Mac :: Mac Mini And Wireless Router Options?

Jul 11, 2009

I searched this forum, but couldn't find the direct answer to my question, so please forgive me for posting what I'm sure is a very basic question and something that has been posted here before. I'm getting a new 2009 mac mini tomorrow. I currently run a wireless network via an older Airport express that connects two Macbooks to the internet in a small 2-bedroom apartment. The plan is to make the mini a media center and home network server. With that in mind, is it best to link the mini wirelessly onto my existing wireless network (802.11g)? Or should I get an airport extreme (802.11n) and link that wirelessly to the mini? Or can I run the cable modem directly into the mini and have it function as the wireless router (saving me the expense of buying the airport extreme)?

Mac Mini :: Swap Out Mini PCI-E Wireless Card In 27"?

Jan 22, 2010

Anyone tried swapping out the Mini-PCI-e for anything else?

Ive been following the custom upgrades and ive upgraded every Mac computer ive bought over the last few years - its now time for me to change the studio as its running an aging G5! But ive fallen in love with the 27" IMac - my head says no, my heart says yes yes yes!

The problem is it doesn't have the ins and outs for a proper pro machine and no PCI-E of course...but im willing to live without a couple of PCI-E cards for this beautiful machine, especially as im planning on putting two Intel X25-M G2's in, in a software raid 0 config by removing the opitcal drive (as I have done on my macbook pro)

which got to me thinking, i'll have all my network access via ethernet - so I wondered, any chance i can pull that wireless card out and swap it for something else...perhaps thread something out of the CD slot and around the back?

I need some bigger storage on here, so i'll be using the FW800 port for a 2tb 7200rpm external drive, however, i still need FW400 devices and I dont want to slow the FW800 drive down by daisy chaning them on...so...

Any chance one of the mini-pci-e to firewire 400 adapters will work in the iMac and in OS X?

Also ive seen this "PEMINI2X1 is a PCI Express Mini to PCI Express X1 adapter"[URL]

Any chance you could use "some" PCI-E cards with that outside of the imac, im thinking specifically the UAD-2...

Getting either extra FW400 port, or a PCI-E card externally via that slot would enable me to go one of two ways to having the perfect system for me.

Any just to confirm, im right in thinking the 4 USB ports run on two separate USB buses?

Mac Mini :: Sporadic Wireless Connection With Mac Mini?

Oct 20, 2008

I have a Mac Mini (OS X 10.4.11); internet & email worked fine when I had it hardwired to cable. I've since moved it to the other side of the house and it has problems connecting to the wireless network (linksys router). The wireless network is strong, and my laptop (PC) never has any problem connecting. The Mac, however, sometimes connects no problem and works well for a while, and then just dumps the connection and won't reconnect. I can't figure out what makes that happen. I finally get frustrated and walk away, and an hour later when I walk back it's working again. The signal strength indicator will vary from full signal strength to zero (even though my laptop never has any problem at all connecting). I live at the end of a cul-de-sac with basically no neighbors, so I don't see there being any sort of interference. I stopped by an Apple store today and the best the salesman could do was blame Comcast, my internet service provider.

Mac Mini :: New Mac Mini Ethernet Versus Wireless

Apr 1, 2009

it seems loading webpages and downloading a lot of files at the same time, I thought the ethernet would be the fastest but its not.

This is very strange and my wireless on the mini is so much faster in loading webpages (no more inbetween stops) and its just overall faster.

It seems like using ethernet slowed down my mini like it was doing some tedious work to use the mini's ethernet capabilities or something.

Anyone else experiencing this? I've also tweaked with a lot of settings under ethernet, got the right ip address for it with the right port as well.

Mac Mini :: 2006 Getting Hot And Fan Is Being Louder Suddenly?

Jun 10, 2012

I have late 2006 mini baught in march 2007.  Seems getting a little hot.  Fan is a little louder all of a sudden.  Or maybe I'm imagining it.  But does feel a little hot.  Maybe I need to move it from under my monitor stand so it can breathe but it has been there since 2007 without any problems.  It is core duo not 2 duo.  2gb of ram I added at the store when I got it.  They installed it. Anyhow I installed temperature monitor widget and it says "CPU A Temperature Diod 62 degrees celsius" and "CPU A Heat Sink 53 degrees celsius".  Also I installed "fan control 1.2" as written on another even though for macbook pro works on mini well.  But it says left fan 3850 rpm and right fan -1 rpm.  Is that because mac mini has only 1 fan.  Anyhow is 60 degrees about normal??  Or even idle (or even just replying here and only 1 tab open) 50 - 60 is too much??

