OS X :: External Hard Drive Constantly Working / Reading
Jan 13, 2010I recently bought an external hard drive (like 2 weeks ago)- I put two partitions on it, one set as a Time Machine backup (HFS+) and one as file storage (FAT32 to make compatible with Windows XP boot on my Macbook Pro). When I first got it, I remember being surprised by how quiet it was. I filled it up and now, whenever I plug the drive in, it makes a sound like it's constantly reading (reminds me of the sound old, old computers used to make when thinking a lot, i.e. with the blinking orange light).
As soon as I start 'using' it (for instance, turning Time Machine backup on, etc.) it suddenly starts running quiet again. I made sure to make it 'invisible' to Spotlight so it doesn't index the drive... what else could be accessing the drive and making it work so hard? The constant 'grinding' of the drive is really bothersome!

Jun 4, 2014I have an old Macbook via 2007 and I'm trying to update my operating system (currently OS 10.5.8) to Snow Leopard, but the disk is not reading in the disk drive. And unfortunately, Snow Leopard is only on a DVD, it can't be downloaded.I figure I have 2 choices:
1) take it in and spend $49 to have them do diagnostics and then tell me they probably need to replace the superdrive
2) I could buy an external optical drive. But I would need to know which one would be compatable with my old *** Macbook.

Mar 12, 2012I have a late 2009 MacBook pro, running the latest version of Lion. Last week, I experienced a Kernel panic at start up, and was unable to launch the OS, even with the recovery boot. Starting in verbose told me that there was a sata issue. I opened the computer, replaced the internal hard drive with lion set upon it, and tried to start again, without any success. I bought a SATA-USB cable to plug my old hard drive. My computer is now running normally, but with the former internal hard drive plugged in USB.
Disk manager sees the new one and I can read data written upon it, but I can't write anything nor erase or partition it. So both the hard drives are OK (I tested them in a friend's MacBook pro and it worked), the computer seems OK too, because I'm running it presently, but any internal hard drive won't work. The cable that links the hard drive to the motherboard does not seem to be damaged, however, the status indicator light is not working since that time.

MacBook Pro :: Error In Reading TOTAL Hard Drive Space
Jul 1, 2014I just removed my Windows 7 using Bootcamp, since it wouldn't start up properly anymore. The thing is, there was this error in Bootcamp while uninstalling Windows. I wasn't able to read all of what the error was, so I removed the Windows again, or at least that's what the Mac seemed to be doing, until it got stuck somewhere for a suspiciously long time. I forced quit it, which might've been a bad move. So anyway, when I checked Bootcamp again, the option for removing Windows wasn't there anymore, so I assumed all is well. Until I saw the storage and Diskutility."
I did Verify Disk and Repair Disk before the last image. As you can see, the disk appears to be OK. But obviously it's not. The Windows 7 I had seems to have been uninstalled, since I can't find it in the selection part when pressing "alt" while turning it on.
What's happening to my hard drive?
OS X :: CD Drive Not Reading And Ejecting Disk
Nov 9, 2009I was trying to import a cd into my macbook pro this afternoon and it went in and clicked into place but then started making a huming sort of noise, but was you could hear it was not spinning, about 20 seconds later it ejected. I tried it multiple times and restarted my computer but nothing seemed to help. The disk drive isn't bent out of shape or anything and I've never had a problem with it until now.

May 16, 2012When I plug my mobile broadband device and looked to my hd's info, the size of the used area constantly rises. There is only 45 gb left on a 250 gb hard drive while i only filled 95 gb. I checked /var/log and nothing unusual 25 mb size. I used whatsize app to find where all that invisible data is but couldn'T manage. Whatsize says there is 45 gb left in the hard drive but also shows the sum of used 95 gb.

MacBook Pro :: External Hard Drive - Disk Utility Can't Repair Disk
Jun 27, 2014I have a Seagate 1 TB Backup Plus Drive which was working perfectly fine until I plugged it into a USB hub. It detected it while in the hub and I was able to get files off of it, but when I ejected it from the hub and put it back into the USB slot on the computer it was not detected by finder. It shows up in the disk utility and I clicked verify and repair and it says:
Verify and Repair volume “Seagate Backup Plus Drive”
Checking file system
Volume repair complete.
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
Is there any way to get this to work properly again? Or if not is there a way for me to recover my files on the external hard drive?
I have a Macbook PRO late 2011 running OS X Mavericks.

