When I check for software updates only itunes and random other updates show up but not security updates or safari update. When i check installed updates I realized my last security update was 2011-004 and I still have safari 5.0.6.

Does anyone think Apple will release updated notebooks any time in the near future? I know anything we come up with will purely be speculation, but sometimes Apple tends to follow trends. My 17" i5 MBP was just replaced with a gift card, and I'm wondering if I should wait for a bit (Apple had a Mac event in October to announce the unibody) or go ahead and get what I want now. I suppose I can always sell it later if something THAT much better is released.

What do you expect of the next generation of MBP's?I think no optical drive is a given, at least for the sub 17" models. I'm more curious if they will ditch the drive bay like they did with the MBA's. I think the next generation of MBPs will have IPS displays with black frames, built-in SSD, very long battery life and strong specs. Imagine a 13" MBP without a drive bay and optical drive could have room for more battery and discrete graphics card, and probably even be thinner than the current crop.

Apple has touched on a few different outer materials for their Macbook Pros, Macbooks, Macbook Airs, etc over the years. We've had glossy white polycarbonate, matte black plastic, the current aluminum, etc. None of these materials have been without fault - cracking and discoloring polycarbonate, scratching and denting aluminum, etc. So, what is next for the various Macbook lines - specifically the Macbook Pro? What will lead to further durability and a more beautiful machine?
I was expecting Apple to extend the glossy coating on it's 5th Generation iPod nanos to the Macbook Pros during the last refresh- but that was obviously not the case. My opinion is to somehow strengthen the aluminum- perhaps through an alloy - and apply a gloss scratch resistant coating?

What do you think is the most probable future BTO graphics option (eg. for the Nehalem generation) Mac Pro?
I would like to add one of the two new ATI cards (HD 4850 or 4870) in my mac pro to use in Windows.
I would like to replace the 2600XT completely and flash the new card for mac once there will be a version with an EFI-ROM (which probably will happen sooner or later, like the 3870 now) and therefore I want to get the card which is more likely to appear as mac version in about a year.

So a while back I had final cut pro installed, and eventually deleted cause I no longer needed it. I used AppCleaner when removing to try and make sure I got it all.
Well every time I do a software update it wants to install "Pro Applications Update" and "Prokit Updates" Which are updates for final cut pro and its related apps.
Any idea how I can stop it from wanting me to install these updates for something I no longer have?

Intel seems to be the way to go, and I have no problem with the price (which will likely drop further by the time I purchase it) and the storage (I'll get an external drive). But, my one caution stopping me from wanting to get this is the lack of TRIM or garbage collecting. Does Intel plan to update the firmware for their drives to support either of these?

I did a bunch of research and found a bunch of conflicting information. My question to you all is this:are there any good, portable external hard drives that support both FireWire and USB?I have an iMac and an MB Pro, but a lot of people I know don't; I would like to use the FireWire and still be able to use the hard drive with others' computers who do not.I was looking for something that: did not require an actual electrical plug (wanted the USB/FireWire to be used as the power source)is at least 1TB (would prefer 1.5TB)is (preferably but doesn't have to be) rugged.I plan on doing some traveling and whatnot and just throwing it my bag; I'd probably go a while without having a chance to really maintain it, hence my wanting these things.
The main ones I was looking at are the LaCie MiniRugged, LaCie Rugged, Transcend Storejet 25H2P and 25M2, and the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex.Unfortunately, I've either heard bad reviews or they don't meet all my criteria. The LaCies, for example, were said by some to be outdated, flimsy, etc. (and the mini doesn't have a FireWire port). The Transcends don't do FireWire, nor does the Seagate. In case anyone was wondering, I included the Seagate becaue I have a friend who just got back from a year-long trip bumming around Asia with it and it stood up fine (but, again, no FireWire) I was wondering if anyone could suggest anything.

I am on the verge of buying my first Mac Pro and have a few questions to those with some insight into the software development world before I make my decision on whether to buy a 1cpu or 2cpu MP.I am buying this computer to last me for many years and because of that wondering alittle about the future of software:-)1) Are software developers in general shifting towards making programs that utilize multiple cores? Will games, business software, leasure software etc. slowly start to be made with multiple cores in mind? Or is the trend that multiple core usage is mostly for professional editing?

