May 17, 2012Suddenly Mac mini won't "see" external drives, neither Firewire nor USB. Possible related to OS software update to 10.6.8? Worked fine under 10.6.4.

Mac Mini :: Bus Powered External Drives On Mac Mini?
Mar 16, 2009As I am looking around at all the usb 2.5" drives I have laying around, I was wondering if there is a limit to the number of bus powered drives that the Mac Mini could run at one time.
I have never run more than one self powered drive on a computer before - so I was wondering if there was a limit that the Firewire/USB bus power can support.
Ideally I would love to be able to run one bus powered firewire 800 drive, and three usb bus powered drives - I'm just not sure if that is possible or advisable...
OS X :: How Can I Share External Drives From Mac Mini With Windows?
Aug 4, 2009I am trying to use Mac Mini as my home server (as well as media server).I tried to share the folder and all, but I cannot see the external drives that are attached to Mac Mini.
If I remote in as Admin, I can see the main HDD, but nothing else. As Guest, I don't see anything.From Windows PCs, Mac Mini doesn't even appear on the network list.

May 31, 2010I just got a mac mini and was wondering if it's possible to just take the hard drive out of my macbook and install it in the mac mini and then boot up. Will it work? Or do I have to set it all up again? The reason I want to do this is because the mac mini has a 320 GB HD and my macbook 500GB, so I want the bigger drive in the mac mini. But, I don't have a "transitional" hard drive to throw everything onto before I wipe the macbook hard drive and install it in the mac mini.

Mac Mini :: 2006 Getting Hot And Fan Is Being Louder Suddenly?
Jun 10, 2012I have late 2006 mini baught in march 2007. Seems getting a little hot. Fan is a little louder all of a sudden. Or maybe I'm imagining it. But does feel a little hot. Maybe I need to move it from under my monitor stand so it can breathe but it has been there since 2007 without any problems. It is core duo not 2 duo. 2gb of ram I added at the store when I got it. They installed it. Anyhow I installed temperature monitor widget and it says "CPU A Temperature Diod 62 degrees celsius" and "CPU A Heat Sink 53 degrees celsius". Also I installed "fan control 1.2" as written on another even though for macbook pro works on mini well. But it says left fan 3850 rpm and right fan -1 rpm. Is that because mac mini has only 1 fan. Anyhow is 60 degrees about normal?? Or even idle (or even just replying here and only 1 tab open) 50 - 60 is too much??

May 23, 2012My MacMini suddenly started freezing up EVERY TIME I tried to use the number keypad. I figured it must be the keyboard so bought a new one. Aug 23, 2007I have an external hard drive, it's formatted in NTFS, sort of like a 'bridge' between my Macbook and my Windows machine. I was able to write to the NTFS drive from my Mac using MacFUSE and NTFS-3G. A few days ago, the hard drive showed up as 'read-only', and is still that way now. I've tried repairing disk permissions, reinstalling the NTFS applications, nothing seems to change the write permissions back.

Jul 17, 2008I have a new-ish Mac Mini and a MacBook Pro. I've been slowly migrating my Pro files to the Mini for some flexibility/stability. I've had the LaCie HD hooked up to the Pro FOR EVER. It's only ever been on a Mac--never a PC.
The LaCie seems to be fine.
However, on the Mini, it's suddenly mounting (both partitions--don't ask, I made them long ago and can't recall why) with a little lock at the bottom left of the icon. When I Get Info and look at permissions I have to unlock it and all/any users listed are noted with "Custom" preferences.
I can't R/W--I get "The folder "Stuff" could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access privileges.

Sep 9, 2014I am using an Intenso 2,5" MemoryStation as an external hard drive. I have a few folders with pictures on it and my TimeMachine. When I plug it in it would usually show up on my desktop and start backing up my hard disk automatically. Something has now changed.
My dad gave my Macbook a new hard disk with more storage. When he put it in, he first safety copied all my stuff onto a separate external hard drive - ie. not my own. My Macbook is working perfectly and looks and acts exactly like before. But when I plug in my external hard drive, it now doesn't show up, neither on my desktop nor in disk utility. I can see that the external hard drive is responding as a light switches on and off when I plug it in and out; I don't think it is broken as I have taken very good care of it.
I'm worried that I have formatted my external hard drive so that it will only respond to a (now old) backup of my Macbook, which I can't access from my new hard disk.
I do also have the external hard drive that my dad originally used to backup all my stuff - with the older backup. Is there a way I can have my external hard drive read the new external hard drive (with the old backup of my Macbook)?