Sep 5, 2010For some reason my Lacie external drive that's hooked up to my imac is constantly being read for no reason. It's never idle and never rests until I eject it. I'm afraid the drive's gonna fail soon and all my work gone? Did a search but can't find anything online.

Aug 21, 2009I put it on Craig's list so wanted to wipe the drive and figure I'd play around with OS 9 a little just for fun. While in OS 9 it prompted me to upgrade the firmware on the DVD-ROM drive. I thought that sounded like a good idea since it makes some terrible noises when a disc is in... anyway, I did the firmware upgrade and everything went fine. That's the only real change I can think of that might have contributed to this new issue.Anyway, after that I put 10.3 on it again (I had 10.4 on it before) and it wouldn't sleep correctly. Everything looks like its going to sleep ok, then the hard drive spins up, then back down, over and over again endlessly.

Apr 11, 2010I am considering purchasing diskwarrior but want to make sure it can help my situation before I purchase it. My imac will not boot from the internal hard drive (Intel processor) When I use disk utility to try and repair the disk, I get error messages and it won't repair. I can see the HD but cannot repair it. When I connect using target mode with my mac book pro, the hard drive does not appear on my host (macbook pro) computer. I have reloaded OS X (Leopard) onto a firewire external drive and can boot my imac that way but I can not find my original internal Macintosh HD. Will disk warrior be able to help with this scenario. I would really like to access that internal Macintosh HD and retrieve my files.

Apr 24, 2012I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Studio FW800 external that has 5 partitions, connected to my 2011 iMac. I had help doing the partitions and don't really remember the reasoning, but one is just for my SuperDuper! backup, one is Miscellaneous, one for movie clips off my camcorder, one for misc scanned photo's and one for my genealogy research. I back up using Time Machine to a Time Capsule and also to this WD hard drive with SuperDuper!
Recently I'm getting a pop up message that "Mac OS X can't repair the disk "Genealogy"'. And it needs to be reformatted. It's become a read only disk. When I look in Disk Utility it shows all the partitions as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" EXCEPT for the one in question. I also noticed that there are a lot of files with "date created" being the same date in 1969! These files may be letters I've written or photo's I added to that partition within the last few years.
I think I have to completely reformat the entire external hard drive to repair this, but I want to make sure. Because it's going to be a major hassle backing it all up to another external (having to get one first) and then figuring out how to make the files that have turned "read only" in that one partition, back to their original state! Does this sound right, that I have to reformat the entire external hard drive? And how do I get the read-only files back to their original state.

Jan 19, 2010the past couple of days my new macbook Pro (only had it a couple of months) has been really slow to boot, with a grey progress bar that I have never seen before. I googled it, and you all know what i found.
So I ran the disk utility, and selected analyze or whatever the button is, and it said I should load it from the INstall DVD, as the disk needs repairing.
Guess what. The disk cannot be repaired.
An error message about expecting 31 files but only finding 30?
It recommends erasing the disk and reinstalling from scratch.
Now, as far as I can see, apart form the slow boot times, everything else still works. Does this mean that it is just a ticking time-bomb that will break any time, or is just a couple of corrupt files that don't matter?
This is really annoying, I love my Mac, but having to reinstall so soon after purchase?
Apologies if there any other posts on here already, it is late, I am stressed, and would like a nice person to help me out.
MacBook :: Won't Recognize New Hard Drive - Even In Disk Utility
Apr 13, 2010My macbook hard drive crashed, luckily I had just backed up everything. I went and bought a new 320 GB hard drive, I researched and I know it's compatible with my Macbook. I decided to install windows 7 on it first, but the windows 7 installer wouldn't recognize my hard drive. (For the record, my Matsushita superdrive will not read DVDs anymore, only CDs, so I created bootable copies of both my Mac OS X install disk and my Windows 7 install disk, and I've been using a bootable rEFIt CD to boot from my USB flash drive.)
So I booted up the Mac OS X Snow Leopard disk and started disk utility - it recognizes the rEFIt CD, it recognizes the flash drive, but no internal hard drive. The partitioning tool in rEFIt doesn't recognize it either, but I know it's seated correctly because I can hear/feel it booting up with the computer (if i remove the battery and boot with the computer plugged in). I also know it works correctly because I installed it in my girlfriends PC and it recognized it just fine, I even installed Windows 7 on it, hoping the macbook would boot from it.

