Mac Pro :: Making Rolling / Rickety Sound That Sustained
Jun 9, 2009
So I have a 2.66 Nehalem, 12 gigs of RAM, the upgraded Radeon. 3 WD Black 1 TB internal drives. Every so often the machine will make a soft, rolling, rickety sound, which is sustained for minutes on end, before slowly rolling away. What Could This Sound Mean?

For some odd reason, I have been experiencing some creaking when I move the display of my Unibody 15.5" Macbook Pro. At all. It just is very annoying, as it has a distinct plastiky sound to it, and it was not there to begin with. I don't know if this matters, but I have a Speck clear case that I used, but then I took it off because it seemed to be twisting the display a bit. Is this creaking a known issue with the Unibodies, or is it just because of the Speck case? I have never dropped my computer, and it has never been mistreated. It just leads its life on my desk or in my laptop bag. Any ideas?

Every time I depress my trackpad (the one built into my MBP 15" mid 2009) It is doing a slight squeak...Now I'm meticulous about how well I keep my beloved MBP... but I do use it everyday for many things (Including design, word processing, accounts, pwning the microsoft network at my office)
But I am guessing that these things are built to last... and shouldn't have an effect on how much I have used it right... Should I take it to Apple and let them have a look at it is there a quick thing that I can do to mend it? Or should I just get over it and accept it as quirk of it's character?

Never mind my intentions or motivation, Pro Tools HD 8 isnt qualified for 10.6.8 and was running perfect with 10.6.7 and I need to get back to it or else Im going to fall behind and start losing money on the projects Im working on... Really, what I and everyone else interested need to know is how to do it precisely, without losing any pre-installed data, just like when I updated. I just downloaded 10.6.7 combo update because I only have the 10.6.6 CD.. And Im making data backups and cloning my existing OS to a different drive using CCC, just in case. By the way, the apple article about restoring is useless, seeing how it pertains to Lion now and this involves OSX, and Im not trying to "restore" my system, implying something malfunctioned, plus I never set up time machine.Â

I have a Blu-ray file (one I own and wanted on hdd for easy transport) on my computer. I want it to play on my Xbox 360 and it won't because it has 5.1 surround sound. Inside the file is the 2.0 audio track separate with instructions on how to merge/change it using a program called Yamb. The only problem is that it's Windows only. Do any of you know a program (preferably free) that can do this for Mac?
I have Toast Titanium 10 and toyed with it for awhile but couldn't figure it out.

My wired Mighty Mouse has started to click a lot. It is very annoying. Sounds like a small relay closing randomly. If I lift it up off the pad it stops. Has anyone else had this happen?

Every 20 minutes or so, I hear a strange sound as though I've pressed the wrong key or something. I've tried closing all of my apps as well as restarting my computer but I keep hearing it. It is literally driving me crazy.

I've bought my iMac in December 2011 and everything was functionating just fine untill 1 month ago. My iMac started to make clicking sounds for around 5-10 seconds, the interval between these sounds is usually half an hour to one hour. I personally think that it comes from the right side (the one with the CD/DVD entrance). I'd like to know what it causing this, how I can get this fixed and if it could be harmful to my iMac. I'll contact some premium resellers tomorrow and ask if they know what I can do about it. Â

Whenever an application uses the internet, such as Opera, Safari or aMSNn the speakers create a static, crackling sound thats incredibly annoying. The only way to get rid of it is to shut down the app that makes it (usually aMSN or Safari) but it may start again soon. It must be an issue wtih the speakers as it doesn't have any effect on headphones.

For the past few days my MBP has been slow. Ridiculously slow. Beachballing to open safari etc. I have just noticed that as it tries to load things it makes a weird sound. A short burring sounds followed by a long one then a short one. Don't know if that is relevant. Earlier today it froze so i had to do a hard shutdown (hold down the power button) and then it wouldn't boot. I ended up booting it off the snow leopard disc. This problem seemed to start when i started playing wow again but i had it installed for a long time. Could this be heat related?

I have an early 05 PowerMac Dual 2.3 machine that's making some intermittent clicking noises over the last few months. There's no pattern - sometimes it happens every few minutes, sometimes it won't happen for hours. The clicking sound is loud - and is accompanied by, what I can only describe as, a bit of a buzz sound. At first I thought it could be my HDD or superdrive, but I think the click is way too loud. Now the question - is this my power supply getting ready to give? The machine does not fall in the range of the power supply repair program. I'm already in the process of adding a second HDD to clone my main drive just in case.

Title says it all.. It'll feel like there's a bit of resistance to moving it and when it does it makes a rather loud cracking/creaking noise. After I've just done it, it won't happen again until I leave it sitting in one position for a while. 13" MBP Is it going to break and if it does will apple replace it?

I know this question or thread has been asked a lot, but I started noticing yesterday that my mbp has been making this weird ticking sound. It was a light clicking sound, and it happened on and off. However, it was bothering me so I went to best buy (where I bought my macbook) and told them about it; they said they couldn't do anything for me because it probably wasn't my hard drive. They told me to wait until my computer slows down and then bring it in. But today the sound got worse, it sounds like white noise from the tv or some static from a really bad connection. It usually happens when I turn it on and while I'm using it. Some of my friends think it's over-heating but I doubt that's the case?

So I have an old imac running OSX 10.3.9 and recently it started making a whoosh sound randomly at will. It sounds like a whiffle ball bat missing the ball. Also for no apparent reason it started saying "you have logged in" every time I wake it up. Any clue how to make these annoying sounds go away and or what may have started them?

I've had my imac for under two years, and just recently I noticed it making an odd humming/buzzing sound at times. It's not the normal sound you hear when your hard drive is working hard, it's definitely different. It's not the speakers either, it happens whether they are on or muted.
My suspicion may be that it has something to do with the power. That's because I've been bug testing a mac beta game, and it often crashes my computer, and I have to manually turn off my computer by holding down the power button until it cuts the power.
Does anyone know why this may be and how I can prevent it/fix it?

I just had a question about my fan, whenever I'm on my computer for about 30 minutes plus, my fan starts making a kind of grinding sound, and my computer exceeds 200F. I do play World of Warcraft, and I know this most likely causes the heating issue, but it only started about 2 months ago. And i bought my Mac mid-2009 and have had no problems until now.

My Macbook Pro is not starting past the grey screen and the apple logo and the rolling circle. I have tried every method and I am desperate to do anything to start my computer even erase the entire disc. I have contacted the Apple store and they told me the cost will be equivalent to $600 to just repair it and no way I will be able to afford it. I am willing to do anything and even erase my entire disc. However, for that the instructions on the Apple page state that 'Insert your Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5 installation disc'. However, I do not have my installation disc Is there any other way I can erase the OS system and at least reboot my Macbook?

but anytime someone pounds on the table and I have my 12' iBook just chilling on it, it makes a resetting noise, a very mechanical sound that makes it seem like it's resetting itself once. I have no idea why, and I just beg people around me to regulate their anger.
However, even when I am picking up my iBook it'll make the noise. Is this a sign of a deteorating cd-rom drive? Or are most iBooks and Apple laptops like this?

So I just partitioned my drive to install Windows and noticed that my hard drive is now making that "crunching" sound that some hard drives make. It started during my Windows installation, and it happens regularly in Windows.
I also briefly hear it while OSX is starting up, but it doesn't seem to happen much in OSX. I've launched a bunch of applications and it is still pretty much silent.
Any ideas what could cause this? Could it be NTFS? I have several hard drives in my PC that don't make that sound. I am using a 17" MacBook Pro unibody with the regular 320gb 5400rpm drive that it comes with.
