How does a hard drive get damage?

I spilled coffee all over my MacBook Pro and since it is not covered by AppleCare it will cost $1,200 to fix. I can still turn it on but most of the keyboard isn't working properly. I got it back in July 2007 (15" 2.4ghz 160gb) and I think I'm going to buy a new one. I managed to get all of my school work off of it even thought it took awhile and was very frustrating. My question is, is there anyway to completely wipe the hard drive then sell it? I was trying to look on eBay
View 16 Replies View RelatedI have just installed a new hard drive in my imac intel 20" (2006) and upgraded the memory and now the hard drive does not show up in the 'select destinations' folder of the install program. I can see the hard drive in the disk utilities window however it wont let me do anything. It is a seagate 1TB SATA II drive however it is displaying it as a 7.3 TB.I have tried to erase and partition and get the same error message each time, 'Input/Output error'.
I have tried starting the thing with the install disk which is Mac OS X (Tiger?) which came with the computer

Has anyone discovered the perfect way to protect their Lion thumb drive when carrying it in a bag? The contacts look so exposed and easy to damage.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI transferred some Garageband files from my old iMac to my new one. I opened up a song to listen (it had been about 4 months) to it and I forgot that the monitor was on. I am assuming that feedback protection was on, as there was nasty and extremely loud feedback for about 2.5 seconds before the "feedback detected" message popped up. The volume on the Mac was at between 60 and 75 percent up.Â
I am slightly concerned about damage to the speakers. Everything sounds ok, but I noticed a slight tinny, feedback sound (on the highs) on certain songs. It could have easily just been part of the songs I listened to, as some were self-recordings of not great quality. Others (acoustic) did not seem to have that problem.Â
I understand feedback can be dangerous, but the fact that Garageband caught it fairly quickly, there was no pop or buzz, and I still have working speakers makes me feel a bit better. In short: am I just being paranoid, or does this warrant a trip to the Apple Store to have them take a look?

iMac 20 inch early 2008. OS X 10.9.4, 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo, 4BG 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.Several of my DVDs have stopped playing on my iMac. Running a scan with ClamXav identified and quarantined trojans one of which was (FLV_Media_Player.exe).The DVDs in question will still show the identifying titles but will not play the programs, instead stating that the content is now in unrecognised format.MY internal and external DVD players will still run other of my DVDs.Is the trojan likely to be the cause? Can the damaged DVDs infect other playing systems? Can the damaged DVDs be recovered?

My 2.33gh intel core 2 is acting erratic. The finder quits, stalls and freezes...it turns off and then reappears. Programs fail. adobe will not run. It was on during the huge electrical storm last weekend. It started acting like this after. It was on a surge protector, but those are not 100%.
I can get a ways into backing up files. I am attempting to install Lion, but I did not journal the partition. And It looks like I have to clean install and erase the HD. If power surge did damage, software will not work. Does the finder issue look like electrical damage?

How do I transfer all data from my old internal hard drive to a new internal hard drive? I have an iMac with a 320gb internal HD that is full and I am replacing it with a 2tb internal drive. I have several external drives; 1 tb, 2tb and 3 tb. The 2 tb is being used for Time Machine. Do I have to buy an enclosure? If so, where would I get an inexpensive one? I also want to partition the new internal drive for Windows, and I'm not sure how much space to use for that. I plan to use Windows to check my work in PowerPoint created on my Mac for clients on PCs.

My internal 1TB hard drive on my iMac is dead and I don't have the money to replace it at the moment. I have everything backed up on an external 1TB drive using Time Machine. As a workaround for the time being,Is there any way I can install the system on the external drive and use that as the boot drive without erasing the Time Machine Backups? It seems to me I would have to have two partitions for the external drive, one for the system, and one for Time Machine. But is there any way to add a partition without erasing the existing one with Time Machine only on it? Â

From what I can figure out I'm in need of both more space on my computer and more ram.I've deleted enough that I now have 300MB free (from 1TB). I'm a photographer, so those RAW files of mine take up a LOT of space. It wouldn't hurt for me to put a few folders onto an external harddrive. I think I can hook up my current external harddrive and a new one up with a hub and have both of those backup with my online backup service. leaving my computer with a lot of free space. (I'm using Crashplan). I'm scared to have all those photos in just one location... this way they'd be in two. Would this work?According to the Activity Monitor I have 1.28 GB of free space (666.1 MB page outs). So programs like Lightroom, etc. are starting to run a little slow. Financially I'll only be able to do these two things one at a time. Is there one that's more urgent than the other

View 6 Replies View RelatedDoes anyone know a quick way how to copy pre-recorded/purchased DVD's to my iMac's hard drive, so I can watch via my Apple TV? In the past I've inserted the DVD and it's appeared on the desktop, I then choose to copy it, and managed to paste it into iTunes, but it takes at least an hour to copy to the hard drive. Any ideas? I've tried Mac the ripper, but wasn't sure how to get that to work,

Startup screen is white with spinning circle. I've done all the work-around's. Won't download a new version of Lion. Disk utility says everything is fine. EVERYTHING IS NOT FINE. Can't start up from a disk. This is my 14th Mac. Kind of disapointed.

I have a imac (intel) running snow lepord - i was using the maching when it froze up with the dreaded spinning wheel. I left the computer sit for 45 min with no change then powered down using the power button. I let sit for a few min. then restarted using the power button. A screen showed up with a folder with question mark flashing. I looked in support and saw that I should try a few different things and then got to the section...if this doesn't work put the DVD startup in the computer and hold C while starting. I did this, went into disk utility (as the directions stated) and once there my harddrive is nowhere to be found.I am guessing my HD is out but not really sure. This Imac is less than 1.5 years old and has already had one HD go out.

I have a Mid 2011 iMac and have been thinking about replacing the hard drive with an SSD drive. What sort of considerations should I be aware of? In particular: Is there a specific SSD technology I should be looking for (brand, connecter, etc.)?Can I use an SSD drive for the OS and the existing HD for additional storage? If so, whats the best way to separate the data (where do apps go, etc.)?Is it something that I can do myself or does it require taking it to a repair shop? How does it effect the warranty?Â
