Mac Mini :: Cursor Disappears From One Monitor To The Other
Mar 14, 2012
brand new Mini 2011 with i5 chip.
I have an Apple Cinema HD 23" ( HDMI port) and a 19" off brand (Thunderbolt port) hooked up to the Mini. It is most noticable using Photoshop but happens using other software or just using Safari.
Moving cursor from one monitor to another it will disappear. does not happen all the time. clicking on desktop will make it come back. very inconsistant. I have applied all system and firmware updates. any solutions or are we still waiting for Apple to fix this.
Info:
Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.7.3), i5 chip with 8GB ram

Here's a weird problem I just got on a new (refurb) MBP.
Sometimes (not always) when I comeback to my MacBook after it's gone to screensaver then display sleep (though not full system sleep) the cursor is invisible upon wake.
I know the cursor is still there, but it just can't be seen on screen. If I go down to one of my hot corners, the associated action still happens (in my case sleep the display / activate screensaver -how ironic ), and if I roll over the dock I can bring it up and magnify the icons as I roll over them.... all with no visible cursor whatsoever.
In fact, I only get a cursor once I click on an app and either launch it or bring it up from being minimized / hidden.
This has never happened on any machine I've had before, but by all indications it's a software problem, nothing to do with the hardware.
It's a new 15" MBP 2.2 Ghz, 4GB Ram running Leopard 10.5.2 with all updates (even the recent keyboard update).
A search on this brought up someone else on another board with the same problem, but then the issue got clouded with discussion of dual-monitors or external displays (neither of which I use).
I'm going to go fix permissions right now, but I was hoping somebody here could ID this and help me figure it out.

Anyone come across this? I 've been having it a lot recently on my imac, not my pbook though, and I can't seem to find how to fix it... very strange behaviour, as soon as you start writing the cursor vanishes...make for some very hard writing I tell you...
Well, that's ms, they might even have it as an option somewhere that I cannot find...

I have noticed another weird MBP 2010 bug. I have the 15" i5. The cursor disappears for a few minutes sometimes. I haven't noticed what card is on and I've been doing just random stuff. I mouse around and click around and after a few minutes it comes back. The keyboard responds normally. Everything else is normal. The cursor just completely takes a vacation for a few minutes. The really weird thing is, is I've seen this several times in Windows XP SP3 in BootCamp as well! Maybe it's the crap NVIDIA driver.

i have a 13 inch macbook pro running 10.6. Every so often (a few times a day) my mouse cursor will disappear off my screen. It still works because things are hilighted on the screen and I can still click things when i move the trackpad around with my finger, there is just no pointer on the screen. This only started happening this week and I have had this computer for about 7 months.

I have a Macbook Pro, the cursor is going out and turning into a weird flashing slashed/dotted black line on my screen everytime I connect my Macbook to my TV with the mini display port adapter connected to a VGA cable. I use it to watch movies on my TV through my mac. I haven't had any problems at all with it, I was actually watching something today before it stopped working.
I've already made sure cables are plugged in properly, and displays are mirrored. The cursor is usable-- it can still click on things...I just can't see it.

For the last two weeks, when using Safari, the top bar which shows the word Safari, File etc (can't remember what it is called) disappears unless I move my cursor up to it. I have checked Safari preferences and System preferences and can't figure out how to stop it from disappearing. I suspect it is a check box.
I have tried to check the "view" option to hide/show and neither solves the problem.

I have a Macbook Pro, running Snow Leopard and from time to time my mousecursor just disappears. It's not while I'm typing but when i just hover over the screen. This happens especially when using iPhoto and Safara but also with some other applications. The cursor usually appears again when I move it over the dock and back into the application but it's kind of annoying.

This morning my wireless mouse needed battery replacement. After that, the cursor disappears as I move it away from the dock area. If I move over buttons and am lucky, the proper action will take place but I cannot see the cursor. Sort of like playing Battleship game. Blindly move the mouse and hope I hit something. Although this is new this morning, I've had the same problem in the past but it went away. It seems worse or much more annoying this morning. My wired mouse displays the same problem. I had to borrow my wife's laptop to send this problem. The only program open is Safari.

I have bought 2 new 27" iMacs running Mavericks. I've got two problems. When opening, changing and saving JPGs in Photoshop Elements 6, the thumbnail disappears and only a generic JPG icon shows. This happens randomly. I read that PSE6 is OK on Mavericks. I don't see the problem with GIMP or Lightzone, but I would like to be able to use PSE. Second, my mouse cursor randomly disappears from the screen from time to time.

I've recently purchased a 0.5m thunderbolt cable to connect my Macbook pro to my 27" iMac. All is fine until I exit Target Display Mode (apple F2). At that point the cursor disappears. Very annoyingly, I can just about trace it's whereabouts via the various cues on web browser windows, and through trial and error navigate to the apple menu and restart, whereupon it's all back to normal. How I can prevent it from happening?

Very suddenly my dock has disappeared, (and occasionally reappears), and is now completely non-useable. Why..?
I have created other accounts on my computer previously and the dock on those is fine...I have looked in Activity monitor and it flashes on and then disappears in there. I tried using terminal to 'killall Dock', but this did nothing...Am using Leopard on Alu iMac.
Any ideas what's going on?

