Mac Mini :: Central Location Matching CPU

Jan 18, 2009

I'm really in need of a new Mac, my iBook G4 still does what I need, but not so great in music production In any event, I don't have loads of money and as much as I'd like to buy a MBP, I'm lookin at the Mac Mini, more so now after seeing it can be upgraded beyond what apple is willing to offer. It voids the warranty but I don't care, I've been building computers since I was a kid with my dad (obviously started with PC). Problem is I can't find a central location about matching up CPU's or limitation and all that good stuff. Do you guys know where to point me so I can start checking prices on things to find out if it's worth the trouble?

Mac Mini :: Power Button Location Not Very Good

Feb 18, 2012

The only gripe so far with my 2011 Mac Mini is the power button on the BACK of the computer. Really? Everything else I can turn on while sitting in my chair, but I have to get up and reach around the mini to turn it on. I guess I'll have to get an under desk mount and put it close to the front of the desk so I can reach it.

Was Apple worried LaCie was going to sue them over design issues if they had a single power button on the front?

Applications :: Grand Central With Snow Leopard?

Aug 26, 2010

Now that Snow Leopard has been out for some time will Grand Central Dispatch ever be used by apps such as Final Cut or Handbrake type apps? Seems like it is a feature that sounded good on paper but developers never really jumped on it.

Applications :: Using Grand Central Dispatch And OpenCL?

Jul 4, 2010

When Snow Leopard came out last year, Apple made marketing out of the fact of having no new features. Arstechnica wrote a splendid review praising the potential of the two new core technologies it brought, and the perspective performance improvements coming from them.

The "radically new development paradigm" was promising for a slower deployment, but I though it would have been compensated by the advantages in speed and code maintainability.

So I've been periodically sampling the Internet for news on either technology. I expected lists of applications employing them, or some visibility on existing apps directories (like "GCD" or "OCL" tags). In lack of these I then resorted to expecting some random block posts from developers, but even of this I find very little.

The most material you find from Robert Watson, concerning applications at the FreeBSD project!

So what happened to these technologies under the Mac? Did they pass ignored by Mac Developers? If so, why? If not, why do they not reflect publicly the same excitement that the competent Ars masters showed?

Hardware :: Home Network - Central Storage Point

May 7, 2009

Just about to move to a new place I'm trying to think of the best way to network it with what existing equipment I have. So I will be getting virgin cable installed as my ISP which comes with wireless router although not sure which one. What I basically want to have is a home network with a central storage point for all my music and movies/tv. I currently have the time capsule for backing up my macbook, I lead to believe that this cannot be used to store my music collection which I wanted streamed to other laptop on the same network.

I also have a WD My Book NAS(networked attached storage) drive as well as various other external usb hard drives. I have also just looked at the apple air port express base station which I may purchase. So with all this hardware in mind how would I go about setting up my network effectively so that I can keep everything(music/tv/movies) centrally and be able to access through laptops which I plan to have around the house.

OS X :: FreeBSD Adds Support For Snow Leopard's Grand Central Dispatch

Oct 16, 2009

Apple's Grand Central Dispatch technology, which debuted in Snow Leopard as a mechanism for optimizing parallelism across multiple cores and processors, has now been ported to FreeBSD. Apple publicly announced plans to release its GCD technology as open source last month; the FreeBSD team demonstrated its early port of the new feature at EuroBSDCon 2009 in Cambridge, UK just days after Apple's announcement. Out of the box support for GCD is scheduled to appear with the release of FreeBSD 8.1. The work required to port Apple's GCD event and concurrency framework to other operating systems is more complex than many other higher-level open source packages because GCD requires integration into the kernel (the core component of the operating system which manages processes, memory, and other hardware).

Most Unix-based software is highly portable between Mac OS X, Linux, and BSD, but significant kernel differences between these systems makes porting low-level, kernel-integrated technologies like GCD more work. In particular, Mac OS X uses a unique kernel design based on a hybrid of Mach and BSD. Porting GCD to FreeBSD required adaptations to account for a more conventional kernel environment without a Mach layer, such as using POSIX semaphores instead of Mach semaphores. FreeBSD's porting efforts should help to make GCD easier to port to other operating systems with conventional Unix or Unix-like kernels, including OpenBSD, NetBSD, Linux, and Solaris..........................

ITunes For Mac :: Media Folder Location Keeps Reverting To Old Location?

Sep 6, 2014

I moved my iTunes media folder to an external hard drive to free up space on my iMac's hard drive.  The new one is located on a hard drive attached to my Airport Express.  Since then, I keep getting messages stating that certain items weren't copied to my iPhone because the originals couldn't be found.  When I check, the iTunes media folder has reverted to the location on my iMac's main hard drive.

