Laptops :: MacBook Pro Fan Runs High When Asleep?

Oct 25, 2010

MacBook Pro 2.16 Intel Core2Duo with 2 GB 667MHz SDRAM runs very quietly when being used. When left with lid closed overnight but still logged in, each AM the the fan is running loudly at high speed and the case is hot. As soon as I open it and it starts up, the fan quiets down and the case is cool in a few minutes. The temps range (when open and quiet) from 90-125 F for various components and the fan speeds are about 2000 RPM. Why should it run hot when closed and asleep.

Laptops :: MacBook OS 10.6.2 - Fan Runs Almost Continuously

Dec 29, 2009

I have seen this question answered before but can't find it in the archives. Almost immediately after starting to use the laptop the fan starts running and doesn't quit until you put it back to sleep or turn it off. Any ideas on why this is happening and is it harmful to the computer in the long run?

Laptops :: MacBook Runs Hot When Using Windows

Aug 15, 2010

When I made the switch to the Mac world with a MacBook Pro, I needed to replace my old Microsoft Money for simple small business functions. I tried a number of Mac programs, and all were lacking. Fortora came close, but definitely no cigar. So I installed Windows 7 to permit me to run Quicken. Despite all the strong negative reviews, this program works well and is far ahead of all Mac financial software. Since I use Windows only for Quicken and for Audible Site, since iTunes does not play nice with my Sansa Clip.

I didn't want to divide up my 4 MB of RAM using virtualization software. So I use Boot Camp, and this solution works well for me. What was immediately obvious was that my Mac Book runs very hot when using Windows, where I do little more than use Quicken. So hot that I dare not set my machine on my lap. As soon as I reboot to the Mac OS, the machine cools down. My impression, although I have not really tested this, is that the battery also runs down faster on the Windows side.

MacBook Pro :: Fans Start Running At High Speed When Computer Is Asleep?

Laptops :: MacBook Gets Hot And The Fan Runs Full-speed When Idle?

Oct 19, 2008

I have an early 2008 Black MacBook with 4GB of RAM and the stock 160GB hard drive. Sometimes, when I have only Mail and Safari open and am just browsing emails, the fan starts to run full speed, and the internal temperature reaches 180. This often happens when the Mac is actually idle and only displaying the screen saver! The room I'm in is rarely over 75 when this occurs. I don't really have any intensive login services, just a GMail notifier and things like Suitcase and iTunes Manager.

MacBook :: CPU Runs At High Temp - Wants To Reduce The Heat?

Mar 10, 2009

I'm using iStat and it says that my CPU runs at temps around high 70s, low 80 degrees Celsius for about 10-15 minutes at a time (also says the same for Airport card). It usually takes a while for it to cool down. I always place my laptop on flat surfaces. It does this even during light internet surfing minus flash or any other multimedia...now WITH multimedia use, it reaches the 80s no problem and I just quit the process cuz I don't want my laptop to explode one day.

I just wanted to know if this was average and what temps everyone else is usually running at?

I'm afraid that if it runs at these high of temps for a long time each time like that, then it may do some damage somewhere...

Laptops :: Ibook G4 - Fan Runs And Black Screen

Jan 7, 2010

My ibook G4 turned itself off and when I tried to power it up the fan turns vigorously while the screen stays black. Thats it.

Prior to this I was doing some pretty heavy music importing and during that time the fan was going nuts (I then stopped importing)...also while it was charging it the past few nights the light on the connector would go out and it stopped charging while it was still plugged in. This was the first time it happened and it happened 2-3 times.

Like for most people my entire life is on that computer along with a very important document that I need to access ASAP. What could be the issue...not the logic board!

Power Mac G5 :: Fan Runs On High And Won't Wake From Sleep - It Freezes?

Dec 10, 2007

I have a G5 (Power PC, g5, Dual 1.8 GHZ with 1.25 GB SDRAM, and Mac OS X 10.4.10-phew!) and I recently: added more USB ports using a PCI card, and purchased a non-Apple 22" widescreen display.

Prior to adding USB ports, I was using a hub that ran off its own power source, and used a Samsung 19" monitor.

My situation now: everything starts up fine, but ultimately the fan will kick in at SUPER HIGH and won't stop. I can put my Mac to sleep--which stops the fan noise--but then it won't wake up.

I have run the Apple Hardware test and everything checks out OK. I've also reset the SMU according to directions from this forum; AND I've vacuumed out all the dust bunnies.

The fan runs so loud and so high it sounds like it's an airplane that's about to take off.

Short of bringing in my Mac to a technician, can you recommend anything? My Mac has been glitch free up until now.

Power Mac G5 :: Display Shows Gray Screen - Fan Runs High Speed ?

