My iMac is running incredibly slow. Takes 5 to 7 minutes to load just about everything. I can't get on Internet because then my wifi shuts down.

PowerPC :: IBook Running Extremely Slow?

Nov 13, 2007

I was recently given a (supposedly) non-functional iBook. I reinstalled Tiger on it, and it did fine through the installation and initial startup. However, everything runs really, really slow. It will work normally for about 5 seconds, and then slow to a crawl. Opening system preferences just took 5 minutes. The beach ball shows up with nearly every click.

Anyone know what this means? Bad ram? Bad HD? It is the 14" 1.42 ghz model with 756 mb ram.

Oh yeah, the reason it was presumed dead was because the previous owner smacked it on something, and the LCD screen is bashed up. The rest of it seems physically fine, but it was subject to some sort of impact.

Software :: Finder Running Extremely Slow At Certain Points

Feb 14, 2009

I am using a MacBook Pro which has the following:
Processor - 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory - 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Mac OS X - Version 10.4.11

Today my finder started to run extremely slow at certain points. When I attempt to look in a folder that contains files that are greater than a couple of megabites it can take up to 3 minutes for it to work or show any preview images/icons. I just get the multi-coloured spinning circle. There is no disruption with any of the applications I am running or my internet access, just to the navigation through my files in my finder window. My Software and security updates are up to date and I hadn't recently downloaded any software. I did have to manually disconnect an external hard-drive last night as it wouldn't let me eject it through my finder window, stating the 'volume was in use.'

Intel Mac :: Mac Extremely Slow And With Spinning Bal?

May 31, 2012

Yesterday morning during working on the mac, the system started to become extremely slow till the point that even the mouse didn't respond any longer and I only got the spinning ball showing. No webpages opened up any longer and closing the program I was working in (Sibelius 7), took a very long time.

I did a system clean with Onyx (for Lion), did a virus and trojan check and followed the advice on the Viruses page in this forum on checking the firewall. It wx  After that everything seemed to be OK and the system was fast again. Now after about 1 hour working, again it styartys to show the same symtoms, getting slower and having the spinning ball showing up more ad more.

MacBook Pro :: Running Extremely Slowly And Fan Continuously Running Loudly?

Jun 4, 2014

My Macbook Pro (from mid-2010) has recently started running EXTREMELY slowly, and the fan continuously runs loudly. From other posts, I have checked my activity monitor to see if any process is taking up a lot of the CPU % and have found that nothing seems high, except the kernel_task which, from what I understand, is supposed to be high. I have also attempted to reset the SMC which didn't fix the problem either. I have taken my computer to the genius bar 3 times now, and they keep telling me nothing is wrong (because it works perfectly there), but when I get it home the fan comes back on, and everything runs slowly.

Intel Mac :: Time Machine Backups Taking Extremely Long Time Running Lion 10.7.4

Jul 2, 2012

I have an iMac running the latest version of Lion (10.7.4) and which I have upgraded to a one terabyte hard drive and full memory capability. I back up to a My Book 2 terabyte external hard drive using Time Machine. My iMac is often very sticky, though I've done most of the diagnostics I know of and preferences etc. are seemingly all OK and fcuk -fs gives a positive result! The Mac is often hard to wake from sleep and in particular seems to spend a lot of time backing up very-very slowly, with the result that it frustratingly seems to be backing up most of the time with the consequent effects on using other programs. Also the whole thing seems to grind to a halt after a hard days work with quite a few applications open. I'm wondering what can be causing this and what I can do to overcome this very frustrating and debilitating problem?

Intel Mac :: Computer Is Running Very Slow?

Apr 2, 2012

My computer is running very slow.  Beach ball all the time. I have about 35mb hard drive free space and 4 MB RAM.  I monitor with Activity Monitor.  Everytime I open a program, like Safari, Adobe, Activity Monitor shows they use up to 99% CPU.  It goes downafter a little while to a small perecntage, until I try to do something with them.  Then many times, it will jump back up to high %CPU and give me the beachball and run very slow.  This is a new thing.  Does anyone know what may be the problem with my computer?

Intel Mac :: 2008 Running Very Slow?

