Mac Pro :: Way To Backup Or Mirror?

Sep 18, 2009

Alright, so this is what I have and what I want to do... What is the best and easiest way to get this done...

I have two 1TB WD Blacks... One I want to use to store all my videos... The other I want to use to backup the first... What are my options? The stuff on this drive rarely changes, but there are times where I will burn several DVDs at a time to the drive... I do this in order to play them wirelessly through my AppleTV...

My main drive is backed up using the TimeCapsule.

OS X :: How To Go About Backup / Mirror External HD

Sep 29, 2010

I just did a zero delete on my computer and only have CS5 master suite and Lightroom on my computer now (MacBook Pro 2010). I have 2 external harddrives I'm using. Both are 1TB. I have the Master drive with everything on it, and I want to use the 2nd drive to keep an updated copy of everything. Then I have a 3rd Hard drive, that I want to backup the 2nd backup and keep that off site. What is the best way to go about this?

MacBook Pro :: Media Backup - Mirror - For Bigger Arrays?

Jan 6, 2010

At this point I wish I just got a MacPro instead, this wouldn't be a question. I have a new 17"uMBP, bought specifically to take advantage of eSATA through the expresscard slot. I do photography and video work. I bought the best possible card, the Sonnet Tempo dual eSATA, to offer highest transfer speed and because it's the newest technology. To accommodate my media I bought a OWC Mercury Elite Al-Pro 2TB RAID 0. It's great. I wish I got the Qx2 RAID 5 but it's a little pricey and expensive to upgrade, but at least it has redundancy. I need to have a reliable backup solution. Drobo is expandable but I've seen so many poor reviews. I could buy another Al-Pro 2TB RAID 0 and connect them both and do a software RAID 1 with them. Or I could buy a cheap 2TB eSATA external and do daily backups. I could also get a dock and fill up drives as needed. Is there really an advantage to mirroring other than if my drive fails in the middle of a job? Wouldn't the software RAID needlessly slow down my system? Even if I did get the Qx2 RAID 5 it is bad to rely on such a system by itself to both store and backup my media or is it in itself a very reliable solution?

Software :: Time Machine Unable To Perform Backup / Backup Is Too Large For Backup Volume

Oct 26, 2008

I am getting the following error from Time Machine when doing my first backup. The startup disk being backed up, and the TM disk are both the same size.

Macintosh HD: 465.44 (total); 393.99 (free); 71.45 (free)
Time Machine: 465.44 (total); 465.29 (free)

The Time Machine error is: Quote:

"This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 472.7 GB but only 465.3 GB are available." why would this be? Other disks are excluded from the backup, and Time Machine is telling me that it needs more space than it actually needs. What should I do?

MacBook Pro :: Using Mirror Displays?

I have a mid-2010 Macbook Pro with the Nvidia 330m. Does using Mirror Displays require any less system resources (such as VRAM) than Dual Displays? I mean it shouldn't right (assuming that you use the same resolution for Mirror and Dual) because there is still content on both screens being written to the VRAM?

Hardware :: Can I Boot From A RAID 1 (mirror) In My G4?

Oct 2, 2008

I don't know where I read about this, but I am getting ready to redo one of my systems. Currently it has 2 identical 250GB Hitachies, which use Super Duper every Sunday to backup. I tried doing a RAID 0 back in like 2004 on a system that had 4x60GB. I found out through trial and error and then later reading that you can't boot from a RAID in a Power Mac G4. But like I said earlier I don't know where I read this, but someone stated I could boot from a RAID 1 (mirror) in my Power Mac G4. Is this true? or not? Is it possible to boot from a RAID 1 in a Mac G4 but not RAID 0?

Something tells me this isn't going to work. I have a 10% glimmer of hope that maybe it will just see the drive as a regular drive. This would really be great. If anyone knows the answer to this puzzle please feel free to let me know...

