Mac Pro :: Westmere EP Vs I7-980X - Intel Core Processor

Jul 27, 2010

the Westmere-EP vs. The i7-980X? It looks as though the Westmere-EP is pretty much identical to the i7-980X so why use the Westmere in the Mac Pro vs the i7http://ark.intel.com/Compare.aspx?ids=47917,47932,Name1. Mac Pro :: 3.33GHz 6-Core Or The 2.4GHz 8-Core Westmere?

Oct 8, 2010

They're both Intel Xeon Westmere's, but I was planning on buying the 8-core today. However, another commentator mentioned the 3.33GHz 6-core Westmere being a faster/better choice than the 2.4GHz 8-Core Westmere. Is this due to the 1 6-Core processor versus 2 Quad-Core processors and how the system utilizes threading, etc of each?

Mac Pro :: Upgrading To A 3.33 6-core Westmere

Oct 27, 2010

I bought the the 2010 Mac Pro after much debating on whether to build a hackintosh or not.I bought the low end model from B&H Photo given it was the best price for the low end model and secondly knowing that I would be upgrading it.I bought the W3680 3.33 GHz westmere from an eBay seller for $899 plus shipping. This was cheaper than either the 980x non xeon version or the Newegg w3680 (or most other site prices for the w3680) which seems hard to find. Overall, even if I could not sell the 2.8GHz w3530 xeon which came with the machine I would be out $899 vs $1200 plus tax from Apple (about a $400 outright saving).

Mac :: RAM For 6 Core Westmere Pro In 3x1GB Modules

Oct 10, 2010

I've read many of the threads regarding RAM pricing and configurations for the 6-Core systems. I planned on ordering my Pro with 6Gb instead of the default 3GB, but my friend at Apple forgot when he placed the order. what I understand RAM module placement and type may significantly impact system performance for this platform. As I need to double the RAM, should I purchase 3x1GB modules to add or purchase 3x2GB models and sell the 3x1 that came with the system? Also, which is the best RAM retailer, OWC, Crucial, etc?

Mac Pro :: 3.33 GHz Westmere 6 Core Xeon Upgrade

Apr 14, 2010

I'm getting so bored of waiting for Apple to bring out a new Mac Pro. So I'm now thinking why it's not possible to upgrade the processors in my dual 2.66 quad core Intel Xeon Nehalem to the new Westmere 3.33 GHz 6 core Xeon processors.They run the same voltage range so the existing power supply should be fine, have the same 1366 socket and can use the same RAM specs. Cooling should be fine as wel However, will the motherboard in the dual Nehalem Mac's run Westmere processors? Does the BIOS need to be upgraded? Would a 3rd party motherboard run them instead?I'm gathering no one has done this yet.

MacBook :: Lack Of RAM - Dual Core Processor - NVIDIA GeForce 9400M

Nov 26, 2010

With the Introduction of Civilization V for the Mac and its huge need for power. Now i'm not gonna attempt to try to play this game. But I downloaded Ship Simulator Extreme on my windows partition. Now on Steam it has the system requirements.

OS: Windows XP (Min. service pack 2), Windows Vista or Windows 7. 32 and 64 bits OS supported
Processor: 3 Ghz P4 Intel or AMD equivalent processor
Memory: 2GB (Windows XP) or 3GB (Vista or Windows 7)
Hard Disk Space: 3.5 GB
Video Card: Geforce 8800GT or ATI Radeon 4850 with 256MB ram (At least Shader model 3.0)
Sound: DirectX compatible
DirectX: 9.0c

I have a MacBook Aluminium, Intel Core 2 Due 2.0GHz with 2GB Ram and NVIDIA 9400M. The game plays incredibly slowly and keeps jumping, like the refresh rate is so slow. I have downloaded the latest driver from NVIDIA but still it plays slow. Is my problem here the lack of RAM and I have a dual core processor which is above the requirements? I thought the good video card and processor would be enough? A lot of games seem to have minimum requirements much more than my mac, its not ever that old and seems outdated already.

Mac Pro :: 2010 MP - I7 980X Upgrade New Ram

Nov 18, 2010

I purchased a 2010 base quad 2.8 model.

After burning it in for a few days, I have incrementally upgraded various components, and now I have added various drives/CPU/RAM that I had on hand.

CPU: i7 980X (yes, I lose ECC support)RAM: OCZ 1600MHz triple channel kit (non ECC)

Everything is incredible, really.. but I have one issue. The memory kit is recognized as 1066, when I expected it to run at 1333. My guess is that the MP doesn't recognize the values it's being passed (1600) so it defaults to 1066. Is this correct? Any way I can force it to 1333, as I know it's more than capable.

Is it possible that I'm being forced to 1066 because it's a 980X and not the Xeon equivalent?

IMac :: Which One Is Better/an 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Or An 2.8 GHz Intel Quad Core?

Dec 18, 2009

first, I didnt know if this thread should be here or in Buying Tips, but anyway. My doubt is about the brand new 27 iMacs processor, If I should buy a more GHz one, but with only two cores, or should I buy little bit less GHz one, but with four cores.

It really worth pay $200 more? It really worth the four cores? My main needs are run CS4, some Final Cut, maybe Logic Studio, and switch between different OS's (OS X, Windows, and Linux). I think even a 21.5 model would be more than enough, but I just wonder If Quad Core gonna give me more power (I hope so).
