Ever since 10.6 my MBA has shut down in seconds, however this afternoon its now taking over a minute - can anyone shed any light as to why?
I've attached the log for a shutdown from button pressed to actual power off if anyone could point anything out...
My MacBook Pro (Mac Os X.7.4) is very slow for shutting down.

I've switched to mac around December and everything was working so fine till 5 days ago. First I can say I have the 24'' 3.06 processor 4 gb of ram and 500 gb hdd from which 40 gb free space.
5 days ago I've noticed that when I was watching movies with vlc the program was pausing, chocking and I was soLving the issue by ff a few seconds. The next couple of days was the same and I've noticed as well that mac os x v.10.5.7 was loading slower and slower. Last night I've restarted and the startup screen came up with the apple logo and the little dots circle that was showing it's loading. Waited more than one hour and nothing happened. Restarted with the mac os install disc and went to disk utility. Done the disk verify - all ok, no problems. Did the permissions verify and found some of them but after I did the repair permissions I did another verify and was finding the same problems. Anyway shut down everything got upset. Restarted this morning and I took like 10 min to load up and finally the icons showing up. But now evrything I do the beachball is keep spinning and when it stop and I try to click something it's spinning again. For ex I've deleted an icon from dock in 3 min, i've openned a finder window in 5 min, I'm trying to install onyx.dmg and I've clicked like 10 min ago and it's still loading. (( Btw I have the windows as well in another partition and everything is working fine there as it supossed to work. Was thinking to reinstall mac os from the disk but I don't have anything backed up! On the cd install says that I can reinstall mac os as duplicate and will put the old one in a separate folder or something but I still don't know if will erase all my data.
My Mac Pro (2008, 8-core, 10GB, 2x1TB RAID 0) system takes a long time to shutdown or restart. Typically over a minute. I didn't think this was so bad (though I think when I first got the system is shutdown must more quickly) until I got a MacBook and it shuts down in around 10 seconds. I was wondering if the slow shutdown time on the Mac Pro is normal and whether there is any way I could see what its doing while shutting down. It just sits there at the shutdown screen with the twirling icon and I'd prefer to see some messages or status so I know what is going on.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWithin the last few days my iMac (Mac OS X 10.5.8) has started acting up. It is running very slowly. I have over 100GB of space left. 4GB of Ram. I have been so worried that I have tried everything, including a virus scan (which I knew would be useless) and turns out I have no virus'. I have repaired the permissions on my HD. I have also rebooted it a bunch of times, did a software update. Things like my hot corners won't work. My dock doesn't pop up when I run my mouse over it. Right click is VERY SLOW. It's gotten so bad that when the screensaver on my iMac turns on the motion of the mouse doesn't do anything. I have to actually push a button on the keyboard for the screensaver to go away.

This is my first Mac so I wanted to ask if I'm missing something.. should I be doing something maintenance-like that I'm not?
I just updated now to MAC OX X Lion to 10.7.4 on my 2011 MB AIR. I noticed upon restart or shutdown, it takes around 15 seconds now. Before the update, it just takes less than 2 seconds to restart/shutdown.

I purchased my second MBP about 2 days ago and it has a shutdown tie of about 7-10 seconds. My first MBP shutdown pretty much instantaneously. My second MBP now takes a while to shutdown. There is nothing installed on my new MBP because I just got it. Pretty much straight out of the box but has a slow shutdown time. how I can make it shutdown in 1 second or so?

I am a new Mac user with no prior Mac experience. I recently (1 week ago) purchased a MacBook Pro running Mavericks? (10.9.4). Out of the box the machine was lightening fast with startup and shutdown speeds PC users can only dream of.
I connected the MacBook to a Windows domain and that went well with no problems. I installed Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac and configured Outlook to connect to Exchange on the SBS 2008 server. Again, all went well and the system performed flawlessly. Then I connected to the server via Go>Connect to Server, so I could access a shared folder on the Windows sbs 2008 and that is when my troubles began.
Ever since I made that connection to the Windows server via Go>Connect to server my Mac has trouble Starting-Up and Shutting-Down. Whereas before I made the connection my Mac would boot in under 10 seconds and Shut-Down in around 2 or 3 seconds, it now takes almost a minute to boot and over a minute to shut down.
The connection to the server was made as follows:
Go>Connect to Server
Server address cifs://MyServerName.MyDomain.local (actual names not used in the example but it is a dot local domain)
It does not matter if I actually access any of the shared files during any given operation of the machine... it now consistently takes several minutes to Power-Up and then Shut-Down.
I have two network connections... one wired and one wireless and it does not matter if I use one or the other (or even both). The problem remains. It also remains if I take the machine off the LAN and travel to another location... the Start-Up and Shut-Down remain painfully slow (for a Mac anyway). PC users will think I'm knit-picking but I didn't buy a Mac to suffer the same boot shut-down times that PC users have grown to accept.
If not for the fact that the Start-Up and Shut-Down were so amazingly fast prior to adding the share capability I might not even ask the question but just watching the blazing Startup speed for the few days before adding the sharing has spoiled me.