Oct 10, 2007

I purchased my PowerMac G5 in 2003 and no problems till now. My problem is that on startup, the display first shows gray screen with a globe in a white box flashing in the center of the screen. This continues for about 90 seconds --- then the globe in box icon changes to a small file folder icon with alternating face/question mark flashing in the file folder. At about the same time, the fan speeds up dramatically. The fan continues to run at this high speed for about 90 additional seconds, then the fan returns to normal speed, and the startup continues normally to the blue screen. Once startup is complete, computer runs okay. The whole process takes about 4 minutes.

PowerPC :: G4 Ibook Dead - Blank Screen - Fan Runs On High Speed?

Nov 22, 2008

I purchased a used ibook from owc in January and have had it back to them twice for repairs. Lately, it stopped booting up again and they told me to use [URL] to take the mobo out and ship it to Arizona to have the solder refloated. I did and got it back, put it together and it would boot up, only to run for 15 minutes and shut down. Thinking I missed something, I dissasembled it today and reassembled it. Now it turns on with a blank screen, the fan runs on high, and it will go no further. I tried to reset the power manager, reset the p-ram, the hard drive is only a few months old and my brain is getting fried with frustration.

OS X :: MacBook Refuse To Start Up Once Asleep

Jan 18, 2009

Once asleep and enters hibernation, the laptop will not start up. Even after I hit the space bar. The "sleeping light" stops going on and off and just sticks on and the screen stays un-lit. I am then forced to shut it off, so I will hold the power button down until I hear the hard drive shut down and then start it back up.

Then one of two things happen; either it starts up nicely or it starts up and remains with no display and I am forced to hard restart again. I have found that if my external HD is plugged into the USB port upon start up it will get stuck in start up; it will keep starting up the main hard-drive and nothing happens so I have to hard shut off and unplug the external and then start again. I have been trying to keep music going on my machine to avoid hibernation, but night times kinda suck.

MacBook Pro :: OS X (10.6.8) Screen Asleep On Startup

This has been happening increasingly. When I start up my MacBook Pro (running Snow Leopard) the system boots up (chime, etc) and all is well except at the end of the process the screen is black. If I push power button and then "S" (which puts into sleep mode), of course the screen remains black. Then pushing any key will wake the screen and all is as normal.

MacBook Pro :: Resetting The PRAM - Won't Stay Asleep

Nov 2, 2009

I have a February 2008 MBP and am having issues with keeping it asleep. I currently have it set up as a desktop connected to an external monitor, keyboard and Magic Mouse (along with a variety of other peripherals) and I've recently noticed this issue. I'm running 10.6.1, I have tried everything from resetting the PRAM, SMC and repairing disk permissions to even installing a clean copy of Snow Leopard and restoring from Time Machine backup.

For power management, I have it set to never sleep, since I manually set it to sleep and don't want it sleeping on me when in use. I also have Wake on LAN activity disabled. Yet when I set it to sleep, at approximately noon the next day it wakes up by itself. I've even turned off the Magic Mouse to make sure it wasn't being moved by vibration and waking up the Mac. I'm completely stumped!

For troubleshooting purposes, I've installed a clean copy of SL without restoring TM backup to see if it's a program that's causing this issue or if it's a problem with a peripheral. I've yet to check back on it as I'm at work, but I'm hoping it's just software related. I'm at a loss as to what to do.

The battery drained and I did not notice until it was fully drained. I then went to plug it in and turn it back on and it refused to, I then closed the cover and it awoke as if everything was normal. I opened the cover and I saw it exactly as it should but then the screen went black as if it had gone to sleep. i'd rather not have to purchase a new macbook.

MacBook Pro :: Loses Wireless Connection When Asleep

Apr 15, 2012

My 2011 Macbook pro i7 has a chronic problem: as soon as it goes to sleep, the wireless connection is lost, and has to be manually coerced back to the computer by turning the wireless off, waiting several seconds, turning it back on again, and waiting for it to find the router again. It finds the router in a few more seconds, then everything is OK until it goes to sleep again.

A real pain in the butt, and shouldn't be a problem on a supposedly high end computer.

MacBook Air :: Won't Stay Asleep - Black Screen And Freeze

Nov 9, 2010

Been having a few huge issues with my new MBA 13".

#1 - Putting the laptop to sleep. I put the laptop to sleep and put it in the bag and at some point it wakes back up. If I don't remove it during the day by that afternoon/evening when I go to remove it the battery is at 0% and it's fully discharged. One day I took it out a couple hours in and the fan was blowing like mad like it had been running for a while, when I opened the lid I had a black screen and it was frozen. Disabled waked for network access but it was no help.

#2 - When the laptop goes in standby and I open it back up I get a beach ball forever - I've tried to let it go for upwards of 30 minutes and it never unfreezes, but I can move the mouse around. I ended up telling the laptop not to standby when it was plugged in to a power source otherwise I ended up always losing work.

Most times it will wake up when I click the touchpad alot or close and reopen the screen. However, sometimes I will need to restart. I am not sure why it is doing this all the sudden. It is happening more and more often. How can I fix it? The AC Adapter is plugged in, battery work normally and I set the energy saver so that it would not sleep when plugged in.