May 23, 2012

My 2008 iMac started running very slowly yesterday, taking ages to start up and showing the spinning wheel on the desktop for ages making it impossible to do anything. It particularly doesn't like running iTunes or Spotify and got worse when I plugged my iPod in. Another thing I can think of is I downloaded an album from iTunes yesterday and this seemed to coincide with it having a breakdown. Chrome is also running slow and I get frequent unresponsive script messages.

I'm running OS X 10.5.8 and have upgraded to iTunes 10.6.1. I recently installed the Flashback removal software.

Intel Mac :: Its Running Super Slow

Jun 16, 2012

Got a 21.5 inch iMac desktop summer of 2010. I think it is the base model. All other info I can't get to on "about my mac" because my Mac is running like frozen molasses.

Anyway, last few days I thought the internet/Safari was running kind of slow. Pages would load, I'd get stuff done, but I just thought it was being glitchy. Then last night, my Mac would all out freeze. Rebooting took at least 5 minutes, and it doesn't matter what I try to use (chrome, firefox, safari), pages just won't load at all or freeze if I am able to make it to Google/Facebook/etc. Now the computer just sits at the blue screen part of the startup, and I had to just finally hard shutdown since I am not getting anywhere to even run a virus scan.

Intel Mac :: Running Very Slow And Sometimes Won't Start

Jul 1, 2012

I have an iMac intel from 2009.. the computer is used only for simple internet exploring, word documents, emails... etc. The hard drive has 140GB of free space, and I have erased the free disk space with 1 pass.The computer runs SO slow to the point where it's almost unusable. To me, it feels like a memory issue, even though the programs that are used require very minimal memory... I tried ejecting the RAM stick blowing on it and popping it back in, but no luck...  It has 1GB of ram total.

OS X :: Extremely Slow Start Up

Mar 21, 2009

my Mac's start up is fine, until I get the the window with the bar that says "OS X starting up". This is the *really* slow bit. I am grateful for the fact that my old Power Mac is yet still faster at starting than my PC, but it is a whole lot slower than it should be. When I say "should be", all the Macs at school, or at the apple shop barely show the start up bar window. Ok, granted that they are a great deal newer and faster, but after a clean install of OS X on my machine, that bar was there for a maximum of 5 seconds. Now it usually takes 20-30 seconds.

Right, on to the things I have already tried:
* Cleaning out login items
* Turning off auto login
* Checking all my fonts
* Disabling the unused fonts
* Cleaning cache files and restarting twice
* Unplugging all of my hardware, bar the monitor

Even after trying everything on this list, plus a few hundred restarts, it is still booting up slowly. Does anybody have anymore ideas? Also, if somebody could please let me know where the log for system start up is stored, I will look through it and post it. Also, I should note that I am running OS X 10.4.11 'Tiger'.

Applications :: PS CS5 Extremely Slow On OS X?

Jul 9, 2010

I don't really know what is wrong, it's a fresh installation and it's just extremely laggy, liquify is slow as heck, drawing and doing anything is just choppy or buggy. Heck, my MB is more than decent for PS, so I don't know what is going on!

CS4 ran fine with no lag, and CS3 on my old p4 with 512mb ram runs smooth as silk with no lag, even when I use liquify, and even then it's only allowed to use 170mb of it.

I know this is a well known problem and I am not the only one, but I just wanted to know what exactly is the problem if anybody has managed to fix it, and a lot of the menu's and window structures are a bit off/messed up as well, it seems to me that a lot of unneeded yet subtle changes were made, and it's annoying as well.

My imac - Running - 10.5.8 Processor - 2.5 GHz Intel core duo 2 Memory - 1 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM I run logic studio on it in my studio. For a good few months its been always having the ''system overload'' message come up on logic so ive been using my laptop instead but i really need to use my imac now as ive just finished builing my studio. About a month ago the memory on the Mac HD was completly full except 1GB. Ive been through deleting almost everything! and trasffering it all onto my new 3TB external HD. Yet still the memory on the Mac HD is still used mostly up;Capacity - 237.57 GB Avaliable -  24.86 GB Used - 207.71 GB My questions are, how do i free up more space? I can't seem to find much saved on my computer anymore only my itunes music which is no more than 10GB. Surley Logic Pro and a few other programs dont take up loads of space.My other question is how can i speed up my computer? so it doesnt come up with the ''system overload'' messages?
