Hardware :: External HDs - Quiet Drives & Future - Proof Ports?

May 11, 2009

I'm planning to buy a new external hard disk, probably 1TB, which currently looks as if it's the most competitive and best value size. We don't currently need excessive speed, but our uses may include an "EyeTV Archive" folder (files of non-HD DVB-T recordings). Some external HD I've owned have been rather noisy. Does anyone have recommendations for quiet makes and models that are currently available? Also, I need to consider which ports to go for, having been left with SCSI drives when Apple dropped SCSI ports as standard, and now having Firewire 400 drives that won't connect directly to new Macs. Then there's consideration whether and, if so, how soon manufacturers will move from USB 2.0 to USB 3.0 . . . or will the move be to eSATA, which is already available on some external HDs? So, among those ports available on current external HDs, which do other people think will be most useful in the next several years?

IMac :: 21.5inch For Music Production - Future Proof?

Nov 28, 2010

I am going to buy my very first mac and I've decided it's going to be an imac. I'm completely new to mac and don't know which one of the two 21.5 inches (i3 3.06 or i3 3.2) to buy. Like the title says the main usage is going to be for music production and Logic or logic express is going to be used with lots of midi plug-ins. I'm also going to work with some photo and video (nothing serious yet), some web browsing and mailing (the regular things to do on a pc). And maybe some WoW. No heavy gaming on the mac, I have a nice windows pc for that I have a discount when buying that makes it harder to choose:

21,5" 3,06GHz - 1079$
21,5" 3,2GHz - 1349$

Which imac is for me and which one is most future proof?

Mac Pro :: 30" - Internal HD Records - Need Quiet Drives

Aug 10, 2009

I'm still surprised that she's okay having this giant mac pro and 30" screen in our tiny living room, but it certainly does help that they're so pretty. I looked through this thread discussing the WD Black drives...it's a few months old, would people still recommend those? While they can definitely be had through newegg for pennies, I don't mind spending a little more if it will get a quieter/more reliable drive.

These will be used to do autocad & photoshop (oh, and, of course one of them will be a bootcamp drive, since autocad unfortunately isn't a native mac app), primarily, so speed is somewhat of an issue, but it's not like I'm doing gigantic 3D renders. One drive will be a scratch disk for PS, one drive a time machine backup, and one a data drive...at least, that's what I've considered at this point...still trying to figure out how I want to do my total household network backup...currently, external drives are connected to my home theater-powering mac mini, and our laptops time machine into that, using 'home and away' (awesome app, by the way). I'd like to keep that system as is, and maybe just have the mac pro as a completely separate system (my 'work' system), and have its time machine backups self-contained, and probably backed up offsite somehow.

IMac :: New 500GB Drives Noisy Or Quiet?

Jan 8, 2010

It's been well documented in these forums that the 1TB drives make a lot of noise in the new iMacs. Can people with the 500GB drives let us know if they are silent like the old iMacs were? I need a silent iMac and are ready to buy IF the drives are quiet.

MacBook Pro :: Momentous XT Noise & Quiet Hard Drives

Dec 7, 2010

I just upgraded my 13" Macbook Pro 2.53GHz Mid 2009 to the Momentus XT 500Gb and its pretty quiet, but not practically silent like the original Hitachi 250Gb drive. It sounds like a little fan is going pretty much all the time. I also tried the Western Digital Scorpio Black and it wasn't much quieter. Are there any almost silent (fast would be nice) drives other with 320Gb+ other than SSD? Might there be a hard drive controller or something Apple loads onto their factory drives that makes them quieter?

[URL]. Proof-of-concept exploit code has been posted online for six kernel vulnerabilities, five of which affect Mac OS X 10.5.6, the most current version of Apple's operating system software. The vulnerabilities are proofs of concept that demonstrate the code can take control of a machine, either via creating a privilege escalation modifying the users or launching DoS local attacks against the PC," he said in an e-mail. "The proof of concept code has the ability to create a new system volume, call to some OS functions, change the user ID, and so on, without administrative privileges.

MacBook Pro :: Registering MBP Without Proof Of Purchase And Applecare?

Nov 16, 2009

If one buys a brand new sealed macbook pro from a private seller off craigslist/ebay/kijiji without a receipt can they register it with Apple? I know if one checks the serial number it will tell if there is warranty on the machine and an estimated purchase date. However, I was told by Apple that I would not be able to purchase and attach applecare to the machine because there was no prooof that the machine was infact purchased by someone - but that the machine does have one year warranty from the estimated purchase date.