Aug 2, 2010Just installed a new HDD into a macbook pro that was dropped. Seems fine, loads the disk and then says it can install the OS, i load up disk utility and theres no hard drive int he list just the optical drive and the DVD, its not the disk that came with the mac itself its either my proper retail one or the one that came with my personal older macbook which might be the issue. Ive taken apart and reconnected the HDD and all seems fine internally. Are there any issues that cause this except not using a full retail disk which im going to try later on, just wanted to rule everything else out.

Aug 31, 2010The HDD in my wife's black MacBook (2007, I think) won't boot up. I've run Disk Utility and have decided it's pretty much dead. I have a Carbon Copy backup, so the data is fine. I've tried replacing the drive twice now, and the MacBook simply won't "see" the new drives. When I install the drive, nothing shows up in Disk Utility (run either from the install disc or the Carbon Copy backup drive in a USB enclosure).
The new drives are formatted (I even copied the bootable backup to one of them), and the computer sees them just fine if I install them in a USB enclosure and hook them up that way. When I put them in the computer, though, no dice. Her old, corrupted HDD still showed up in Disk Utility when I reinstalled it, but the new drives don't.
MacBook Pro :: Hard Drive Disappears From Disk Utility Completely?
Dec 25, 2010I got a second hand macbook pro on tuesday, it is the 13" 2010 model and is two months old. However it keeps causing me all kinds of problems, and I am not sure if it is my fault, a hardware fault or something else. I'll describe what I've done to it; When I got it I wiped the hard drive and did a clean install of OSX, then I imported everything from my old mac through migration assistant. However when I then started using my new mac, the 'home' folder was a different name so some files didn't match up, like my dropbox account and some games. I don't know if this has caused other problems within the directories or anything like that.
It is usually fine for about 6 hours, it's pretty quick and I have been through disk utility in this time and the verify process has been ok. However after this time the it starts being really slow. Like I'm talking 10 - 15 minutes to open an application. Every time this happens I open disk utility to check on it, and it always needs to be repaired as there are folders and directories missing. However when I turn it off and go into disc utility through the install disc it doesn't let me repair it as the drive cannot be unmounted, but then the HD disappears from disk utility completely.
On top of this I tried to install XP through boot camp earlier, but the partition wouldn't format, so I went back through boot camp assistant and deleted the partition. However whenever I turn it on I have to hold down the command key and select the Macintosh HD, because if i don't it tries to boot into windows, even though the partition has been deleted and the HD merged back into the Mac HD. When I boot through the command key, the only option there is the Mac HD, so I don't know where it is getting windows from.
The battery is not what I expected in this thing either. I have put this on another post but I wanted to complain about it again. I have noticed that on a full charge i only get 6 - 7 hours browsing the internet, way off the 'approximately 10 hours'. When I go into istat menus apparently it has a cycle count of 68 and the health of the battery is 89%, which seems very low to me. Whenever I do manage to get it to turn on, it never remembers my settings for the back lit keyboard or the screen brightness. They are always on full whack even though I turn them down to half every time I use it.
Basically, on this fine christmas day (don't get me started on that, the dog got more presents than I did and now my mum is singing Susan Boyle at the top of her lungs) I was wondering if any of you could help me with these problems? I'm thinking I may just have to wipe the HD again and reimport everything manually but I really don't want to do that. I do love Apple Macs and I don't want to get rid of this thing, but it is driving me mental. I turned the Macbook Pro on when I started writing this on my old Macbook. It is now 8 minutes later and it has still not booted. It is just sat there looking all smug with the spinny thing below the apple on the grey screen.

And HD is still running quiet (no strange mechanical noises I'm accustomed to hearing prior to a failure). Nevertheless, I'm installing a new HD tomorrow and recloning it from a backup external drive (operating from external until then).

Jun 12, 2012I installed NTFS for Mac to read/write external hard disks that I shared between my Macs and PCs. It's doing find until recently after I upgrade my MacBook to Mac OS Lion.
It can still can detect certain external Hard Disk, but still cannot detect some external Hard Disk and Flash Drive even though it is supposed to be dual formatted.
