I tried to install Lion on iMac 2004 (2008)Now the HD has a problem. I won't unmount via Disk Utility. The partition with the system shows a circle with a slash through it.The Mac will boot into other systems on both the internal and external drives. But the system on the internal is broken. I used the system restor to start up Lion. There are hundreds of gigabytes missing. The HD is formatted in 2 partitions. One for Lion, one for Tiger.I want to get rid of the Tiger partition. Disk Utility tries but can not unmount the Tiger partition.I think I have to reformat the HD back into 1 partition and instal Lion on that. The Lion partitioin only has 15% free space. I can't just go ahead and use it.Â

View 3 Replies View RelatedI would like to format a partition on an old iMac (mid-2007) that is compatible with Xubuntu 11.10. According to Disk Utility the current partition is formatted with Mac OS Extended (journaled). None of the other format options appear to be likely candidates.Certainly the existing format does not appear to work. What must I do?Â

Does anyone know if Apple plans to create a bluetooth version of the larger keyboard?   I have the small, bluetooth version - but it's too cramped. I'd much prefer the larger one.Â

How do I set a custom time & date format in the top bar?Â
When I go to System Preferences > Language & Text > Formats I can set different formats. I have no idea where you will see these, but I know that it's not the top bar where the time and date is being displayed. Because no matter what I enter, the format in the top bar will stay the same. I can only choose things like 24-Hour clock or not, blinking dots and so on in the Time & Date settings from the System Preferences.Â

I have my film material (camera: Panasonic SDR-H20) in MPEG-2 Format, which can't be imported by iMovie.Â
I would like to know,
1) which are from your experiences the best programms to convert MPEG-2 to "?".
2) ? because, which would be the best Format....I would like to watch the movie on my Mac, but also see it on my TV. Most programs offer to Transfer it to everything (ipad, ipod, tablet....but not a General TV).
I'm running Snow Leopard on my new Macbook Pro. I've got a 1.5TB External hard drive that I'm trying to figure out how to format in HFS+ with Apple Partition Map. I can figure out how to format in HFS using Disk Utility, however it still does it in GUID format and I do not know how to do it in Apple Partition Map.
Googleing this for hours has lead with all kinds of information on how to go to GUID FROM Apple Partition Map but not the other way around. I know GUID is the new hottness.. but this drive will be used exclusively to connect to my XBOX 360 and it supposedly only reads HFS+ when its formatted with Apple Partition Map. (I have tried it with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with GUID, and the XBOX does NOT recognize it) I do not want to use Fat 32, (I know that that is the other major option) beacuse it limits file size.
Is there a place on my imac to format memory cards or external hard drives?

I've got a Transcend 8GB usb drive and i want to erase everything on it but i can't. I know that the best way to do this is the Disk Utility (Because Finder can't erase them too. When I drag and drop to the bin, it says "43 files cannot be deleted")Â
When i attempt to format, this message appears from disk utility:Â and also, another message appears at the same time.I just wanted to format my disk. But i can still see the content in the disk. But can't copy them to desktop.Â

I'm using Macbook Pro(2010, 10.6.6) and a PC with Windows 7. I need to transfer image files from both laptops to an external drive. I formatted the external drive in exFAT and wanted to know if there are any problems that might occur in the future. I already know there is an issue with such programs as Carbon Copy Cloner. I primarily need the drive for backup of the images and not system backups. Do you have any file corruption or other problems formatting in exFAT?

Some time ago I had a problem with my iMac. Turned out my internal HD was broken so I got a new one.
The problem is that after I got my iMac with the new INTERNAL HD back, I was unable to write data on my EXTERNAL (Toshiba) HD, which until then I had no problems with. When I checked the format of it, it now says NTFS.Â
As I have more than 1 TB of data on it which would take forever to back up, is there another way to change it's status and write on it again? I was once able to do it, so I don't know where the problem is.....Â

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got a WD MyBook FW800/USB/eSATA 1TB drive. It was all one partition HFS+/GPT formatted.
Since it copies fast I figured I'd like to use it with PCs too as well though, to copy stuff about faster, so thought I might format it MBR instead of GPT, with 2 partitions: a FAT32 and an HFS+ partition. If it's MBR with a large HFS+, and smaller FAT32 partition, do I lose anything by it not being GPT/GUID?
Can I use a MBR formatted drive for Time Machine? Any other reasons GPT is preferable (except that it has a backup of the partition table at the end of the drive)? I could do with a bigger TM drive so have considered using it for this, but it seems silly to use the one with a Hi-Speed FW800 connection for that!

I would like to format my HD, but Mac tell me that it is impossible. I think is because I am using it,but I am on the recovery partition, so I don't know. Right now, my HD don't have any partition, so I can't install MAC.That's why I am looking for a software that I can put on a USB. This is a brand new MacBook Pro, so, I did not get any CD. Is there any tool that I can make bootable on a USB and use it to format the Mac?Â

I have a Hitahchi travelstar 5K1000 in a cradle on USB on MBP 2008 with mavericks. It will format Mac OS journaled but will not allow install of Mavericks, reporting an unfixable error. Verify Disk & Repair Disk show errors that cannot be fixed, and suggest erase. Which is where I started. The disk accepts FAT format without problem. Â
The same result occurs with the disk installed IN 2011 MBP, or as USB ext HDD on the same. Diskutil on terminal, and Disk Utility, run from host MBP- from ext HDD with Mavericks intalled and from internet recovery. Also tried in target disk mode. Always the same. These machines successfully format the old HDD. Â
Problem is - this is the second disk tried - the first was seagate momentus 1TB. I was convinced the problem was the disk and returned it. Bought the Hitachi from a different supplier and have the same problem. Â
So I have tried 2 different disks, connected in 2 ways to two diferent MBPs, and several different methods. The only things in common are the OS and the disk size. Am I missing something here?Â
The original HDD (seagate momentus 500GB) has an intermittent harware failure. I can reformat and install mavericks, but it will soon die. The new disk was simply meant as a replacement for this.

My computer was acting slow so I ran Tech Tool. It came up with various Volume errors but they were all fixed. I noticed that this computer was formatted as Mac OS Extended but NOT Journaled like the other two in our office. I was unable to add Journaling with either Disk Utility or Tech Tool. Both cases said that "Journaling failed" or "unable to add journaling". I believe I used to have journaling because I often use Onyx for repairing disk permissions and various other processes and this was the first time that I encountered the error "Not possible to verify the start-up volume because it is not journaled". I ran the Apple Hardware Check and the Hard drive is fine. So, after trying the previous mentioned utilities again to try and "journal", I decided to perform an Archive & Install. I am in the process of updating the OSX software, but I noticed the HD still says Format: Mac OS Extended...Hmmmm. Can anyone shed any light on this problem?
