MacBook Air :: USB SSD Transfers So Slow

Jun 1, 2012

So I just bought a Corsair Force 120 GB Sata 6 SSD, and I am getting fantastic performances on it (reaching the full 550mb/s read, and almost the full 500 mb/s write). Unfortunately, when I plug it into my mac, the performance decreases to a level lower than my supper crappy USB flash drive - somewhere like 9 mb/s write, 15 mb/s read..

MacBook Air :: Wifi File Transfers Very Slow?

Mar 18, 2008

I've just set up my MBA, right out of the box - everything is going well apart from it take ages to copy files from my G5 to the MBA, over my WiFi connection.

A 33.6MB file has just taken 45 mins!

I'm doing nothing differently from when I used my very old (5 years) G4 PowerBook to transfer content. As a quick test, I've just transferred the same file to that lap top in about 15 seconds.

OS X :: 10.6.4 To Win7 Home Premium SMB Transfers Extremely Slow

Oct 12, 2010

I've a late 2008 unibody macbook pro, a desktop running windows 7 Home premium and my housemate has a new mac mini and we have a lot of media across all devices. What I'm trying to do, is allow sharing between the macs and the desktop PC (where most of the media is), as well as general file transfer (when transferring uni files and the like). I've got them connected and sharing files, but the problem that I have, is that the transfer speed is extremely slow. I'm talking an average rate of 150KB/s (it took nearly 40mins to transfer 350MB of data).

The network transfer speeds on these two devices are limited to 54MBps (Wireless-G) due to our AP (I'm working on getting a better one), but that should still allow for really quick transfers, far faster than what I'm getting. At the moment, they're set up on the same workgroup, and just using the "Network" window in w7 to access the MBP. It's really frustrating that it's going so slow. How to get these transfer speeds up to their correct levels? Or recommend a better option? If I haven't explained anything properly, this is the guide I followed: [URL]

Applications :: Entourage To Outlook Transfers

I want to transfer some emails from Entourage on my wife's Powerbook to Outlook 2007 on a PC and don't see how to do it. When I choose "Export" in the Entourage File section I am able to create a folder with a .msbox suffix but don't see how to move that to Outlook. I see some file format conversion programs on the Internet but they all seem to deal with Outlook to Entourage conversion.

Hardware :: Wireless Digital Pen - Transfers Data Onto PC?

Sep 26, 2010

I just started College, and during lectures I tend to take loads of notes. For this, I use either my MacBook Pro or a noteblock and a pen. My problem is, often it's easier for me to take handwritten notes, because I have to draw loads of graphs and stuff like that, but whenever I take notes on paper, I rarely ever look at them again. So I was thinking, there must be a way to get what I write and draw on paper into my MacBook. I tried researching a little, but as I have no idea what products are available, I thought I'd ask here for help. What I need, I think, is something called a Digital Pen, that transfers everything I write and draw onto my computer. I will be using it mostly for drawing, as I'll be writing text down on my computer instead of writing it on paper. If anyone on this board could tell me what I should get, or point me in the right direction,

Software :: Bluetooth File Transfers Between Two Mac Laptops?

Aug 7, 2008

I have a macbookpro but my friend has recent the black macbook. I tried to startup bluetooth and do a file transfer but it doesn't work. It just scans and scans, loads and loads, but nothing ever happens.

I successfully paired the computers, but they are not "connected". I tried to right click on connect or click on it somehow inside the bluetooth pane in system settings but does not work. There is no actual 'connect' button. It shows a list of computers that are "paired" or "recognized". States if its paired or not and right below has the connected icon.

Does bluetooth have a file limit size or something?

Sorry, but Bluetooth File Exchange is good but is lacking in functionality (i.e. the ability to transfer folders or multiple folders) and has quite a cumbersome user interface.

Intel Mac :: External USB Hard Drive Disconnects During Large File Transfers

May 9, 2012

I have a Western Digital 2TB USB Hard Drive that Ive been using perfectly for a couple of years on my MacBook Pro. A couple of months ago I bought a 27inch iMac and started using it as my main computer. So I had that hard drive connected to my iMac.

I started to notice that during large transfers (be it many files or 1 big one), usually into the Gigs, I suddenly got a warning message saying that the Hard Drive was inappropriately disconnected. It doesnt appear in Disk Utility so I have to manually connect and disconnect the drive in order for it to show up again on the iMac. I tested it again on my MacBook and the same thing happened.