Apr 15, 2012My old Mini is in the next room to the wireless DSL modem. It gets one to three max bars, usually two, and it's just through one interior wall. I don't want to spend a bunch of money, I just want to get a little better reception in the next room. I have seen USB wifi antennas advertised. Would that do anything for me? My iBook G4 in the same spot gets full reception no problem.

Oct 11, 2007Although they work fine on other computers, my external hard drive and USB key won't show up on my macbook. I know it gives power to them since my external lights up when it's plugged in, and I see that they're connected in the System Profiler, but they don't appear on the desktop. Also, my ipod shows up in iTunes, but the computer always says it's corrupted, although it works fine. I thought that was an iPod/iTunes thing but since finding out about my hard drives.

MacBook :: TV As External Display Suddenly Displaying Only Thousands Of Colors?
Oct 26, 2010It's been a while since I've hooked up my MacBook (late 2008 aluminium) to my TV (Samsung LE40M87BD), to use the latter as an external display for watching a film. Tonight I did it once again, and to my dismay the TV was displaying only thousands of colors. Maybe even only 256, I don't know. It's not a changed setting in my TV, as I've looked through its menu and couldn't find any option that would force it to display the millions it's certainly capable of.
After seeing this weird issue, I opened System Preferences. I looked in the Displays preference pane, but since some years Apple allows no manual control over the color depth anymore. So no luck there. I tried restarting, but that changed nothing. It outputs a correct 1080p 50Hz (PAL) signal, but the colors are just all wrong.
How can it be that my MacBook always used to perfectly display millions of colors on my TV, but now suddenly doesn't? I'm using Apple's own Mini Display Port to DVI adapter, and then a DVI to HDMI cable, which always worked problem free. So it's not the cables, I think. It has to be something in the hardware or software. I'm hoping it's software, otherwise it will be a more serious problem. I haven't tried BootCamp yet, but will do so tonight, just to see if Vista will output millions of colors.
OS X V10.7 Lion :: External Monitor Suddenly Stopped Working At 2440x1440
Apr 23, 2012I have a 27" iMac and I'm using Samsung SyncMaster SA850 as a second monitor (connected via a display Port cable with a mini Display Port adapter). Everything worked fine until yesterday - the Samsung screen turned black and now it only works with max resolution 1280 x 1024 (native is 2440x1440). I think I upgraded Lion 10.7.2 to 10.7.3 (I don't remember for sure though). When I connect the monitor to an iMac with 10.7.2 everything works fine. And another iMac with 10.7.3 has the same problem as me.

I tried them on my macbook and it found them right away.

Aug 24, 2010I have a few external drives for my Macbook Pro. One of the drives is an Iomega MaxMini with USB ports on the back to add drives.
My question is; when I hook up the drives to my laptop I get about 4 drive icons on the desktop for each of the partitions, and when I need to remove them I have to eject them or move them to the trash icon.
Is there a way I can put the drives in a folder of some kind that I can just eject and make the desktop look less cluttered?

USB hubs /can/ be really cheap (given patience, they could probably be acquired for $3 per 7-port hub) If you go to conventions and stuff like that, they literally give away flash drives with the company's info on them. not the largest around, but I've seen 512MB (maybe larger now? that was several years ago) to get 343 ports, you would need 57 hubs ($171) 343 free 512MB flash drives cardboard box 18x18x18" (if each hub is 7x2x1", then 57 would take up 7x19x6") This would be big, but not ungodly so. This would give us 171.5 GB. (343 GB if each drive is 1GB) I'm not sure of the power requirements of these drives - might have to get hubs with own power supplies. anyways - is this possible? would it work how I think? USB 2.0 offers faster data transfer than SSD, but I don't know the speeds of flash drives.

Feb 2, 2009I currently have a 2TB WD mirror edition that is setup in RAID 1 so it will mirror all my data. Now I also have a bunch of other drives laying around which I also feel the need to back up and currently I am doing this by doing a whole bunch of dragging and dropping and copying and pasting etc etc etc and this is making me very tired. I know that a setup is possible in disk utility but I am not at all sure about how to configure it so I wont lose any of my data.

OS X :: Way To Combine Internal And External Drives
Feb 19, 2009I'm currently using the 2TB drive as my time machine backup and the other drives for mostly media files (lots of movies, tv shows, etc.). What I would like to do is combine the non-backup drives to show up as a single drive in leopard. Is this possible? RAID 0 is out of the question since they're different sizes. Is there a way in Disk Utility to do this?
