MacBook Pro :: Caps Lock Key Won't Work / Substitute For Caps Lock?

Feb 4, 2008

I recently bought a replacement keyboard on ebay for my MBP and just installed it. It's been about a week, and just today, I noticed the capslock key doesn't work.. I'm not sure if it has been this way, or if it recently just stopped. The light doesn't come on at all.

I was curious if this was a common problem? If not, is their anything I can do as a substitute for caps lock? Another key perhaps? Or, a button on the task bar or something?

OS X :: Won't Work With Kernal Panic / No Safe Mode And Target Disk Mode

Jul 6, 2010

I have a 15" mbp with 10.6 Intel core duo, 4gb ram with a boot camp and ubuntu partition through parallels. The other day I was installing xcode from apple's website, which failed 3 times after downloading saying the package couldn't be expanded. I left my computer for a while and came back where i then had to log in again. it rejected my password numerous time (i'm positive it was correct). when i restarted my computer i got a kernal panic screen when the apple logo came up. it told me to restart the computer which i did. didn't work. i restarted with the osx cd to use the disk utility. when it checked the drive it found a bunch of errors, which i then tried to correct. it went for a couple minutes then told me they couldn't be fixed and i should try to back up my data and reinstall osx. i don't know how to back up my hard drive when i can't log into my account. i've tried to boot in target disk mode and copy some files that way, but the only disk the other computer sees is my windows partition- no mac partition.

i've also tried these, none of these have worked: restarting in safe mode resetting the ram and pram booting with different sticks of ram all result in a kernal panic.

my windows partition still works fine though (as much as i hate to say it) the only things I really care about on my computer are my files from school and my itunes library. is there any way i can get these files off my computer?

MacBook Pro :: Won't Work / Automatically Boots To Safe Mode

Sep 3, 2010

Today, my Macbook Pro 15" started to automatically boot up in Safe Boot / Safe Mode. So every time I boot up, I have to wait 5-10 minutes and stuff. It's not normal.

I tried: Restarting, Shutting down and booting.

Resetting PRAM, NVRAM

Verifying and repairing Hard Disk in Disk Utility (it fails). Tried in Mac OS and OS Installation Disk. etc. I got this computer 6 days ago, and there is already this problem. Is there a way without reinstalling the OS? I have Windows installed on it for gaming, but I don't see anything else that could be causing the problem.

MacBook Pro :: Shuts Down After Login And Safe Mode Does Not Work

Dec 3, 2014

My MBP (2012 or 2013 not sure which!) is having an issue. When I try to login, my password is accepted and then a progress bar appears. After a quarter load, my mac turns off. Unfortunately safe mode (holding shift) does not work. I have tried smc and pvram resets and repairing through disk utility. None of this has worked...

I'm running yosemite. The last thing I did before logging off is installing divx web player.

MacBook :: Shift While Caps Lock On

if caps lock is off, shift of course makes the letter you hit capital. However, if caps lock is on, and you hit shift, the letter is capital, not lowercase. In Windows it would be lowercase. Is my MacBook acting how is should?

MacBook :: Caps Lock Key Not Sensitive

Jan 5, 2009

I just got a new aluminum macbook, and the only thing that seems like a problem is the caps lock key is not sensitive like the rest of the keys. I tap it like every other key and it usually takes 2-3 or more times before it changes. Is there really anything to do? I hate to take it back for something so trivial. But I am afraid it will bother me more and more.

MacBook Pro :: Unresponsive Caps Lock Key On New

Apr 2, 2010

I got a new Macbook Pro in December and straight away I noticed I have to really jab at the Caps Lock key to activate it, sometimes several times. Pressing it on the left hand side (where my finger naturally reaches to) almost never works. Anyone else have this? Is it a known problem? Would Apple be likely to be able to sort it out if I took it to a store, or am I wasting my time?

MacBook Pro :: Caps Lock Key Popped Off

Jun 6, 2010

So I basically just opened my MacBook Pro from when it was charging and the Caps Lock key randomly popped off. It's a brand new i5 15'' HR AG model, really no excuse for that to happen. The closest Apple Store is about 40 miles away, so if you can tell me how to put the Caps Lock key back on myself I would really appreciate it. I tried just putting the bars through the circles and pressing down and it just falls back off immediately, doesn't click on.