Wondering if anyone has encountered such a situation where they bought a machine privately and then wanted to add applecare to it within the standard one year warranty period and was denied by Apple because there was no proof of purchase for the hardware. Or was the Apple rep just misinformed - if a machine is under one year warranty then one can purchase and apply applecare anytime within the one year.

Wondering if buy a machine and then 3 months down the road decide to buy applecare, has anybody been denied adding that applecare even though the machine is covered under the one year warranty. Also has anyone resistered hardware in their name without proof of purchase other than an ebay/craigslist printout?

OS X :: Snow Leopard - Massive Anti-climax And Proof Apple Are Faultering?

Aug 30, 2009

I'm not writing this to simply stir-up the fan boys, I'm saying it because SL is the final straw for me - I've had enough!I did a clean erase and install of Leopard, took some notes then installed SL. my boot time went UP from 25.5 secs to 34 secs and im not sure that I gained any disk space (I know it's now calculating it differently).

As a casual user I can't see any improvements in speed or useability, Mail still takes ages to shut down and iphoto has already crashed twice. Add this to the fact that this year I've also bought a MBP with a glossy screen that I didn't want (but had no choice) and after not upgrading to the iPhone 3G so I could wait for the 'next big thing' they bring out the 3GS (yawn) meaning I'll have essentially the same phone for at least 4 yrs. And the iPods due out - what's their big new feature? A camera. Wow. Where is Apple's innovative flair? I'm so, so disappointed in everything Apple over the last year - I don't hold much hope for the tablet.

Mac Pro :: 2009 Mac Pro Noise - How To Quiet

Aug 26, 2009

I just got a 2.66 Quad-core Mac Pro. I've read a lot of comments about how quiet they are, things like "silent", "can't tell that it's running", etc. Mine is certainly quieter than my G5, but it is far from silent. I hear the typical high-pitched whine that I expect from computers, not loud, but there. But the sound that's starting to bug me is a low-frequency sound, almost like motor. It oscillates in volume from. It's not loud, but it has an irritating quality. I can't tell where it emanates from almost silent to too loud. It's not the graphics card or the disk drive, and all the fans are running under 1000 rpm. I'm guessing this isn't normal, but does anyone have an idea of where the sound is coming from?

MacBook Pro :: Extremely Quiet Clicking Noise

Aug 18, 2010

So this is a new MBP(returned it 2 times till i got the right one). So I have a very quiet bedroom, and when I have noticed that the macbook pro 13inch current model makes a click from time to time, it's like once or twice every hour. I was wondering if this is anything I should worry about? Getting another exchange is not an option, I mean I could but I rather not, cause the Apple store folks seem to be getting kind of tired of seeing me. For the Curious:

1st return - Sudden freezes that happened on the second day of purchase!
2nd return - The hinge stuck out on the left side.
Current MBP - I am starting to notice the quiet clicks, not sure if I should worry about it.

MacBook Pro :: Loud Click - No Fan Reading And Quiet Clicking

Dec 7, 2009

I turned on my uMBP today and took it over to my bed, and when I set it on my lap, there was a loud click noise (louder than the normal motion sensor click) and then a quiet clicking noise started up in the left corner. I took a look at the iStat reading and it said 0 rpm for the fan. I'm assuming that the fan just gave out. I took it in to an authorized service provider and he said that he is "concerned that it could be the hard drive." Does that makes sense to anyone? Regardless, it's well under warranty. But now I'm stuck using a crappy PC until I get it back and i'm already in withdrawal!

Hardware :: USB Flash Drives As External SSD?

Sep 11, 2010

[URL] Though I've never done it myself, I've gleaned that it's possible to partition/raid multiple HDs together to act as 1 HD Might it be possible to do the same to lots of Flash Drives serially linked with USB hubs? 1 USB port -> 1 hub (7 USB ports) -> 7 hubs (49 USB ports) -> 49 hubs (343 USB ports)

USB hubs /can/ be really cheap (given patience, they could probably be acquired for $3 per 7-port hub) If you go to conventions and stuff like that, they literally give away flash drives with the company's info on them. not the largest around, but I've seen 512MB (maybe larger now? that was several years ago) to get 343 ports, you would need 57 hubs ($171) 343 free 512MB flash drives cardboard box 18x18x18" (if each hub is 7x2x1", then 57 would take up 7x19x6") This would be big, but not ungodly so. This would give us 171.5 GB. (343 GB if each drive is 1GB) I'm not sure of the power requirements of these drives - might have to get hubs with own power supplies. anyways - is this possible? would it work how I think? USB 2.0 offers faster data transfer than SSD, but I don't know the speeds of flash drives.
