The disk utility shows only 262 MB of free space available. I have 44 GB of space occupied by the "other" category. What is in this category and how can I free up some space? I can't even download necessary updates because I have no space left!

I've suddenly been getting a pop up message that reads "Your startup disk is almost full - you need to make more space available on your start up disk by deleting files"
My hard disk is 320 GB & I've only used 111 GB so far so why is this message popping up & what can I do about it without deleting my precious files?
I was using my Macbook awhile ago and I got a popup message saying my startup disk is full, even though I have 84.05 gigs available. I figured it was a fluke and ignored it. A bit later, I was doing some stuff in Finder and noticed at the bottom where it says my drive's free space, it suddenly went from 84.05 GB free, to zero free, gave me the error message, and went back up to 84.05 gigs free, and it's done this a couple times...and the only thing I was doing was copying a 3 KB text file from a thumb drive. Anyone know WTF is up with that? It definitely is strange and I've never seen it before. I just ran a Verify in Disk Utility and everything checks out, no errors

It's my daughter's macbook, but I use it for video editing. Is the startup disk the hard drive on these things? My startup disk is full, and can't even get in to anything to delete stuff, how can I get in and move things to my external hard drive (which is what I was doing when it somehow became full)? All that happens is I reset the computer, when I turn it on it says the start up disk is full, I put in my password and the screen just stays grey. I also noticed before I started moving things that the "other" storage of my 60GB macbook air was over 30GB, but not sure how that could be/what it is. View 3 Replies View RelatedYesterday I deleted enough files to give myself at least 2 gigs of free memory and yet today when I opened up my macbook it tells me I have only 190MB left, and yet none of the files that I deleted remain on the computer, and my trash is completely empty.Does anyone know of any sort of 'Detox' kind of program or method to get the Macbook to reanalyse how much memory it really has left? I checked my storage in the about this mac window. 49.72GB of my HD space is taken up by Other. Also in Disk Utility under the partition almost the entire rectangle is light blue.
