I have decided to go with an SSD for my OS & apps. Currently I have a 500gb HD as OS/Apps, 2 1TB drives in Bay 2+3 running Raid 1, and Bay 4 just another misc HD. I'm wanting to know, can I just take that drive out of the Mac Pro and install the SSD with the Icy Dock, start it up and install Snow Leopard? Is there anything else prior to this that I need to do, besides obviously back up? What about my raid drives, will these auto-detect once Snow Leopard is installed on the SSD? Also, are there any other recommendations when running the SSD? I've read all kinds of different opinions about TRIM and performance. etc. Anything else I should be concerned about? I have recently picked up a very inexpensive 1gig thumb drive (yes, they are practically giving them away anymore). It came with some proprietary software for downloading and installing apps, but it only functions on a PC. I'm looking for suggestions on apps that people may use or have used on thumb drives that can be very useful in day to day life, and I'm working off of several OS's. (Mac OSX, Windows XP, and Ubuntu Dapper Drake.) I was also thinking about installing DSL on the thumb drive.
I was planning on installing Win7 on it and using Parallels for the times I have no Mac option (specific games or apps).
Should I install it as a boot camp partition and then link it in Parallels or just do a clean VM install in Parallels? I'm curious as to what the experiences are and what is my best course of action when my machine shows up.
How would I install applications that I currently have on a CD onto the MacBook Air? For instance, MS Office 2008. How can I fully install it (with the license key, etc.).
I am trying to install themes from interfacelift and it looks like I have to use shapshifter to do so. I'm having a heck of a time getting this app to install let alone work properly. So what are you folks doing to install themes on your mac. I am currently on Leopard 10.5.8.
I hadn't got round to installing Photoshop on my Mac and I misplaced my discs while moving house. If I download a trial version and use my licence key, am I getting the full product? What is a safe site to download a Photoshop demo? My license key is for CS3.
I just finished up a fresh install of Windows 7 and downloaded and installed the NVidia driver from their site directly since the one in the Boot Camp files is pretty old and technically the Vista driver anyway.
But I still need the Brightness, Sound, etc key functionality. Is there a way to selectively install Boot Camp drivers? That's the only one I need. The wireless, chipset, video and everything else works just fine (and in some cases better) than the ones included in Apple's setup.
Recently just bought a macpro and my roommate had a copy of office. I installed it, but it reached the max capacity of installations already so I uninstalled it and bought a new copy and new product key. Everything works great, but when I am on the same network as my roommate and try to open up a MS application, it tells me that I have reached the max capacity for installations under my roommates product key. The installation process does not ask to me to input my new product key so I am on why it is telling me I am still on his and what I need to do next.
I recently installed Creative Suite 5. After installation, my "Applications" folder is completely empty. In finder on the sidebar, I can click on applications and voila, all of my applications are there but when I go to users and click on my name and the Applications folder (along with downloads, library, etc.) show up, the applications are not there.
I keep running into applications that I can't run because the installer downloads as separate files.
It'll have a file with all sorts of pieces to the program but nothing that brings it together to run it. If there is it's only an autorun- I try the autorun(.inf) and it says there's no application specified to run it.
I have run across these types of applications more times than I can count. Every time I can't find how to make them work, and so I have to give up on them. These programs I download ARE made for Macs, so it's very frustrating- I don't understand. My husband said those types simply can't be run on a mac.
I've got a friend still running Leopard 10.5 but he wants to install FaceTime. I know FaceTime requires 10.6.4 but I wanted to get your input on any hacks that might get it to run on 10.5.
I'm a n00b hacker and modified the plist file within the app and set the OS minimum to 10.5 but it still fails to run. Is there anything anyone else has tried that's worked? Should I be looking in other areas within the mpkg file or .app ?
I've got a few .pkg files that I'd like to install, but I don't have permissions. Is there a way I can get around this without the admin name and password? I don't have access to Applications, either. I usually just drag the programs into a separate folder so I don't have to keep the disc image. And if you need to know what I'm trying to install, it's Mac MSN 8.
I've tried installing Final Cut Express 4 on my Macbook. I run Tiger. It can't be done. Just after I choose the hard drive for the installation, it starts installing for a split second and then stops saying that an error occurred and that I have to start all over again. Can anyone help me with this? Maybe the Final Cut Express 4 isn't compatible with Tiger?
I've been experiencing crashes when using iMovie '09, as well as most of the applications I use on a daily basis. My Finder has been crashing a lot as well after I installed iLife. This occurs a couple of times a day, and the error reports give the exception codes "KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at ... " and other variants of that. What is causing this? How can I fix it?
