MacBook Air :: Finding Essential Software?
Apr 12, 2008
I just found a pretty cool and super easy way to access my main iTunes library on my iMac through WIFI on the Air when I'm out of my network. Install simplifymedia on the Air and your main computer and share with yourself.

I'm a switcher and a Mac newbie. This is my 1st post on the forum and I plan on buying a IMac 24" soon. which programs are a must have for Mac owners. I already have a few such as AppZapper, Adium, Stuffit, Mactheripper, Toast and Quicksilver. I already have Photoshop CS2 through my job and I've been looking at Aperture and Final Cut for video editing. My primary purpose is graphics/digital photography and later videography but I'm also looking for everyday Mac software.

Whatever your situation is, if you need to test your RAM, Memtest OS X is the best tool for the job for your Mac. Yes, there's Memtest86+ - I always use that for all the PCs I own. However, there's a bug in Memtest86+ where it could give false positives on EFI machines (which all Intel Macs are).
Memtest, by the way, is open source. So why, then, do you have to pay to download it? You have to pay to download both the binary and the source. I believe this violates the GPL, which Memtest OS X, and Memtest before it, are released under.
So I'm attaching Memtest right here in this thread. Now you can download it for free, without having to pay. Unfortunately, I don't have the source .

I just purchased my 2.66 15" uMBP today and it's been a few months since I've owned a Mac and I forgot all of the old applications I had on it. I've currently downloaded Firefox and VLC but are there other apps that you can't simply do without? Also, is there a Mac application that can play FLAC music files?

What are some "essential" applications I need?
I bought iWorks '09 and downloaded Little Snitch to monitor network activity. The laptop itself comes with iLife '09.
What are other programs I must have, or should get, or just whatever? Freeware or shareware, doesn't matter.

I have a MPB 15" bought on the very day of release. I am now using it to edit photos for selling to various publishers. Do I need to get a monitor calibrator like the Spyder3 Pro?
I went to this link to perform 'by eye' checks on my screen:
[URL]
my monitor is uncalibrated, yet it passed the tests with the following scores:
white test: 253 is distinguishable from white
black test: 7 is distinguishable from black
hue test: the two samples are clearly distinguishable
gamma: standing back the middle grey matches the outside gray
These tests were seemingly meant to show how bad an uncalibrated monitor would fare. However it came out very well.

What I mean by essentials are things to get for my MacBook Pro that I should definitely get now. Obviously, I would get a sleeve and possible bag for it but anything specific that is a definite buy.I am getting a 24" monitor to go with this as well so I am obviously planning on purchasing the keyboard and mouse and one of the writing pads like Bamboo.

A wonderful Macbook Air has been recenly given to me as a present, but I have an obsession: I have read somewhere that the keyboard is set into the upper case, so that is impossible to replace it without spending half of the money this computer costs.generally i hate to exaggerate with protections, but I just wondering what is the normal time of usury of the keyboard (supposed in a daliy usage..)..Does it wear out prematurely before the other components of the computer, or it will be ruined when my Macbook is a rattletrap? In other words: shall I buy a cheap chinese keboard cover using it from time to time or a more expensive one (such as Moshi or iSkin) for an every-day usage?

I have a 2008 5th generation black macbook. It's a good 4 years old, so I figured I'd wipe my computer all together and reinstall os x. Once I did, everything is working fine until I do the software updates. Safari even looks like it's from 2008 lol. The issue is, it downloads the updates fine, but once it restarts and begins the actual install, it gets to the point where it's "Configuring update" and completely stops in it's tracks. I've tried letting it do its thing and walked away, because maybe it would actually take a while but no, the blue progress bar is in the same exact point. So I'm stuck with leopard 10.5.2
Info:MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

tly in the process of buying a mac, and I just wanted to know if there are any accessories out there that I should know of, but don't.
The mac I'm buying is either the new MBA 13 with 2.13 GHz and 4 Gb (I have to consider if I want to use so much on a computer) or a base MBP 13.

I have a WD MyBook Essential connected to Airport Extreme (Simultaneous mode). The problem is that my disk remains always on, even at night when my MBP is shut down. How can i put it to sleep mode when not in use for a specific interval? The HDD when connected by USB directly to MBP supports this feature.

I've been trying for 3 days to get a WD My Passport Essential Portable hard drive to work. I've done everything I can think of: change the format, create separate partitions, everything.
More info:
PowerBook G4 - 1GB RAM, 80GB hard drive, 1.25ghz processor
External Hard Drive - 250GB, USB 2.0 interface, USB powered, 5400 rpm.
I'm about to throw this friggin' thing out the window if I can't get it to work.

