Apr 29, 2010I recently purchased a dongle to connect my 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo white MacBook to the S-video in my Sony TV. [URL:...] When I got it home it didn't work. I went online only to find that my model of laptop is not able to use this dongle. So my question is - how would I connect my macbook to the S Video in of my TV? I'm thinking I'll need to use the Mini DVI to VGA dongle [URL:...] and then use something else to convert it to S-Video.

My macbook has 4GB RAM, and is mostly decent but performance drops when running some photoshop plugins (which I use frequently). I�m looking for a desktop upgrade, and since I�m already using an external monitor and keyboard the mac mini seems more suitable than the imac.

May 11, 2012In the interest of energy savings, I think it would be great to be able to use switchable graphics on my Intel Core i7 Mac mini. Since the i7 chipset has the Intel HD3000 GPU onboard, this should be possible, but it would probably require some sort of hack or modification to the EFI. I've searched around online but only find mention of using both Intel HD3000 and discrete graphics with a Hackintosh.

Dec 22, 2010I have an Intel Mac mini (purchased in 2005 or 2006) with a fresh install of OS X Leopard on it. I recently changed the Startup Disk in the OS X system preferences to be the CD/DVD drive, and everything has gone downhill since there.
I inserted a CD and attempted to boot from it right after changing this setting. I noticed the CD drive spun up the disk, but after waiting several seconds a black screen appeared, saying "No bootable device — insert boot disk and press any key".
There were two problems here: first, the CD never ejected from the computer, and second, there was no response to any key press.
After restarting and shutting down a few times I got the Mac to spit out the CD somehow. I restarted, inserted the same OS X Leopard disk used to install the operating system earlier that day, and got the same "No bootable device" error.

My Mac Mini is a 2006 Intel Core Solo model, and in September I'll be wanting to buy Snow Leopard but I want to be 100% sure that my Mac Mini will be able to install Snow Leopard since its DVD media. I know I can't burn DVDs with this Mac Mini but, although may seem like a stupid question will I be able to install Snow Leopard with it being DVD media.

Mar 13, 2009For the CPU of the new minis, I can choose between 2.0GHz (intel Core 2 Duo P7350) and 2.26GHz (P8400). I wonder if I can replace the CPU myself (now or later) e.g. by the P8700 which runs at 2.53 GHz. I heard that this is impossible. Even upgrading from 2.0GHz to 2.26GHz is said to be impossible. I was told that if I want the 2.26 GHz CPU, I have to decide so before I buy, as it is not possible to upgrade later.

I have been looking at the new mac minis (self upgrading the HDD and RAM), but for not too much more it looks like I could get a 12-18 month old mac pro.
Is it worth getting the older machine with better specs or will the new mini actually be more capable?
I will use it for photography (lightroom, PSE6, iphoto) word processing (MS Office 08) and obviously email/safari.
I have done quite a bit of searching around but can't seem to find much info on this topic, plenty about G5 powermacs vs mini but nothing on the dual xeon dual core 2.0ghz pros.
Any info/advice much appreciated

Apr 5, 2012My one week old iMac 2.7GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5. first started problems by not goping to sleep even when I forced it.
I shut it down using the shut off button and unplugging it from power for more than 5 munites.
I turned it back on, it does the usual startup chime and then gray screen. I have restarted twice from the shot off button and still getting the same result.

Nov 7, 2010I've been given the Blu-ray set of season 1 of the classic 70s sci-fi series Space:1999, but I don't have a BD player. What I am thinking about doing is buying an external BD drive for my Mac mini HTPC, ripping the episodes with MakeMKV and playing them in Plex.
I want to maximise the quality so I don't want to recompress the video in any way. At the risk of asking a really dumb question, will I get reliable playback from a truly "raw" 1080p24 BD rip played off a Firewire 400 drive, or will the data rate be too high?

Apr 15, 2012My old Mini is in the next room to the wireless DSL modem. It gets one to three max bars, usually two, and it's just through one interior wall. I don't want to spend a bunch of money, I just want to get a little better reception in the next room. I have seen USB wifi antennas advertised. Would that do anything for me? My iBook G4 in the same spot gets full reception no problem.

It really worth pay $200 more? It really worth the four cores? My main needs are run CS4, some Final Cut, maybe Logic Studio, and switch between different OS's (OS X, Windows, and Linux). I think even a 21.5� model would be more than enough, but I just wonder If Quad Core gonna give me more power (I hope so).

BUT, i cant do either because all the editing software requires snow leopard or higher. the Mac doesnt even have I Movie, Garage Band. To get any sort of editing software i need snow leopard. To get snow leopard i have to have an Intel Based Processor MINE ISN'T INTEL. So pretty much i have NO WAYS to edit or create videos.

May 24, 2012I recently moved to a MacMini Server Quad i7 to give my studio a boost. From what I was reading it was giving other post-audio pro's a **** of a boost in performance for obvious reasons.Been pretty good the last couple of weeks, but today, during a large session, it started choking.I opened up the Activity Monitor and, aside from obviously needing more RAM, my CPU was going pretty hard. An odd thing I noticed though: In both the CPU tab, and the Dock "Show CPU Usage" only CPU/Bar shows up. On my previous Mini (a 2.66 Core 2 Duo) 2 CPUs/Bars are present. This seems very strange to me that a Quad core shows up as 1, but am I wrong in my assumption? It seems to get VERY taxed vs. my old system, and given the fact that they have the same amount of RAM this seems very wrong to me.

Dec 4, 2009My first mini has a problem. It will power on with the light and then promptly turn off in about 3 seconds. The hard drive spins up but the fan does not turn on. No image on the screen or anything. the mini is open for diagnosis and will do the same thing if the CPU is not installed. Interesting question what will a mini do when it is powered on but doesn't have its CPU installed?

All the editing is going to be done in the mpeg4 format and once the video has been edited I am going to encode the video into H.264. I am looking for stable set up that can handle encoding video for a few hours at a time. I am leaning towards the Power Mac Dual G5 because of how much more cooling it has however that said a Mac Mini with a Core 2 Duo running at 1.66 Ghz would also probabley work well.
