Mac Pro :: Cannot Control Th Screen Brightness With The F1 F2 Keys?
Nov 11, 2009
I am using a Samsung monitor so therefore cannot control th screen brightness with the F1 F2 keys.
I tried Shades but it messes with the colour making it look a little washed out and not good.
Are there any others I could try ?

I cannot control my screen brightness using the F5 and F8 keys. The only way I can adjust it is through System Preferences. I tried just F5 fn F5, Control F5, Option F5 and Command F5 and non work.

I don't know if anyone posted this issue before. I can not control screen Brightness on my MBP 13'. I tried my F1 and F2 key and the Nvidia Control Panel, either of them is working. I installed all the drivers from the CD and it can actually show the icon in the center(bottom) of the screen when I hit the F1 or F2 Key. However, the brightness adjust does not work, the screen stay the same.

I bought this c2d macbook pro 15'' in early 2007. Today I installed windows 7 on it (bootcamp 2.1). Everything worked perfect except the screen brightness control. The strongest level is very bright (same as the one in Mac), but the second level is very dim. I remember having this problem back in 2007 when I installed winxp on my mac. Looks like the problem still exists. Anyone here knows how to fix it?

I have dual ACD's. How do I make it so that both screens have the same brightness? If I adjust the brightness in the display settings it adjusts the main screen, but then not the other one. How do I make them the same?

The brightness goes up when you plug in your MBA, but then over time it just goes up and up. I honestly like my brightness pretty low (rarely more than half, typically at 3-5 notches), but it just keeps on going up and up. I almost never set it above half, but multiple times a day, I notice that it looks pretty high and it's at like 3/4 so I put it it down to about 1/3, but after a while, it's just up again.
Anyone else notice this? What is it, why does it do this? How can I fix it? I don't mind not having auto-brightness (even though I loved it), as long as my screen doesn't keep going up.

so I'm planning on buying and LED Cinema Display to go with my Mac Pro. I have a few issues before I pull the trigger...
Currently, I'm using a 23 inch Acrylic Cinema Display and have found that there is no way to adjust overall monitor brightness. Even using the ATi control panel (my Mac Pro has an Apple branded ATi 4870), there are no true brightness controls either on the software side in Windows (I haven't found a way to change brightness in Windows like I do in System Preferences in OSX) or on the hardware side (no buttons on the monitor itself).
Basically, as soon as I use bootcamp to reset into Windows, I notice that the screen immediately goes to the lowest brightness (even though I was running the max in OSX before switching) settings as soon as I go into the desktop. Playing games like this is irritating.
I know the LED Cinema Display also has no brightness buttons on it, so will I still be SOL?

It seems that the control keys for brightness (default F1 & F2 keys) and volume (default F3, F4 and F5 keys) have moved to another key combination. Don't ask me what I've done . I already tried Fn, but that did not help.
Does any know how to rearrange the keys to the default keys?

I have setup the 23i cinema display with mac pro. I have connected the USB and firewire cable to mac pro.. and keyboard is attached to back of the display. For some reason I cannot seem to adjust the brightness of the display from the keyboard (though I can do it from the side of the monitor). Neither can I see the brightness slider bar in the display settings. Also while the display is the the power led in the front blinks 3 times, then there is a little pause, and blinks 3 times again. How to fix this brightness control issue with the display. I have reseted PRAM and NVRAM... still nothing has changed. Also note I do not have and options tab for some reason.... (I have tried to plug the display's usb into the back 3 usb of the Macpro... still nothing)

I've got a 2009 Mac Pro with both a 4870 and a GT120, and I'm experiencing a strange bug with the brightness controls. The keyboard buttons only control one panel, and *both* of the sliders in the displays system preferences panels only control that same display. There is way to control the brightness of the other panel.
Here's a short clip of the problem:

When my laptop is connected to my Apple Keyboard, I can control the brightness with the F1 and F2 keys on my external Apple Keyboard. However, when I connect an external monitor to my MacBook Pro, the F1 and F2 keys no longer work.
Is there a way to control the brightness of my laptop's screen (NOT the external monitor) with my external Apple Keyboard even when an external monitor is plugged into my MacBook Pro?
I have the late 2008 uMBP.