Another problem:

Sometimes it will dissappear from the iMac without a warning message, it just doesnt show up. (Usually after long periods of inactivity). I then have to manually disconnect and connect for it to show up.

On our iMac the calculator app just flies along and has no problem keeping up no matter how fast I enter in numbers. Any ideas where to start on this one? Besides the standard software we have installed Microsoft Office and Handbrake.

MacBook Pro :: Slow Startup / Extra Slow To Load Dock / Interface

Mar 28, 2012

I have a Macbook Pro core 2 duo era 2007, OS 10.6.8, with an interesting problem I've not encountered in reading other issues. Here's the system profile, to get that out of the way: [code] Enabled Other than the faulty video card that seems standard for this run of the Pro, I have never had an issue. I have just replaced the battery from the original battery that came with the computer. It was useless to the extent of the word, but my budget did not allow me to purchase a new battery until recently. The battery info only stated "Replace Now" and the LED meter no longer functioned. The battery held no charge, and the computer only ran off of wall power. Up until a few days before I replaced the battery, this provided no trouble. However, it began one day to startup extremely slowly (5 minutes or more on the Apple logo startup screen, and then more time to load dock/top screen toolbar/etc. It also failed to recognize the external HD I frequently use with this computer. My theory was that it was simply underpowered on account of the failed battery, and the internal HD or the CPU was just not able to run properly. I finally put a new battery in hoping that it would fix the issue, but no avail. My startup time seems slightly less, but it seems as if the computer has not loaded interface protocols, as the computer is unresponsive to attempts to open the dock or a finder window, or even hover over battery or volume icons. After 5-10 minutes it finally kicks in and I can use my computer without problem, with the exception of the external HD, which will still not load.I have run disk utility, verified my HD, no errors reported. I have the activity monitor up which shows a pretty minimal load on the CPU and disk usage. Nothing I can think of would explain the problem my computer has suddenly adopted.

I have this MBP 13'' Mac OS X 10.7.5 running a 2.4GHz i5, 4GB RAMs and 500GB storage. The problem started yesterday when I was typing on Word and I copy pasted something from the net (chrome browser) then it froze.I waited for around 5minutes and still frozen with the spinning wheel, then I decided to turn it off by pressing power for 10 seconds restarted my

MBP then now it running so slow on start-up and apps are very slow to open like around 5 minutes. Every action that I try to do like clicking on the apple in the upper left it freezes showing a spinning wheel and it will take time to show the drop down options. I checked disk utility and it said that HD is ok, done verify/permission verify and repair.

I checked the activity monitor noting the ram/CPU usage and its normal it even tells that 2GB of ram is not use.It shows not responding in the activity monitor if you open an app for around 5mins then it opens or it will crash.I already done the 2 kinds of reset and did not work.BUT it opens normally in Safe mode.

MacBook Air :: Slow Opening Apps - Slow Read Speed?

Apr 17, 2009

I'm finding my MBA rev b to be quite slow opening apps, I bought the 1.6 ghz 120gb model.

It seems like everything's rather slow to open. I have 30gb free on the hard drive, iTunes, Safari (5 tabs) TextWrangler and mail open all day.

If I ever need to go into Firefox it takes a fair while to get up and running. I ran some xbench scores and it seems very slow on the random reads, oddly it was much quicker writing to the disk than reading.

Is their anyone in the know who can confirm that this is normal? Or if not, is there anything I can do to give it a boost?

Mac Pro :: Ripping DVDs Is Very Slow / TheRipper Is As Slow As Making A Disk Image

Nov 23, 2008

I am copying my DVD collection to the computer to be able to play on an iPod and a mac mini hooked up to the hdtv. Mainly TV shows.I have a Mac Pro with 2 DVD drives. The first one is the original drive (Pioneer DVR-111D) and the second is a Pioneer DVR-116D which I added. I intended to use this 2nd drive mainly for ripping DVDs because I knew I would have to update the firmware to get rid of riplock.

On the DVR-116D drive, I updated the firmware to remove riplock so it would not be limited to 5x read. I have not updated the firmware on the original DVR-111D drive. I am using fairmount to rip the DVD.Under OS X just ripping the DVD to the hard drive takes maybe 20-30 minutes. MacTheRipper is just as slow as is making a disk image using disk utility. I boot into Vista and use DVD Extractor and the same DVD takes 7 or 8 minutes .

Why is it so slow or is there a faster method of ripping a DVD on OS X?

Intel Mac :: Very Slow Startup And Very Slow Response Time When Doing Tasks?

