MacBook Pro :: Won't Shut Down Completely
Apr 24, 2012
My macbook pro won't shut down completely. It stops at the blue screen-when left to continue shutting down, it drains the battery. I have to power down by holding the power button during this process.

I believe that I shut down my macbook but was mistaken and it did not shut down completely. The next day I opened it up and the screen wouldn't turn on like it usually does after simply being closed without powering down. I wasn't around to use it till a day later, being today, and I thought it was just a low battery problem. Now the battery is fully charged and yet it is still in the same state.
There is one light on but it is not bright like it is when sleep mode is not taking place. Also, it sounds like its running; I can hear the fan running but both the keyboard and screen are refusing to turn on. I've gone on the apple support page and have attempted what they suggest, but it didn't work. I don't use any plug in devices like a mouse, the only things I plug in are the battery charger and my IPod.

So when I charge my macbook pro retina display too a 100% and then when I come back the next day and turn it on the battery has drained by itself by like 7%. Sometimes they are even drastic changes like 15-20%? I have just bought this macbook and is only a week and a half old? What should I do?

When I shut down my iMac, everything seems to shut down ok until it gets to the grey screen and then the wheel just keeps spinning. I have repaired permissions but am at a loss for what else to try.

How do you totally shut off resume? I've tried unchecking the box at logout, and in system preferences, and it just ignores it.

My TC has been working flawlessly for some 2 years now, but last night it was all too much. It is completely shut down, and unplugging the power and reconnecting doesn't make a difference. There is no orange or green light, and no sound from the unit. Luckily enough I purchased it at the same time as I picked up my MacBook Air, to which I did buy the AppleCare package, and my questions are: What can/should I try regrading my TC? Is my TC covered by the AppleCare agreement for my MBA?

So far, this isn't going well for me. I have, at random points, had the screen completely shut off (go black) and no ability to bring it back on. I have also seen heat problems, and I'm really not doing anything except for outlook. Has anyone had the screen fail on them like this? It doesn't happen on the Mac side -- just when running Win7 in bootcamp with the latest drivers. Somewhat frustrating -- it just happened when I tried to open a PNG using windows picture viewer: bam, screen to black. I am guessing graphics driver failure.

Would have checked this myself but I haven't gotten around to installing Boot Camp 3.1 yet.
Anyone with a uMBP try to see if Boot Camp 3.1 allows the keyboard light to completely shut off in Windows 7?
I described it more here.

I am getting a pop up "Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now?".
The one we get, if pressed the power button to switch it off?. The problem is not consistent and mostly I get if left inactive for some time(random). I have run the hardware test(installer DVD and pressing D) without any issue found.

There have been many brief posts mentioning that unlike previous MBAs, the new MBAs do not slow down the CPU when heat goes beyond a certain point. Does this mean there is completely no CPU throttling at all? Or that it still throttles, but at a higher heat level? If there is completely no CPU throttling, then logically it should fall back to another common method of handling overheating which is to automatically turn off the machine (not a very elegant method, but at least it's something). Do the new MBAs do this? If not, how do they handle overheating?

It will turn on and show a blank grey screen and the apple with the rotating circle as if it's loading everything to turn on, but it stays on this page, I left it on for a few hours to see if it would eventually start up but so far... Nothing !!! I do not have my installer disks!

My MBP has been acting strangly for more than two months now. It started with taking a couple minutes to locate the WiFi, then just general slowness, and now is so troublesome that I want to just wipe it completely to factory fresh and try again. I nearly chucked it out a wondow today, the first time a Mac has made me feel like I was using a PC.I originally posted quite awhile ago (url...) although 300+ reads got not a single reply. So I don't know whether I am even posting this in the right area.is this more likely a Lion problem? Or something else? I don't know and am tired of being stressed. Had an important paper to write today and probably should have used my iPhone rather than trying to convince my MBP to work.
I have repaired the permissions, zapped the PRAM, re-installed Lion, re-RE-installed Lion, and tried just living in Safe Boot Mode. I just want my Mac to work, as it always has in the past. So now, let's just start fresh and see what happens. Except guess what? I can't find any specific instructions as to how to even do THAT.So I am begging someone to give me simple instructions to erase my hard drive so I can just start over.

I bought my mac refurbished from apple about a month ago. My mac started freezing up completely. about 6 times a day. There was no damage done by me. No new programs had even been installed. I took it into the apple store and they sent it in to be repaired. I got it back a day ago and the same problem started happening again. Now it wont even boot up without freezing. My question is where do I go from here? do i take it in again? i shouldn't have to wait and keep on sending it out..or should I call apple care and request a new computer?

I was wondering if there is anything else I can do to completely erase everything from my Unibody MacBook Pro? I usually do the 7 pass erase and install everything from factory but is there any other procedure I can follow to make sure my computer would be running at its best? I am not sure if it is me or not but my mac used to be faster when I bought it last year even after reinstalling everything from factory.

With mine, when I drain it completely, it just shuts down, i.e. it doesnt go to sleep mode as there is no pulsating light on the front right corner. Once I start charging, however, and I can again switch it on, it resumes where I left off, so the computer has saved the contents of the memory onto the hard disk. On my SR MBP it was different, it would actually go to sleep mode when the batteries were almost completely drained.

I just got a MacBook last week, and am running 10.9.3. Twice so far, I've been using the computer and the UI ceases to respond: no response to keypresses, no response to the trackpad. The only way out seems to be a hard reset of the computer. This is a brand-spanking new Mac, although I have installed QuickSilver and Firefox. Have there been any issues with freezing on 10.9?

I tried this: Quit out of Messages for MacHit Command+Shift+G to bring up the “Go To Folder” windowEnter ~/Library/Messages/Select all files in the Messages directory and move to trash, files will be named chat.db, chat.db-shm, chat.db-wal, etcEmpty the Trash and relaunch iMessages This didn't work.

How can I completely remove an old non-functional McAfee virus protection app from my MacBook Pro? It seems that a ghost of it still appears at the top of the screen on the upper menu bar. I'm thinking that there may be other (hidden) components that could safely be removed too.