Mac Mini :: Unable To Get Dual Displays / Using Mini DVI And Mini DisplayPorts

Sep 12, 2010

I have an Early 2009 Mac Mini with Mini DVI and Mini DisplayPort. And I have two 1080p HDTVs. The Mac Mini is capable of dual display, and I've gotten it to work before, so the issue is not the TV or Mac. And I have tried both Mirroring and No Mirroring.

I got a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (#5311) and a Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter (#4852) both from MonoPrice. And for some reason I can't get the Mac Mini to dual display, it's only one or the other.

Before I had a Mini Displayport Male and USB Male AUDIO to HDMI Female Converting Adapter (#5969) and I got video on both HDTVs, but not audio at the same time b/c one was USB and one was TOSLINK.

I'm not sure why I can't get video on both monitors. Any help?

Mac Mini :: How To Conncet HDTV Using Mini Display Port Or Mini Dvi?

I need to connect my 09' Mac Mini to my Yamaha RX-V2700 receiver which outputs to my Sony XBR HDTV. I know the mini has both mini-dvi to dvi and mini-dp to dvi or hdmi available via adapters. I was thinking to go with option 1 however I was wondering what is your opinions? Is mini-display port better over mini-dvi or are they the same? Audio will be carried over optical toslink.

Option 1:
Using mini-dvi adapter to dvi: Connect Dvi-Hdmi cable to receiver and output audio with toslink adapter.

Option 2:
Using mini-dp adapter to dvi or hdmi: Connect Dvi-Hdmi cable to receiver and output audio with toslink adapter.

Mac :: Mac Mini Windows Seven Options With Boot Camp?

Sep 2, 2010

I've had the new version of the Mac Mini ever since it came out, and just now, I've run into my first major problem with it.So the first thing I did, since I'm a huge gamer, was use Boot Camp to install Windows 7 on my mac mini. It has been working absolutely flawlessly until recently, and I only just noticed this major problem.I rarely use the Mac OS, but now, when I need to for a school project, I can't get into the Mac OS part of my partition.I've owned a Macbook Pro before and I had Windows Vista installed on there via boot camp, as well, and I used to use the method of holding down the alt button on my keyboard to switch between which partitions I wanted to use. Now my problem is that for some reason, whenever I restart, even when I hold down alt, the computer boots straight into whichever hard disk is loaded as my main hard disk. I believe this is because I'm using a Windows-based keyboard, and not a mac keyboard. Does anybody else run a mac with a windows based keyboard and know if there is a workaround for switching up boot disks?

IMac ::Mini Monitor - Screen Recycler Options In A System

Jun 28, 2010

I've searched online and in threads here on the "can I use an iMac as a monitor" question, and found mostly negative answers. One exception seems to be the 27" model connected via mini-Display Port. However, I'd been hoping to connect an older (G4/DVI) Mini to a new (21.5") iMac, to use the iMac as a monitor. The only semi-hack solution I've seen is to use Screen Recycler or similar software. I have two questions, though:-Can Screen Recycler be used to mirror a desktop, not just extend it? (all info I've seen talks only about extending/2nd monitor, not mirroring).
-How's the performance?

MacBook Pro :: Mini DisplayPort Stopped Working After Liquid Spill - Options?

Apr 28, 2012

So I spilled a small amount of tea on the left hand side of my MacBook Pro a few weeks ago.  I immediately disconnected the power adaptor, forced shut down and placed the laptop level in a warm, dry area for several days to dry out.  On boot up everything performed normally, and has done since, except that when I tried to connect my laptop to my TV last week, nothing happened.  I use a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adaptor and normal VGA cable to connect to my tv, and have done this many times before with no issues.  The laptop normally automatically recognises that an external display is connected and outputs a video signal - an extended display under OSX Snow Lion, or a mirrored display under Windows 7 Ultimate x64 running in Boot Camp - now literally nothing happens, the laptop does not seem to recognise or react to the fact that the display is connected, and no video signal is output.

My laptop is covered under AppleCare, but I realise that, as this is almost certainly liquid damage, there is probably little that can be done to have this fixed on my AppleCare.  What are my options?  I don't wish to pay out of pocket for what could potentially be a costly repair, but if there is a possibility to get the Mini DisplayPort working again I would like to explore it.

Mac Mini Cannot Connect To Wireless Internet

Feb 14, 2012

I recently got wireless internet. Before, the Mini worked fine connected by cable. It has never been connected to a wireless before. The wireless router works correctly, my $250 PC connected to it instantly.  There is a yellow light on Airport and it automatically populates an IP address, whatever that means. I haven't installed any new software since it worked with a cable, no funky setup or third party anything- it's just a mac mini plugged into a TV I watch Netflix on and that's all.

My ISP said it's a problem with the computer, the Mac free support could not fix it. I really don't want to pay for an extended warranty or phone support on something basic that this computer should just automatically do. I haven't tried typing in a manual IP address- I don't know what that address would be. If all else fails, I will just run a cable to it again.