Apr 22, 2012

recently my Mac is really slow, slow on startup(took around 1-2hours), and slow on task(more than 5 minutes delayed time on every single task), I don't know what happened to it,

My Mac specs:

1.Mid-2010 27 inch iMac,

2.Original 4g Ram upgraded to 12g

3.1TB HD has got more than 400gb free space.

4.i3 processor

5.Using latest Lion(I think it's 10.7.3)

Problems:

1.Startup tooooooooo slow, take more than 1 hour

2.Extreamly slow on tasks. Without any apps opened, every single click, it turned into the 'colorful fan', for instance, open finder, it took more than five mins, and it's not only the finder, it's EVERYTHING!!!!

What I have done so far:

1.I have reduced the login items

2.I have changed the password login to the automatic login

3.I have tried verify disk permission, verify disk, repair disk permission and repair disk

4.Unplug all unnecessary items(monitor, external drive etc.)

5.Run couple of time of 'clean my Mac', get rid of all the trash.

6.Cleaned the cache

Due to the ridiculous, frustrating startup, that's all I could do, however, none of them worked.

Now I am using recovery HD to reinstall Lion from a disc, but I don't know if it'll work or not.

I don't have another Mac, I don't have backups(don't want to lose my data),that's my situation.

OS X :: Webpage Loading Very Slow / Slow Internet Or CPU Speed?

Oct 30, 2010

Is there a way to tell which one is slow, if anything is going slow? I have an extremely old PC which is normally ok for most things, but gets bogged down if I am doing too many things.I was so annoyed with our national real estate site after they changed the format that I wrote a letter once a long time ago.. and I was ready to let them have it again, listing all the reasons why it is so bad and so much worse than the original.

Today for the first time, I accessed the site (mls.ca) using my new iMac. It was like lightening speed, comparatively speaking.Wow, suddenly I knew why the mls people hadn't changed their new format. But then I started going to other sites.. like airmiles.ca for example, and it was slow as heck... and stalling.. etc.
How would I be able to tell whether it is an internet slowness or the computer being slow?

MacBook :: Mac Slow Even After Formatting?

Dec 28, 2010

First off I would like to say that I did try searching (I know it's hard to believe that coming from a member with no posts) but its difficult to search for my problem because I don't really know how to describe it in keywords and get results. This probably isn't the right section but once again I'm not really sure how to describe my problem.

Here is the story. I primarily use Windows 7 on my computer through Bootcamp. (I also have Linux Mint 10 on my computer, don't think either of these are part of the problem but I thought I should let you know) I have had both of these installed for a while, and switch between them with no problems until yesterday. I booted into Snow Leopard (10.6.5) to update my iPhone firmware. The first time I booted into it, it would only load my wallpaper. I rebooted and this time I got my dock and task bar, but was unable to do anything other than move the mouse. I got right down to business and started the formatting process. I put the Snow Leopard disk in, but that somehow kicked my computer into action. I was able to use it, but it was very slow. So I uninstalled my themes thinking this was the problem. the themes required me to log off so I did that but it froze from there. Then I rebooted and tried the Snow Leopard disk trick again. It didn't work, but my computer was responsive after a few minutes (I don't think the disk had anything to do with it becoming responsive either, just think my computer was being slow) After that I ran Onyx thinking it would fix all of my problems. It didn't.

From here I started the formatting process. The first time around I really messed up (it was 2am and I had only gotten three hours of sleep, give me a break) instead of doing a clean install I accidentally did an upgrade. I woke up to find my computer still being it's slow self. I then spent the entire day today, formatting, reinstalling multiple times. It was slow even when I didn't restore from a backup. No matter what I would do my Mac would be unbearably slow (it wouldn't even load the welcome video, just show a blue screen while playing the music)

Here is the part that baffles me. My Windows partition still works (haven't tried my Linux Partition but I assume it also works) I don't think that my multiple partitions are the problem because I have had them all working since about July (I even upgraded Linux 9 to 10 two months ago without a problem)

I don't think I'm technologically inept but this is beyond me. My next step will be to replace my hard drive, but I have low hopes for that doing much, unless bad sectors are my problem (dunno if that could even be a culprit)

Hopefully I can fix this problem without sending it into Apple. I do have Apple Care but I doubt that warranty actually does anything, they'll just blame it on me so I have to spend another $1,000 to fix it or buy a new computer. Lets just say it won't be another Mac.

I have the late 2008 aluminum MacBook (non pro) intel core 2 duo