While I'm moving my cursor (seemingly on the desktop or some software) it will occasionally jump to one of the corners of my monitor. Otherwise it seemingly is unaffected. I just have to drag it back.
I'm guessing it's something in my preferences but I don't know what.

I have a fresh install of Windows XP, service pack 2 on a boot camp partition on my macbook (13" first gen aluminum case) and a Apple LED Cinema Display attached to the mini display port.
I can't seem to make the Cinema Display the primary display (the "Use this device as the primary monitor" checkbox is always greyed out in the Display Property Settings tab). I also can't shut the macbook lid and continue to use it closed (with kb, mouse and monitor attached) like I would when booting OSX.
Is there some other way to make the Cinema Display the primary monitor, so I can leave the macbook closed when booting into Windows?

My mouse cursor is stuck on a spot on my screen. When I move it the pointer springs back to where it was stuck in a second. Can't do anything. Shut the Mini and restarted but still same problem. Cannot get to sys pref to check anything. Running the latest Lion build. Trackpad and wireless keyboard. Also tried with USB mouse with same result.

I am having problems with my cursor on my macbook. Since a recent software update I've not been able to move the cursor in any app. The only way it moves is when I type. I use the arrow-keys to quickly move around menus but that is impossible. I have looked at all the settings I can think of looking at, but nothing makes any difference. Helen BTW the OS is 10.6.8

The old Mini worked fine with my Westinghouse 24" LCD monitor (HDMI input -connected to Mini via DVI->HDMI cable). The new Mini Server 2010 has HDMI out, so I used a straight-through HDMI cable. The display looks terrible! All of the fonts appear to have a 'shadow' next to them - almost like an old analog VGA with 'interference'.Thinking it could be the cable, I went back to my old Mini's DVI->HDMI cable (and used the new Mini's HDMI->DVI adapter to connect to it). Same results. The Westinghouse monitor's native resolution is 1920x1200. The Mac says that it's configured for 1920x1200.

I just bought a new Mac Mini and instead of the arrow cursor showing up, that annoying rainbow ball thing is there to take its place .I am becoming so annoyed. My old Mac (which was an OS X) did the same thing, but after leaving it alone the rainbow beachball went away.
The only thing that I just recently downloaded was adobe flash player! The rainbow ball only comes up when I've spent a good half hour on the computer. But after it shows up, it never goes away. And since I just bought the Mac mini I dont know how to shut it down properly, so I just press the power button that is located on the back of the Mini, after I do that the little light in the front fades and comes back again and then fades. Is shuting the Mini down like that making the little rainbow ball appear? And just yesterday my friend (Who is not good with computers) Did something that made the window that I was on big. The window covered the whole screen and just froze there. So I just pressed the ESC button and everything went back to normal. Then after that the rainbow ball showed up.

Just bought a Samsung 2333SW Monitor and plugged it into my Mac Mini. The screen looks like the monitor was dropped (psychedelic) when the desktop is displayed. It worked fine on my 17" Samsung monitor, but not the 23".
I exchanged the monitor, and its not the monitor. I was told its the driver on the Mac. I cannot find any driver online for my Mini through Apple, or even at the Samsung sites.

I did some reading online, and know that the flashing question mark basically means that there's either a problem with the OS installation or the hard drive itself. I borrowed a friend's Snow Leopard installation CD (mine didn't come with the CD) to try to boot from it, but it refuses to boot from the CD.
The only keyboard bootup control that does anything so far as I can tell is the alt key (using a windows keyboard), which results a long delay while booting, followed by a blank screen with a mouse cursor. Everything else just ends up with the flashing question mark. If I try to hold C to boot from the CD, it sits there for 3-4 minutes with the occassional CD whirring sound, then ejects the CD and goes to the flashing question mark.

I have always wanted a mac and for the most part it has been money in past years that have kept me away. Aside from apple.com tutorials and playing around a few times at my local BestBuy I know very little about using them (or any computer for that matter). Between this forum, available books, and ease of use I figure it'll all work out. I do have a couple of specific questions and would greatly appreciate some advice. For me I have to go mini because I have an eye disease, and some other eye related issues that make me extremely sensitive to the LED backlit glossy displays that the imac and macbooks use. Even when dimmed. So I have no choice if I am to own a mac now, it's mac mini or nothing.

With the announcement of the new Mini's, I'm considering selling my MBP and ATV and replacing them with a new Mini and iPad.
My wife already has an iPad so it would be great to solely control the Mini with our iPads but do you new a keyboard and mouse for initial installation or at any point after? It really would be a waste of money to have to buy them just to get the thing running.
Is there an app out there that can act a full BT keyboard if need be? Rowmote looks pretty sweet for day-to-day use.
That said, I don't think the Mini would get much use, the iPads would be our main net/mail/cal/etc companions, the Mini would simply be the mothership, holding all our music, videos, etc. I still need a full computer for all my photo and home movie editing, otherwise I'd consider a beaten up old powerbook or iBook.
Also, what would be the advantage of getting OSX Server? If it helps, we have no other computers in the house, only 2 iPhones and 2 iPads (potentially).
