My partner has a MacBook which is running Tiger the problem we have is that once it logs into the OS Desktop and you click on anything the rainbow ball shows up and it seems the computer locks up. She has some files on it that she wants to get off. We don't have the mac's networked and can't get them to due to this problem.
View 3 RepliesI have a Macbook running Leopard and an iMac running Tiger. I am looking to upgrade Leopard to Snow Leopard and Tiger to Leopard. If I were to purchase Snow Leopard and install it on the Macbook, would I then be able to use the copy of Leopard that came with the Macbook on the iMac? I am not trying to use 2 copies of the same thing on different machines, I just want to put a new os on one machine and move the existing one to another.I am reluctant to purchase the Mac Box Set version of Snow Leopard for the iMac because I do not want or need iLife and iWork.
View 2 Replies View RelatedRecently (in addition to other seemingly unrelated password problems), files on my desktop became locked. Finder asks for a password to delete them. I believe an Apple Genius said thought this was normal behavior, but we've never had that happen before on this computer (Mac intel core 2 duo v10.7.4) or anyother of our Apple computers, which are several years old.
So, is this suspicious activity, or is this a normal feature of the OS?

I am currently running an Imac (white) with Tiger. I run pro tools and its not compatable with leopard yet. Im trying to figure out a way that I can get a new macbook and run both tiger and leapord so that I can run pro tools.

2. If it's possible, can it be installed without clearing the hard drive? I don't want to have to transfer and reinstall apps, ideally. I know this has to do with partitioning, but beyond that I'm clueless.
starting with my iMac permanently sending crash reports, unbidden and unstoppable. I started with 10.4, and I'm now on 10.6 in after repeated attempt to get a useable mac. All was well, until I included another external disk to the time machine backups. It took nearly two days, then seemingly with around 5Gb to go, it suddenly stopped and said it had finished. I logged out and went to work, coming back to find it was still locked in a plain blue screen. I left it overnight, still like it this morning, so I did a forced shutdown. It wouldn't restart. I rebooted from the 10.6 disk, but it said the hard disc was irrecoverable and I needed to erase. I erased and reinstalled, but when it came to restoring from Time Machine, it didn't recognise the backups. Checking on the backup disk it has a folder indicated it is still in a backup. If I try to enter a different backup through the Time Machine icon in the backup, it too says I can't because it's in the middle of a backup.
Is there any way I can delete this folder and get it to let me back in? I don't want to just delete it without some guidance as it's taken me weeks of reinstall just to get this far, having persuaded the likes of TurboCad to let me re-install from a download. I feel I'm on the threshold of having to start all over again. I attached a sticky (I have no apps to speak of at the moment) which had an image of the error message, showing two icons within minutes of each other, one showing a completed backup, the other a message icon stating backup in progress. I don't think the image on the sticky can be accessed...
I have a white 2.0 Ghz MacBook running Tiger 10.4.8 with the latest firmware updates, and 2 GB RAM. I also have an external IDE drive partitioned as FAT32, sitting in a relatively-no-name enclosure via firewire, daisy-chained through my Presonus Firebox external audio unit (I know, not ideal for recording). The MacBook's HDD also has an NTFS partition with XP residing there. Now, it all worked great for a month now, but this week I started having a strange issue. First I noticed that the fans started kicking in even though I wasn't doing anything special. I fired the Activity Monitor up, and indeed, the CPU load was at 140%. So I looked among the processes, and one named "Mass Storage" seemed to be frozen. The obvious, but perhaps a little dangerous, thing to do was to quit it, so I did.
The CPU load returned to normal, and I was still able to access the external drive just fine. So, now, whenever I connect the firewire drive, the mass storage process hangs. I quit it, and everything goes back to normal from there. The question is.. Why does it freeze, and also, what is the whole <i>point</i> of the 'mass storage' process if quitting it doesn't affect anything? When I plug the drive in, iPhoto launches automatically, and by the files that mass storage opens, I'm going to try and track down what's causing it to hang. The last file it opens on the list is /dev/urandom. Also, now that I think about it, FAT32 probably isn't the best filesystem out there. I do need the drive to be compatible with both OS X and Windows though. I suppose I could try HFS+ under OS X, and then using Mac Drive under Win to access the disk.
For some reason, my desktop icons are stacked on my hard drive. I am able to drag the items to the trash or another folder but I cannot move them to another location on the desktop. I did check the "get info" on the desktop and the "locked" option is not checked. Any file that I download or save immediately appears in the top right corner of the desktop on top of the HD icon. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