IMac :: External Monitor Not Currently Set To Mirror

Aug 6, 2008

Upon booting the machine, the LCD display flashes a proper view of the login screen for about 1 second
but then goes dark. When an external monitor is attached the external monitor works perfectly fine -- the
only trouble being that the external monitor is not currently set to "mirror" so it is impossible to log in and access the machine. The IT dept at the institute has a monopoly on repair of computers and so the quick answer -- take it to Apple is not all that easy. Is there a way to:

1) set the iMac to mirror display upon booting up by some clever key combination?
2) set the machine to mirror by remote access and command line methods?
3) mirror by changing something using target mode?
4) or the obvious...somehow login using the real estate provided by the external monitor.

Also has anyone seen this problem with iMac displays? An Intel iMac I think 2.16 Intel Core 2 Duo processor running Tiger.

Hardware :: Mirror Display Not Using The Whole Screen?

Jul 27, 2009

I have an Early 2008 Macbook connected to a 22" 1680x1050 display. When I set it to mirror the display and set it to the full resolution of 1680x1050 it only uses about 16" of the external display, when i set the resolution to 1280x800 on the external display it then uses all of the display.

When I don't mirror the displays it uses all of the display in full resolution.

Is there anyway to solve this so that i can use it to mirror the display but use all of the screen!

Mac Pro :: Bootable RAID 1 Mirror Configuration?

Sep 28, 2009

Having never set up a RAID config I was hoping I could get a little confirmation on setting up. Firstly, all data will be backed up using a NAS (maybe a time capsule), so at the moment I am just looking to mirror the primary drive of a Power Mac G5 incase of hardware faults.

The G5 is acting as a server and I therefore want to arrive at a situation that if a drive fails, the machine will still boot perfectly from one of the redundant disks (and of course notify the user to the failure), i.e. a bootable RAID 1 configurationAs I understand it, I can only achieve this using a dedicated RAID controller (i.e. this can't be done via a software raid)? Is this the case?

PowerPC :: Is It Possible To Use An EMac As A Screen Mirror For A MacBook

Aug 8, 2006

My next computer purchase will probably be a MacBook (or MacBook Pro) but I obviously want to be able to plug it into a better screen when I'm at my desk. I was wondering if anyone knows if it would be possible to use my current eMac as this screen?

I have heard that in the early iMacs the monitor was connected internally with a normal monitor lead - so you could open it up and connect a longer one. Does anyone know if this would be the case with an eMac?

Or any other way I might be able to do this?

The problem is that the iSight, for convenience' sake, shows my camera image flopped as a mirror image as opposed to how it appears on my friend's screen. Eg.: If I hold up my left hand, my screen shows me appearing to hold up my right hand. This obviously aids me if I need to straighten my hair and such, but for the game we want to play, it mucks things up big time.

OS X :: Will Snow Leopard Recognize Mirror Configurations?

May 31, 2009

I'm currently setting up two 1TB hard drives as mirrored RAID drives.

Seems easy enough to do through Disk Utility, though zeroing out the data takes about 1.5 days for each drive, due to their size I assume.

Will it be easy to migrate these drives to Snow Leopard?

Will it just be a matter of adding them to the RAID list in SL's Disk Utility? Will it recognize them automatically?

Hardware :: Mirror Door G4 Wont Boot?

First the problem started when the mac would go to sleep I couldnt wake it up. The monitor light would just blink green and the screen would be black. Also programs started just randomly crashing, for no reason. Mainly Firefox (tired Safari, same thing.) Now the computer will not boot. Meaning I start it, it chimes, i get the grey loading screen the little wheel spins for mabye 15 sec, then the screen goes black and the monitor light flashes green. HOWEVER, I can hear the computer continue to load, and if i move the mouse around and click I can hear things being accessed.

Specs
1.25g Dual processor
ATI Radeon 9200 video card
2g ram

so I have done the PRAM thing, I took out all the ram, and reseated it, and I moved the video card to different slots, I also tested the other 2 connection on the card, still with the same result... the s- vid didnt even pull a signal.