I have a 1TB western Digital MyBook essential that I have partitioned into 2 drives. One for time machine and one for data storage.
At the moment i have a very old 802.11b access point connected to my cable (Virgin Media - UK) modem.
I'm looking to buy the new Airport Extreme to make use of the faster speeds and also the USB disk sharing feature. I have 1 macbook and 1 XP laptop that will need to access the mybook over the WIFI.
My questions:
1) Is this setup reliable? or am i going to have trouble accessing the disk and have to keep resetting the AE
2) Is backing up to time machine viable over the wireless? its only backing up my system partition which at the moment is only 20GB.
3) Will the Airport Extreme automatically spin down the WD MyBook when not in use?
4) Can you see any problems with any of the above!

Well the time has come to change the Hard Drive in my late 2009 MAcbook. Seems that 250GB got filled up much faster then I expected and I'm left with only 40 GB or so. With that I'd like to swap out to old drive for either a 320 or 500 GB one. but I"m not sure exactly which drive to buy and what exactly will fit. The advice from the members of this forum has been invaluable to me in the past so here I am again. What would you all recommend?

have any macbook air owners here found that 2GB ram is inadequate for their needs?I'm thinking it should be fine for me now, but i'm just worried say 2 years down the road if the 2GB ram will be enough, since ram is not upgradeable on the MBA.
i know the MBA is the machine I want, but i'm afraid of spending 2500 on a notebook which isn't very futureproof.

I am thinking about buying a SSD to install in my late 2008 aluminum macbook. Specs are 6GB of ram, 2.4 GHZ processor, and the standard 250GB hard drive which I believe is 5400 RPMs. So my question is, is it worth it? Will I see that much of a performance improvement? I don't reboot that often. I currently am using 92GB of my 250GB hard drive. So I would probably only need like a 160GB or 200GB SSD. Also if I do get one which one would be a good one to get. What should I look for in features.

I've had my 2010 Macbook since it launched and this thing just attracts grime and scratches. I literally left my Macbook on my desk for a day and all of a sudden it has two jagged scratches near the apple just by sitting on desk!
Now after that happened, I bought a Caselogic sleeve to protect it when not in use but now I have a green stain near the power indicator on the side of the palm rest. I tried cleaning it off with soap and water, it didn't work.
Then I googled it and I heard toothpaste might take out stains, so I tried that and it came off now but then it returned a couple of days later when I wasn't using the sleeve, so I figured it's not the problem. Cleaned it again with toothpaste and now there's a just a faint green stain I just can't get rid of.

I've been using a PC all my life. I currently have a 5 year old Dell 3100 desktop. I've decided to make the switch to a Mac. I have a lot of problems with my current computer, but it's 5 years old so it's expected I guess.
I'm pretty much decided on the Macbook Pro 13 inch model. I'm not a "hardcore professional" computer user, but more of a personal user. Here are some of my concerns:
1. I'm leaning towards the 2.4 Ghz model. The upgrade to a 2.66Ghz with an extra 50 Gb hard-drive is several hundred $$$ more expensive. Do you guys think the added $$ is worth the little extra processor speed and hard-drive size for a non-professional user?
2. Some people are telling me to wait for the 2011 Macbook Pro to be released. Obviously nobody knows exactly when that will be. I can wait a few months, but I'm not sure how much would change. Some people seem to think the processor on the 13' model is "outdated" and needs an i5 or i7. 2011 is just around the corner, so perhaps it might be worth "waiting" to see what upgrades come available.

I have a 2.4GHz MBP, 4GB RAM, 320M, 500GB HDD. This is my main to-go machine, as well as my clamshell with my ACD. I am planning on ordering 2 updates for the machine (Already ordered the first one, actually)
1. 500GB 7200.4 RPM Seagate w/16MB Cache.
2. 8GB OWC RAM upgrade.
I hear both of these are ridiculously easy upgrades to do, and this also allows me to upgrade my PS3 slim's HDD to 500GB!
Do you guys think this is a worthwhile upgrade for someone who writes code in XCode?
Also, does anyone know how to back up my iWeb site so I don't have to remake it when I format?

So I finally made a choice and have decided I'll go ahead and get the 13' MBP to tide me over till I get my iMac and then use it as my portable.
I've been looking into some upgrades I could do though, looking to stay below 200$. I'm fairly sure I could do all of these fairly easily, especially with all the how to guides online, but are there any caveats that perhaps you more seasoned Mac upgradees would know?
[URL]
I'm thinking about putting this HDD from OWC into it in order to upgrade to 7200 rpm and also triple the storage capacity. (For less than Apple's 500gb 5400 rpm HDD) I would keep the other HDD to switch back into the MBP incase I ever need to send it to Apple -- will there be any problems with this configuration?
And then I'll probably upgrade the RAM to 6gb. But there shouldn't be any problems with that, unless having a 2gb and 4gb stick together will create problems.
I may get a very small SSD to boot from somewhere down the line...But I'll probably cross that road whenever I decide to sell this model and buy a new MBP. I don't want to spend too much on an outgoing processor.