How can I prevent this?  At best this is annoying, but it also is using up hard drive space unnecessarily.  Is this behavior avoidable, or is it something that goes with the territory when you move your media folder to an external hard drive?

IMac :: Advantages To Matching RAM?

Sep 23, 2010

Just a quick question for anyone kind enough to take a moment to answer: I have a 24" 2.93GHz Core2 Duo iMac (last year's model) that shipped with 2 x 2GB (hence total 4GB) of RAM. I am starting to feel the crunch from more memory-intensive programs, and so the time has come to upgrade. is there a clear performance advantage to installing matching RAM sizes, as opposed to 2 sticks of different sizes? I noticed that [URL] currently offers an 8GB kit (2x4GB) for around $260. This is a bit beyond my budget, so I was thinking of instead just getting one 4GB through them for $130, and then mixing it with the Apple 2GB stick which is already in the computer. Would I see a significant performance upgrade with the 6GB mismatched RAM vs. the 4GB matched?

OS X :: Matching User Account And Domain Name

Nov 20, 2009

I created my account username om my Mac ( OSX 10.6.2 ) long before I created my website. If we take it that my user account name happens to be 'myname' and my website happens to be [URL]. I hadn't noticed it was a problem until the other day. I changed the site base ref to work from [URL] away from {URL]. The problem is on my Mac, the address [URL] is referring to the local web server, ie pre installed Apache and library/webserver/documents not the actual web address. If Web server is switched off via the sharing control panels - the address returns a google not found page? which seems very odd.

It will also do this from any user account - identical results, so I know the Mac has reserved the name in some way. I don't want to rename my user account. I cant see my own website on my Mac which is very frustrating, as my website root is forcing all traffic to [URL] ( which is what I want of course ) and not [URL]. I have to use Parallels with a version of Windows to see the site properly.

OS X :: Import Files In IMovie - No Matching Video

Jul 19, 2008

Using iMovie, I imported 15 minutes length of video from HANDYCAM SONY HDR-SR11 (Hard Disc type), everything looks good as the indicator also saying something like "completed importing 15 minutes of video". However the clip was not even created on the Event. I also tried to do the same for 1 Hour video, ended up the same. I click on the Event and It says 'No matching video. Choose a different option from the Show pop-up menu at the lower left corner'. I choose different option but still can not see the clips with any options at all.

The facts :
1. I have no issue with importing shorter clips ( eg : 5 minutes )
2. The disc space is totally enough.
3. Importing from my old handycam canon ( MiniDV type ) has no issue at all.

But until I'm even close to where I am with PC/PowerPoint, I need help with what must be an incredibly simple task - taking a slide from one Keynote deck and adding it to a different Keynote deck with a different format... and having it match the new format. You'd think (or at least I'd think) it'd be like Pages, e.g. "Paste and Match Style"... no dice. In PowerPoint, this is automatic - drop a slide behind a slide and it matches that slide.

ITunes :: Changing Storage Location With Media In The New Storage Location?

Jun 30, 2012

Equipment: Mac Mini (Early 2009), Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GHz, 4 GB RAM, Lion. I started noticing my Mac Mini was having trouble reconnecting my Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, slow processing (spinning pinwheel of death), and programs freezing. I did a recovery within Lion from the recovery drive and it seemed to work for a week or so. It started acting up again. So, I decided to erase the HD and reinstall Lion. I basically use the Mac Mini as a server for all my iTunes content.

My iTunes default save location is to my Drobo storage unit. Now that I have reinstalled Lion, I am looking for the easiest, most convenient, and safest way to change the default save location in iTunes and then importing the media. It would be nice if it was possible to just simply change the default save location to the folder I previously had all my media saved in and it would just magically appear in iTunes. Everything was organized perfectly, which took hours of time and attention to details.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Not Incremental Despite Disk+device Names Matching

Apr 6, 2012

So after replacing my OS X disk drive with a larger-capacity one, I make sure that the drive has the same name (Macintosh HD) it had before.

Then I go to "Sharing" in the preferences and use the name "Alex's MacBook", with the exact same type of single quote, to match the name used on the TM machine disk (under Backups.backupdb).

Next I am expecting Time Machine to do an incremental backup.

No such luck: Everything gets copied.

What happened? I have had trouble in the past with Time Machine not allowing me to see the history when inside the star-wars-like TM interface, but the files were all there (I could still sudo and copy back anything I needed by hand). The backups were incremental.