A few days ago, I found my macbook running slow. The starting time used to be 2+ min but slow down to 10+ min. I tried to reinstal by installation DVD but the time bar showed 5+ hours required. I restarted the macbook and tried to format the HD, after proper steps taken, the time bar showed 17 days. Instead booting from the system, I tried to boot direct from my installation DVD.
After formatted the HD and re-instal the system, the MacBook seems running smooth again. But after installation of other programs, the same problem recurred. The system was getting slow. Re-starting it required waiting over 10 minutes. I tried to re-format the HD and installed the system again but still doesn't work. Under the disk utility "first aid" scanning through the HD, it showed "Invalid key length." and "The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely."

Its taking about 3-5 minutes to log out and I dont know why I have disconnected a usb without ejecting it before, and also declined an microsoft autoupdate from Word. when im logging out, the screen turns blue and theres a spinning circle at the bototm. after that, the log in screen is not able to be clicked on anything, and it will take about 5-10 minutes to be able to be clicked and log in.

I have a 2.2Ghz Macbook with 2Gb ram and its running 10.5.2 (update went fine) and for some time now the start up of my mac has been very long. It sometimes take in excess of 30 minutes to turn on. It waits on the grey apple screen with the apple logo and the spinning loading sign near the bottom. Is there anything i could try without doing any major resets or reinstalls?

I back up to a My Book 2 terabyte external hard drive using Time Machine. My iMac is often very sticky, though I've done most of the diagnostics I know of and preferences etc. are seemingly all OK and fcuk -fs gives a positive result! The Mac is often hard to wake from sleep and in particular seems to spend a lot of time backing up very-very slowly, with the result that it frustratingly seems to be backing up most of the time with the consequent effects on using other programs. Also the whole thing seems to grind to a halt after a hard days work with quite a few applications open. I'm wondering what can be causing this and what I can do to overcome this very frustrating and debilitating problem?

I upgraded my wife's Late-2007 MacBook White to Lion and now sleeping and shutdown take a very long time. On Snow Leopard, sleep and shutdown was instantaneous! Close the lid and BAM! done. Selecting shutdown on the menu and BAM! turned off.
Now, after upgrading to Lion, they take a really long time. I deleted the shutdown log, turned off the computer and then turned it back on and checked on it. All processes go in less than a second, but com.apple.securityd doesn't exit at all and has to be killed as I see this message on the log:
19988665 1 com.apple.launchd 28 com.apple.securityd Exit timeout elapsed (20 seconds). Killing
One of the last messages on the log is this one:
19992024 1 com.apple.launchd 1 com.apple.launchd System: Userspace shutdown took approximately 20 seconds.
So I figure if it were not for com.apple.securityd, shutdown would be instantaneous, just as Snow Leopard was.

currently using a mid 09 13" Macbook Pro with 4gb of ram. Currently i have a Western Digital 1TB My Book External Hard Drive connected to the usb port. But everytime i try to access the ext hdd, there will be the dreaded beach ball ands takes around 3-5mins before the files can be displayed on finder. I never had this problem when it is plugged into my windows PC. My ext hard disk is currently formated in NTFS, im accessing the files through my mac using NTFS-3G. Could this be a reason?

My daughter purchased a MacBook Air 13" last 1.7 GH Intel Core i5, 4GB Memory. A couple of weeks ago, my daughter noticed that her computer was taking a long time to boot up. After running vmware fusion on my mac pro, If I try and restart or shutdown the machine it takes between 15 and 30 minutes to shutdown. If I haven't run fusion at all it takes 20 seconds. I have been unable to shutdown or restart my MBP mid 2012 retina (2.6 GHz Intel Core i70, other than by holding down the power button. I've tried, (safe mode, restore, repair permissions reset PVRAM. etc). I finally got it to shutdown regularly by eliminating all Divx software on my computer (no easy task), but shutdowns and restarts still hang an unusually long time, about 15 seconds.
I send console information just before my last BOOT_TIME to see if any process in the time after restart command and boot would give any hints. Here are the entries, and there appear to be some problems but I cannot interpret them. I have an external WD passport drive connected (which I can eject before restarting with no noticeable effect, and a USB hub, which I also disconnect to no effect).

It takes forever to load pages, if they load at all. The rest of the iMac is fine as before, which leads me to conclude this is an internet issue. I cleared the cache and browsing history in Google Chrome and no improvement. I tried using Safari and Firefox and they were slow too.
I also have a MacBookPro (2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, OSX10.6.4), so I checked the internet speed on that and it was normal. Both MBP and iMac are connected via an Airport Express. I searched various forums and threads for a solution, but I know very little when it come to these things so I quickly got stuck in technical jargon. I've tried to change the DNS server settings (first to 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2, then to 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220) but this has not helped.
