Mac Pro :: Lion: Restart And Shut Down Processes Hang?

Apr 28, 2012

After "upgrading" to Lion, my MacPro refuses to complete either a Restart or Shut Down cycle.  How can I discover what is hanging up the process?  System: MacPro1,1; 8GB RAM, OS X 10.7.3, 4x2TB internal drives, all software updates applied.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Why MBP Does Not Shut Down / Restart Anymore

Jun 5, 2012

Ever since I have upgraded to Lion from Snow Leopard, sometimes MacBook Pro doesn't shutdown or restart. I choose shutdown or restart it logs me out then there is the gray screen with the turning little dotted circle and it doesn't reboot or turn off, so I have to hold the power button and manually turn it off.

In Lion, when restarting, many apps restart as well and open up many docs, slowing startup with stuff I don't want. I have unchecked the "restore windows when quitting and re-starting" box in system preferences>general. There has been no effect. Now what?

Mac Mini :: System Hangs At Gray Screen On Shut Down / Beach Ball Delaying Certain Processes

Sep 1, 2009

I have the 2.53ghz with 4gigz of Ram MacMini from Xmas 2009.A few of you know that I had been trying out different SSD's before finally jumping on with OWC 60gig SSD. I've had it for about 2 months now and it works great except I've recently been having my computer freeze and the beach ball of death appears constantly when on Safari and sometimes iMovie. After shutting down the computer manually, sometimes booting up will leave me at the grey screen for minutes before i shut it down and wait maybe 30 mins before i fire it up again, which usually works 9/10 times.

I also noticed the beach ball delaying certain processes like loading Safari or a webpage. For example, I have my OWC External hooked up via FireWire800 with just my music and videos, however occasionally if im browsing thru websites or loading a program it'll cycle the external and have the beachball as if trying to load something before proceeding. It is more an annoyance than a problem.

I ran disk utility on all my drives as well as the Apple Hardware Test CD to see if maybe my Logic Board was the problem. I did the general test as well as the indepth test, both show negative signs of a problem. Can anyone shed some light on what could be the problem?Should I put the factory drive back in and take it to Apple to run their diagnostic test?Could the SSD be failing? (I could RMA it, but didn't know if its an Apple issue vs OWC)

MacBook Air :: Hang On Shutdown And Restart?

Jun 25, 2008

It's been happening for a while now and I had hoped 10.5.3 would fix. When I choose to restart or shutdown, 90% of the time it hangs on grey screen after logging out and I have to hold down power button to shutdown. No apps hanging. Also have problem where when I open the cover to bring my MBA out of standby mode, I'll be presented with the logon screen. I'll type my password and my screen goes blank like it's gone back to sleep but the power light is fully lit. Have to close cover, wait till it goes on standby, then open cover to bring up password logon again. Should I reinstall OS X again?

OS X :: MBP Cannot Shut Down / Log Out Or Restart?

Jun 10, 2009

My early 08 MBP has seemed to have lost the ability to do the above 3 functions. Pressing the power button does not bring up the shut down/restart/sleep menu and going through the menu bar and clicking "shut down" does nothing either. Pressing cmd + shift + Q does nothing when it used to bring up the log out option. It's only been like this the past few days, I noticed when I was prompted to reboot for the SMC update but OSX did nothing after I clicked the reboot button. The only way to shut down or reboot is to perform a forced shut down.

I've repaired disk permissions, repaired the disk, reset the SMC and the PRAM but nothing has worked.

MacBook Pro :: Can't Get To Shut Down Or Restart

Jun 4, 2014

Finder is refusing to let me shut down my macbook.

I have tried multiple ways to try and get my mac book pro to shut down, but every time finder pops up and tells me that "there are operations still running, quit them and then try again" something along those lines. I've tried to end processes in the activity moniter, I've done the command + option + escape and the window pops up and shows there is nothing running. I've also tried to hold down the power button for 7 seconds and it still says I am unable to shut down my computer because there are processes still running.

I really don't want my computer battery fried by having it on all day, every day.

PowerPC :: G4 Locked Up - Cannot Restart After Shut Down

Jan 26, 2009

My PowerBook G4 15" alu 1.25 ghz locked up out of nowhere the other night (while only running firefox). Couldn't even force quit, so after a long wait I manually shut it down. Then I couldn't get it going again. I pulled the battery, let it sit overnight, and then it started up, only to freeze up again in 30 minutes. Same routine yesterday (though it lasted an hour or so).

I live in Germany and the only Apple store is hours away. And of course my Apple Care is expired. I've zapped the PRAM, reset the PMU, ran first aid on disk utilities (everything came back OK), but I'm freaking out. This thing is seriously important to me, and I can't afford to replace it. I've read plenty of speculation that it could be the logic board, or that it's locking up from overheating, or maybe the hard drive is going bad (though the tests come back OK).

OS X :: Snow Leopard Not Shut Down Or Restart

Oct 13, 2009

I'm running a 2007 silver Imac and just upgraded to SL. Aside from all my apple aps (ie. logic pro studio 8) running slower than molasses rolling up a hill. My mighty mouse (wired) jumping to the corner of the screen all the time and WiFi won't stay connected to my router for more than a few hours at a time (when this happens it also likes to ask me for the password it already knows and rejects it when i reenter it?

And my computer won't shut down or restart? I read in another thread about this happening with multiple accounts and a log out being needed but I don't have other accounts. So I have nothing to log out from? I'm super disappointed and am tempted to switch to windows 7, but I've already invested a small fortune into my apple and apple exclusive software like the looser that I am. And you'll be saving a perfectly good computer from being thrown out the window.

OS X :: Dock Disappeared - Can't Restart / Shut Down

Dec 2, 2009

I've been happily in love with my iMac since 2006. Never had any problems.