I'm new to Macs and I probably messed up my installation so I would like to start from scratch and reinstall Leopard on a brand new drive. Here's my question.. I would like to remove the old drive from bay 1 and replace it wit the new drive. After I install Leopard on the new drive can I put the old drive in the currently empty bay 4? Will I then be able to boot into either drive? The reason being that until I get the new installation configured properly and all my applications reinstalled, I may need access to the old installation. If this scenario will work, how do I select which volume to boot at start up?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI installed Vitural PC on a G5 machine running Tiger 10.4 OS. It works fine as I installed WINDOWS XP and Microsoft Outlook2003. Outlook works great when it connects to Exchange 5.5. However, The user who I am supporting wants to attached files stored in his Mac. to send in Outlook. Under Vitural PC menu, there is a way to transfer files from PC to Mac. (basicly drag and drop works!). The problem is I can not fine a way to tranfer files from Mac to the Vitural PC. What do I have to do to make this work?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently got a Powermac G4 MDD 2003 that I plan to use as my main computer. I have been experiencing issues, where the computer freezes and I have no choice but to hold down the power button, in order to shut down. Also, and music or sounds that are playing at the time repeat the last 0.5 seconds or so of playback. It runs Mac OSX Tiger, and I reinstalled the system yesterday, but not much seems to have changed.
I have had many thoughts as to what causes this issue, like my other computer being connected through the network, my external hard drive, Adobe flash player, and the core system files being corrupt. But none of these have proven to be the issue. I have done a number of system maintenence routines, such as clearing the PRAM, 'fsck -y' from Apple + S on boot (I don't know what its called), and endlessly repairing the disk in disk utility. While writing this message, I got a kernel panic error.
I want to know how to install and open my application and to download bootcamp.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI tried starting it up and everything goes normally. The loading bar that says "Mac OSX starting" works fine. The mouse pointer appears as normal. The dock will not appear. The menu bar at the top will not appear. No desktop icons will appear. My desktop's background image will not appear. There has to be another way to start a program other than graphically. As the name implies HDD_tiger has 10.4.11 on it. goal state: I want to join the "shared" and "other" partitions without ffecting "HDD_tiger". Other data that might be needed: I don't care what the other name of the partition is but I plan to move my iTunes files from an external HD to this new > 70GB partition. I have 66GB in my iTunes folder (hence the reason it's on an external HD). Date of Manufacture: less than 8 months after Apple went to Intel processors

A friend of mine gave me her old iBook G4 so I can fix it. Something was wrong with it (half the applications are missing, spotlight reindexes every time it restarts etc). So I'm just gonna reinstall everything from the ground up. My question is though, should I install Tiger again or would Leopard be better? The only thing I am afraid of is that Leopard would slow down the iBook since it's an older Laptop. Here are the specs:

Is anyone using the MBA with Remote Desktop Connection? I am concerned that the program I would be running remotely may be be too small to read comfortably. I have only used it with my iMacs, and have never seen it run on a MB or MBP.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI use an external hard drive for Time Machine backups and to store some larger video files in a folder called Videos. The Videos folder on the external drive is now locked and I can't unlock it. I go to Get Info, hit the lock icon and enter my password, but the "Locked" checkbox is greyed out in the General section. In the Sharing and Permissions section, instead of displaying my name, it says "Fetching . . ." and I can't change the Privilege from "Write Only".

three times today, and once yesterday, my iBook with 10.4.11 has been acting odd. More than normal.On Safari, the downloads window pops up, and says "Desktop-X" has downloaded. A small blank white rectangle icon in the Download window shows, called "Desktop-X", so I clear it. I have things from Safari to download to the Desktop, but it's not there.I find it, but it's not a file. It's now an empty folder, and it's sitting in my Home folder. There are three of them. View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an iBook G4 that's running Tiger 10.4.11 and the most recent version of Safari and just recently when I try to open up some web pages I get the error message "Safari can't open the page "http://whateverthewebaddressis" because it can't find the server". It will open some pages, some of the time and then a few minutes later if I try to open it again it will give me the error message. It is not a problem with my internet, as I also have a new iMac running leopard and Safari has never had a problem opening the same pages at the same time.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI can't seem to edit any pictures with Preview anymore since I upgraded to Lion. Every time I try to save an image after resizing or whatever, it says the file is locked. If I check the info of the file the "locked" checkmark is unchecked. And I have all the permissions to the file. Tried everything, switched the "lock after 2 weeks" thing of in Time Machine (even though tha would probably not help: images I took today are still "locked" in Preview), tried copying them and then saving them, and tried to lock them and then unlock them, but I can't seem to edit and save them.

Getting a message within photoshop that files cannot be saved as they are locked. I check the same files with 'Get Info' and the locked file box is unchecked. I have changed file permissions on the entire disc so that everyone can read/write but still the same message. Tried terminal command to uncheck flags also to no avail. I can do save as but a little frustrating. Is there a workaround to get all my files back onside?
This is a new disc that I may have installed without due care to permissions/ownership when I formatted it.
