MacBook Air :: Unused Rev B For 500?
Jul 15, 2010
I could get a Macbook Air Rev B with 1,86Ghz, GeForce9400 and 120 HDD (4200rpm) for about 500€. It has some external scratches and discoloration, but other than that it works fine and is unused.. it is an original apple product with some product external faults, that's why it's so cheap. The scratches don't bother me at all, I don't need my laptop to look brand new, it has to get the job done.. Actually I'm fine the machine in my sig, although I'd love to have a lighter laptop and backlit keyboard + a nicer screen, but I just got this offer and began to wonder if it would fit my needs... Although I'm studying computer science, I'm not doing intense processing nor multimedia work. The programs I use on a regular basis:
- Xcode
- Eclipse
- Adobe Acrobat 9
- Omni Graffle
- Omni Focus
- RemoteDesktop
- TexWorks
- Skype
- Adium
- Safari, Mail, iTunes, iCal etc.
- iWork apps
some other apps too, but just occasionally... My main concern is obviously the 2 GB RAM.. I have 3GB DDR2 RAM 667Mhz right now.. How much "worse" will it get with the 2GB DDR3 RAM with 1066Mhz? The disk space is not that big of an issue to me... so, what do you guys think? I would try to sell my Macbook for some € too and of course, sooner or later, replace the awful HDD with a SSD...

Looking at my system profiler, while there is nothing attached to it, it does report the presence of a SATA port. Is that correct? Can it ever be used with another internal drive?

I replaced the 2600 XT that came in my mac pro with a 3870 HD. But I feel like the 2600 XT is being wasted just sitting on its own gathering dust. I was thinking about putting it in a Hackintosh, or just a new PC with Windows 7. Does a mac video card work in a PC?

I know back in old days when i used Windows there were many tips how to "speed up" windoze, by disabling unused services that take up time loading at start up and generally use cpu in the background. Does anybody know of a compilation-list-site and how to disable unused OS-X services?

I just got my new Mac Pro and I'm trying to install some extra drives to it. I've read about the unused SATA ports on the motherboard but I can't seem to find them. I tried searching but I had no luck. Anyone know where they are and how I can access them easily?

I do not have any programs like App Zapper. I may have deleted one or two apps by dragging them to the trash. Is there a program that seeks out unused files that may have been associated with those apps. I do not remember which apps they were though.

I have an older Mac Pro with 16 GBs of RAM and I'm trying to get Lightroom 3 to stop running ridicualously slow. I've checked the activity monitor and with just a browser & LR3 running I have just over 10 GBs of Free memory. LR3 is using 1.72 GBs. Back in the day you could allocate RAM to a program like photoshop so it wasn't such a dog. Is there anyway to do this in MAC OS X?

I purchased an icloud storage upgrade in anticipation of using it to manage my apple email across two systems - desktop and laptop. Teh desktop is snow leopard the laptop testing lion. Unfortunately the chance in how apple manages email proved a showstopper and I am NOT prepared to upgrade my desktop to lion - yet - as I have key applications that would require additional upgrades and purchases I dont want to make yet. So - how do I get the upgrade (as yet unused) cancelled and refunded. In speaking with support it seems the downgrade options only apply AFTER the annual period has elapsed.

PowerBook G4 Ti:Where can one look up the meaning of diagnostics codes? HDD diagnostics error code: ata1/6/3 HD:2,0 What does a single blinking LED on the battery mean? AppleCare does not show the HDD, chance it is ok but not connected? A friend's system wouldn't start up, he said I could take a look, asking me to recover some family photos from his Hard Disk Drive. This machine had not been used for months. So far I have uncovered two issues and would be grateful to receive further guidance here to get this machine up and going.
service history: 3/10/2005 = repaired directory errors, charged clock battery, installed optical drive. action: Remove PRAM battery and it powers up. I like to tinker, and I'm recently out of work, stumbled upon a place with step by step instructions to take apart at <http://homepage.mac.com/sysop/PhotoAlbum13.html>. Followed those steps and removed the persistent RAM (PRAM) battery, put it all back together ( except for a few screws, oops! ) and it powers up, and seems to be charging the battery as an LED lights up now. Took it apart again and checked Hard Disk Drive connections, appears ok. Put the PRAM battery back in ( battery shows: 616-0144-A, match to slide 35 ) and now the system boots ok. Maybe resetting the connections got things going, maybe the battery needed a kick, who knows............

I have old large projects with a lot of b roll I will not use again and want to delete each unused clip. What is the best way to delete these safely. I can go into the library, show package contents and delete the clips there, but will that upset the library. And is there a way to delete just the parts of the clips that are unused? So If I have a 30s clip, have used 5s and want to delete the rest of the clip around the 5s, is that possible? Trying to recover some drive space to save buying a new media drive....

I downloaded a program that cleans unused files and unneeded files. Apparently it erased some kind of startup files or something cause I shut the computer down one night and the next morning I went to turn it on and it just goes to the blue screen and the loading icon comes on for 5 minutes. It is a Macbook and after sitting there for 5 minutes it just shuts down and tries to start up again. I don't know what I have to do to restore it cause it removed my thingy called "Matt" which is I guess my hard drive name. I'm not every good with computers so I dont know all the names for things.