I feel like some crashes are due to the fact that I need more memory but I don't know about all the others.
I have been trying for weeks to install a trial version of Illustrator CS4 in my computer, but it says this :"Beta or pre-release versions of the following products are installed on this machine, and must be uninstalled before this installation can proceed.Adobe Illustrator CS4Please uninstall these products, restart your computer and then run this installer again."
When I try to install iTunes 9 I get the following message: "System extension cannot be used. The system extention "/system/library/extensions/CDSDAudioCaptureSupport.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update". ITunes installs anyway - even if I leave the message there without clicking "OK". I have verified my disk and repaired the permissions - yet still pops up.
My mom re-invented herself and decided to use my laptop..thats fine with my but she got this ability to mess up with stuff so i created an account on my MB so she can log in under her name but my account is in english and hers not..how do i install two firefoxes in 2 different languages? When I install FF when logged in as she it will change the localization of my FF.
I have a new MacBook and I downloaded Veoh TV. When I downloaded Veoh TV it said I needed to download Perian to play certain videos. And I downloaded Perian Version 1.2
The problem is I don't think it's working. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it. And whenever I try to watch videos on my Veoh TV it says I need to install Perian.
I just bought my mac and was previously using a PC so I am still new to the Mac and am unsure if I installed it wrong or something.
Before I installed Parallels 5, I had a 2.4ghz 13" MBP w/ 4GB RAM that was dual-booting Windows XP. I then installed Parallels, and instead of installing an OS from a CD (I have Win7 fresh install CD), I decided to instead install Windows XP onto my VM from Bootcamp since my specs aren't as fast and I heard Win7 may lag a bit more than XP.
My question is, in the future if I want to install Win7, what would happen in these 2 scenarios: 1. I install Win7 onto my bootcamp partition (would my parallels copy of windows become corrupt/unusable?) 2. I install Win7 onto VM via Parallels
i have a intel core i 5- 27 inch imac running snowleopard and i am trying to instal final cut pro 4 but the program is saying my pc is not powerful enough and i need a g4 what can i do to get it running it also has a really weird start up bug with qmaster saying it is a start up security breach... This is the first time i have ever had mac act like a windows machine everything has been so plug in play this program is not
I recently got a powerbook g4, and it was running on Mac OS X 10.4. I knew that wasn't the latest version, so I bought a mac box set. My applications were fine they all open and were fine. I installed mac os x 10.5 the next day and it took a few tries to install. When it was done I installed ilife. I have had so many problems with my computer ever since I installed those programs. My ichat, iphoto, mail, address book, and ical won't open. I get the message " the application.... unexpectedly quit." This is my first mac computer and I'm not sure what to do. I also get that message when I'm in the middle of the software updates. I have to find them on the apple website to download them.
I am still on Tiger, mainly because I really like its feel and simplicity as compared to Leopard or Snow Leopard, and its been fine up until recently because it did everything I needed. Recently, I've been encountering more frequently apps that I want to try but that are only available on 10.5+.I have a Leopard CPU Drop-in Disk, and am thinking about upgrading soon, however, I am using a 120 GB HDD that is getting close to being full, and I am concerned that installing a new OS would eat up some of that precious available HDD spaceDoes anyone know what the size difference is between Tiger and Leopard or between Tiger and Snow Leopard? If it's more than 4 GB, I don't think it is really worth it to me.
I was using Rosetta Stone without a problem for over a month. Now when i try to start it up it freezes with the screen saying "Installing Updates". In the Console I get this message
"Rosetta Stone[73642] Warning once: This application, or a library it uses, is using
NSQuickDrawView, which has been deprecated. Apps should cease use of QuickDraw and move to Quartz."
I tried to repair permissions but it changed nothing.
Just installed a new router - a D-Link Dir-825. I am unable to load anything in Safari or Chrome, and Mail will not go online. Only Firefox works. I've flushed my DNS cache in Terminal (I think...) but that didn't work. D-Link does not "support Safari".
I am running 10.3.9 on a PowerBook G4. I installed a bunch of fonts (through Font Book) about 2 years ago, and since that time some of my apple apps freeze from time to time. Namely, Calculator, Text Edit and Safari. I also noticed that in this state, the AutoUpdates don't download. I found a solution of overwriting the required system fonts (especially Keyboard and LastResort), then rebooting. Normally, this sets it right.
However, now my Installer is freezing (trying to install a new Adobe product), as well as Disk Utility. (This means I can't fix those permissions or do First aid, since the Disk Utility freezes). I have not tried reinstalling OS X yet. Might this be related to "Helvetica Neue"?
