Mac Pro :: Special Screwdriver - Torx Or Hex?
Sep 18, 2008
I just acquired a G4 Power Mac and have noticed some odd screws I don't have tools for; maybe someone here has dealt with this before. I have searched the forums here and found a previous discussion about the main case screws near the handles. Someone said that they are 2.5mm hex, but on my case a 3mm hex fit perfectly. But the problem I have is with the really bitty hex screws that hold the keyboard together. The guy at the local hardware store was convinced that they are Torx, but the only torx we could get to fit, a T5, was rather loose and has now rounded off to the point where it won't do anything. And I am now convinced these ARE hex. But the size is in the 1.25mm range and I can't find any actual tools like that. I know for sure that .050" (1.27mm) is too big. The T5 torx measures .048". I suppose that the simple thing to do is file a .050" one down just enough to fit. Anybody know? There must be some special Apple tool for this.

I need one to upgrade my HDD. I don't have a shop near me and don't really want to wait for an ordered one. Could someone suggest how I could unscrew them without the screwdriver?

I am looking for a screwdriver or a bit that works to remove the battery in a mid-09 15" Macbook Pro. Instead of the typical tri-wing that Apple has used in the past, this screw is a 5-pointed torx with a post, requiring a special driver to remove it. It is a size-6 (TX6) bit, bit with the 5 points and the post, I cannot find a driver to remove it. Has anyone had success with this?

So I need to take apart my MBP and will need a tri wing screwdriver...BUT I don't own one. Is there a B&M store that sells these? I googled and honestly couldn't find anything but online shops. I live in California, so if anyone knows stores here that sell them, that would be great. Also, if there's any other "normal" screwdrivers that would get the job done just as well, I'd like to know about em.

Just a report on my successful upgrade from a Mac Pro 2006 2.66 quad (5150s) to a 3.00 quad (5160s). It was pretty easy, but I can't stress enough having the right tools, particularly the long, thin 3mm allen wrench. You need about 10" of length to get down to the heatsink nuts on the motherboard. I thought my adjustable screwdriver with extender would work, but the extender was too fat for the cutouts in the heatsink. You need a rod no more than 5/16" wide. Also, though people have said that a 15 Torx works (it does), I actually think the 3mm hex is the perfect fit. It may be tough finding these locally, even at a home depot, so you may want to buy online ahead of time unless you want to splurge and buy a set of long allen wrench keys (~$25 and up). The other challenge was connecting the lower heatsink's temperature sensor cable to the motherboard. If you have fat fingers like me, an angled hemostat or needlenose pliers will help you get into the tight space. And lastly, a small vacuum cleaner would be useful to suck all of the dust bunnies off the heatsinks and the fans and out of the motherboard's nooks and crannies. While you're in there, you might as well clean it out

I was wondering if anyone knew what size torx wrench needs to be used for the rails on the HDD in the unibody MBP? Is it a T6 or T8?

I have a problem which I couldn't solve for quite a while now. I bought a new WD Scorpio Blue 500 GB for my uMBP 13. I can't, however, figure out which screwdriver I need for those mounting screws that have to be removed in order to change the drives. I first bought a Torx 6 (Black & Decker TX 6) which is too big. I then ordered both a Torx 4 and Torx 5 from eBay. They are both too small... So what is wrong here? anyone had the same problem? Or any alternative solutions w/o using a Torx driver?

I'm upgrading my HD on my Macbook, I read that you need a Torx T9 and I also read a place that suggested a Torx T8. I was going to pick one up at the hardware store (I don't own either) and I was wondering which size is better? Or perhaps it just doesn't matter?

I've read tutorials on it, Ive downloaded it, played with it, uninstalled it. I have to be missing something here. To me it looks just like a more complicated way to get to programs and things you want. What am I missing? What does it really do? I don't get why everyone is so in love with this program. Everything online I find about it gushes about how great it is but always ends up boiling down to "it helps you open applications faster".

What's so special about Windows 7? I hear a lot of people saying really good things about it and some even go as far to say its better than OS X. Now, I haven't actually used it, but the new taskbar just seems like its a blown up version of quick launch. You see pictures of what windows you have open instead of words. Big deal. I have to admit the whole dragging windows to the edge of the screen thing is sort of cool. But just that won't make most people upgrade. Its nice that it's not supposed to throw stupid security messages at your face all day, though. What's the huge difference between Vista and 7?

After I have had the mac off overnight upon startup I hear the chime and the mac startups, but the screen remains grey. I did discover that if I press the green button on the iMac and put the unit to sleep for just a moment then awaken it, the monitor is fine. Tried zapping PRAM, fixing permissions, trashing system.plist. I thought it might be an energy saver issue but I cannot find the preference file for that.

Last month, my mac pro stopped working. I can still hear the chime but nothing loads in the scree. So i brought it to a service center and they told me it's problem with the video card and that I have to pay 500 dollars for that. I am hesitant to shell out that big amount of a cash. Been using the Mac for 3 years now. the video card is nvidia p435(says on the sticker) which i think is a 7300 gt. My question is, can I use PC video cards for this cause I find the similarity. Since it's PCI-e then it should fit and work. My only concern is if they is a special driver that needs to be installed.

I am very untechnical so much of what I have read on this matter is above my head, but in simple language, if I buy a new MAc Book Pro is there any way that I can use the 21.5" screen on my 2005 iMAc OS X as a monitor? I asked someone at Apple Store and was told that though later models were fully compatible, for one that old I would need special software, but he couldn't say what. An earlier thread posted last year that I didn't fully understand suggests that I don't need software.

I'm trying to rip a certain section of the "special features" disc that came with the original movie. The original movie is on the first DVD, and the second disc is all the bonus material. I tried ripping the special features disc in Handbrake, and I only got part of the bonus material, and not the material in particular I wanted. I've looked through all the source titles, and they only show part of the features. How do I get to the features I want using Handbrake?

Is it possible to add Special Characters into a document that I'm editing under 'Preview'? - I'm dragging and dropping the selected symbols onto the pdf from the Special Characters dialog box but they don't actually seem to appear on the document? - Do I need to set up some sort of layer to be able to do this?

I have a problem writing documents in Spanish and it is that I don't know how to use Spanish special characters and symbols used in MS Word, Text Edit or any other text editor in a Mac computer. I have to send status reports in Spanish to my Hispanic customers and I need to learn this before my work accumulates up to a point where I won't be able to catch up.
On a Windows PC it is relatively easy by using a combination of the ALT key and a three digits number that correspond to the letter and then it appears. How do I do it in a Mac?

I'm having a problem with special characters. I've downloaded some text files containing special characters from my country (Portugal), but these characters doesn't appear. I thought the problem were the files, but I opened the same files on Windows and the characters were there.I already went to system preferences, changed the keyboard inputs, changed the language, etc, but it didn't work.
