ITunes :: Music Sharing Vs Home Sharing?
Jul 4, 2012I am trying to set up my home network to have the iMac share its' media library via iTunes, and access that media on other devices in the home. I would like to use iTunes Music Sharing, which is a very simple setup on the iMac and doesn't require any Apple ID to be entered on the devices accessing the shared library. However, I have found that the iPhone and iPad will not even see the shared media library when the iMac is set up to share its' library.Â
Only when I enable Home Sharing on the iMac, and configure Home Sharing on the iPhone and iPad, do I see the shared library available on those devices.Â
I would like to allow other family members in the household to access the shared media library without requiring them to have my Apple ID and password. iTunes Music Sharing is supposed to allow this.Â
Does iTunes Music Sharing not work when trying to share to an iPhone or iPad?Â

OS X :: AFP Sharing (NAS Access) On MacBook
Jan 18, 2009I tried to access my NAS from my macbook today, using AFP. I believe it was partially working. On the mac side I didn't configure anything in particular. The NAS was setup with 3 AFP shares with unique names. When I opened the Finder on the mac, the NAS (FreeNAS) appeared. Clicking on the "freenas" brought up the three shares. I didn't specifically mount any shares, but obviously the mac picked them up because the unique names were there. As well, I was able to briefly browse the folders. The problem is that the connection to the shares does not last long.
Sometimes I can't even click on the NAS name and bring up the shares, I just get a never ending "connecting...." Even worse, once this has happened I am unable to do any further work with the network. Even web browsing using Safari ceases to work. Even worser worse, the mac will not reboot properly. I have to do a hard shutdown. For what it's worth, the same thing appears to happen when I try to mount a samba share such as smb://192.168.100.10. It may briefly connect but before too long Finder pretty much hangs, as well as the internet.

May 4, 2012I have a relatively new MacBook Air. In reviewing the sharing and permissions settings for the Macintosh HD and for user known as "everyone", I changed the setting from "ready only" to "no access" thinking that this would block access from other users (like other family members). Well, it did, but I'm part of "everyone" and now have no access to my Air. Â
I have tried rebooting and accessing Safe Mode (Command/Shift/V) and I can see the status information as the machine tries to lauch in Safe Mode, but then the screen turns white leaving me with no interface through which I can launch Finder and correct my stupid mistake.Â

On the bottom where it says 'you have custom access' under sharing and permissions I removed myself (clicked the little minus sign). Now I can't open anything and the desktop is complete empty. May 22, 2009I'm having trouble accessing files and moving folders on a shared drive. When I try to open or move a file, it says "The document "X" could not be opened. You do not have appropriate access privileges. To view or change access privileges, select the item in Finder and choose File > Get Info." and when I try to move a folder, it says "This folder cannot be moved as you do not have access to some or all of the items." The IT (who is not trained to deal with macs) says I have full permissions for our shared drive and that the problem is with my computer. So I followed the instructions in the warning box.
However, in the Get Info for the file, it says under Sharing & Permissions "You can read and write". In my System Preferences, both my user accounts have the administrator access box checked. In the Help section, it gives instructions along the lines of "in the Sharing & Permissions section, click the lock next to your name to change permissions" and also "in the action (gear) section, select the option for permissions that you want". Trouble is, there's no name and no lock in my Sharing & Permissions box. There's also no 'action (gear)' option anywhere. When I click on the triangle next to Sharing & Permissions, it literally just says 'You can read and write'. There's no other option or information.

So I linked my windows itunes library folder to my Macintosh HD drive and located my user account, then my music folder. It added all the music files and I can play them, and I don't know yet when I add files if it will add them to both the library's. So I was just wondering if this is safe or something? Since they both have different filesystems FAT and NTFS.

Dec 27, 2010I have a very particular issue that I am trying to find the best way to manage through. I have two computers. An iMac connected wirelessly and a Hackintosh connected wired. The Hackintosh is my hometheater PC connected to my TV. My iMac is in the bedroom and is home to all my pictures and music and other stuff we share as a family. After getting my AppleTV2, I converted all my movies and tvshows to Mv4, which are all stored on a separate media server in the closet. The iTunes on the hackintosh "houses" all the video media where I have imported all the video media on the media server but the links are all pointing to the media server - iTunes is not set to copy the media when imported. It allows me to access all of the video media on the appleTV2.
In the ATV2, to access the music and photos, the family has to switch from using the Hackintosh and choose the iMac computer. This is not ideal. The preferable option would be to have one iTunes library to manage all the media so you do not have to back out of one computer into the other. However, I have not found a good way to share just the music portion of my iTunes library from the iMac to the Hackintosh. I do not want the bedroom imac to manage all the media since its not always on and its wireless which creates hiccups on the high def video files. I first tried mounting the iMac iTunes music folder on the network, importing the music into the Hackintosh (creating links back to imac iTunes music folder).
This works but the problem is keeping it up to date after the initial import. I use Hazel and creating a script to basically watch the music folder for newly added or modified files and import those into iTunes. The problem is if I imoprt an updated file that already exists in the Library it creates a duplicate. Same problem if the music is stored on a NAS. I have tried the trick of moving everything to the server and sharing the iTunes ITL files but this does not allow you to have both iTunes libraries open at the same time. I haven't seen anyone who has this particular issue where they want to keep a "portion" of their iTunes libraries in sync.

May 23, 2010I have iTunes 9.1.1.12 on my PC and iMac. I used to be able to copy songs from one library to the other via the iTunes sharing option. They are both on the same account with Apple, but now I cannot copy. When I drag and drop, nothing happens. I can't find another way to do it other than using an external source to copy, but I'd like to do it within iTunes!
Has this option been turned off in the latest release? The only thing I can think of besides upgrading iTunes to the latest release is that I was at 5 computers authorized, so I deauthorized all of them, and re-authorized the two computers that I'm using in this scenario.

Mac Pro :: Topic : Cinema Display Cuts Out And Can't Access With Screen Sharing?
Feb 19, 2008A weird thing has started happening to my Mac Pro today. After using it for a few minutes the cinema display it is attached to on the Mac Pro just goes black. The Mac Pro is clearly still on - the light is on and i can hear the fans. The Mac Pro shows up on my local network and i can connect to it and access files from my Macbook, but screen sharing doesn't work (i just get the message 'contacting mac pro' and nothing else) and i can't connect to shared iTunes library either, which makes me think it is not just a display issue. I cannot wake the computer with the mouse or keyboard, which makes me think it isn't just a sleep issue. All i can do is physically turn the Mac Pro off, start it up and it will start up successfully and then work for a few more minutes before i get the same problem. I have reset the PRAM and SMC and still have the same problems. Can anyone suggest anything else i can try?
I should mention that i have another problem with the Mac Pro in that it has been spontaneously waking up from sleep and starting up from shutdown, and i still haven't resolved this. I don't know if it is connected to the above issue.

Jul 13, 2010The setup: Three computers, one running Windows XP SP3, SL 10.6.4 and L 10.5.8. All three are running iTunes 9.2. The windows xp box is the "server" of the iTunes main library. This is where it is strange. I can see all three library's (depending on which computer I am on). I can see the shared library's and they all have the little house with the music note. The problem is I can't share any music from one account to the other?
If I open up one of the shared library's and try to drag and drop some music into it, the files will not drop. Doesn't matter what computer I am on. I have tried the "automatically add to library" folder and that works about 50% of the time. It will send files over but a good majority of the time it will not copy to all shared library's. I have checked the router settings and also made sure all the settings from within iTunes is correct. I have also made sure all of the accounts are logged into the same iTunes account etc. But nothing seems to be working.