MacBook :: Is Normal For CAPS LOCK Key To Be Unresponsive

Apr 25, 2009

Alright, well, my caps lock key on my new Macbook has been acting up. It's very unresponsive. I Googled this, and all I found were a few problems with caps lock being inverted. Well my problem is this; I push caps lock, and quite often it doesn't turn on. I need to give it a fairly firm push for it to turn on, however I don't tend to push it hard enough when I'm typing fast. Is this a normal problem or should I have it looked at? OS X :: I5 MacBook Pro - Press Caps Lock Key Several Times Before It Actually Comes On

Aug 4, 2010

So I got my Core i5 2.53 GHz MacBook Pro back in April when they came out, and it has had some problems. All the the issues have been minor, but still annoying. First of all, I get the scroll wheel all of the time. Way more than a new computer should. Also, I have to press the Caps Lock key several times before it actually comes on. In addition, often times when I open iTunes, it just bounces for a long time until I have no choice but to force quit. After a few attempts it opens, but I feel like it shouldn't do this. Also, when I put headphones in the head phone jack, they don't work right away. Either they don't work at all and I have to pull them out and try again, or it takes several seconds to come on. Again, these are minor issues, but I still don't like it.

MacBook Air :: Caps Lock And Mouse Button Not Working?

Aug 21, 2008

I've had my MBA 1.8 since the beginning. Just recently my my caps lock and mouse pad button doesn't work:

1. Caps lock
It technically does work, but I have to press the dang thing like 4 or 5 times until the green dot lights up on it

2. Mouse pad button
This also technically does work, but not properly. It is currently semi-broke. It's hard for me to explain in words. So I'll will try my best here. It's almost like a teeter-totter, I.E. the bar is never level. One side is always raised and the other is always lowered. If I click on the raised part of the mouse pad, it will make a clicking sound

I do not currently have apple care, but still have some time left to purchase it.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: MBP Doesn't Boot Into Safe Mode And Doesn't Wake Up "normally"

Feb 22, 2012

I am using a 15" MacBook Pro Santa Rosa (mid 2007), 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 6 GB memory, with a 240GB OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD (15 months old). Lion 10.7.3. Computer doesn't boot into Safe Mode AND also if it "goes to sleep by itself" (I don't touch it for a while, then it falls asleep) after some time when I try to wake it up I get the Spinning Ball of Death or a black screen and the only thing I can do is press the power button for some seconds to power off. It wakes up OK if I, either close the lid or Apple icon-> Sleep.

WHEN TRY TO BOOT INTO SAFE MODE: Immediately after the startup chime I press the Shift key, after 2-3 seconds get the login window, key in my password. Instead of logging in, it goes to a screen with the Apple icon, underneath it, the Apple spinning gear and underneath that a loading bar.  After quite some time the loading bar disappears, the gear goes on spinning for a LONG time, then black screen, startup chime again and login window. Then, when I key in my password, it just logs in as usual, no safe mode.

I tried to write in Terminal “sudo nvram boot-args="-x"”, BIG mistake! It got my computer into a  loop of those screens. I don’t exactly remember what eventually got me out of this loop (I think I booted from a clone, then started with the Lion CD and wrote back “sudo nvram boot-args=""” in Terminal.  Also set up an additional administrator account but all was the same. Tried verify/repair disk, everything OK. Eventually I erased completely the HD (not Recovery HD) reinstalled Tiger, Snow Leopard and Lion again, downloaded all applications/software/programs I had, from scratch and only copied the data from a backup, being sure that after that all problems will be over, but... everything like it was, no "normal sleeping" and no SM booting.

OS X :: Won't Work To Use Safe Mode For Maintenance

Oct 8, 2010

I have a 21.5 inch iMac and am running Snow Leopard. I am familiar with Safe Mode and I understand that it does a disk check and repair and also does some cache clearing during a startup process that allows the user to startup into a system where certain kernel extensions, etc, are disabled to allow for trouble shooting. Then the user can do a restart and end up back in normal mode.

My question is whether starting up into Safe Mode could prove beneficial as some sort of routine maintenance?

OS X :: Won't Work With Start Up In Safe Mode

Feb 12, 2008

Leopoard 10.5.2 - Quad Core Mac Pro.

I'm trying to start up in safe mode, per a recommendation from Objective Development, for a Little Snitch upgrade. I'm following these steps perfectly, and I see no indication that I'm running in safe mode. Of course, I've never seen safe mode, so I'm not sure what it looks like, but I'm guessing I ain't in it because I never see the "Safe boot at the login window".

Quote:

To start up into Safe Mode, do this:

1. Be sure the computer is shut down.

2. Press the power button.

3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key (the Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before).

4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and the spinning gear. Please be patient, booting in Safe Mode may take some while.

During the startup you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically.

OS X :: Won't Work With Starting In Safe Mode

Jun 11, 2008

I started (because I wanted to) my MBA into safe mode. Just hadn't tried it before. It took, what seemed, an inordinate amount of time to boot.

I pressed the shift ket at the BONG and released at the spinning gear screen. Is this normal? Does OS X perform disc read/write, verification, cache handling, etc. that causes the lengthy boot.
