Intel Mac :: Startup When Hard Drive Is Toast?
Feb 28, 2012
I've got the sick iMac of a friend at home. The hard disk on his intel based iMac (2008) crashed completely. I can start up the computer using my OS install CD (SL), but when I go to Disk Utiliy there's no hard disk there. Only the DVD drive, which does tell me enough. Is there a way I could still start up my friend's iMac from either an external hard disk or my own iMac (2011 OS 10.7.2)?
I suppose I probably need Fireware to install the OS (SL) on an external drive using my friend's iMac. When I follow the instructions on the DVD to partition the external drive (GUID partition) and go back to the installation I keep on getting the message I need to partition. The external drive I've been using is USB connected and I have the feeling that SL doesn't support USB and I need Fireware.
When I try to use my own iMac to install the SL on the external drive I am of course being told I cannot start up from SL because I've got Lion installed. I know I could bypass this problem (holding down a certain key I presume), but do I want to take that risk, since my own computer is working smoothly and I don't want to jeopardize it.
Could I create some sort of network between my iMac and my friend's? The main reason I would like to get the sick iMac to start up is to try to rescue some of the data my friend has on there. He has made a backup of his files when the hard disk started to "act strangely" (about 6 months ago - pity we don't have a "sighing" icon here), but he continued to just force the computer to start up until it gave up on him completely. Now he still has got stuff on there he feels sorry to lose.

I have just installed a new hard drive in my imac intel 20" (2006) and upgraded the memory and now the hard drive does not show up in the 'select destinations' folder of the install program. I can see the hard drive in the disk utilities window however it wont let me do anything. It is a seagate 1TB SATA II drive however it is displaying it as a 7.3 TB.I have tried to erase and partition and get the same error message each time, 'Input/Output error'.
I have tried starting the thing with the install disk which is Mac OS X (Tiger?) which came with the computer

My August 2007 MacBook runs OSX 10.4.10. It has performed flawlessly since my daughter bought it in 2007, and perfectly after I purchased it from her last september. The other night I was surfing the web while flying on a commercial airliner. (GoGoNet or something similar) Performance was kind of slow but I attributed that to the in-air wifi, which I had never used before. Then the browser started to hang with the spinning pinwheel. Option apple escape WOULD NOT force quit safari. After a few shutdowns using only the power button, the mac hung up on startup. I hear the chime, see the apple icon, the gear turns but it never goes past that point. It may be significant that the plane was flying through scary turbulence when my problems began.
When I boot up using the mac install disk 1, I can get it to start cleanly using the C key, the D key and NO keys. But when I run the hardware diagnostic, both short and long test, the mac comes up 100% clean. But i cannot see any test for the hard drive. When I try to run disk utility, the colored pinwheel arrives and it never goes away. When I go down the road of re-installing the system software, I cannot see the target drive.
When I put my ear on the deck, just to the right of the track-pad, I can hear the hard drive quietly spinning away with regular - not random - clicks.
I see that Apple is quietly replacing these hard-drives, but the affected computers seem to have a folder/question mark on the desktop on startup, not the apple/spinning gear.
I really would like to be able to recover my photos and some files if the hard drive is going to be swapped. But I am resigned to the situation that these un-backed-up files will be forever lost.

How do I transfer all data from my old internal hard drive to a new internal hard drive? I have an iMac with a 320gb internal HD that is full and I am replacing it with a 2tb internal drive. I have several external drives; 1 tb, 2tb and 3 tb. The 2 tb is being used for Time Machine. Do I have to buy an enclosure? If so, where would I get an inexpensive one? I also want to partition the new internal drive for Windows, and I'm not sure how much space to use for that. I plan to use Windows to check my work in PowerPoint created on my Mac for clients on PCs.

My internal 1TB hard drive on my iMac is dead and I don't have the money to replace it at the moment. I have everything backed up on an external 1TB drive using Time Machine. As a workaround for the time being,Is there any way I can install the system on the external drive and use that as the boot drive without erasing the Time Machine Backups? It seems to me I would have to have two partitions for the external drive, one for the system, and one for Time Machine. But is there any way to add a partition without erasing the existing one with Time Machine only on it? Â

I have a iMac DV G3/500 (Special Edition) from summer 2000. Anyway, I am using Mac OS 10.2.8. Recently, my start up disk's memory has gone done from 1.2 GB available free space to 668MB (currently). I haven't saved anything on this disk so I can not understand why this memory has dissappeared. I have also had icons on the start up menu disappear. Could someone please tell me how I can restore the missing memory?

From what I can figure out I'm in need of both more space on my computer and more ram.I've deleted enough that I now have 300MB free (from 1TB). I'm a photographer, so those RAW files of mine take up a LOT of space. It wouldn't hurt for me to put a few folders onto an external harddrive. I think I can hook up my current external harddrive and a new one up with a hub and have both of those backup with my online backup service. leaving my computer with a lot of free space. (I'm using Crashplan). I'm scared to have all those photos in just one location... this way they'd be in two. Would this work?According to the Activity Monitor I have 1.28 GB of free space (666.1 MB page outs). So programs like Lightroom, etc. are starting to run a little slow. Financially I'll only be able to do these two things one at a time. Is there one that's more urgent than the other

Does anyone know a quick way how to copy pre-recorded/purchased DVD's to my iMac's hard drive, so I can watch via my Apple TV? In the past I've inserted the DVD and it's appeared on the desktop, I then choose to copy it, and managed to paste it into iTunes, but it takes at least an hour to copy to the hard drive. Any ideas? I've tried Mac the ripper, but wasn't sure how to get that to work,

I have a imac (intel) running snow lepord - i was using the maching when it froze up with the dreaded spinning wheel. I left the computer sit for 45 min with no change then powered down using the power button. I let sit for a few min. then restarted using the power button. A screen showed up with a folder with question mark flashing. I looked in support and saw that I should try a few different things and then got to the section...if this doesn't work put the DVD startup in the computer and hold C while starting. I did this, went into disk utility (as the directions stated) and once there my harddrive is nowhere to be found.I am guessing my HD is out but not really sure. This Imac is less than 1.5 years old and has already had one HD go out.