I've just used my time machine to migrate my old macbook's contents to my brand new macbook air. While I was watching it restore 803,678 files to the new machine, I was wondering how many of them are unused applications. I've stupidly never set up separate user accounts before this, and I'm sure there are any number of applications that were placed on my old machine by my kids, my husband, and various visitors to our house. Since I'm using time machine instead of starting fresh, I know those have been transferred to the new machine. I've never worried too much about this situation before now, as about every three years I've bought a new machine, migrated the files I need to the new machine, wiped the old one clean, and handed it down to one or the other of my kids.
But now I'm realizing that with time machine, everything on my computer is now forever...everything anyone has ever put on it has been transferred to time machine and now to my new machine. I don't want to be operating with years-old versions of kid's games and apps on every machine I set up from now on for the rest of my life. Is there anything out there that specifically looks for stuff that hasn't been used for a specified number of years and asks something like, "Barney & Friends was installed 1/16/2003 and was last used 10/18/2005. Delete Barney & Friends and all associated files, yes or no?"

I am obsessed with Mac Minis, and have bought at least one of every generation. Now that I bought a couple of the newest ones to be my new HTPCs, I have a bunch of unused ones. I do some web design and 3D work as a hobby. I bought OSX Server 10pack and a 10.5 Family Pack. I want to cluster them in some way with X-Grid and also use one as a media server. Here is my question: Should I install OSX Server on all of them? Should I only put it on 1 as a main server? Should I use my fastest one (1.83 Intel) or my slowest (original G4 of some speed) as the server? How would you set this up? They will all be headless and controlled remotely.

So last December my laptop got smashed and everything works except for the backlit screen. In fact I can still use this laptop it is just extremely hard since the screen does not light up. The person that smashed it ended up buying me a new laptop so I have this beat up (and I mean the shell is destroyed) laptop with quite a lot of functioning parts.
Now a few weeks ago my girlfriends Grandad spilled a beer on his brand new 2010 Macbook. The logic board is shot so it is almost cheaper for him to buy a brand new laptop.
Would it be possible for me to take the logic board out of my 2008 Black Macbook and put it into his 2010 White Macbook?

By far the most interesting benchmark trend coming out of the latest Macbook Air tests is that of the 320M GPU - is this thing somehow clocked differently than in the Macbook/Macbook Pro?
From:
[URL]
The latest Macbook Pro 13" 2.4 Ghz gets 33 FPS in Call of Duty 4, whereas the Macbook Air 13" (using the same 320M GPU) gets 40 FPS. Even the 1.4Ghz 11" gets 37! So obviously we're not talking about a CPU limited game - the only explanation then is that the GPU in the Macbook Air is clocked differently than in the 13" Macbook Pro, no?
From:
[URL]
Again the Macbook Air clocked at 2.13 ghz is beating the 2.4 Ghz Macbook Pro in World of Warcraft and Portal! And in WOW the 11" 1.4ghz still manages to beat the 2.4 Ghz 13" Macbook Pro.
Anyone have any additional insight into this? Anand did a terrible job of testing these for gaming performance, unfortunately, so he may not have even noticed this trend.

I have a 2008 13" white, plastic MacBook. Its a bit slow, but adequate. Thinking of selling it and paying the difference to get the 11" MacBook Air. I've heard it is similar in speed and has the same processor.
The main problem I have with my current MacBook is that its heavy - I need something lightweight to easily carry to school and class for note-taking and such.
How is the Air better or worse, and would I be losing anything significantly by replacing the 08 plastic MB with a MBA?

I just upgraded my daughter from last year's MacBook to a new 2009 MacBook Pro (my mother will get her old one) by cloning the drive using SuperDuper. Everything works fine except it doesn't detect the audio hardware in the OS. I see that the new macbook pro has different audio hardware according to system profiler. Is there a way to copy the driver off the install DVD or should I just go ahead and reinstall everything.

I just bought a macbook as a replace for my five year old iBook. I was planning on purchasing a second power adapter. I like the size and more rugged connector on the Macbook Air power adapter.
I have searched around and it sounds like the Air adapter will work with a MacBook but I am not completely convinced. I understand that this adapter will only charge or power the unit but not both.
Has anyone tried their Air adapter on a MacBook? Could an Air owner tell me the voltage and current rating (outputs) on their adapter?

I wanted to know if I can replace the upper case of a Core Duo white macbook with that of a Core 2 Duo black macbook? The white one has the distinctive yellowing of the rev A macbooks, so i'd like to make it better whilst making a black/white frankenMac.
If not, can I at least replace the airport card?

I'm putting a computer in my kitchen that anybody in the house can use (kids & parents). It will be hooked up to a 24" LCD and also act as a small file server, dvd player and perhaps eyetv dvr.
I like the mini because it is small (can hide in the cabinet where spills won't get it), is cheap and uses only 13W when idle. But when I think down the road, 4 year old laptops seem a lot more useful than 4 year old mac minis. So I'm a bit torn.
So my questions are:
- Does anybody know how much power the macbook uses when "idle" (just running finder).
- Can the macbook be run with the lid closed? (I know old powerbooks used to vent hot air through the keyboard.)
(Then again, I have the computer in the kitchen so I can watch my kids on the computer. In 4 years they'll be 5 years old and probably want a laptop they could have in their own room - exactly what I want to avoid. And I'll probably upgrade my macbook pro by then anyway.)

I have a late 2009, white unibody MacBook which is 7 months old, and I have been noticing that the battery life is getting less and less, and am rather confused.I reset the SMC as per Apple instructions, and then followed the battery calibrating guide to the letter from apple.com, and tonight it seems to have lasted... 3.5 hrs! Hardly the quoted 7 hours that Apple spec, and I am simply doing light web browsing, nothing else.Am I doing something wrong? The machine sits connected to magsafe 90% of the time, but I cannot envisage that would cause any problem, as it knows when it is charged, so afaik no more current can get to the battery to damage it
