Now that these are coming down in price, is anyone using them to exclusively back up with time machine? I'm thinking it will be a lot quicker to backup too, with the MBA being SSD. I've seen a 32GB USB stick for �20. Would USB or a SDHC card be quicker?

I would think the answer would be yes, but all the info I find on Apple's website and the search results I browsed through on the formums only mention SD cards. No mention of SDHC. My old computer only read regular SD cards, which was a real bummer. I have a SDHC card for my camera, and am hoping the new Macbook Pro I'm going to buy can read the cards.

If i insert an SD card in the slot ,the SD does not appear as mounted disk on the desktop. Nothing. I tryied three different SD Cards. View 6 Replies View RelatedFor some reason it seems that my macbook pro isn't reading the SDHC card in my multi (10-in-1) stratitec USB2CR8 reader. I can't seem to find info on whether or not it is the reader and it can't read SDHC or the 4GB card size, or if the issue is with my computer. Anybody got any ideas, and if necessary I'll go and buy a new memory card reader if that is the issue.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've got an 8GB PNY Optima SDHC memory card. My computer would read it fine until up to a couple days ago. The camera that I use the card in can still read it, and all my files are (were) still there, so I'm inclined to believe that the problem is with the computer. I'm completely clueless when it comes to using Macs though, just recently made the switch over. Would anybody be so kind as to give me a hand here? I've tried reformatting the card in my camera, but that didn't change anything.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Panasonic DMC-TZ4 that I use for both pictures and video. I have a 1 gb SDHC card that has worked fine connecting to my Macbook (last white middle model, late 2008) via my generic 23 in one card reader. However, today I purchased a HP 16 gb SDHC card and it won't read on the Macbook at all. My camera uses it and acts as normal, but the drive won't even show on my Mac.
I attempted to use the card reader in Windows XP Pro via Parallels, and the same thing happened. In fact, I got an error stating that the USB device had malfunctioned. The card reader IS old. Maybe it's having trouble with the higher capacity? I'm going to try the cable that came with my camera, when I can find it. I may need to try a new card reader as well?
Anyone have good luck with a specific card reader? Or are they all in general going to work?

I have had a look on the net and they seem scarce. All of my SD cards are over 2GB in size, mostly 8GB so I need it to support SDHC. I would also love it to fit flush with the MBP and maybe be grey in colour! Please can someone help and let me know what model to 'google'

The only requirement I have of it is that it is able to read SDHC cards. Would it be better to get something like a 24 in 1 reader that works with SDHC or one that is simpler (and cheaper)? I am trying to format a SDHC card on my MBP. I am trying to create a recovery SDHC disk for my MBP.
The disk is a Transcend 16gb (class 10).
I formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) w/ a GUID Partition Table but after this, Disk Utility is now showing only 10.38 gb of usable space, but finder is showing me the full amount (15.79 gb). When I look in finder there are NO files or folders on the drive.
I tested trying to put more than 10.38 gb worth of files on the disk and was told there was not enough space. If I format the disk to anything other than Journaled, I get the full 15.79 gb. Has anyone ever experienced this before?
They have no in-built readers so I have tried as follow - 3 different USB external card readers (1 plug-in and 2 cabled), 2 different cables, 4 different cards (2 of each), and all of their combinations on all USB ports on both computers. All to no avail. Cards won't show neither on desktop, Finder, Disc Utility nor Image Capture. Mind you though, SDHC card will be seen by iPhoto (and iPhoto only) if it's plugged directly through the camera or printer/ scanner. Only it's a bit annoying process having to use it just to read the card! Not to mention the use of iPhoto (which I don't, normally) just to transfer images through it to their destination. I work with a lot of images, videos and music, and not having been able to transfer them smoothly makes my work a bit of a nightmare.

I've tried using the USB cable that came with the camera itself, as well as a USB card reader. iPhoto, and the laptop itself does not recognize the card, or that there is any device mounted at all. I've also tried checking "External Disks" in Finder Preferences, didn't seem to work.

Has anyone encountered this problem? Is it normal? Is there any way around it?
I am getting the following error from Time Machine when doing my first backup. The startup disk being backed up, and the TM disk are both the same size.
Macintosh HD: 465.44 (total); 393.99 (free); 71.45 (free)
Time Machine: 465.44 (total); 465.29 (free)
The Time Machine error is: Quote:
"This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 472.7 GB but only 465.3 GB are available." why would this be? Other disks are excluded from the backup, and Time Machine is telling me that it needs more space than it actually needs. What should I do?

My Time Machine backup takes up to 6 hours to do a backup of about 30GB. And each backup size is 31.5GB everytime !!
I have the following Config - 80 GB for OSX (53GB Free) and 40 GB (10GB Free) for Win 7 on Bootcamp. Sometimes I wonder if TM making a backup of Win 7 also everytime. (Does it mean - In a way its good, that means I should be able to restore the entire hard disk from TM including Applications, Win 7 , bootcamp and all the programmes installed in Win 7 in case I have a problem ?)
But the speed should still be fast... 6 hours to do a 32GB backup is torturous specially because then I have to leave the machine alone and cannot use it.
There are 3 macs:
A: an old macbook (the white one)
B: a modern macbook pro (retina)
C: another modern macbook pro (TBD)
I am giving away B now; I expect to get C in 2 months time; I keep A with me all the time.
The goal is to migrate all of the data from B to C. I have Time Machine backups of B.
Since the transition is a long time (2 months), I need to keep working on my data during this period. For this I will use A. This will generate new files, modify old ones, ...
Since A's HDD is much smaller than B's backup, I can move only part of them.
By the way, I have totally erased A and used migration assistant to restore part of my old data from B. So, when I use A now, I do it with my same account as in B (and the same I will use in C).
How do I manage my backups in such a way that, when I will get C, I can safely move all of the data I had in B plus all of the changes and modifications that I have done during the 2 month transition?
Can I just continue to use Time Machine (on A) to update the old backups? I am afraid that some mess could be created because the computers are different (before the backups were taken on B, while now on A), even the present data are different (because now A only contains a subset of the original B data, which I do NOT want to lose), the good point is that the user is the same.
As the title says, I have a card reader that works great with a CF card, but the MBP won't recognize an SD card. This is a new problem for me. I also have an express card adapter for SD that won't read the card, either. I have tried 4 different SD cards, and these exact cards have worked for me in the recent past (within the past 2 months). They work fine in the camera. I also tried connecting the camera via usb, which was unsuccessful. I tried blowing air on the cards and the reader. I cannot get the cards to be read on my wife's macbook. This makes no sense to me, as it worked fine the last time I tried. I find it hard to believe that all cards are corrupt, or the cable is the problem because it reads the CF card.
