OS X :: Preparing To Empty Trash But No Trash Emptying?
Apr 9, 2009
When I direct the G5 Leopard to "empty trash" I get a window saying "preparing to empty trash" and a counter that zooms upward, but no trash emptying. I ask myself "how difficult can this be?" But I guess the answer is 'too difficult for me."
What the heck am I doing wrong?

How do you delete individual items from Trash without emptying entire Trash? If I highlight one item in Trash, the only option is the Empty button. I'm afraid it will empty the whole thing. I don't want to do that.

I have a little issue with the trash, when ever I trash something it automatically empty the trash but before it was empty completely it display a massage.
I know normally if you want to trash something, all you have to do is press "⌘ + Delete". To empty trash you press "Option + ⌘ + Delete" But now when I press "⌘ + Delete" it display the massage as you see below.
How do I fixed it or have it go back to normal state?

I moved a bunch of files to the trash can after installing Snow Leopard, mainly backup files from OmniFocus.
I clicked Secure Empty Trash and over 500,000 items began deleting. These 500,000+ items deleted at the rate of 2-3 items a second. This would total 138 hours equaling over 5 days to Secure Empty the trash.
This is just ridiculous in my option so I just did the "Empty Trash" feature, showing me only 350 items, which deleted quickly in under 5 minutes...
So far I know with Secure Empty Trash that the trash is securely layered with 0's & 1's....but wonder what happens with just "Empty Trash?"
How easily accessible is it for someone to retrieve something that i've deleted?

My 24" iMac (2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, running OSX 10.6.1) crashed during a normal shutdown sequence and had to be closed down by holding in the power button. This resulted in three zero kB alias files with random names such as "." in the trash.
I cannot empty these files from the trash by any normal means and the trash icon permanently shows full. The files can be selected but cannot be dragged to the desktop or renamed. Other files put in the trash can be deleted normally.

My 09 Mac Pro trash won't make the normal trash sound when emptying the trash in SL. Does anyone know if this is for all SL users or how I can turn it back on? I like hearing the sound and don't like the fact that I have a glitch if this is one.

I've noticed that when I "Secure Empty Trash" though it takes longer, I usually regain a lot of gigabytes back. Currently, as of this post i'm "secure emptying trash" and i've regained about 25GB's which sounds about right considering there was about that much worth of video recordings from my video camera I no longer needed.
In the past when I've just "deleted trash" i've seen different results. If I have say 10GB's in the trash and I just "empty trash" then i'll maybe gain back like a GB or 2. ...if anything.
So, my concern is...say currently with the 25GB amount of trash I have, If I decided to just "empty trash", I obviously would not have gained back all the 25GB's..., perhaps just a few, guessing something like 5GB.
Well, does that mean that those GB's that are emptied in the trash (not securely) are just lost forever?
..Or will I regain those GB's the next time around (say weeks later) I securely empty the trash with whatever happens to be in there (all new stuff in the trash)?
Am I making sense?
Kinda confusing to me cause I don't understand it. But I feel it's vital for me to get this and have the most amount of gigs available on my Mac now that i'm using about 30GB's per week filming stuff and editing it on iMovie.

Despite having several files in the trash, its icon never changes (always shows an empty trash) and the "Empty Trash" option is dimmed (that is, cannot be used). OnyX ws the only solution but it's temporary. What's the fix I should apply to Mac OS X?Also, why is it that every time I want to move a file to trash I must enter my password? It's annoying to say the least. Please help me as I don't want to go through the royal pains of installing everything again, Windows-style. I think Mac OS X should be better than that.

I have a macBook Pro running Snow leopard. My problem is that the trash will not empty. I keep getting a message stating that there are some locked items in the trash and it asks if I want everything removed, the locked items only or the unlocked ones. No matter which I choose the result is the same, that is, the window opens showing that it has started to empty then it promptly closes.

I have about 22GB or about 23,500 items to be emptied from the trash. Most of items are just jpg images. I just started to commence emptying and it is taking approximate 1sec to delete one item. So by calculation, it will take 6.5 hrs. !
At same time, I'm just doing my normal spread sheet work.
Is there anything wrong?

I have been using Time Machine to backup my MacBook Pro, and today, my handy little Passport drive ran out of space so I dragged my folder, from my external image, to my Trash. When I emptied it, I got an error message (Code -8003) seen here: It is around 350 GBs or so, and I have deleted the folder once before, without any issues. What am I doing wrong and how can I empty the trash here? I also browsed through Console, but with my basic knowledge of it, didn't see any messages pertaining to it.

I have no idea where the right place to post this is because I am basically clueless about all computer stuff.
I just purchased a second hand Macbook from last December. It is running OS10.5.8. I am trying to get my new files set up/get rid of some of the applications left by the last owner. However, the computer is not allowing me to delete files.
I send them to the trash and that works. But then I press "Empty Trash" or "Securely Empty Trash", it makes the 'emptying' sound, closes the window but doesn't actually delete anything.
I really need to delete these files in order to make space for new ones and to keep my sanity (I hate messy computers).
What should I do? I tried pressing option/alt while emptying because someone told me that would help, but it doesn't seem to have done anything...

Twice recently, when I empty the Trash on my mid-2010 MacBook Pro with OS X Lion (current update), the Trash empties but the CPU goes to 100% utilization, the fans come on high, the CPU temperature as measured by an app exceeds 200 degrees Fahrenheit, and of course any commands produce a long beachball. The computer will only shut down by force via the power button.
Is it harmful for the CPU to max-out like this? The power-on self-test on startup reported "passed" so there doesn't appear to be any damage but I am not sure how much these tests really test. The Apple Hardware Test will not run in Lion. I ran one with my old Snow Leopard startup disk and it reported pass but recorded the test date as in the year 4012.

I have been cleaning up some portable hard drives (Western Digital 160 gig). After trashing some files, when I go to empty the trash, I get a message that I "do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items" and it does not delete the files. I have tried holding the option key down and have tried using secure trash..in both cases I get the same message.