Just got back from working abroad over a month and my business partner (new to Mac) has been using my computer. Apparently the computer was switched on nearly 24/7 and only been restarted a couple of times.

At first everything seemed fine until I ran the software update.

First problem, there was an error when doing the security update so couldn't complete the whole update.

iMac still working fine though..

First, it took ages to startup, then the dock didn't load. Tried restarting at first, didn't respond, shutting down neither....

Then when opening finder, the menus on the left hand side, Hard Drive, Documents, Music, etc... all gone...

Most applications won't open... even some jpegs, pdfs, etc...

Also the DiskImageMounter, Terminal and probably loads of other stuff has disappeared I'm not even aware of...

Tried to open 'About this Mac'... no response...

Tried to open.. 'Mac OSX Software' the following message appeared... Your system settings are being updated. Unable to open your preferred Web browser. Try again in a few minutes.

I've looked at the utilities folder, checked the CoreServices, tried 'killall Dock' (discovered that the terminal utility disappeared), etc, etc.

MacBook Pro :: Can't Logout , Restart Or Shut Down

Feb 14, 2012

SOME ago, I came across a strange problem on my macbook pro: I wast able to log out, restart or shut down using the apple menu, nor using the power button, which just won't respond. When I try to restart, nothing just happens. No spinning wheel, nothing. The only way to restart is to use sudo reboot in the Terminal. This problem started short after I installed a program called FontForge, but uninstalling it didnt help, nor did recovering the system from an older Time Machine backup (from the time before I installed the FontForge). Finaly I thought it could be something about the SMC and I reseted both it and the PRAM, but without any success. Then I did a re-installation of Mac OS X Lion using Lion recovery, but still no difference and now Im beginning to feel quite clueless.

Intel Mac :: Does Not Shut Down Or Restart Properly

Apr 1, 2012

My iMac 27inch, Mid 2010 2.93 ghz i7 running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3, doesn't shut down or restart properly. Once I choose the option in apple menu it goes into white screen with a wheel spinning, it freezes there. The only to proceed is by manually holding the power button. Checked and repaired all disk permissions in standard and recovery mode, reset PRAM and SMC, did couple of cleaning procedures of cache and relative, did a whole virus running procedure. Cant figure out what has happened. It happens after I operate computer after turning it on, but it does shutdown and restart if its done straight away after turning it on without opening anything. I tried to monitor maybe it some software that makes act like that, but didn't find a link.

IMac :: No Shut Down / Restart Or Logout Users

Nov 12, 2010

I often have an issue where my iMac won't shut down, restart or logout users. Basically, when I click Shut Down or Restart, the desktop icons disappear as if the computer's getting ready to shut down (the desktop wallpaper remains) and it just sits there and won't shut down. I have to hold down the power button on the back of the computer in order to get the computer to shut off. This often happens when I try to logout a user. I'd say this happens about 2/3 to 3/4 of my attempts to shut down or logout a user.

OS X :: IMac 10.5.7 - Frozen On Restart - Forced Shut Down

May 13, 2009

I downloaded Mac OS X 10.5.7 from the Apple website rather than using Software Update only to save time. I used Software Update to get 10.5.7 on my MacBook Pro and it took 35 minutes to download the package. Using the Apple website for my iMac, the download took about 15 minutes.

I then began the installation of 10.5.7 on the iMac. Everything went fine until it was time to restart. The computer froze on restart. I had to hold down the power button to turn off the iMac. Then I started it up and it began to load for quite a while (normal after an update). Then I logged in and went to "About This Mac" and it read that I had Mac OS X 10.5.7.

Obviously, this is an unorthodox way of updating. But am I safe with this method? Was it just a minor glitch?

Software :: IBook G4 With Tiger 10.4.11 Won't Restart Or Shut Down?

May 12, 2009

When I select Restart or Shut Down from the Apple menu, all of my apps close, but then it just sits there showing the desktop pattern. The cursor remains live. Nothing else happens. I have to hit ctrl-opt-power to force a power down.

This happens regardless of which account I'm logged into. (I have an extra "safety" account that I never use for anything. It has admin privileges.)

It also happens if I click Restart or Shut Down in the Login screen.

It also happens if I force reboot into Safe Mode and then try to Restart or Shut Down.

This iBook (see sig below) has a brand new HD in it, and I just spent an entire day doing a fresh reinstall of Tiger and all of my apps.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: See What Processes Are Using The Memory?

Apr 25, 2012

I recently added more RAM to my system and I always keep Activity Monitor running with the memory usage icon on the Dock to see how much Lion and my programs use. I noticed that even several CS5 programs running at the same time won't use that much, the program I've seen uses the most is Aperture, using anywhere from 500MB on start to 2.5GB while viewing--not editing--photos.

My questions is, when my system is running normally it uses from a quarter to half the total memory available but just now it's using more than three quarters and it's running not even half programs I use everyday. I quickly added up the memory being used and it's just missing out A LOT. I'm adding a screenshot of Activity Monitor for you to see.

I now that restarting the system (or by using the purge command in Terminal) will free up memory but this really puzzles me and I'd really like to know what's happening--BTW, even though several GB are missing, the computer is nowhere nears slow, at least. Where are all the other processes using the rest of the memory? I'm using OS X 10.7.3 Server with 16GB of RAM on an iMac.

Such things as double tapping the URL bar to hi-light the whole url so i can just retype w/e site i want to go to. Every time i restart or turn off or my mbp goes to sleep and i reopen it, the double tap function resets. So i'm forced to go to the system preferences > trackpad> "double-click speed" to slowest in order to get my double tap to hi-light anything again. Is there something wrong with my mbp? Or is there a way i can save the settings when i put the double-click speed to slow so that it wont reset every time my mbp needs to be woken up or restarted?