I am going to buy my very first mac and I've decided it's going to be an imac. I'm completely new to mac and don't know which one of the two 21.5 inches (i3 3.06 or i3 3.2) to buy. Like the title says the main usage is going to be for music production and Logic or logic express is going to be used with lots of midi plug-ins. I'm also going to work with some photo and video (nothing serious yet), some web browsing and mailing (the regular things to do on a pc). And maybe some WoW. No heavy gaming on the mac, I have a nice windows pc for that I have a discount when buying that makes it harder to choose:
21,5" 3,06GHz - 1079$
21,5" 3,2GHz - 1349$
Which imac is for me and which one is most future proof?

I have lots of DV cassettes I want to load and eventually get to DVD.
In iMovie I have taken the first cassette and did my montage the way I want it. Now, I want to export this movie (as a single file if possible) so that when I will have a few of them, I will use iDVD to do DVD menus and add all my movies.

So I currently have a Lacie "Porsche designed" 320GB external hard drive which I use for Time Machine. The major problem is that it is huge and requires an external power source. Also, the rubber bits on the bottom came off because I have had it for a while and so now whenever Time Machine backs up, you can hear the drive on the table.
I have been thinking about getting a portable drive like a WD Passport Essential because it doesn't need a power source. Does anyone have any experience of these drives with Time Machine or any others to recommend?
Also how much will running the drive when my 13" 2.53 MacBook Pro is on battery power affect the battery life? Secondly, if I have a 250GB internal HD, how big an external drive should I be looking at?

I recently bought a Western Digital Elements 640 GB portable hard drive. My brother formatted it on his PC & it "cannot be modified" on my MacBook. However, I used Disk Utility to format it, rendering it modifiable on my MacBook &, according to my boyfriend, who uses a PC, unmodifiable on a PC. Is there any way to format the hard drive such that it can be used on both a Mac and a PC, without having to do backups & reformatting each time I switch between the two?

I'm planning to buy a new external hard disk, probably 1TB, which currently looks as if it's the most competitive and best value size. We don't currently need excessive speed, but our uses may include an "EyeTV Archive" folder (files of non-HD DVB-T recordings). Some external HD I've owned have been rather noisy. Does anyone have recommendations for quiet makes and models that are currently available? Also, I need to consider which ports to go for, having been left with SCSI drives when Apple dropped SCSI ports as standard, and now having Firewire 400 drives that won't connect directly to new Macs. Then there's consideration whether and, if so, how soon manufacturers will move from USB 2.0 to USB 3.0 . . . or will the move be to eSATA, which is already available on some external HDs? So, among those ports available on current external HDs, which do other people think will be most useful in the next several years?

I recently purchased this Portable (iomega) 500GB hard drive. I just realized it only works on my Mac's USB ports, but not with my USB Hub. Does it exceed the power limit of the USB Hub? I don't see how it is possible, because I currently have nothing else plugged into it, and it uses a power adapter.
It worked with my old Hard Drive, which is big and uses a power adapter. Now it doesn't seem to work. Also I tried on just a USB adapter that makes the cable longer, still doesn't work. Only the MBP ports work! However, the hub works for things such as phone charger, and speakers right now.

I just imported some pictures from my portable HDD, but the MBP got frozen in the process so I had to do it again. Now I have all my pictures imported and i'm happy with it. The problem is that every time I open iPhoto, it shows me this window: I tried importing them, but the only thing that appears is a "Recovered photo album" on the left column in the iPhoto, and it's empty. I tried finding the files in order to delete them, but couldn't find them in the directory (/users/id/pictures/iphoto/recovered...). Is this folder invisible? If so, how can I "see" invisible folders?

I have a WD 320gb portable hard drive which has been formatted as Journaled for about 3 months. Just yesterday i decided to format the 320gb hd as FAT32 as i heard that Mac disk utility is able to format this type in excess of the 32gb that windows is able too. This now allowed me to have the HD be read by Mac and windows with ease, or so i thought. So i did that, and copied all my data onto it and ever since it has been a bit patchy.. The drive is recognised instantly by windows computers and functions fine but when plugged into my macbook sometimes it will not display at all, other times it will take a long time to read, and in other cases it will function perfectly. When the drive refuses to be read by mac I checked disk utility and it shows that the HD is definately connected but just wont show up on my desktop.

I've had a LaCie Porsche Design for the last 6 years with no problems but with the upgrade to a MBP I'm looking to get a new portable hard drive (LaCie or another brand). My old LaCie was FW400 so I'd be looking at FW800 now. Which make and model do you use and are you happy with it's performance?