I have a MBP with an apple wireless keyboard. The keyboard has brightness keys on it but they have recently stopped working. It is strange as the keys on the MBP still work but the ones on the bluetooth keyboard, placed exactly in the same spot (the wireless KB and the Macbook pro's KB are exactly the same), don't.

When I wake my Mac up from sleep, and attempt to change the brightness using the function keys, I see the brightness "image" pop-up on the screen, but when I try to lower it, the brightness doesn't change. The boxes quickly go down, but instantly go right back up to the original brightness. Running Mac OS X 10.6.4

The reason I am asking is that I am using a Spyder colorimeter to calibrate my monitor and it is asking me which controls exist on the display:
-brightness
-contrast
-backlight
My thinking is that F1 and F2 control the backlight level and not the "brightness" level, if you get what I mean.

I have a 15 inch aluminum macbook pro, Snow Leopard and recent updates all installed, but i noticed something on my friends 13 inch macbook pro that mine doesn't do.
On my friends, when you press the screen dim/bright button (F1, F2), its a gradual transistion, but on mine it just jumps down a notch.
For example, when you hold down the dim button on my friends MBP, it the screen dims in a similar way as to when you put your finger over the iSight camera, it fades to a dimmer screen.

The issue is with the brightness keys and the brightness slider controls. It appears that after the 10.4 upgrade the main LCD on some PBs and iBooks stops working. In my case the attached screen lost the ability to adjust brightness, but my external 20" LCD is fine. It looks like two things have happened. The association between the keys (F1 and F2) and the code for controlling brightness somehow got disconnected and/or the "capability" of the mac to adjust the brightness of the attached LCD got lost in the upgrade. We've tried repair permissions, rebooting, new users to no avail.

I have a 2011 (?) macbook air and ever since my trip to the genius bar for a battery issue my function keys don't work after I wake it up (just opening screen). May also be related to last firmware update?
I have checked the function key mapping in settings and they are normal. The volume key launches Expose and the brightness keys (and others) don't do anything. A reboot helps but only untill the first time I put it to sleep (close/open lid).

Really stumped by this. Recently (I think it was after a MacOS update but I'm not sure) my brightness and volume keys stopped working on my 2011 13" MacBook Air running MacOS 10.9.4. The F keys still work i.e. if I press Fn-F10, I get the expected effect from pressing F10, but if I just press F10, volume remains unchanged (should get muted). Mission Control, Launchpad, and media keys (rewind, play/pause, ff) all work.
Using Karabiner, I checked to make sure the keys generate correct events. They do. Pressing the brightness keys generates 0x3 and 0x2. Pressing the volume keys generates 0x7, 0x1, and 0x0, which are the expected key codes defined in ev_keymap.h, the header file for HID. I can also adjust volume and brightness using the sliders in the appropriate section of "System Preferences."
So volume and brightness itself can be changed. They keyboard keys themselves work and produce correct keycodes. But whatever operating system feature (HID?) that is supposed to read the keyboard input and translate it into commands to the display and sound drivers doesn't work.
I've tried all the obvious stuff (restart, safe mode, toggle the Function key option in System Preferences->Keyboard). I've reset SMC and PRAM. Nothing has worked so far.
The only other thing I can think of is that a while back (before this problem started occuring) I got annoyed by the power button in the top-right corner of the keyboard, which I would occasionally hit accidentally. I searched for a way to disable it, and I think I found something -- now it only does something if it's held for 2 seconds. A quick up-down strike does not do anything. Perhaps in tweaking some setting to achieve this behavior (I don't remember what I did), I screwed up something with the brightness/volume keys, but this screw up only became evident later.

I have a 24inch LCD ACD display connected to my Mac Pro. This display all used to work OK, but now, read on. I had to send this 24inch LCD ACD display away to have the panel replaced. Since it has returned when I look in About This Mac/Displays it shows that I have an iMac connected as the display and now the brightness cannot be controlled. If the 24inch LED ACD is connected to my Macbook it all works as it should

A few minutes ago I noticed that my MBA's keyboard was not lighting up as it's supposed to. A little experimenting and I found the solution (you may kick yourself, this is so simple):
The F5 key decreases keyboard brightness.
The F6 key increases keyboard brightness.
The icons on these two keys are the clue.
