily get up to cross the room for my mouse.
If it helps I use a Logitech DiNovo Mac edition keyboard. I've looked all through it's prefpane but it doesn't have an option to switch sound outputs. If there was an unknown keyboard shortcut to switch outputs then I could easily just assign it to an Fx key.
On my 2009 I've noticed now that after using bootcamp for a bit then booting back into os x that i have no sound available, there's no sound devices in preferences. This is using the line-out jack.

View 2 Replies View RelatedHaving gone through the settings, i have a speaker system plugged into my white macbook through the 3.5mm audio jack. I am running OS X Leopard 10.5.7 and am unable to find the options that i thought were available previously in tiger to configure the speaker setup/orientation. For example whether i am using satellite speakers, or 2 speakers either side, 3 4 or whatever it was, just like i would if i was using windows. It has a section under "Sound" then "Output", however it seems to be automated, i cannot add or remove, or edit items within the list.

And at the top of the screen where it shows the volume, it is grayed out. And when I hit the volume up/down/mute button on my keyboard, it has a circle with a line through it. If I play a song on iTunes, sound comes out and I can control the volume through the Logitech controller like normal. But even when something is playing, it still won't let me adjust the volume through the computer.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have multiple displays connected via the HDMI port and one to the mini port as well and a theater sound system attached to the headphone jack. How do you turn on sound output to both HDMI and headphone jack. If the headphone jack is plugged in, it always defaults to that device. I am unable to hear the audio at the remote displays without removing the headphone jack.

Just today I have installed an application which was to do with sound switching , called "soundflower" once iv installed and run it there was an option "create multiple sound switch" did chose and start to creating a multiple, as soon as it started my sound card panel display as "no sound card founded" and my sound icon on the top bar turned to light gray.
Double click on that and when it opens you will see your hard drive (usually Macintosh HD) on the left. Highlight your hard drive and click on Verify Disk on the far right. If that is OK click on Repair Permissions on the left. If Verify Disk is not OK try to Repair. If Repair is successful then Repair Permissions if it is not successful let me know. But problem still remains.

I just got this new iMac that I got used and the sound on the computer does not seem to be working, I have tried doing what the computer tells me and going into System Preferences and selecting the sound option, but the sound seems to have been permanently disabled and shows that there are no output or input devices available, when clearly the monitor has speakers. whats more, is that the volume icon does not show up in the menu bar even when I select that I want it in the menu bar.

I have Mac Pro with Digidesign/ProTools interface connected. I sometimes switch sound output from MP to run through the digidesign hardware. I'm getting message right now saying "selected device has no output controls", not allowing me to switch. I rebooted with the interface already turned on. I've run into theis before- can't figure out what causes this to happen. Sometimes it's OK. ?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was in Audio MIDI Setup and I clicked one of the checkboxes to add a device to something or something like that and all the devices vanished from the list and sound stopped working. After closing Audio MIDI Setup I am unable to open it again, even after restarting and getting all the updates. Skype now freezes and doesn't load. Sound preferences also have trouble and freeze up if I try to load them. I would really like to have sound from my computer again!
